Anoushka is Ravi Shankar's legitimate daughter and she rivals Norah Jones -- if not outdoes her -- in sheer musicality. But what can you expect from a girl who started studying music with her father, the world's most famous sitar player, when she was just nine years old? Granted, her father wasn't too interested in teaching Anoushka to play sitar, probably due to some residual cultural sexism, but with her mother's intercession the elder Shankar conceded. It was a good thing, too; within four years Anoushka was making waves with her first public performance (in New Delhi) and a guest spot on her father's 1994 release, In Celebration. Shankar released her first solo recording, the aptly named Anoushka, in 1998 to critical acclaim. Anourag followed, and in 2001 her Live At Carnegie Hall was nominated for a Best World Music Album Grammy, making her the youngest nominee ever for that honor. Somewhere in the mix Shankar had also become a master classical pianist -- and this was all before she turned 22 years old. Shankar took a much-needed sabbatical in 2004, though the break proved to be more productive than she'd expected: she wrote her first short film score and came up with material for a new solo release, 2005's Rise. A personal and unconventional album, Rise takes its inspiration from classical Indian ragas -- actually moving through a full cycle of morning to evening ragas from start to finish -- while radically re-imagining the form. Collaborators on the album include South Indian slide guitarist Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and flamenco pianist Ricardo Mino, and Shankar experiments ably with an ambient soundscape that at times recalls the best work of film composer A.R. Rahman.

Sultan Khan is arguably the world's hippest classical Indian musician, after Zakir Hussain. A master of the sarangi, a multi-stringed, bowed instrument, Khan was trained in the Indora gharana (school). He followed in the footsteps of his father, Ustad Gulab Khan, and grandfather, Ustad Azim Khan, who were both celebrated sarangi players and vocalists. Long respected as a master in the Hindustani classical tradition, Khan's career has seen a resurgance in recent years as he's branched out to embrace new-fangled electronica-classical hybrids. He's appeared on DJ Cheb I Sabbah's Sri Durga and worked with Asian Underground outfit Tabla Beat Science and Zakir Hussain's Masters of Percussion.

World music's latest darling and 2002 winner of the BBC Radio 3's Newcomer Award, Susheela Raman flipped the script on world music hybrids when she released Salt Rain in 2001. The album was everything you could want in a cross-genre effort: intelligent, nuanced and, best of all, never watered down. Born in South India and raised in Australia, Raman grew up singing Carnatic classical music and later studied under the great Hindustani vocalist Shruti Sadolikar. But classical music wasn't her only focus; she also fell in love with blues and jazz, and it was her desire to stay true to all her musical influences that led to the genre-pushing Salt Rain and 2003's Love Trap.

Formerly the Ali Khan Band, Shabaz are actually part of an eleven-generation continuum: the brother and sister duo at the heart of the band are the children of the great classical singer Salamat Ali Khan, and their lineage reportedly extends back to court singers for Akbar the Great. Sukhawat and Riffat joined with Riffat's husband Richard Michos, a guitarist and producer, to use their classical training in new settings. The resulting fusion of jazz, Hindustani classical, rock and electronica has caught the ears of luminaries like DJ Cheb I Sabbah, among others.

Kiran Ahluwalia might just be the bridge that ghazal needs to cross over to Western audiences. Born in Punjab and raised in Canada, Ahluwalia grew up immersed in Western culture but loving classical Indian dance and song. After a brief attempt to be dutiful and sensible (studying industrial relations and taking a day job), the muse's call proved stronger than duty: Ahluwalia quit her job and headed to India, where after some difficulty she found a master to study with in the form of Hyderabad's Vithal Rao. After various stints at Putumayo and working as a bonds trader (!), she finally recorded her debut, Attraction, and released it in 2001. Widely acclaimed for her unorthodox instrumentation and accessible style, Ahluwalia released Beyond Boundaries in 2003 and won a Juno Award for Best World Music Recording in 2004. In 2005 she signed with Triloka, which released selections from her first two albums on one self-titled disc.

Veena Sahasrabuddhe is one of the best-known and most favored classical Hindustani singers performing in India today. One listen and it's not hard to hear why: she follows the ragas through the most complicated harmonic twists and turns, adding stunning displays of note-changing vibrato that will leave you absolutely breathless. A member of the prestigious Gwalior gharana (or school), Sahasrabuddhe's style is direct and complex, and draws lightly on other traditions to supplement her own rich teachings. As the artist herself says on her website, "Try a song. It won't bite you!"

Born into a Brahmin family in 1926, the young Lakshmi Shankar stunned her family when she chose to train as a dancer. Her skills brought her success and forestalled social criticism: she became a member of the dance troupe of Uday Shankar (Ravi's older brother) and achieved critical success until a prolonged bout of pleurisy left her unable to dance. Devastated, Shankar threw herself into studies of vocal Hindustani classical music (she'd already studied Carnatic music) and ended up working with the greats, including Pandit Ravi Shankar himself. Though she briefly sang playback in Bollywood, Shankar preferred bhajans and traditional classical music. Renowned for her tone and precise vocalizations, Shankar has continued performing into her ninth decade.
