Papa San's Dancehall reveals the oft-discussed link between the genre and its latter-day offspring, rap. While speaker-rattling bass pours forth, San launches into spitfire raps shot with quartz precision at speeds only measurable by radar -- all without a moment of getting hung up on even the most difficult potential tongue twisters.

Taking part of his name from legendary DJ U-Roy led many to believe that I-Roy was just an imitator, but hundred of cuts later he's proven himself as one of the freshest and most original toasters Jamaica has ever produced. In the early 1970s, I-Roy spun records and added a freely improvised commentary for King Tubby's Hi-Fi sound system, soon earning a reputation as one of the best of his day. His style retains a biting, humorous edge as he rambles though nonsensical lyrics and nursery rhymes before slamming a competitor with an icy verse and leaving Jamaica doubled over in laughter on the dancefloor. His laid-back proto-rap lyrics bring new life to old Reggae songs, invigorating a Lee Perry or Bunny "Striker" Lee rhythm with a verbal assault (often aimed at rival toaster Prince Jazzbo prior to their reconciliation). For hard Roots rhythms, penetrating squeals or rhymed storytelling, I-Roy ranks alongside greats Big Youth and U-Roy.

Before Bob Marley was the best-selling artist in reggae, Big Youth was the man, blowing up Jamaica with the classic motorcycle hit "S. 90 Skank" and one of reggae's undeniably classic albums, Screaming Target. His pre-rap, half-singing style helped promote Rastafarian beliefs with clever rhymes and a sense of humor that barrelled competing DJs over with ease. Chanting and toasting over Dub tracks of famous hits by Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown and American R&B stars made Big Youth's flashy red, gold and green capped teeth a common sight in the Jamaican scene of the '70s. It's hard to deny an exclamatory "hnnnn!" or "telya!" when it comes from one of the founding fathers of the raggamuffin style.

An exuberant singer with a voice as high, pure, and emotional as a young Jacob Miller. Mundell brought serious topics with sincere melodies over tight Roots backing by producers like Augustus Pablo. In fact, Pablo sometimes reused the same echo-laced melodic grooves for both singers. Using his alter ego Jah Levi, Mundell was also known to add a toast here and there, rhyming through the outro to a song. After putting out much of his best work with Pablo, including the classic albums Blackman's Foundation and Africa Must Be Free By 1983, Mundell went on to record with Prince Jammy and Junjo Lawes over early Dancehall rhythms. In a way, Africa Must Be Free By 1983 was as tragically coincidental as it is essential -- Mundell was shot and killed at the age of twenty-one, in 1983.

The granddaddy of DJ Toasting, U-Roy helped invent the style in the late 1960s when he removed the vocals from a Reggae track and inserted his energetic rants, screams and jives. It's not uncommon to see U-Roy dressed in a wacky costume of bright velvet cape, cane and cap as he captivates his audience with his sidesplitting rhymes. Working as a DJ for King Tubby, his interjections took on a life of their own as he skillfully interjected his ideas between the singer's choruses. When he began to lay down his rhymes on wax, his albums shot up the charts and paved the way for the future success of toasters I-Roy and Big Youth. Albums such as Dread in a Babylon remain classic and maintain a huge (if underrated) influence on everything from Dancehall to hip-hop.

Like Big Youth, Dillinger gained popularity in the 1970s based on the success of a single praising Jamaica's favorite form of transportation, the Honda motorbike. His CB 200 is a classic album, rich with humorous toasts and excellent re-workings of classics by Gregory Isaacs and others (with the vocals removed and Dillinger's characteristic proto-raps inserted). Nearly all his early backing is top notch -- how could it not be with Coxsone Dodd, Yabby You, Augustus Pablo and Lee Perry at the helm? His lyrics, however, have always carried his songs, whether getting a sound system pumping, making an audience laugh, or chanting serious cultural issues. With catchphrases such as "Jamaican collie make you jolly" and "cocaine in my brain," Dillinger had a string of hits in Jamaica before falling out of popular favor and, ironically, returning with an anti-drug message in the '80s.

Shortly after the great U-Roy began to have success with his innovative DJ Toasting style in the late 1960s, Dennis Alcapone jumped up out of nowhere to challenge his reign. His humorous lyrical style rode on top of the current Reggae hits, renewing a track for further success. All the friendly banter and improvised lyrics of hip-hop freestyle battle can be found in Alcapone's music, with a Dub-like track providing the rhythmic foundation. Under his criminally influenced name, Alcapone created a tough image with talk of guns and violence between his more light-hearted novelty songs. Many artists -- including Dillinger and I-Roy -- were influenced by Alcapone's style, as were scores of Dancehall DJ's in the '80s and '90s. In essence, Alcapone was the world's first Gangsta Rapper.

One of Jamaica's most respected artists, Chaplin mixes up styles, singing or toasting as he pleases. Fluid melodies and slick rhyming skill sets his style as an outgrowth of seminal DJ Toaster U-Roy, but more contemporary with artists like Yellowman. His lyrics can be biting and humorous or thoughtful and provocative, covering sex, spirituality and violence. Tight backing is provided by the Roots Radics, Sly and Robbie, or more digitized production and is often enhanced by the cheers and calls of a studio filled with friends. Working with U-Roy's Stur-Gav Hi-Fi sound-system in the late '80s, Chaplin became a crucial link from the earlier styles -- having tone, humor and phrasing similar to U-Roy, while paving the way for Dancehall singers to come.

Before his brutal slaying in a robbery, the peace-loving Prince Far I established a cult-like worldwide following for his two-faced style: spacey, psychedelic Dub explorations and prophetic DJ Toasting. He preferred being called a chanter rather than a toaster, and often quoted sections of the Bible in his characteristic deep, gravelly voice. There was a serious tone to his recordings, in contrast to the zany humor practiced by toasters like Dr. Alimintado and U-Roy, and the addition of ominous throbbing basslines and spiritual nyahbingi drumming further solemnized his tracks. He began his career with producers Bunny Lee, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd and Joe Gibbs, and proceeded to form his own production company, which put out hundreds of slow, effect-laden Dub classics. His voice had such a deep, authoritative sound to it that modern producers, including the Dub Syndicate, continue to sample his sermons, adding a powerful edge to their own recordings.

"The outlaw" Josey Wales is a Jamaican Dancehall veteran. He's been DJing in clubs since the late 1970s, and it shows: his unhurried singing style stretches elegantly over these dense, vibrating productions. The bass is deep, the effects as distant and watery as you could hope for, and the vocals are gruff and streetwise.

Lone Ranger was one of the artists who characterized the transition from the cultural toasting of the 1970s to the rawer Dancehall of the '80s. His tracks are consistently high in quality, due in part to the excellent production by Niney the Observer and Clement "Coxsone" Dodd.

Tappa Zukie (aka David Sinclair) had enough talent as a teenager in the early '70s to attract the attention of Patti Smith, who helped him release his first album of rhyming DJ chants and tough Roots rhythms. Decades later, Zukie is entirely established not only as a performer, but also as an extremely successful Jamaican producer who has worked with many great singers, including Beres Hammond and Horace Andy. His singing is filled with tenor toasting and a variety of rhymes extolling the virtues of ganja and Rasta life, generally laid over the best Dub-like grooves from artists including Bunny "Striker" Lee and Yabby You. Full-on Dub remixes by King Tubby and Glen Brown have helped earn Zukie the audience he deserves.
