You may think "Bamboleo" and "Djobi, Djoba" are all the Gipsy Kings have to
offer, but these consummate musicians are more than two-trick ponies. With
members born to two prominent (and related) Gypsy families in southern
France, the band struggled for years as a wedding ensemble before hitting
the big time in 1988 with their eponymous release. Though justly
characterized as softening the flamenco tradition for world audiences, the
Kings are perennial favorites and destined to remain such.

Beirut interpret gypsy folk from an indie perspective. At the center of the group is young prodigy Zach Condon, who delves deep into traditional roots music from Eastern Europe and the Balkans as well as the mariachi of his native Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was first introduced to gypsy folk music through the films of director Emir Kusturica (Time of the Gypsies, Underground). Rather than trying to merely copy gypsy songs, he borrows its sounds to make emotive pop that's full of joy, sadness and longing. On the band's 2006 debut, The Gulag Orkestar, Condon takes a DIY approach where he sings and plays most of the instruments (saxophone, clarinet, mandolin, accordion and others). His very original take on regional folk brought Beirut critical acclaim, while their live shows -- complete with full brass and string sections -- drew international audiences throughout North America and Europe. On his sophomore album, The Flying Club Cup, with its decidedly French cabaret flair, Condon teamed up with multitalented violinist-producer Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy.

Jazz was forever changed when Django Reinhardt heard his first Louis Armstrong record. Reinhardt, a Belgian born Gypsy, revolutionized jazz guitar playing after losing the use of two fingers in a fire (try that at home, Joe Satriani). He invented the harmonically intense but joyous gypsy jazz style that captivated the public and influenced generations of musicians -- even Western Swing tips its hat to him. Americans like Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins and Benny Carter were lining up to play with him, but violinist Stephane Grapelli was his greatest collaborator. They fed off of each other's solos and constantly inspired one another. Towards the end of his short life, he continued to experiment by embracing Bop and the electric guitar. Stephane Grapelli and such soundtracks as Steve Martin's L.A. Story kept his sound alive through out the decades. He was the first non-American jazz innovator and he remains the greatest.

Denver's DeVotchKa started out as the house band for burlesque shows and as the touring ensemble with fetish revivalist (and one-time wife of Marilyn Manson) Dita von Teese, so it shouldn't be surprising that their sound is a bawdy, theatrical conflux of styles, which is loosely based in rock 'n' roll and includes a global buffet of folk and pop traditions. The quartet mastermind is singer, pianist and guitarist Nick Urata (who also plays bouzouki and trumpet), and includes Tom Hagerman, Jeanie Schroder and Shawn King, all capable multi-instrumentalists. Their first LP came in 2000 with SuperMelodrama, and they've released records regularly since. A big break for the band came at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in 2006, and that same year they were included on the compilation soundtrack to Little Miss Sunshine, which was nominated for a Grammy.

New York underground scenesters Ori Kaplan and Tamir Muskat have been wreaking musical mayhem for years in bands as diverse as Gogol Bordello and Firewater. But their project Balkan Beat Box may up the ante, straining Eastern European folk music through a dubby, electronica-heavy sensibility. They recorded their 2005 self-titled debut before they'd actually performed live, but crafting a dynamic stage presence wasn't hard for the consummate performers: they gained accolades on tours with acts such as Matisyahu and at festival appearances. Their 2007 release, Nu Med, drew on the band's live dynamism, simultaneously looking farther afield for influences and forming a more cohesive sound. Unofficial kings of the burgeoning gypsy punk movement, the band signals an ongoing -- and welcome -- sea-change in ideas about what constitutes hip dance music.

Is it just us, or does every hipster musician want to be a Gypsy these days? Punk bands, DJs, indie rockers, hip-hoppers. By name, Slavic Soul Party's particular angle on the Balkan boogie craze is, well, soul. If you listen to their albums, however, you might think these New York hipsters were formerly in a funk band. The truth is that the members of SSP are a bunch of jazzers with very impressive resumes. Drummer Matt Moran has supported none other than the legendary Lionel Hampton, along with a host of experimental musicians. Trombonist Curtis Hasselbring has supported Bobby Previte and Tom Harrell. Clarinetist Chris Speed has played with Myra Melford and Dave Douglas. Accordionist Ted Reichman has accompanied Uri Caine. And cornetist Rossen Zahariev has gigs with John Medeski and Abbey Lincoln on his resume. Bulgarian-born Zahariev is actually SSP's closest connection to the folk music they play. After a string of gigs in Manhattan, the group took a trip to Macedonia, which resulted in their 2002 debut, In Makedonija, on the Knitting Factory's label. Two more albums followed on Barbes Records.

An almost impossibly virtuosic group of musicians ranging in age from mid-20s to late-70s, Taraf de Haidouks are a musical phenomenon without parallel. They were a simple, unpretentious Romanian village band with chops to spare when two intrepid Belgians discovered them in 1990. They impressed the Belgians so much that they began booking concerts for the group. Taraf made a raucous performance debut at a Womad festival that bowled the audience over and cemented their reputation as an incredible live act. But don't expect electronic pyrotechnics; the group plays what they know best: wedding and christening songs, dance tunes, Medieval numbers, and traiditional Gypsy tunes. They featured prominently in the film Latcho Drom and can be found playing at village functions when not on the road.

A little bit klezmer, a little bit rock 'n' roll and a whole lot of dizzyingly tongue-tied Balkan brass (and woodwinds), this Roma (or Gypsy) band has become a continent-hopping emissary of the current Roma music revival. But their origins are a bit humbler. Once upon a time, the 12 musicians of Fanfare Ciocarlia were a loose collective of amateur musicians who spent their spare time playing weddings and baptisms in their small Romanian village of Zece Prajini. Then one day in 1996, a German sound engineer and producer named Henry Ernst showed up in the village, grouped the musicians into a band, named them Fanfare Ciocarlia
(which means the "skylark brass band" in Romanian) and took them on the road with Ernst himself as manager. Soon, Fanfare Ciocarlia was sharing its rapid-fire, rhythmically complex take on Roma folk music (which follows the musical trajectories of the Gypsy diaspora out of Romania and into the rest of the Balkans, Turkey, Spain and even a bit of India) with new fans around the world and winning the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award for Europe. In 2003, German filmmaker Raif Marschallek released Iag Bari, a documentary about the lives of Fanfare Ciocarlia members.

The Frankfurt-born Stefan Hantel -- aka Shantel -- bears much responsibility for the current boom in Balkan and Gypsy music. Shantel started out as a downtempo producer and DJ who started his own club in Frankfurt in the mid-1990s after a stint studying in Paris. And thus he would have remained, but for a fateful trip back to visit his grandparents' hometown, Czernowitz, in 2001. Czernowitz is situated in Bucovina, a region split between Romania and Ukraine; Shantel found himself profoundly affected by the region's music and culture. On his return to Germany he founded the Bucovina Club Orkestar, a group dedicated to exploring and playing with Eastern European music, and he began to helm a club night by the same name that featured Balkan and Gypsy beats. It proved a huge success, and after his work was featured in film soundtracks and commercials, Shantel took the next step in 2007 and released his first solo disc, the intoxicating, collaborator-heavy Disco Partizani. A raucous blend of electronica, rock, Gypsy music and countless other influences, the album was an underground hit that reflected a thirst for fresh sounds -- particularly of the Balkan variety.

Oh, those crazy kids. While most hipsters plumb hip-hop and rock for inspiration, a new generation is turning to Gypsy jazzsters like Django Reinhardt to return life to the moribund underground. A local San Francisco favorite whose star is beginning to rise, Rupa Marya epitomizes the trend. Marya's a natural candidate to cause this kind of hobo/Gypsy/country-folk mayhem: her multinational upbringing ensured she was multilingual and open to all that world music had to offer. Marya had been performing solo with her guitar for some years before the events of September 11, 2001, spurred her to search for alternative ways to reach people. She began composing songs in French and discovered an entirely new musical persona. She assembled a group of accordion players and instrumentalists who shared her carnival-esque vision, and Rupa and the April Fishes were born. When she's not performing for adoring urban weirdos, Marya works as a physician in San Francisco.

Formed by Fain Duenas, Benjamin Escoriza and Vincent Molina in the late 1980s, Radio Tarifa represent all that's inclusive about Spanish culture. Years of cross-pollination with North Africa, Moorish culture, Gypsy immigrants and Sephardic Jews (among many other influences) have made Spanish culture -- and Spanish music -- feverishly mongrel, and Radio Tarifa dedicated themselves to unraveling and following the country's many musical threads. While its jumping-off point is flamenco, the band has ventured as far afield as Japan for inspiration, and it has brought a cornucopia of instruments to the table -- from Middle Eastern instruments like the ney and oud to India's bansuri and the medieval cromorno. Through all its explorations, the group maintains a sense of mystery and an instrumental fire that made it one of the most sought-after live world music acts in the 1990s.

Immigrant Suns embarked on a minor world music excursion some years ago that put them on a path toward a major obsession with obscure village music. Once dissolute punks, the band members are now firmly ensconced in world folk traditions, drawing primarily from Eastern European and Gypsy music to create lovely, melancholy folk songs that retain an ironic rock 'n' roll edge. The band is not unlike a musical pack rat, collecting vivid tunes from around the world and patching them together in a sort of Indie Rock and world pastiche. Wickedly proficient musicians, Immigrant Suns are slowly making a nationwide name for themselves with their tightly constructed songs and impressively energetic live performances.

Goran Bregovic is one of the Balkan's greatest living composers, a master whose soundtrack for 1989's Time of the Gypsies turned generations of weirdos on to the manic beauty of Balkan folk. Born to a Serbian mother and Croatian father, Bregovic came of age in communist Yugoslavia where, despite his classical conservatory training, he took up playing guitar -- and with it, rock 'n' roll. At age 16 he founded the White Button, a rock band that would tour the Eastern Block for the next 15 years and make Bregovic a youth idol in the process. In 1988 filmmaker Emil Kusturica invited Bregovic to score his film Time of the Gypsies. Audiences found the score ravishing, and a productive collaboration was born that led to soundtracks for Arizona Dream and Underground, among others. Bregovic has worked with artists as diverse as Iggy Pop and Cesaria Evora for his soundtracks, dabbled in theatre and continues to give stunning live shows throughout Europe.

Before you break out your inhaler to deal with the patchouli fumes, take a minute. 17 Hippies are not really 17 hippies, they're 13 German multi-instrumentalists and singers who love gypsy music, French musette, American folk and blues...Okay, maybe that sounds just as bad. But it's really, really not. Known for their rollicking live shows, the group has evolved over the years, slowly letting the manic gypsy and Americana-influenced breakdowns mingle with classy neo-chanson.

The skinny, hyperactive Tomer Yosef has pursued more careers in his short life than most people do in a lifetime. He started out as a stand-up comedian in his native Israel, but that gig quickly evolved into radio and TV work, including on a TV show called "Platefuls." Then the feature films came along, like they do. Naturally unsatisfied with all this free-flowing success, Yosef picked up and moved to New York City to test his mettle. It stood up to the strain. After teaming up with Tamir Muskat to produce his debut album, Say Something, in 2001, Yosef recorded vocals for Balkan Beat Box's "La Bush Resistance" on their 2004 debut. He became such a favorite that the group dragged him out on the road and he quickly became an indispensible part of that pan-global mischief-making ensemble. Yosef released his second solo album, Laughing Underground, in 2008.
