Lata Mangeshkar is the first voice of Indian film and the most recorded singing artist in history. Her voice provided the soundtrack for at least two generations of Indians and is now a global phenomenon. Mangeshkar actually started out as a bit-part actress in the 1930s. She was born in Goa to a musical family. Her father was a classical musician and dramatist trained in the Gwalior gharana (school). He began teaching Lata music when she was five years old; when he died, she went into film to support her mothers and sisters, singing and acting in any bit part to make money. While her distinctive, high voice was initially derided as too reedy for a lead playback singer, a 1949 quadruple-film attack that included Barsaat and Andaaz rocketed her to the front of the pack. Her style became the norm, while the more throaty style disappeared. After film singer Noor Jehan moved to Pakistan, Mangeshkar's only serious rival was Shamshad Begum, whom she eventually edged out of the running. For the next four decades, most of the top-notch material went to Mangeshkar, and her voice was heard in hundreds of films; some people even accused her of monopolizing the field. Even Lata's younger sister Asha Bhosle, now recognized as one of the
greatest Indian film singers, struggled for years in her sister's shadow. There is no question Lata wielded incredible influence in Bollywood: in the '60s she refused to sing with Mohammed Rafi and for director R.D. Burman over certain disputes, and eventually got her way. She sang in 20 Indian languages and has worked on over 2,000 soundtracks, singing for all the major Indian actresses and in every style from pop to bhajan and back again.

Multi-talented and good at selling himself, Sonu Nigam wears many hats: singer, actor, former child star and television anchorman. A child actor who also sang at wedding parties with his father in Delhi, Nigam hit the big-time when he moved to Bombay at age 18. After a few false starts, had a hit with the song "Achha Sila Diya Tune Mere Pyaar Ka" from the film Bewafa Sanam. That success led to a gig anchoring the popular television music show Sa Re Ga Ma, which in turn paved the way for his career as a pop singer (thanks in no small part to the patronage of now-deceased T-Series bigwig Gulshan Kumar). After several platinum ablums, Nigam shows no signs of slowing down: he won a Filmfare award in 2002 for "Saathiya" from the film of the same name.

He was a natural comedian who craved romantic leads, an actor who may have found his greatest success as a singer, and a multitalented performer who is one of India's best-known voices. Born in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, on August 4, 1929, Kishore Kumar never had any formal musical training, but he was a natural mimic: he taught himself to sing by imitating film superstar K.L. Saigal. In 1947, Kumar followed his brother Ashok to Bombay, where he took forgettable singing and acting gigs until he began to attract attention with songs like "Qusoor Aapka" in the 1951 film Bahar. True acting roles followed, and in 1953 Kumar captured audiences in Ladki. For years, his career knew no boundaries -- until tax problems in the 1960s forced him to take low-grade film jobs to pay the bills. But he rebounded in 1969 with the hit film Aradhana with a soundtrack by S.D. Burman. In 1976, Kumar refused to sing in a propaganda appearance for prime minister Indira Gandhi during her massive crackdown on civil liberties (known as the Emergency), and as a result his songs were banned for years. Though he had a difficult personal life (four marriages!), Kumar brought laughter to millions of people. Asha Bhosle considered him the most spontaneous and innovative singer she'd worked with, and he was known to spend days connecting with a song before recording it. The prolific Kumar performed an estimated 112 songs in S.D. Burman's films alone. He died of a heart attack in 1987.

The consensus is that Alka Yagnik was in the right place at the right time. The place was Bollywood and the time was the '80s -- just as Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar were starting to slow down. The daughter of a classical singer whose dreams of success were cut short by a throat problem, Yagnik claims that her singing was a hobby that evolved almost accidentally into a career. But the truth is she was an All India Radio artist at the age of 8, won a Sugam Sangeet competition in Calcutta at age 11, and was singing for composers like Laxmikant and Rajesh Roshan before she hit puberty. Yagnik broke into films thanks to a few key introductions, and she enjoyed steady work through the '80s but saw no major hits until 1988's "Ek Do Tin Char" for the film Tezaab. Songs like "Panchi Nadiya" (Refugee) and "Tu Mile Dil" (Criminal) only extended her influence, and she's gone on to win four Filmfare awards.

By some estimates, Mohammed Rafi has sung upwards of 26,000 songs, surpassed only by the great Lata Mangeshkar, with whom he shared the world record for many years. Born on December 24, 1924, in what is now Pakistani Punjab, legend has it that the young Rafi was entranced by a local fakir, or holy man, and learned to sing at his knee against his father's wishes. It is known that by the age of seven, Rafi was learning Hindustani classical music with Ustad Bade Gulam Ali Khan and Vahida Khan. When he was 17, he sang his first playback song in the Punjabi film Gul Baloch and moved to Bombay not long after to try his hand in Hindi films. Rafi was illiterate and had to memorize the lyrics to a song before he could record it. It is said, however, that he remembered a melody after hearing it only once and could immediately suggest improvements. While Rafi's early years were scrappy as he vied for attention with singers and actors like Hemant Kumar, Mukesh, Talat Mahmoud, and Manna Dey, he quickly rose to the top of the heap, rivaled only by Kishore Kumar. Movies such as Baiju Bawra and Dulari were watershed events for Rafi, and they initiated the long and fruitful partnerships he enjoyed with composers like Naushad. Unlike Kishore Kumar, Rafi rarely appeared in films himself. He was the voice for all of the cinema greats, including Shammi Kapoor and Sunil Dutt, and he is revered to this day as a singer of uncommon depth and ability. Rafi died in 1980 of a heart attack.

By some counts, Asha Bhosle has been the playback singer for over 588 movies; she is one of the premier voices of Indian cinema along with her sister, the renowned Lata Mangeshkar. Bhosle got her start in film at the age of 10, in 1943, acting in a Marathi film called Majha Bal. Blessed with an innate gift for mimicry, the native Marathi speaker was soon singing in Punjabi, Bengali and Hindi; she had her Hindi debut in Hansraj Bahl's Chunaria in 1948. (Later in her career, Bhosle would take on Russian, Malay and other languages.) But success didn't come easily to the singer. Her older sister had won the hearts of most composers, and through the 1950s Bhosle took any song she could get, vying with Geeta Dutt for second place in the public's affections. Though the sisters shared a duet in the 1951 film Daman, their relationship was famously acrimonious during this period. Bhosle's underdog status led her to become a bit more risqué than Mangeshkar, and she was lucky enough to work for one director who preferred her to Lata and helped her develop a distinctive identity: O.P. Nayyar. Their string of hits included "Chainse Hum Ko Kabhi" (Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye), "Aankhon Se Jo Uttari..." (Phir Who Dil Laya Hoon), and "Chhota Sa Baalama" (Raagini). In the '60s Bhosle's star rose, and she won of string of Filmfare awards for Best Female Playback Singer for movies including Rangeela, Naina, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Caravan, and Dus Lakh. R.D. Burman also began to work more with Bhosle, and the two married in 1979. Bhosle has never been afraid to cross boundaries; she's worked with Boy George and Ornette Coleman, among others, and was the first Indian vocalist to be nominated for a Grammy in 1997.

A talented singer whose career has been inextricably bound to her personal life, Anuradha Paudwal seemed poised to take over Bollywood in the 1980s. She won a series of Filmfare awards for songs in films including Ustav, Aashiqi and Beta, and she was widely sought after. But her outspoken nature didn't serve her well in the film industry's dog-eat-dog atmosphere: Paudwal accused Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle of monopolizing the industry (not far from the truth) and found herself suddenly ostracized -- almost no film director would work with her. She moved to the T-Series label, working with Gulshan Kumar (who was also rumored to be her lover), and her star rose again. Unfortunately, an ill-conceived exclusive deal with T-Series slowed her momentum, and she was largely unheard from in film until after Kumar's untimely demise -- he was murdered in 1997.

Kumar Sanu's voice dominated 1990s Bollywood, which is no surprise considering his numerous comparisons to Kishore Kumar. The 1990 soundtrack for Aashiqui opened the floodgates for Sanu's career; the soundtrack was a phenomenal, award-winning hit that helped Sanu to go on to win five consecutive Filmfare awards (1990-94). After recording hundreds of albums, Sanu began to slow down, becoming more choosy and branching out into acting in films from his native Bengal. Sanu was born Sanu Bhattacharya.

Kavita Krishnamurthy sang her first film song in 1971: a duet with Lata Mangeshkar in the Bengali film Shriman Prithviraj. But it wasn't until 1985's chart-busting "Tumse Milkar Na Jaane Kyon" (from Pyar Jhukta Nahin) that she found the fame she deserved and broke out from her near-exclusive work for Laxmikant Pyarlal. Songs like "Saudagar Sauda Kar" and "Ilu Ilu" (Saudagar), "Mera Piya Ghar Aaya" (Yaraana) and "Mr Lova Lova" (Ishq) propelled her career forward, giving her near-equal footing with the dominant Bhosle/Mangeshkar singing cartel. The greatest leap of faith came with R.D. Burman's 1994 soundtrack for 1942 - A Love Story. Burman chose her as the sole female vocalist for the soundtrack, and his gamble paid off when "Kyon Naye Lag Rahe" won just about every award available.

A singer renowned for his sweet, almost otherworldly timbre, Mukesh is one of the greats of the classic Bollywood period. Early work with the composer Naushad on the soundtracks to Mela (1948) and Andaaz (1949) and with Shankar Jaikishan on the unforgettable Barsaat helped launch his career. He quickly established himself as the voice of actor Raj Kapoor, a fruitful partnership that ran from the late-1940s until the '70s. He was known for years as the "tragedy king" because of his deeply emotive vocal work on sad songs. An ill-advised bid for acting roles in the mid-'50s led to a decline in his fortunes, but Mukesh rebounded later in the decade, returning to singing and remaining in the spotlight until his 1976 death in Detroit.

Born in Punjab in 1926, Noor Jehan's story is intimately tied to India's partition after British rule. She became a singing star in the Bombay film industry in the 1940s, only to return to Pakistan after partition and stay there for decades (until her triumphant return to Bombay for a film celebration in 1982). Classically trained under Ghulam Mohammed Khan, Jehan was a child star in the Calcutta and Punjab film industries. Even at a young age her voice drew attention, but it wasn't until 1941's Urdu-language film Khandaan that Jehan established herself as a huge box office draw in both India and Pakistan. Hindi films like Nadan, Dost and Lal Haveli followed, and her 1945 turn in Zeenat was remarkable not only for her acting but also because it's widely credited with introducing qawaalis into the film repertoire. After a few stormy marriages (and after giving birth to six children), Jehan quit acting in the 1960s and concentrated on her singing until she died in 2000.

A very successful composer and father of composer R.D. Burman, S.D. Burman started out as a singer in Calcutta in the 1930s. Classically trained, he gained fame singing folk and light classical songs on the radio -- but he couldn't parlay his success into the film world. When he shifted to music direction his career took off, and he moved from Calcutta to Bombay in the late '30s. After breaking into the field with Do Bhai, Burman composed unforgettable soundtracks for films including 1950s classics Devdas and Taxi Driver. Burman's compositions were also responsible for forming several singers: 1951's Baazi reinvented Geeta Dutt as a singer of more contemporary (and slightly lascivious) songs, while his work with Asha Bhosle was similarly career-defining. Burman's talents were undiminished even late in life; soundtracks for films like Jewel Thief and Aradhana were huge hits and are classics of the genre.

Though he trained under Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and later worked with his father, the film composer S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman was a product of the swinging '60s and his music reflected it. He'd been composing for films since the late 1950s, but it was 1966's Teesri Manzil soundtrack that launched his signature hip, jazzy style. The soundtracks to films including Caravan, Hare Ram Hare Krishna and Padosan are classics of the genre, and his dominance as a composer lasted well into the 1980s. Burman had also been known to sing on occasion, loaning his gruff bass to a number of film soundtracks including Mehbooba. Despite a few late-breaking hits (Ijaazat and 1942 - A Love Story), Burman's fortunes were declining as a new generation of composers came up behind him. He died of a heart attack in 1994.

Wadkar is a Marathi singer who gained fame singing for Hindi films in the 1970s and '80s. His fairytale story started when he won a singing competition that was being judged by film composers Jaidev and Jaidev. They loved his voice and found him work, and Wadkar then went on to sing for Lata Mangeshkar in person. She was immediately impressed and lobbied for him. While Wadkar's career has slowed down in recent years, he has composed for and sung in a few Marathi-language films.

His brother is Shravan Rathod (of the composing team Nadeem Shravan), his younger brother is playback singer Vinod Rathod, and his father was a classical musician. What choice did Roopkumar Rathod have but to become a musician himself? Though he's best known for his playback and ghazal singing, Rathod was not always a singer: he labored for years as a tabla player. It took the prodding of now-wife Sonali to get him to sing, and the two faced serious opposition for years because of Sonali's divorce from her first husband. The freeze-out didn't last, however, and Rathod's given star turns singing for films like Border, Hero, Hindustani and Kareeb.

This popster-turned-playback-singer is the son of the comedian Mehmood Ali and a gifted singer who initially thought he would be an actor. He had a troubled youth that included rumored drug addiction and an itinerant lifestyle that led him from India to Kentucky and back again. His father even made a film about the fictional results of his addiction. But despite the turmoil Lucky Ali found time to record two well-received pop albums, which led him to film work. The song "Na Tum Jaano Na" from Kaho Na Pyar Hai won Ali every award available in 2000, and has secured Ali's place as both a singer and (if the rumors are true) also a composer in the industry.

One of the great composing duos -- who rarely composed together in actuality -- Shankar Jaikishan set the standard for Indian film music in the 1950s and '60s and won awards well into the 1970s. Shankar Singh and Jaikishan Panchal worked as musicians for Husnlal Bhagatram in the 1940s; they were supposedly discovered by a Bollywood executive when they were giving one of their routine performances on a local train. They became music director Ram Ganguly's chief assistants and helped him compose music for the film Aag. When director Raj Kapoor discovered their role in that soundtrack, he booked them to score Barsaat. That soundtrack's success touched off a cascade of hit soundtracks for major Indian films, including Chori Chori, Brahmchari, Professor and Anari. They could compose classical, folk-based or utterly modern tracks with ease, and they won a record nine Filmfare Awards through the years. Sadly, after a long and hugely successful career together, the duo weren't talking when Jaikishan died in 1971 of alcohol poisoning.

A beloved playback singer who managed to hold her own (as much as anyone could) against the unstoppable Lata Mangeshkar in the 1950s, Geeta Dutt was born in Bengal in 1930. Like most singers, she got into films early, singing her first lines in a film song in 1946. By the end of the '40s it looked like she was the next "it" girl until Lata came along. She worked with music directors like S.D. Burman and O.P. Nayyar and was renowned for the untrained ease with which she sailed through almost any type of song. 1951's Baazi was a high-water mark for her, which led her in a hipper and more risqué direction than she'd taken previously. But in the late-1950s Dutt began having marital troubles with her director husband Guru Dutt. That drama, combined with a growing drinking problem, cost Dutt work as directors found her less and less reliable, especially after her husband died. She sadly died in 1964 of cirrhosis of the liver.

Music directors, brothers and the children of the classical singer Pandit Pratap Narayan (and nephews of the great Pandit Jasraj), Jatin Lalit were possibly the most romantic composers of the 1990s. Despite their classical background, the brothers were raised with western music and instruments, and it shows in their compositions, which generally cleave closer to pop than classical music. Their 1995 soundtrack for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge took India by storm and inaugurated a series of hit soundtracks, including Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kamochi - The Musical, and Ghulam.
