As the best known Indian musician, Shankar has helped expand the traditionally closed repertoire of North Indian Classical music. Under the guidance of guru Allauddin Khan, father of Ali Akbar Khan, Shankar forged a split from the more traditional styles of the equally important playing school led by Vilayat Khan. Shankar's initial innovation was a buzzier tone and flashier playing techniques that clashed with the sitar's historically more serious, solemn tone, drawing criticism from more conservative musicians. Collaborations with Western Artists such as Yehudi Menuhin and The Beatles further opened the music's boundaries, paving the way for more experimental outings by artists including Zakir Hussain and Trilok Gurtu. Though his sound became synonymous with psychedelia in the '60s, Shankar did not enjoy the role of "trip" leader. Indeed, it takes a very clear mind and vigorous practice to reach the level of technical mastery and spiritual power that Shankar has achieved.

Krishna Das was born in the United States and traveled to India in the late 1960s with his mentor Ram Dass to study with Dass's guru, the Maharaj-ji. After years of study and devotional practice, Das returned to the States, determined to bring Indian religious chants to the American public. He founded the world music label Triloka Records and began releasing solo albums that mixed traditional sacred music with electronic flourishes.

Jagjit Singh and his wife Chitra are considered to be single-handedly responsible for the revival of ghazal as a music form. The couple met in Mumbai in the 1970s; both were singing advertising jingles while hoping to break into the music industry. They began singing together at mehfils (intimate musical gatherings), and their renderings of the light classical ghazal -- which had fallen in popularity for years -- drew a huge following. In 1976 they released their debut album, aptly named The Unforgettables. This launched them into the stratosphere: a string of hit albums followed. Though Singh seldom recorded for the film industry, films like Arth and Saath Saath benefited from his contributions, and ghazals reappeared in films largely because of the duo.

World music's latest darling and 2002 winner of the BBC Radio 3's Newcomer Award, Susheela Raman flipped the script on world music hybrids when she released Salt Rain in 2001. The album was everything you could want in a cross-genre effort: intelligent, nuanced and, best of all, never watered down. Born in South India and raised in Australia, Raman grew up singing Carnatic classical music and later studied under the great Hindustani vocalist Shruti Sadolikar. But classical music wasn't her only focus; she also fell in love with blues and jazz, and it was her desire to stay true to all her musical influences that led to the genre-pushing Salt Rain and 2003's Love Trap.

Anoushka is Ravi Shankar's legitimate daughter and she rivals Norah Jones -- if not outdoes her -- in sheer musicality. But what can you expect from a girl who started studying music with her father, the world's most famous sitar player, when she was just nine years old? Granted, her father wasn't too interested in teaching Anoushka to play sitar, probably due to some residual cultural sexism, but with her mother's intercession the elder Shankar conceded. It was a good thing, too; within four years Anoushka was making waves with her first public performance (in New Delhi) and a guest spot on her father's 1994 release, In Celebration. Shankar released her first solo recording, the aptly named Anoushka, in 1998 to critical acclaim. Anourag followed, and in 2001 her Live At Carnegie Hall was nominated for a Best World Music Album Grammy, making her the youngest nominee ever for that honor. Somewhere in the mix Shankar had also become a master classical pianist -- and this was all before she turned 22 years old. Shankar took a much-needed sabbatical in 2004, though the break proved to be more productive than she'd expected: she wrote her first short film score and came up with material for a new solo release, 2005's Rise. A personal and unconventional album, Rise takes its inspiration from classical Indian ragas -- actually moving through a full cycle of morning to evening ragas from start to finish -- while radically re-imagining the form. Collaborators on the album include South Indian slide guitarist Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and flamenco pianist Ricardo Mino, and Shankar experiments ably with an ambient soundscape that at times recalls the best work of film composer A.R. Rahman.

Sharma is one of the leading performers of the santoor, an Indian instrument similar to a hammered dulcimer. The sound is much like a harp, or a lute, creating a cascade of notes that follow the twists and turns of whichever raga Sharma chooses to play. He's generally accompanied by tabla and tanpura, making up for the limitations of his instrument (notes may not be bent) by keeping some notes ringing to blend into further passages. Sharma has played with many of the greatest Indian musicians, including Zakir Hussain and Ali Akbar Khan, continually developing new techniques for his instrument, while remaining respectful of tradition.

The stories of Zakir Hussain's training are legendary: 40 days of fasting and sleep deprivation capped a childhood of routinely practicing 18 hours per day. His father and guru Alla Rahka (one of India's most distinguished performers himself) taught Hussain the techniques of memorizing ridiculously long strings of percussive permutations and translating them to the tablas. Hussain was extremely young when he began to accompany some of India's most famous musicians, such as Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan, before leaving to team up with guitarist John McLaughlin to form Shakti. One of his greatest contributions has been successful attempts at blending North Indian Classical music with Western music. Collaborations with Bill Laswell and Mickey Hart (of the Grateful Dead) have produced multi-cultural percussive mixtures enhanced by top-notch musicians from around the world. Seeing Hussain perform is magical: his fingers fly faster than the eye, synchronized with an empathic understanding of his fellow musicians.

Sultan Khan is arguably the world's hippest classical Indian musician, after Zakir Hussain. A master of the sarangi, a multi-stringed, bowed instrument, Khan was trained in the Indora gharana (school). He followed in the footsteps of his father, Ustad Gulab Khan, and grandfather, Ustad Azim Khan, who were both celebrated sarangi players and vocalists. Long respected as a master in the Hindustani classical tradition, Khan's career has seen a resurgance in recent years as he's branched out to embrace new-fangled electronica-classical hybrids. He's appeared on DJ Cheb I Sabbah's Sri Durga and worked with Asian Underground outfit Tabla Beat Science and Zakir Hussain's Masters of Percussion.

A child prodigy turned tireless composer, master of the chitra veena, and a prolific composer, Chitravina N. Ravikiran is the kind of musician who inspires legends during his lifetime. There's the story that he gave a non-stop, 24-hour recital when he was just 18 years old (true). There's the story about his concert debut -- at age 2 (also true). Ravikiran has mastered and composed in nearly all the talas of the Carnatic tradition, and he's branched out to fusion collaborations including 1994's Mumtaz Mahal with V.M. Bhatt and Taj Mahal. He also happens to be one of India's -- and the world's -- greatest living musicians.

By some counts, Asha Bhosle has been the playback singer for over 588 movies; she is one of the premier voices of Indian cinema along with her sister, the renowned Lata Mangeshkar. Bhosle got her start in film at the age of 10, in 1943, acting in a Marathi film called Majha Bal. Blessed with an innate gift for mimicry, the native Marathi speaker was soon singing in Punjabi, Bengali and Hindi; she had her Hindi debut in Hansraj Bahl's Chunaria in 1948. (Later in her career, Bhosle would take on Russian, Malay and other languages.) But success didn't come easily to the singer. Her older sister had won the hearts of most composers, and through the 1950s Bhosle took any song she could get, vying with Geeta Dutt for second place in the public's affections. Though the sisters shared a duet in the 1951 film Daman, their relationship was famously acrimonious during this period. Bhosle's underdog status led her to become a bit more risqué than Mangeshkar, and she was lucky enough to work for one director who preferred her to Lata and helped her develop a distinctive identity: O.P. Nayyar. Their string of hits included "Chainse Hum Ko Kabhi" (Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye), "Aankhon Se Jo Uttari..." (Phir Who Dil Laya Hoon), and "Chhota Sa Baalama" (Raagini). In the '60s Bhosle's star rose, and she won of string of Filmfare awards for Best Female Playback Singer for movies including Rangeela, Naina, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Caravan, and Dus Lakh. R.D. Burman also began to work more with Bhosle, and the two married in 1979. Bhosle has never been afraid to cross boundaries; she's worked with Boy George and Ornette Coleman, among others, and was the first Indian vocalist to be nominated for a Grammy in 1997.

Kiran Ahluwalia might just be the bridge that ghazal needs to cross over to Western audiences. Born in Punjab and raised in Canada, Ahluwalia grew up immersed in Western culture but loving classical Indian dance and song. After a brief attempt to be dutiful and sensible (studying industrial relations and taking a day job), the muse's call proved stronger than duty: Ahluwalia quit her job and headed to India, where after some difficulty she found a master to study with in the form of Hyderabad's Vithal Rao. After various stints at Putumayo and working as a bonds trader (!), she finally recorded her debut, Attraction, and released it in 2001. Widely acclaimed for her unorthodox instrumentation and accessible style, Ahluwalia released Beyond Boundaries in 2003 and won a Juno Award for Best World Music Recording in 2004. In 2005 she signed with Triloka, which released selections from her first two albums on one self-titled disc.

Trilok Gurtu is a jazz percussionist who's played with everyone from Don Cherry, Bill Evans, Pat Metheny and John McLaughlin to Zakir Hussain and Asha Bhosle. His trademark East-West drumkit and elastic style have earned him accolades -- and four Downbeat awards. His own albums hew toward fusion: on 2001's The Beat of Love he brought African pop into the fold, enlisting help from African singers Angelique Kidjo and Salif Keita, among others. In recent years the Asian Underground has taken to Gurtu -- electronica artists like Nitin Sawney and Talvin Singh cite him as an influence and spin his records at club nights. His mother is the great classical (and fusion) singer Shobha Gurtu.

The whispery vibrato of a melody performed on the bansuri -- a bamboo flute from India -- is enough to send chills down your spine. When that melody is played by Hariprasad Chaurasia, it is taken to another level. Accompanied by the driving pitter-patter of a tabla drum and a backing drone, Hariprasad's twisting sound can be dreamlike, airy or incredibly fast and tense. Practicing for 12 hours a day gave him the mastery over hundreds of North Indian raags -- groupings of notes performed according to complex sets of rules. Collaborations with Shiv Kumar Sharma, a performer of the zither-like santoor, helped establish Hariprasad as a major voice in Indian music. His complete control of scales, repertoire and melody helped make the bansuri a respectable instrument, suitable for performing Indian Classical music -- it had formerly been considered "unclean" because it is played with the lips.

Sangand Martand Pandit Jasraj is a contemporary genius of Classical Indian singing. His vocal skills are incredible. He has a range of more than three and a half octaves, and can hit every note (and every in-between note) with stunning accuracy and a speed that suggests Pavarotti with his throat attached to a motor-boat engine. His initial teachers were his late father Pandit Motiramji, of the Mewati gharana of singing, and his late brother Sangeet Mahamahopadhaya Pandit Manijiramji. His performances are generally accompanied by tabla and harmonium, propelling his vocal melodies to spiritual heights and ecstatic peaks.

By exhibiting outstanding technical mastery and expanding the expressive range of the santoor (a hammered dulcimer/zither-like instrument with over a hundred strings), Tarun Bhattacharya has become a rapidly rising star in North Indian Classical music. His rounded, percussive sounding melodies ring out with purity and a mastery of the inner workings of many ragas. Bhattacharya's teachers have been among the best -- Ravi Shankar has impressed many listeners with his combination of speed and melodic beauty, much of which he passed on to Bhattacharya. Like his other teacher, Shiv Kumar Sharma, Bhattacharya has pioneered new sounds on the santoor, including an added string which can be bent, allowing for more vocal-like effects to be added to the instrument's repertoire.

Formerly the Ali Khan Band, Shabaz are actually part of an eleven-generation continuum: the brother and sister duo at the heart of the band are the children of the great classical singer Salamat Ali Khan, and their lineage reportedly extends back to court singers for Akbar the Great. Sukhawat and Riffat joined with Riffat's husband Richard Michos, a guitarist and producer, to use their classical training in new settings. The resulting fusion of jazz, Hindustani classical, rock and electronica has caught the ears of luminaries like DJ Cheb I Sabbah, among others.

Born into a Brahmin family in 1926, the young Lakshmi Shankar stunned her family when she chose to train as a dancer. Her skills brought her success and forestalled social criticism: she became a member of the dance troupe of Uday Shankar (Ravi's older brother) and achieved critical success until a prolonged bout of pleurisy left her unable to dance. Devastated, Shankar threw herself into studies of vocal Hindustani classical music (she'd already studied Carnatic music) and ended up working with the greats, including Pandit Ravi Shankar himself. Though she briefly sang playback in Bollywood, Shankar preferred bhajans and traditional classical music. Renowned for her tone and precise vocalizations, Shankar has continued performing into her ninth decade.

One of the leading young performers of Hindustani vocal music, Khan is the great-grandson of Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan Saheb, founder of the Rampur Sahaswan Gharana. His studies with great-uncle Nissar Hussain Khan have allowed him to pick up on the intricacies of this fine musical lineage. His voice is powerful with a somber edge, sustaining for what seems like minutes as he weaves through various ragas in both serious and light classical settings. He has many fans, including singer/sitarist Vilayat Khan and singer Bhimsen Joshi, who has called Khan India's top young singer. Khan's first performance was at age eleven in 1977, but it was his interpretation of raga Yaman that established him in the early 1990s as one of the very best.

A true master of the sarod, the sonorous fretless lute popular in North Indian classical music, few players match Amjad Ali Khan's artistry. Khan's even got www.sarod.com locked up as his personal Web page -- no doubt infuriating other maestros such as Ali Akbar Khan. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan belongs to the Senia Bangash gharana of playing, a lineage of musicians that stretches back six generations to the great innovator of Indian music, Mian Tansen, court musician of Emperor Akbar. His playing has a warmth and powerful emotional feel which is never overpowered by his considerable chops. Most of his performances come off with a strong vocal feel, with haunting glissandos and adrenaline-building runs. Khan has been open to cross-cultural collaborations, performing with diverse artists including jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

An intensely talented South Indian violinist and a pioneer in fusing Indian and Western music, Lakshminarayan Shankar moved to the United States in the late 1960s and consorted with top jazz musicians including Ornette Coleman and John McLaughlin. He went on to form the influential group Shakti in the '60s with McLaughlin. Shankar's playing is a perfect example of why the violin is so well suited to Indian classical music -- with a quivering slide, Shankar can replicate the emotional qualities of the human voice before slipping into a mind-bogglingly fast run through a traditional raga. On his solo albums, Shankar often switches between playing strict classical music and a more progressive Fusion of jazz and other music, calling on like-minded players such as Zakir Hussain and Trilok Gurtu to provide rhythmic backing. Working on projects with players as diverse as Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Bill Laswell and Frank Zappa has also helped promote Shankar's name.

Perhaps best known to western audiences for his Grammy-winning 1994 collaboration with Ry Cooder, A Meeting By the River, V.M. Bhatt is not just a classical Indian musician -- he actually created his own instrument, the Mohan Veena. The Mohan Veena is a 19-stringed hybrid slide guitar inspired by Hawaiian guitar and played lap-style. Justly recognized as a technical master, Bhatt is perhaps the most celebrated of Ravi Shankar's disciples, and he has won numerous awards and toured the world.

Gurbachan Singh Sachdev is the kind of musical icon you can't mess with. As the world's acknowledged master of the bamboo flute, or bansuri, he's got cred to burn and his music is the kind of stuff that will transfix angry animals and encourage serpents to coil back into their lairs. But it wasn't always smooth sailing for Sachdev, who was born into a nonmusical Punjabi family. As a child he was transfixed by shepherds' flute playing and by the time he was 14 he knew he wanted to play music, though his father was deeply opposed. Fortunately his music-loving mother (who was also a singer and harmonium player in her own right) continued to encourage his love of music. After college, it took Sachdev six years to find Vijay Raghav Rao, his musical guru, whom he studied with for the next 12 years. Together they found work in the Bombay film industry but Sachdev ultimately abandoned Bollywood's westernized compositions -- and avoided fashionable fusions -- to continue exploring the depths of traditional classical music. The choice paid off: Sachdev's recordings and live performances are renowned for their subtlety, tonal richness and emotional heft.

The mandolin is not the first instrument on which you'd expect to hear strict Indian classical music played, but Mozdumer renders ragas perfectly, creating a sound that's something like a cross between a sitar and guitar. The instrument is larger than a Western mandolin, with thick, heavy strings that emit a deep, mournful sound with a slightly twangy edge. The melodies display slight bends (sruti) or blistering passages that take you through myriad emotions; the compositions are often meant to accompany times of day or a specific season. He uses the instrument to its fullest, brushing the non-melody strings much like a sitar player uses his drones to generate excitement and enhance the rhythmic sections of a piece. Accompanied by excellent tabla drumming from performers such as Subhen Chatterjee.

Bhattacharya's brain-stretching slide guitar epitomizes world music at its world-iest: a singer trained in his family's classical Gwalior style, Bhattacharya picked up a Hawaiian steel guitar when he was just five years old and never looked back. His sound still traffics in the heady, melodically complex world of Indian classical music, but he has invented his own slide guitars to retain a Hawaiian tone while expanding his musical range. The 22-string chaturangi can imitate sounds as diverse as violin, sarod and sitar; the 14-string ghandarvi veers from sounding like a flamenco guitar to a sarangi; and the tiny anandi has only four strings. He has also created new finger and playing styles that have led to unbelievably fast playing, much of which was never possible before. The result? Music that never compromises its roots, though it fiddles with them gleefully. Only a few other musicians have visited the hypothetical musical world that lives between the South Pacific and South Asia, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Ry Cooder and Bob Brozman among them. But few can claim Bhattacharya's virtuosity: listening to a raga by the man can be both an emotional and an intellectual journey.

Talat Mahmood was one of the most respected voices in Bollywood for years. Born into a prominent Lucknow family, Mahmood came to prominence as a ghazal singer, thanks in part to the huge 1944 hit "Tasveer Teri Dil Mera Behela Na Sakegi." He began singing and acting a bit in Calcutta's film industry and made a successful move to Bombay in 1949. His good looks and polished manners only helped his reputation as an adept, smooth artist who could both sing and act. Known as the King of Ghazal, Mahmood passed away in 1998.

Bismillah Khan is a master of the shehnai, an ancient Indian wind instrument. Khan grew up in Benares, on the banks of the Ganges, hearing the shehnai used in both folk and sacred settings. As he learned his craft he brought the instrument firmly into classical music, becoming a dearly beloved public figure in the process. For years Khan was revered outside India for his instrumental prowess, but, afraid of flying, he refused international invitations for years. Finally induced (or rather, bribed) by the Indian government to accept an invitation to perform in the UK, Khan lost his fear of flying and spread his music across the globe.
