As frontman for the British progressive-rock band Genesis [see entry], Peter Gabriel cowrote, sang, and acted out elaborate story songs, wearing masks and costumes. Since leaving Genesis in 1975 to begin a solo career, Gabriel has revealed a new array of guises, including pop star with a distinctively mellifluous voice, soundtrack composer, social activist, and world-music aficionado as well as benefactor, music-video innovator, and multimedia artist.

Gabriel's first solo album was an eponymously titled effort, as were his next three. (The idea, he once explained, was to suggest issues, as one would for a magazine.) The first and second LPs drew attention for the respective singles "Solsbury Hill" and "D.I.Y." The third, produced by Steve Lillywhite, yielded "Games Without Frontiers" (Number 48, 1980) and showed Gabriel striving to break rock conventions: For instance, drummers Jerry Marotta and Phil Collins (Gabriel's former Genesis bandmate) were prohibited from using cymbals.

Gabriel's fourth album, subtitled Security (1982), was the singer's first to go gold; it also gave him his first Top 40 single with "Shock the Monkey." That same year, Gabriel financed the World of Music, Arts, and Dance (WOMAD) Festival, designed to bring African and Far Eastern music - which had increasingly influenced his work — to Western ears. To offset the festival's debt, he staged a Genesis reunion concert and released a WOMAD album, featuring cuts by himself, Robert Fripp (the producer of his second LP), and Pete Townshend alongside ethnic-music sources. The WOMAD Festival became an annual event, and the organization eventually spawned an education program and record label.

In 1984 Gabriel was tapped to score Alan Parker's film Birdy; the singer consequently won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes. In 1985 he founded Real World Inc., aimed at developing cross-cultural projects in technology and the arts. The following year, he started the United Nations University for Peace, intended to fund an international human-rights computer network, and set up Real World Studios, a recording complex near Bath, England, where artists including Van Morrison and New Order have since worked. (A Real World record label, dedicated to exposing ethnic music from around the world, was established in 1989.)

_The year 1986 also saw Gabriel's commercial breakthrough. So, coproduced with Daniel Lanois, reached Number Two and produced the funky, chart-topping "Sledgehammer," which Gabriel accompanied with a groundbreaking video full of provocative live-action-animation images. A video for "Big Time" (Number Eight, 1987) followed suit. Other singles included "In Your Eyes" (Number 26, 1986) and "Don't Give Up" (Number 72, 1987), a duet with Kate Bush.

Gabriel joined U2, Sting, and others for a 1986 tour on behalf of Amnesty International. A 1988 Amnesty tour followed, with Gabriel, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Tracy Chapman, and Youssou N'Dour (who had sung on So). Also in 1988, Gabriel performed "Biko," his tribute to South African civil-rights martyr Steven Biko (from 1980's Peter Gabriel) at a Nelson Mandela tribute at London's Wembley Stadium, and composed music for Martin Scorsese's controversial adaptation of The Last Temptation of Christ. The 1989 soundtrack album won a Grammy for Best New Age Performance.

Gabriel's next studio album, 1992's Us, was inspired by his mid-80s divorce from childhood sweetheart Jill Moore and the breakup of a subsequent relationship with actress Rosanna Arquette. The album reached Number Two and generated "Digging in the Dirt" (Number 52, 1992) and "Steam" (Number 32, 1992). In 1993 Gabriel enlisted an international roster including Sinéad O'Connor, Crowded House, James, and P.M. Dawn for a WOMAD tour. The 1994 double CD Secret World Live was recorded during two Italian concerts in 1993. Also in 1994 the musician added another branch to his corporation, called Real World Multi Media, to use technology as another creative outlet. The division published its first CD-ROM, Xplora 1, an interactive look into Gabriel's various projects, that year. A follow-up, Eve, featuring Gabriel's music and the work of several visual artists, was released in 1997. The musician helped develop an attraction for the London Millennium Dome, which opened on New Year's Day 2000; he also issued a soundtrack, OVO, for the attraction, which included a drawn storybook.

After 2001, Gabriel continued to work on soundtracks. In 2002, he wrote the soundtrack to the Australian film Rabbit-Proof Fence as well as releasing the critically unsuccessful Up, his first solo album in 10 years. A remastered edition of Us was also issued in 2002. Hit, a compilation of Gabriel's greatest, was released in 2003. Gabriel continued to record songs for a plethora of films, most recently "Down to Earth" for Disney's Wall-E.

Born Matthew Miller in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Matisyahu spent his youth as an itinerant hippie, following Phish and searching for meaning in his life. On a trip to Israel, Matisyahu rediscovered Judaism. After penning a play entitled "Echada," about a boy who meets a Hassidic rabbi in Washington Square Park in New York, Matisyahu's life oddly imitated his art, and he met a Lubavitch rabbi in the park, spurring his name change from Matthew to Matisyahu, one of the heroes of the Chanukah story. After a few false starts, Matisyahu became deeply immersed in the Hasidic tradition of mystical singing. It took just a few leaps to arrive at his current incarnation, as what may be the world's first Hasidic reggae singer.

Former leader of the French Punk-Pop band Mano Negra, Manu Chao explores a wider range of musical terrain as a solo artist. Singing in Spanish, French, and English, Chao adopts the voice of the disenfranchised in his work. He's equally comfortable lamenting the "desaparecidos" (disappeared) in Spanish, confessing existential angst in French, or boasting he's the " king of bongo" in English. His main rhythmic template is reggae, and instrumentation is sparse -- guitars, bass, and keyboards with a touch of brass. Many tunes include sound montage: European news broadcasts about the Zapatistas and television and radio white noise phase in and out of the songs. Chao's home-produced work has an air of sincerity rare in the world of pop music, and his rough-hewn vocals display raw talent while he plays his guitar with a deceptive simplicity belying his talent as a songwriter. Well known and loved in Europe, Chao seems poised to conquer the Americas.

Ry Cooder has had a long and varied career as virtuoso session musician, recording artist, record producer, film scorer, musicologist and champion of indigenous music throughout the world. He started out as a guitarist of uncommon skill in Los Angeles folk music circles. He was briefly in a band with Taj Mahal called Rising Sons, and was also a part of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band. His slide guitar playing and his ability with just about any stringed instrument soon set him apart. As well as playing numerous sessions in the '60s, he worked with the Rolling Stones and is probably responsible for pointing Keith Richards in the direction of the open-tuned guitar sound that has become his trademark. Cooder's solo albums feature dramatic reworkings of some old and sometimes obscure material. He has worked extensively writing and playing movie soundtracks, such as the eerie, atmospheric Paris, Texas and The Long Riders. Cooder has most recently been active with world music, recording a very popular album with African guitarist Ali Farka Toure. His latest and most prominent role is that of producer for an ad hoc group of Cuban musicians on a recording called The Buena Vista Social Club, which has revived the careers of a number of musicians, as well as being massively popular critically and commercially.

In the wake of the Gotan Project's global success in 2003, fusing tango with electronica became, to put it mildly, fashionable. But Argentina's Federico Aubele came by his tang-tronica credentials honestly; the guitarist and producer is a native of Buenos Aires, and he fell in love with Astor Piazzolla's innovative tango early on. (Aubele calls Piazzolla the quintessential Buenos Aires musician, as tightly bound to the city as Frank Sinatra is to New York.) When he tried his hand at sampling and mixing, the stars aligned: He sent a few demos to Eighteenth Street Lounge Music and immediately impressed them. His debut Gran Hotel Buenos Aires dropped to critical acclaim in 2004, and the single "Postales" became an underground favorite; hipsters around the world chilled out to his aural postcard from the land of gauchos and tangueros. Despite his electronica flirtation, Aubele's never abandoned his acoustic roots. He doesn't use MIDI technology and plays guitar and other live instruments on almost every track he produces. In 2007 he released the eagerly awaited follow-up, Panamericana, which saw him working with singer Natalia Clavier.

Ex-thrash metal bandmates turned itinerant musicians, Mexican musicians Rodrigo and Gabriela met in Mexico in the band Terra Acida. Not much later, they gave up their electric guitars, wandered through Europe and settled in Dublin. Inspired by flamenco's technical virtuosity, the duo began playing a fiery (if less mournful) version of flamenco that brings bands like Led Zeppelin and Metallica into the musical fold. The group polished their chops busking in Dublin's Grafton Street and, after gaining a devoted following there, they started seducing audiences outside Ireland. Their first album Foc was named for the Catalan word for fire (perhaps with some double entendres attached). In 2006, they teamed with producer John Leckie (Stone Roses, Radiohead) to record their self-titled international debut.

Cheb i Sabbah is a legendary Algerian born, San Francisco DJ who spins what he calls an "Outernational Mix," of dance music from "the oasis of Arabia, Africa, Asia." He creates a seamless mix that unifies diverse sounds. His technique is hardly appropriation, for in the context of his decks, the voice of each artist truly shines. He creates a greater, extended community in the mix. His recorded music is less beat-oriented and more quietly meditative. A hybrid of Hindustani classical music and contemporary mixology, Sabbah taps into something seemingly timeless and without borders.

Close your eyes and float amongst the dreamy music that is Bliss. Since 2001, this multicultural chill-out group has released material on famed Danish label Music for Dreams and has appeared on more than 200 compilations, including the soundtrack from the hit feature film Sex & The City. The members of the group hail from Denmark, Sweden and West Africa, and their music reflects this diversity. Indeed, they have quickly become one of the go-to groups for shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and are often tapped to provide music for television ads by Mercedes and DKNY. Their music was also featured in the feature-length films Passion of the Christ and Steven Spielberg's Munich. Bliss' chilled compositions have been compared to those of artists including Sade, Norah Jones and Ennio Morricone. But where those artists stick to the tried-and-true pop formula, Bliss' music aims toward the New Age compositional form. Their U.S. debut album, Quiet Letters, featured gentle ethnic percussion and mysterious orchestration with guest vocalist Sophie Barker from famed downtempo heroes Zero 7. Bliss take the quiet road and invite us on a journey through a lush netherworld of calming soundscapes.

British guitarist, producer, actor, film composer and spirit chaser Nitin Sawhney composes a multi-genre world fusion. Using music theories from around the globe, Sawhney has written for Sinead O'Connor, remixed for Paul McCartney and Sting, and produced for the Algerian Rai maestro Cheb Mami and Indian songstress Amar. It's not uncommon to hear Sawhney dropping elements of classical Flamenco, angelic vocals and Middle-Eastern scales over Drum n' Bass and House rhythms. A gifted and original musician, his fusion concepts are mostly instrumental, spiritual and ahead of their time.

Formed by Simon Emmerson in 1992, the Afro-Celts got their start before the idea of fusing world music with dance beats had even entered most musicians'
consciousness -- and long before entire labels began to devote themselves to the sound. Core members James McNally, Iarla O Lionaird, Martin Russell, Johnny
Kalsi and N'Faly Koyate have brought in a number of big-name collaborators over the years, playing with notables like Robert Plant, Sinead O'Connor, Peter
Gabriel as well as a score of other, lesser-known but deeply talented musicians. They created the template for an entire sound, fusing cinematic textures with dance beats and improbably finding common ground between the musical traditions of West Africa and Ireland.

Essential listening for the acid, ambient, psytrance and Burning Man communities, it's not surprising that England's Simon Posford used to record under the name Hallucinogen. Teaming up with ex-Quintessence flautist Raja Ram, tPosford formed Shpongle, a group credited with fashioning a sound that creates "psycho-geometric, atomic telepathic, shimmering, incandescent dream dilations" in the listener. This sort of thing would seem to make them an easy target for those who would bracket the entire genre as the tragic blathering of many a fried mind, but that would ignore the massive production talent and surprising accessibility they both brought to the sound. Their three-album career (Are You Shpongled?(1998), Tales Of The Inexpressible(2001),Nothing Lasts…But Nothing Is Lost(2005))plus a remixer effort is as good an introduction to the psytrance genre as one can get. Avoiding the endless repetitive noodling of some of the more Goa-esque artists in the field, Simon and Raja create real songs and use panoramic production values to enhance the massive breakdowns and frantic beats. The end result is clearly psytrance, but it's quality psytrance, ranking up there with Atmos and Infected Mushroom, and well worth investigating, even if you've never dreamt of going north of 135 BPM in your life.

Forced to leave her native Benin (birthplace of voodoo!) for her survival -- and since relocated to Paris -- Angelique Kidjo is a gifted vocalist who combines African folk with everything from American hip-hop and European electronica to world pop. Her vocal style adds elements of soul and jazz, but that's no surprise coming from a woman who grew up loving the music of Jimi Hendrix, as well as Celtic music and Vocal Jazz. Her dance-friendly tracks feature enough 70s-style Funk, Acid Jazz grooves and phat beats to keep the club kids happy, but her A Capella vocals will please the older adults who fondly remember hearing fellow African-born vocalist Miriam Makeba for the first time.

Idan Raichel was under no mandate to become a musician. Born in Israel to an Ashkenazi family that wasn't particularly musical, Raichel nevertheless took up instrument after instrument: he studied the accordion as a kid, played jazz in high school and used his mandatory two-year army service to join the Army rock band. When he left the Army, Raichel took a job in Tel Aviv counseling immigrant children, many of whom were Ethiopian Jews. Intrigued by Ethiopian culture, Raichel started seeking out bars that played Ethiopian music, and he quickly found himself introduced to music by greats like Mahmoud Ahmed and Aster Aweke. At the same time, he'd begun working as a session musician for some of Israel's bigger acts. When he finally decided it was time to make his own music, Raichel reached out to a number of musicians and ended up collaborating with over 70 artists. The result was The Idan Raichel Project, an album that combined Raichel's electronic know-how with Israel's stunning and under-recognized cultural diversity. Unorthodox and decidedly un-pop, the album made Raichel a sensation.

East Indian singer Sheila Chandra has an undeniably alluring voice that possesses the discipline of a singer trained in Indian classical vocal techniques. Since her emergence in the 1980s with U.K.-based band Monsoon (with whom she recorded the crossover raga hit "Ever So Lonely"), Chandra has successfully moved on to a solo career that's seen her collaborate with husband/producer Steve Coe to explore the frontiers of Indian Classical and Indian Pop fusion. Her evolution as an artist has coincided with the reduction of accompaniment on her recordings, to the point of her recording A Cappella pieces from time to time. Utilizing a technique called bols -- in which she imitates the percussive sound and patterns of the tabla drum -- Chandra creates hypnotic music with sophisticated, melodic embellishments and interwoven vocal overdubs. In the '90s, her association with Peter Gabriel and his Real World label brought her to the attention of a larger audience that has embraced her work with reverence.

Like anything on the Luaka Bop label, Si*Sé evade stereotypes. Although New York drum 'n' bass scenester Carol C teamed up with programmer/DJ U.F. Low to create the group, don't expect drum 'n' bass. And although both band members claim Latin roots, don't expect all the songs to be salsa-fied Spanish-language burners. Instead, Si*Sé blend all their influences into a cool downtempo stew that's deftly produced and enriched by Carol C's slippery, seductive voice.
N'Dour came to worldwide attention in the 1980s after being "discovered" by Peter Gabriel (he was already loved in France and a major star in his native Senegal) and impressing listeners with his high, soulful wails and incredible vocal technique. On his own recordings, he had invented a style of music known as mbalax -- a blend of African music with Caribbean and pop influences. N'Dour's music can surprise, with Cuban influenced horns working side by side with rhythmic guitars, a variety of sung trills, rhymes and scat interspersed between the sweetest melodies you've ever heard. Working with artists like Sting, Neneh Cherry, Branford Marsalis, Wyclef Jean and Gabriel helps N'Dour get his music to a wider audience, but it is his own recordings in which you can truly appreciate this astounding singer.

There really isn't a name for what Dengue Fever is doing yet. Maybe "psychedelic ethno-rock," or "retro global pop" -- some special cocktail of words is needed to describe a sound that plucks from the flotsam and jetsam of global culture and crafts the freshest sound from the oddest materials: vintage organ, funk beats, surf and psychedelic rock. Then add in the ethereal howl of Bollywood singers, and a Cambodian lead singer singing in Khmer. Based in LA., members of Dengue Fever (who've played with everyone from Dieselhead to Beck) stumbled on some Cambodian rock from the 1960s and '70s and were so inspired they decided to start a tribute band, but they faced one stumbling block: they needed a singer. Singer Chhom Nimol had achieved pop stardom in Cambodia and was working the lucrative wedding circuit in Los Angeles when she auditioned. The fit was immediate and obvious, and they set down to recording the first CD. Their first release consisted mainly of faithful covers of what, to Nimol, was essentially classic (Cambodian) rock. Nimol proved to be the group's secret weapon: her voice defies gravity, floating up into the heady climes of Asian pop (where most western singers fear to tread) and redefining pop as we know it. Their second release, 2005's Escape From Dragon House, saw the group taking more license with their sound, straying into original territory while still staying true to their inspiration. The group somehow catches the spirit of the early rock revolution, the time when youth culture blossomed into its first innocently libidinous expression and people around the world took up instruments in an attempt to duplicate a sound that had migrated from Africa and matured on a Southern Californian beach.

Beloved in his native Pakistan, revered in India, and seen throughout the Western world as a musical ambassador from the Indian subcontinent, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan delighted -- and enlightened -- audiences around the world for over thirty years. A master of Qawwali, the rich Sufi devotional music tradition into which he was born, Ali Khan had no qualms about cross-cultural boundary hopping -- much to the chagrin of some of his more traditional listeners. Khan collaborated on film soundtracks with the likes of Peter Gabriel (The Last Temptation of Christ) and Eddie Vedder (Dead Man Walking), and saw his music remixed by Trip-Hop sensation Massive Attack. Nonetheless, Khan was best known and loved for his passionate, strident tenor, which wavered and soared like a liberated bird leading an ascending flock into the sky at dusk. At times bittersweet, at times caressing, Khan's voice could induce ecstasy in even non-Muslim listeners, and frequently did. Khan died at age forty-nine, leaving behind a rich discography...and a gaping hole which has yet to be filled.

Clegg led an interracial group in South Africa during the closing (and most volatile) years of apartheid. He had global success with his upbeat, club-happy Afro and western pop -- the Police seem to have had almost as much influence on his sound as the music of his adopted African home. Although his lyrics have always touched on international themes, Clegg's career -- at least in the west -- has been hurt by the dismantling of the very system that helped make his music so unique.

Effervescent, energetic and explosively hip, Bomba Estereo is a party waiting to happen -- and one usually does at this Colombian outfit's vibrant shows, which combine live instruments and vocals with sampling, and typically involve live projections from Colombian video artists. Simon Mejia (programmer/bassist/lead looper) and Liliana Saumet (vocalist) formed the group in their hometown of Bogota in 2005 and went on to add percussionist Diego Cadavid, drummer Kiki Egurrola and guitarist Julian Salazar to the mix. That mix, by the way, blends dub, hip-hop and electronic dance music with Afro-Caribbean rhythms and Colombian folk and pop styles like cumbia, champeta and bullerengue. The group's exciting eclecticism and infectious party vibe earned it gigs opening for the likes of Calle 13 and Pacha Massive and a critically acclaimed spot at SXSW. Nacional Records released their Columbian debut Vol. 1 in 2006, followed by their international second album, which was released in Latin America as Estalla in 2008 and in North America as Blow Up in 2009.

Originally from Hawaii, Poi Dog Pondering have survived as many location changes as personnel shifts since they left their Hawaiian home in the early '90s. A trio at its constant core, they were originally a life-embracing, World music-tinged Folk-Rock band. They have since adopted -- and mostly discarded -- electronica for a richer, lushly orchestral acoustic pop sound. Led by the dynamic Frank Orrall, Poi Dog are definitely worth your time and attention.

The incredible success BoA has had over the course of her career makes sense considering this South Korean pop star has spent over half her young life in the industry. Born Boa Kwon near Seoul in 1986, she was discovered at age eleven when she entered a talent search organized by mega-talent agency SM Entertainment. The agency quickly scooped up the young singer and shuttled her into two years of dance, singing, and Japanese language training before unleashing her almost simultaneously on the Korean and Japanese pop markets. Their efforts were wildly successful, leading to several hit albums in both countries, as well as some Mandarin language singles. In 2008, BoA and SM set their sights on the U.S., and in 2009, she released her self-titled debut English album, featuring work by respected hip-hop and pop producers and songwriters like Sean Garrett and Brian Kennedy.

The Shanghai Restoration Project is a somewhat weighty fusion concept that actually works. And we're not just talking about the sound, although that is very compelling: an artful and, more significantly, listenable and danceable mashup of hip-hop, electronic dance beats, and Chinese traditional and folk instrumentals and melodies that's inspired by (and sometimes samples) the East-meets-West Shanghai jazz bands of the 1930s. Whew! But it works, and it gets the group work. The brain child of Chinese American producer Dave Liang, Shanghai Restoration Project has released three studio albums, two collections of their instrumental cuts, and a remix album since its inception in 2006. The group has also lent its remixing skills to several interesting projects, including a partnership with China Record Corporation (the Chinese government's label) formed to rework recordings of classic Chinese pop and jazz from 1930s Shanghai. Even if you don't regularly peruse China Records' catalogue, however, you have likely heard the Project's ambient, evocative work in commercials for Microsoft, Louis Vuitton and TiVo, among others.

The talented Portuguese singer-songwriter Sara Tavares has been making waves since her third release and North American debut, Balance, hit shelves in 2006. Born to Cape Verdean parents, Tavares' childhood was no picnic: both parents emigrated from Portugal to find work, leaving Tavares to be raised in Lisbon by a friend of the family. She turned to music to console herself, composing song-poems that she began setting to music. In 1993, when she was just 16 years old, she entered Portugal's prestigious Chuva de Estrelas songwriting contest -- and won. The experience set her on her path. She began singing backup for other artists and recorded two solo albums, the second of which, Mi Ma Bo, was produced by Congolese singer-songwriter Lokua Kanza. The album signaled the evolution of Tavares' musical direction as she began paying more attention to her African roots. Inspired by artists like Jorge Ben and Stevie Wonder, Tavares was determined to make music that wasn't exclusively African or Portuguese, but was both. Balance did just that, trafficking in the hybrid slang of Lisbon's streets and delicately referencing music from around the world.

Natacha Atlas captures an ethereal, otherworldly sound that renders even symphonic backup impotent in comparison with her insistent, vibrato-laden vocals. Meshing North African tonalities with transcendent orchestration, Atlas is helping to define a new world music that relies equally on Techno tricks and indigenous folk forms. A lead singer for the TransGlobal Underground for years, Atlas struck out on her own in 1995 with the album Diaspora, and has cut several CDs since. As her career grows, Atlas' lovely voice will no doubt mature, as will her wide-ranging stylistic interests. One to watch.

Fusing jazz, Worldbeat, and traditional Indian chants, Uttal crafts a passionate and entrancing musical brew. His robust baritone voice dips and soars with devotion; his dotar offers microtonal embellishments that lilt and sigh with a mixture of sadness and exultation. But this is not merely a wholesale Westernization of Eastern musical styles -- this is a full-fledged World Fusion project. The ensemble includes Hammond organ, country-fried electric guitar, and a rhythm section that percolates somewhere between down-tempo breakbeat and Reggae. And when a trombone and sax join the guitar and organ in soulful, articulate melodies, the music defies genre classification.

Sometimes the best projects evolve out of romances, and in Sidestepper's case it was love at first sight. Englishman Richard Blair was working as a recording engineer at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios when he heard the singer Toto La Momposina for the first time. Floored by her Afro-Colombian sound, he hotfooted it to Colombia as soon as the recording was done, and thus began his love affair with Colombian music. After finding work as a sound engineer, Blair formed a group with other Colombians, mingling Costenos (coastal Colombians) and Bogota natives, a mix that was unheard of at the time. Sidestepper were born. The group helped make Afro-Colombian music hip in Colombia -- and in clubs around the world -- by mixing it with hip-hop and electronica. In 2003, 3 AM (In Beats We Trust) launched two great singles, "Deja" and "Mas Papaya," and made the group a club chill-room favorite. After a long hiatus, Sidestepper returned with The Buena Vibra Sound System in 2008.

Zap Mama are more than a women's A Capella group, they are a multi-cultural performance group of world class quality. Created by musicologist Marie Daulne in Brussels, Belgium with a few other women of mixed Belgian/Congolese ancestry, the band mixes African, European and American traditions into a new world synthesis. Their melange of elements includes Gospel, Soul, rap, Medieval, Aborigine, Moorish, Doo-Wop, Afro-Cuban, animal sounds, vocal percussion, and the recent addition of drum and bass. Notable for using Pygmy polyphony vocal technique and singing in many tongues, Zap Mama have a strong sense of theater that makes them powerful live performers. Who else could get an audience of a thousand to sing a hauntingly beautiful chant to Zambea, the Pygmy god of peace, in perfect harmony and fade together to a whisper?

At first glance, Issa Bagayogo has the typical rags-to-riches story: young son of a farming family in Mali begins to play music, moves to the city, and hits the big time. The reality is somewhat messier than that. It took Bagayogo several cassettes and a change in producers before his sound took off, and in the meantime he moved back home once or twice, watched his marriage fall apart, and suffered bouts of depression and addiction. A mix of luck and perseverance led to a third opportunity to record, however -- this time with French producer Yves Wernert. Wernert encouraged a reluctant Bagayogo to mix his traditional ngoni (six-stringed lute) playing with modern electronics. Bagayogo's reluctance must have evaporated when 1998's Sya became a national best seller and earned him the award of Mali's "Brightest New Hope" a year later. 2002's Timbuktu fared even better, gaining a world audience captivated by Bagayogo's spare, bluesy ngoni playing, velvety voice, and hybrid instrumentation.

New York underground scenesters Ori Kaplan and Tamir Muskat have been wreaking musical mayhem for years in bands as diverse as Gogol Bordello and Firewater. But their project Balkan Beat Box may up the ante, straining Eastern European folk music through a dubby, electronica-heavy sensibility. They recorded their 2005 self-titled debut before they'd actually performed live, but crafting a dynamic stage presence wasn't hard for the consummate performers: they gained accolades on tours with acts such as Matisyahu and at festival appearances. Their 2007 release, Nu Med, drew on the band's live dynamism, simultaneously looking farther afield for influences and forming a more cohesive sound. Unofficial kings of the burgeoning gypsy punk movement, the band signals an ongoing -- and welcome -- sea-change in ideas about what constitutes hip dance music.

Senegalese artist Baaba Maal is a giant of world music, blowing away audiences all over the globe and achieving legendary status on his home continent. His high, uplifting vocals, powerfully plaintive wails and twisting melodies can send shivers down your spine and raise the hair on the back of your neck. Often accompanied by a variety of African instruments such as the kora (a harp/lute hybrid), Maal takes advantage of sprawling backing ensembles sparked by tight rhythms, a bright chorus of singers, colorful brass and everything from Celtic pipes to Western dance beats. Not only is he an intense performer, but his compositions are righteous, standing up for oppressed people of the world, women in particular. There is a folkloric quality to the tales he weaves, best experienced during one of his intense live jams.

This New Delhi-based group jumped on the Asian Underground bandwagon early on and became the first Indian electronic outfit signed to an international label. Founders Gaurav Raina and Tapan Raj are children of modern India -- steeped in the pop, classical and folk traditions of their country and, as young adults, exposed to the hip-hop, house and drum 'n' bass coming out of Europe and America. Both Raina and Raj felt the international electronic scene didn't draw on the richness of India's music or speak as much as it could to Indian fans. They set up a series of dance parties (Cyber Mehfils) in Delhi and started recording at night. They eventually drew the attention of Talvin Singh, who promptly put them on a compilation and helped launch their career.

World music's latest darling and 2002 winner of the BBC Radio 3's Newcomer Award, Susheela Raman flipped the script on world music hybrids when she released Salt Rain in 2001. The album was everything you could want in a cross-genre effort: intelligent, nuanced and, best of all, never watered down. Born in South India and raised in Australia, Raman grew up singing Carnatic classical music and later studied under the great Hindustani vocalist Shruti Sadolikar. But classical music wasn't her only focus; she also fell in love with blues and jazz, and it was her desire to stay true to all her musical influences that led to the genre-pushing Salt Rain and 2003's Love Trap.

Israel's first international pop star, Haza was one of the first divas of Worldbeat to emerge in the 1980s. Born to Yemenite refugees in Israel, a background in theatre led her to singing. Haza's gorgeous voice and mix of material made her popular in Europe, but more uniquely, also popular in the Arab world. Impassioned vocals and heavy percussion similar to that found in bellydance music distinguished her songs from their traditional Yemenite roots. Her deep vocal presence and smooth phrasing, notable for its sustained trills and soaring flights into higher registers, have been sampled by rappers and landed her in collaborations with western acts such as Sisters of Mercy, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and producer Don Was. Later in her career, Haza began to sing in English more; and while some of that music is dated by its production values (e.g., lightweight synthesizer tones), most of her work remains solid.

Under the auspices of New York-based producer/composer David Schommer, the Bole 2 Harlem project forced a musical culture clash that -- like so many peanut-butter-and-chocolate scenarios -- ended up working better than anyone could have dreamed. Schommer corralled Gigi Shibabaw's little sister Tigist and Ethiopian rapper Maki Siraj, both of whom he knew from the local music scene, to wreak gentle hip-hop havoc on the ethereal, otherworldly Ethopian pop tradition. (Schommer acted as the glue that held the band together long enough to record its first release, Bole 2 Harlem, Vol. 1.) The album features Tigist singing and Siraj rapping, and rounds out the sound with several local Ethiopian session men. But while many hip-hop bands in Ethiopia mimic American rappers down to the accent, Bole 2 Harlem flips the script, turning cultural appropriation into cultural dialog. At its best, the band's debut moves beyond genre and into, quite simply, good music. Sadly, with members scattered and working day jobs, we may not see a second volume, though Schommer is reportedly working on a Brazil 2 Harlem project now. Stay tuned.

Mapfumo's highly charged "chimurenga music" (music of struggle or justice) is revolutionary in many ways. In 1977 he was arrested and contained for political subversion, then obtained his release for a reconciliatory concert -- where he proceeded to play the offending songs as if nothing had happened. In terms of sound, Mapfumo was the first to break out of traditional forms and Western imitation, transferring mbira (thumb piano) lines to guitars and adding a U.S. Soul influence. Mapfumo's deep vocals lead his tight, rhythmic band the Blacks Unlimited through upbeat originals, driven by complicated rhythmic grooves and thick layers of melody that would entrance you if you tried to single them out. Add an offbeat bassline, and this classic Zimbabwean performer's grooves become irresistible African dance anthems.

The Yoshida Brothers are part of a new wave of shamisen players in Japan that pair a deep respect for the instrument's roots in folk traditions with a strong interest in pop and rock experimentation. The brothers grew up in Noboribetsu, Hokkaido, and each began studying the three-string Japanese lute at age five, primarily pursuing the Tsugaru-jamisen genre. They have gone on to become respected traditional masters, winning national shamisen competitions and releasing a highly successful folk debut that earned a Traditional Japanese Music Album of the Year award at the Japan Golden Disc Awards. Ryoichiro and Kenichi are also known as innovators, pioneering an aggressive, almost electric guitar-esque playing style and adding dance beats, pop stylings and blues-rock elements to their recordings. The combination of innovation and tradition has garnered the Brothers an international reputation, as well as the deal that has arguably made them the most famous: In 2006, Nintendo began using their song "Kodo (Inside the Sun Remix)" for the popular commercials for their Wii gaming system.
