Everyone from the Clash, the Specials, and today's reggae hopefuls have been influenced by ska/reggae superstars Toots and the Maytals. Led by legendary front man Toots Hibbert , the Maytals are responsible for such brilliant international hits as "Pressure Drop" (from The Harder They Come soundtrack), "Broadway Jungle," "Monkey Man," and countless others. The Maytals always maintained a controlled, kinetic energy that, for all its island cool, would not let you rest when you heard it. Now reformed with a new line-up, Toots still sounds like an American R&B singer abducted by Jamaicans -- his clipped, rich vocals could make even the most digitized pop-reggae bristle with genuine, bittersweet emotion.

People who think that the Mighty, Mighty Bosstones invented Ska are about as well-informed as those who think Elvis Presley invented rock 'n' roll. The Skatalites mixed R&B and Afro-Caribbean rhythms some 20-odd years before the Bosstones, reworking the musical blend into steady waves of gently cresting and falling guitars and stand-up bass, heated by blustering horns. The music was infectious and compelling, a sound that would fill dance halls to sweltering capacities as the crowd swayed to the lilting rhythms. Amazingly, the most important band in Ska's history lasted a mere 14 months, after which lead trombonist Don Drummond was put away in a mental institution for murdering his wife, where he died a few years later. The short lifespan of the band did nothing to end their lasting influence, as seen in the resurgence of Ska in Britain and the U.S. in the 1980s and '90s, and in the rise of various subgenres (Reggae, Dub, bluebeat, Rock Steady) created simply by altering Ska's original rhythms. Even today, the Skatalites' recordings and live performances blow every Ska-Punk/Metal/pick-your-hybrid band to smithereens.

You can practically hear the love dripping off each cut from SoCal Ska band Hepcat. Not to be confused with punchy, punky Ska of the 3rd Wavers, Hepcat pay homage to the founding fathers with smooth horns, guitars that gently chank alongside piano plinks, and a rhythm section that knows what it is to percolate.
Byron Lee & the Dragonaires have been Jamaica's musical ambassadors since the band formed in the 1950s. Bolstered by the success of Harry Belafonte's "Day-O," Byron Lee traveled internationally performing classic Calypso material. As the bass player, he anchored a well disciplined band that usually featured several singers (male and female) and a tight horn section. With the birth of Ska in the early '60s they found themselves at the forefront of a contagious new style, landing squarely on the world stage when they appeared in the James Bond film Dr. No. Lee always demanded discipline and a clean-cut appearance from his musicians, and although they became a bit passe in the '70s and '80s, Lee re-emerged in 1990 as the founder of the Jamaican carnival with the Dragonaires leading the way. Recently he's been jamming for Jesus with an unusual Soca/Gospel fusion.

While ska had never been much of a hot commodity outside of Jamaica, save a few rabid fans of the genre in Britain, Desmond Dekker was able to harness an international top ten single with his compelling "Israelites." The song spread like wildfire across the world in 1969, guaranteeing Dekker a place among a short list -- including the Skatalites, Laurel Aitken and Derrick Morgan -- of Ska's most important figures. His success would be consistently precarious despite the profound influence that he would later exert on the legions of Ska-makers who followed in his footsteps, including the bands who composed the 2-Tone roster. After years of languishing in obscurity after the death of his producer and collaborator Leslie Kong in 1971, Dekker would once again regain popularity in the early
'90s based on the use of his "Israelites" in a commercial for Maxwell tapes.

Hands down, Pauline Black possessed the best voice that ever graced a 2-Tone release. Blessed with a bewitching soprano and dramatic panache, Black's voice reached plateaus that made every other musical detail sound like part of a backdrop painted just to set the stage for her entrance. While the Specials were content to merely jazz up old Ska standards, and Madness pleased themselves by playing up the zany angle, the Selecter shuttled through their songs like a band of Ska revisionists, with Black rewriting songs with her voice and leaving her signature in every piercing note. Even if the Specials outsold them and Madness outlasted them, Selecter were arguably the best that 2-Tone had to offer.

Where might Ska be if Derrick Morgan hadn't left his indelible imprint on the genre? Perennially decked out in a pork pie hat and smart, three-button mohair suit, Derrick Morgan began his career playing cover versions of songs by his idol Little Richard, but he quickly moved to embrace the smooth sounds of early Jamaican Ska. His sleek, unruffled vocals added extra cool to his songs, and helped him achieve unparalleled success: Morgan once held all top seven slots on the Jamaican record charts. Not content to rest on his block of hits, the velvet-voiced crooner went on to create albums that stressed innovation, and was even so bold as to meddle with Ska's formula. Slowing its rhythms and tempos to a more languid pace on his later albums, Morgan inadvertently created Rock Steady, and would ultimately be responsible for the first recognized reggae recording, "Seven Letters."

Ranglin has proven to be one of the best and most versatile guitarists in Jamaica's history and an important innovator in the development of Ska. In the late '50s he played in the Blasters, a Jamaican R&B group influenced by American jazz and blues that played shuffling boogies. Ranglin added a hiccupping guitar that was to become the basis for the Ska sound. He then helped form the Skatalites, recording some of the best cuts of the genre. He also worked as a studio guitarist for producers Duke Reid and Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, contributing to many classic Rock Steady and reggae hits. On top of it all, he's an excellent, Wes Montgomery-inspired jazz guitarist, and one of the few musicians in the world to successfully fuse reggae and jazz.

Working back and forth between rival producers Coxsone Dodd and Duke Reid, Ellis became a prolific and extremely popular Rock Steady singer, gracing hundreds of recordings with his unmatched smooth, soulful voice. Unafraid to change with the times, Ellis moved to England in the '70s and slowed down the tempo, recording slick Reggae hits and forging a romantic style that became known as Lovers Rock. His sound has a lot in common with American Soul singers, free of rasp with a gutsy power. In turn, Ellis influenced many singers to come, including Dennis Brown and later Dancehall artists -- all impressed by his vital delivery.

Based around the rich vocals of Leonard Dillon (who would later become "the Ethiopian"), the Ethiopians became one of the most prolific Jamaican groups. Their sound helped to define the sound of Ska, Rock Steady and Roots Reggae with the introduction of percussion and a culturally aware viewpoint. Countless seven-inch records released in the 1960s and '70s featured their trio (and later, duo) vocal stylings over backing tracks by masters Lee Perry, Duke Reid and Coxsone Dodd. Dillon's conscious lyrics continue to open many minds, while his falsetto phrases and irresistible melodies are some of the sweetest that reggae has produced.

Chris Murray (who puts the Chris in Venice Shoreline) is the former lead singer of Canadian Ska-revivin' heroes King Apparatus. Now out on his own, Murray throws off the chains of a full backing band and adopts the DIY ethic, a move that may have been his smartest idea yet. Instead of big, overdrawn numbers with Punk pulsing erratically through their veins, he settles down with his guitar into slow-paced grooves that unhurriedly rock back and forth at the delayed speed of a tipsy sway. Even with his love for Ska's original sound showing through -- these songs have nothing to do with 2-Tone suits or the Mighty Mighty Bosstones -- Murray still emerges as an innovator: the simple four-track recording method keeps songs grounded and gives them an air of simplicity. Like those who have uncovered rock by removing the excess, Murray pulls back unnecessary layers to get down to Ska's bare bones.

A crucial vocal trio that was instrumental in the beginnings of Ska and the worldwide popularizing of Jamaican music, the Pioneers were one of the first Jamaican bands to achieve international chart success. They attracted a large audience in the U.K., mainly within the large skinhead scene brewing in the late 1960s. Their influence was directly felt in many of the Ska Revival bands on the Two-Tone Label, including the Specials, who covered "Long Shot (Kick De Bucket)," and the English Beat, who reworked "Jackpot". Their albums are fast and upbeat, with a warm sound and harmonies that could have been taken directly from an American Soul album. The later albums aren't quite of the same quality, but their early Ska is as good as it gets.

If the Paragons were from Detroit, it's likely Berry Gordy would have snatched them up and made them into world-famous stars, and they'd have lived public lives as long as Methuselah's, thanks to boxed set reissues and endless reunions. Instead, Jamaica's most amazing vocal group blazed at home -- their star did reach as far as Ska-crazed Britain -- until their flame faded to a smoldering cult. Among the finest of Ska's original acts, the Paragons delivered four-part harmonies that comfortably rode waves of music, gliding through verses as if fitted with sails. Their songs didn't rely on Ska's standard props of horns and bass as much as they glorified Soul, placing Ska rhythms beneath vocal lines that could have been bred in the Motor City. The band progressed to Rock Steady before slowing the tempo to Roots Reggae's leisurely pace, eventually performing Dub and Dancehall with new stars such as Yellowman. Unfortunately, outside of Jamaica few know of the Paragons' work, aside from Blondie's impressive interpretation of their classic "The Tide Is High." As is often the case with originals, they've made it into the history books, but only as a footnote.

Not many vocalists could claim to have had hits in the Ska, Rock Steady, Roots Reggae, Lovers Rock and Dancehall eras, but the late Delroy Wilson did just that. His sound rooted in US Soul and R&B bands, Wilson sang with a pure, ringing sound as sweet as that of fellow artists Ken Boothe or Alton Ellis. As an energetic teen in the 1960s, Wilson worked with Coxsone Dodd making classic Ska hits and became one of Reggae's first stars, finding the transition to Rock Steady no problem at all. His writing was so influential that his hit "Better Must Come" helped elect Michael Manley as Jamaica's Prime Minister in the early '70s. One of the greatest, most soulful Jamaican singers ever -- evidenced on his classic cover of Bob Marley's "I'm Still Waiting."

Justin Hinds is one of the few musicians to successfully bridge Ska, Rock Steady, and Roots Reggae, with hits in all three areas. He began his career in the early 1960s with backing singers the Dominoes in tow, and hasn't quit yet -- he can still electrify an audience with a show that feels like a musical history lesson. Balanced by the strong, influential, and conscious lyrics he's been delivering for years, his sweet tenor has a touch of grit to it, making it all the more earthy and real. One of the first to bring Rastafarian ideals into Ska and Rock Steady, Hinds often recites biblical proverbs in his lyrics, with a powerful delivery not lost on performers such as Bob Marley and Burning Spear. His group's fast Ska and slightly slowed down Rock Steady are what they're known for best, but Roots Reggae gems like Jezebel stand out and prove their versatility.

Few would contest the claim that Jackie Mittoo is the most prolific and influential Jamaican keyboard player of modern times. A child prodigy, Mittoo was already playing in professional bands by the time he was a teenager, and in 1964 (at age 15) he was a founding member of seminal Ska group the Skatalites. After they disbanded he hooked up with legendary producer Coxsone Dodd, who had a fledgling recording studio; he served as session man and composer for the famous Studio One label throughout the explosive mid-1960s. He can be heard on literally thousands of recordings, and he is responsible for some of the basic "riddims" of Jamaican music that are still being recycled today. Utilizing a range of tones, his tremolo sustains are famous. and at times his playing sounds downright funky. As in the American South, the church in Jamaica played a vital role in cultivating musical talent, and Mittoo's soulful Hammond B-3 playing demonstrates an ecstatically evangelical fervor.

With deft, but unremarkable interpretations of the soul hits of their day and some sugary original pop tunes, they were local faves who never broke nationally.
The Skatalites were the first to occupy front-and-center position on the Ska stage, and even as the floorboards filled with fans-turned-musicians who hoped to bathe in the same glowing critical spotlight, they've easily stood their ground. That's due in large part to the presence of Don Drummond, trombonist extraordinaire and an all too typical example of the creative genius turned tortured, tragic figure. After being invited to join the Skatalites by pianist Jackie Mittoo, Drummond quickly became the creative center of the band, producing hundreds of well crafted songs in a nine-year period. The Skatalites took off when two of Drummond's songs placed them among the top of the British charts. A manic depressive who had spent years precariously placed on an emotional cliff overlooking an abyss of self-destruction, Drummond finally submitted to his mental illness in 1965, stabbing his girlfriend to death in his home. He spent the remaining four years of his life committed to an asylum, where he died under suspicious and much discussed circumstances at the age of thirty-seven.

One of the most important saxophone players in the history of Jamaican music, Roland Alphonso is best known as a member of pioneering Jamaican Ska band the Skatalites. Born in Cuba to a Jamaican mother, he began playing in jazz bands in Kingston during the 1940s. He quickly became known as an arranger and soloist primarily on tenor saxophone, and he also played alto, baritone and flute. Composing instrumental versions of American rhythm and blues hits during the "blue beat" era of the late '50s, he was among the first to develop the up-tempo Jamaican Ska rhythm. Prolific producers such as Coxsone Dodd and Duke Reid relied heavily on Alphonso for session work and arrangements. A musician who could play a smooth, smoky ballad or a stomping scorcher with ease, he had the chops to match seasoned jazz soloists. With the Skatalites, Alphonso helped change the direction of Jamaican music, laying the foundation for reggae as we know it. Known as a mischievous man, he continued to play into his '60s until his death in 1998.
