Israel Kamakawiwo'ole is an iconic figure in Hawaii, a full-blooded Hawaiian singer who supported the independence movement and released a slew of wonderful albums before his untimely death at age 38. Kamakawiwo'ole started his career with the Makaha Sons of Ni'hau, a traditional band he formed with high school friends. Fifteen years and 10 albums later, Kamakawiwo'ole went solo, much to some fans' dismay. But he continued to find success with his mix of traditional Hawaiian music and American standards. His medley "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," off 1993's Facing Future, made it into several film soundtracks. Sadly, after a lifetime spent struggling with weight issues, Kamakawiwo'ole died in 1997.

First off, Keola Beamer just has a great name. Check it out: Keolamaikalani Breckenridge Beamer. It's gorgeous. But that's not why Beamer's famous; he's actually one of Hawaii's best-known and most prolific artists, and a member of one of Hawaii's oldest musical families. His great-grandmother was singer-songwriter Helen Desha Beamer, a renowned soprano who composed original songs in Hawaiian and was also known as a hula dancer of great skill. His mother, Winona Kapuailohia Beamer, is a known chanter, composer and author who's devoted her life to the study and preservation of Hawaiian culture. Keola himself grew up providing guitar accompaniment for his mother's dance groups before going on to study classical guitar and publish the first modern method book on Hawaiian slack-key guitar playing. He released his signature album, Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar in the Real Old Style, in 1972, and embarked on a career that's explored every realm since, from pop to traditional Hawaiian music. Perhaps his best-known work -- and one of the top-selling Hawaiian singles of all time -- was 1978's Honolulu City Lights. In recent years, Beamer has done everything from a solo guitar album to an inspired collaboration with the renowned Native American flautist R. Carlos Nakai.

You wouldn't exactly call this rising young ukulele star traditional; the guy's known for busting out Hendrix-sized riffs in concert. But Hawaii's Jake Shimabukuro is nothing if not talented: behind the showmanship lies a musician of innate ability, as 2006's acoustic Gently Weeps amply demonstrates. Born in 1976 and introduced to the ukulele when he was just four years old, Shimabukuro gained his first recognition as a member of the trio Pure Heart, which he joined in the late '90s. The trio's second album, Pure Heart 2, won them a Hoku award for Island Contemporary Album of the year, and Jake broke out from the act in 2000 to build his solo career. He became known for his liberal use of effects pedals as he endeavored to free the instrument from novelty status. He's done it. An internet video of him performing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" became an instant hit, generating millions of page-views and exposing the young musician to a broad and adoring audience.

Cecilio Rodriguez and Henry Kapono Ka'aihue first met each other in 1973, when Rodriguez was touring with Little Anthony and the Imperials as a guitarist and music director. The two discovered they had similar musical interests, and Rodriguez flew to Hawaii during a break in touring to play some gigs with Kapono. The duo sounded so great together that they began opening for Little Anthony, and before long they'd recorded a record together, their self-titled 1974 debut. Beloved for their folk-rock/Hawaiian hybrid, the group went on to release two more popular albums, Elua and Night Music, before disbanding.

When Keli'i Kaneali'i and Barry Flanagan met each other in 1983 neither could have predicted that just 10 years later they'd have released the top-selling Hawaiian album of all time and won six Na Hoko Hanohano awards for their self-titled debut. At the time, Kaneali'i, who had trained as a singer in the local church choir, was dancing hula and performing with artists like Martin Pahinui. Barry Flanagan was an aspiring guitarist whose imagination had been captured by Hawaiian slack key guitar on this serendipitous vacation. Soon after that trip, Flanagan moved to Hawaii, and the duo soon found their musical rapport transcended anything either had ever experienced. Melding traditional Hawaiian influences including oli (chant) and mele (song) with folk and ballad forms, the group's contemporary fusion sound took the islands by storm in 1993. Flanagan tailors his gentle guitar work to Kaneali'i's equally gentle singing.

These three childhood friends hit pay dirt in 1983 when their original composition "Local Boys" won a songwriting contest and quickly became a state-wide hit, staying at No. 1 in the charts for weeks. The teens quickly released a record by the same name, which featured a few originals and a bunch of cheeky covers of songs like "Stray Cat Strut" and "Rum 'n Coca-Cola." The group disbanded not long after that release, but they got back together in the 1990s and have released a string of albums.

He had just a fifth-grade education, but Charles Philip Pahinui (better known as "Gabby") ended his life a teacher. Born in the shantytowns of Honolulu in 1921, Pahinui spent his youth shining shoes, selling papers and teaching himself to play bass, steel guitar and slack-key guitar in his spare time, though he didn't read a note of music. He began gigging in Hawaii in the '30s, backing up Charles "Tiny" Brown and going on to play with giants such as Tommy Castro, George Kainapau and Alvin Isaacs. In 1960 Pahinui joined ukulele master Eddie Kamae's influential Sons of Hawaii; 12 years later, Pahinui released the first of four albums recorded with the vaunted Gabby Band, which included four of his sons and rotating members such as Sonny Chillingworth and Ry Cooder. The releases, a captivating mix of tradition and innovation, catapulted Pahinui's transcendent guitar-playing and gruff falsetto to mythic status in Hawaii. Unfortunately Pahinui's personal life took a toll: an accident on his roadwork job (which he took to support his wife and 13 children), coupled with his lifelong drinking problem, left Pahinui physically weak. He died October 13, 1980, at age 59.

The explosion of Hawaiian music can be traced back to the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco and the popular Hawaiian exhibit featuring hula dancers and musicians. Before long, the Sears catalogue was selling ukuleles and lap steel guitars, while college campuses echoed with the sounds of luaus. Sol Ho'opii rode this wave of popularity to great success in the '20s and '30s, performing many concerts throughout the U.S. and even running a talent agency that placed Hawaiians in Hollywood films. He recorded Ragtime, jazz, popular tunes, and, of course, Hawaiian standards. Whether playing sweeping crescendos, bending notes in every manner possible, or simply sliding on chords, his music was sophisticated but always fun. Hugely influential from Harlem to the Mississippi Delta to the heart of the Congo, Hoopii typifies the exotic charm of the Hawaiian guitar more than anyone else.

A Hawaiian native of mixed Portuguese, Hawaiian and Japanese descent, Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu is known as the "bad boy" of hula. He got involved with the hula movement in Hawaii, just as a new generation of dancers were reviving the traditional dance and rescuing it from its modern, romantic connotations. Ho'omalu ultimately moved to California to start his own school there, fielding competitive dance teams best known for their slightly aggressive style. In 1999, Ho'omalu finally ventured into the music-making business himself with his debut release Po'okela. Though it and subsequent releases have stirred some controversy for their unorthodox handling of traditional Hawaiian chant, Ho'omalu remains committed to his path.

Country Comfort's wonderfully lazy Country-Folk songs are as easy on the ears as any Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young album. They blend three- and four-part vocal harmonies into a laid-back acoustic country sound that's somewhat influenced by the slapback tempos and weeping inflections of the Bakersfield Sound. Country Comfort get really interesting when they're knowingly or unknowingly (it's hard to tell with these stony cats) approximating that South Pacific island-folk sound that incorporates Hawaiian Slack-Key guitar picking. This is perfect music for smiling to when you happen to be doing absolutely nothing at all.

One of the true modern masters of Hawaiian Slack-Key Guitar, Ledward Kaapana has broadened the scope of the style while helping preserve its traditions. Kaapana re-tunes the guitar to an open chord and sets his right hand on autopilot, fingerpicking in a style that would make old-time blues masters nod with approval. His sweet, pulsating falsetto adds traditional melodies -- though not without revealing outside influences -- from rock and jazz to blues and country. Frequent tours have helped spread Slack-Key Guitar to many new areas, and collaborations with diverse artists, including new age pianist George Winston, slide guitarist Sonny Landreth and bluegrass fiddler Alison Krauss, have also widened Kaapana's audience.

Emerging from the relative musical drought of the 1980s, this non-native born trio took island music in a new direction, favoring loose, pop-reggae rhythms over the neo-traditional sound that had dominated the '70s. Their music struck a chord with locals, in part because the group conceived of itself as an open, evolving entity dedicated to showcasing local talent. During the band's short life, they invited over 50 collaborators into the group, from Israel Kamakawiwa'ole and the Pahinui Brothers to other, smaller-name local talent.

John Cruz grew up in Hawaii and was gigging with his father's band by the time he was 15 years old. But the opportunities playing at tourist hotels seemed too limited for him and within a few years he'd relocated to the East Coast. Over a decade later Cruz decided to pull out of the major label race and return to Hawaii to build a folk career with less visibility but more artistic freedom. The gamble seems to have paid off; in 1997 Cruz was named Most Promising Artist at Hawaii's Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. Cruz is a sensitive singer who plays contemporary pop with occasional forays into traditional Hawaiian music.

Born into a musical family, Kapono Beamer excels as an acoustic guitar player, wedding Hawaiian styles with a New Age Acoustic feel. Most of his recordings are solo instrumental, but he occasionally adds a bass or Hawaiian nose flute.

Call him Hawaii's renaissance man; everyone else does. George Kahumoku is nothing short of amazing -- he's a champion pork producer, a lauded sculptor, educator of Hawaii's most troubled kids and a top slack-key guitarist to boot. Born in South Kona on Hawaii's Big Island, Kahumoku spent much of his youth on Oahu attending Kamehameha School. His obvious aptitude for drawing earned him scholarships to Honolulu Academy of the Arts, and he later earned a bachelor's degree from California's College of Arts and Crafts. But perhaps the most fateful day of his life came at age 10, when he got his first guitar. By his own admission, he became so obsessed with it that he played until his fingers hurt, and by age 12 he was playing with Kui Lee. Over the years, he has performed for heads of state and released countless albums, frequently funding his farming with revenues from his live shows and album sales. In 2007, Kahumoku won a Grammy for his work on the compilation Legends of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar -- Live From Maui.
