Krishna Das was born in the United States and traveled to India in the late 1960s with his mentor Ram Dass to study with Dass's guru, the Maharaj-ji. After years of study and devotional practice, Das returned to the States, determined to bring Indian religious chants to the American public. He founded the world music label Triloka Records and began releasing solo albums that mixed traditional sacred music with electronic flourishes.

Jagjit Singh and his wife Chitra are considered to be single-handedly responsible for the revival of ghazal as a music form. The couple met in Mumbai in the 1970s; both were singing advertising jingles while hoping to break into the music industry. They began singing together at mehfils (intimate musical gatherings), and their renderings of the light classical ghazal -- which had fallen in popularity for years -- drew a huge following. In 1976 they released their debut album, aptly named The Unforgettables. This launched them into the stratosphere: a string of hit albums followed. Though Singh seldom recorded for the film industry, films like Arth and Saath Saath benefited from his contributions, and ghazals reappeared in films largely because of the duo.

Anoushka is Ravi Shankar's legitimate daughter and she rivals Norah Jones -- if not outdoes her -- in sheer musicality. But what can you expect from a girl who started studying music with her father, the world's most famous sitar player, when she was just nine years old? Granted, her father wasn't too interested in teaching Anoushka to play sitar, probably due to some residual cultural sexism, but with her mother's intercession the elder Shankar conceded. It was a good thing, too; within four years Anoushka was making waves with her first public performance (in New Delhi) and a guest spot on her father's 1994 release, In Celebration. Shankar released her first solo recording, the aptly named Anoushka, in 1998 to critical acclaim. Anourag followed, and in 2001 her Live At Carnegie Hall was nominated for a Best World Music Album Grammy, making her the youngest nominee ever for that honor. Somewhere in the mix Shankar had also become a master classical pianist -- and this was all before she turned 22 years old. Shankar took a much-needed sabbatical in 2004, though the break proved to be more productive than she'd expected: she wrote her first short film score and came up with material for a new solo release, 2005's Rise. A personal and unconventional album, Rise takes its inspiration from classical Indian ragas -- actually moving through a full cycle of morning to evening ragas from start to finish -- while radically re-imagining the form. Collaborators on the album include South Indian slide guitarist Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and flamenco pianist Ricardo Mino, and Shankar experiments ably with an ambient soundscape that at times recalls the best work of film composer A.R. Rahman.

By some counts, Asha Bhosle has been the playback singer for over 588 movies; she is one of the premier voices of Indian cinema along with her sister, the renowned Lata Mangeshkar. Bhosle got her start in film at the age of 10, in 1943, acting in a Marathi film called Majha Bal. Blessed with an innate gift for mimicry, the native Marathi speaker was soon singing in Punjabi, Bengali and Hindi; she had her Hindi debut in Hansraj Bahl's Chunaria in 1948. (Later in her career, Bhosle would take on Russian, Malay and other languages.) But success didn't come easily to the singer. Her older sister had won the hearts of most composers, and through the 1950s Bhosle took any song she could get, vying with Geeta Dutt for second place in the public's affections. Though the sisters shared a duet in the 1951 film Daman, their relationship was famously acrimonious during this period. Bhosle's underdog status led her to become a bit more risqué than Mangeshkar, and she was lucky enough to work for one director who preferred her to Lata and helped her develop a distinctive identity: O.P. Nayyar. Their string of hits included "Chainse Hum Ko Kabhi" (Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye), "Aankhon Se Jo Uttari..." (Phir Who Dil Laya Hoon), and "Chhota Sa Baalama" (Raagini). In the '60s Bhosle's star rose, and she won of string of Filmfare awards for Best Female Playback Singer for movies including Rangeela, Naina, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Caravan, and Dus Lakh. R.D. Burman also began to work more with Bhosle, and the two married in 1979. Bhosle has never been afraid to cross boundaries; she's worked with Boy George and Ornette Coleman, among others, and was the first Indian vocalist to be nominated for a Grammy in 1997.

Kiran Ahluwalia might just be the bridge that ghazal needs to cross over to Western audiences. Born in Punjab and raised in Canada, Ahluwalia grew up immersed in Western culture but loving classical Indian dance and song. After a brief attempt to be dutiful and sensible (studying industrial relations and taking a day job), the muse's call proved stronger than duty: Ahluwalia quit her job and headed to India, where after some difficulty she found a master to study with in the form of Hyderabad's Vithal Rao. After various stints at Putumayo and working as a bonds trader (!), she finally recorded her debut, Attraction, and released it in 2001. Widely acclaimed for her unorthodox instrumentation and accessible style, Ahluwalia released Beyond Boundaries in 2003 and won a Juno Award for Best World Music Recording in 2004. In 2005 she signed with Triloka, which released selections from her first two albums on one self-titled disc.

Talat Mahmood was one of the most respected voices in Bollywood for years. Born into a prominent Lucknow family, Mahmood came to prominence as a ghazal singer, thanks in part to the huge 1944 hit "Tasveer Teri Dil Mera Behela Na Sakegi." He began singing and acting a bit in Calcutta's film industry and made a successful move to Bombay in 1949. His good looks and polished manners only helped his reputation as an adept, smooth artist who could both sing and act. Known as the King of Ghazal, Mahmood passed away in 1998.
