An heiress born in Italy, raised in France and educated in Switzerland, Carla Bruni could've spent her life lounging around swimming pools, tropical beaches and rehab resorts. Instead, Carla Bruni became a celebrated supermodel and appeared in international tabloids linking her to everyone from Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton to Kevin Costner. But Bruni turned out of be more than your run-of-the-mill, marriage-wrecking, catwalk-strutting, modeling millionaire when she released her debut album in 2003. A quiet, folk-pop record sung in French, "Quequ'un M'a Dit" (Someone Told Me), was an instant hit, selling millions of copies across Europe and snagging a Stateside release. Instead of just being a media created cross-promotional opportunity, Carla Bruni displays real talent and a personal point of view in her songs. Her music is grounded in confessional, late 1960s and '70s singer-songwriter fare and she spins out alternately sensitive and humorously suggestive lyrics with throaty, Jeanne Moreau style vocals.

Former leader of the French Punk-Pop band Mano Negra, Manu Chao explores a wider range of musical terrain as a solo artist. Singing in Spanish, French, and English, Chao adopts the voice of the disenfranchised in his work. He's equally comfortable lamenting the "desaparecidos" (disappeared) in Spanish, confessing existential angst in French, or boasting he's the " king of bongo" in English. His main rhythmic template is reggae, and instrumentation is sparse -- guitars, bass, and keyboards with a touch of brass. Many tunes include sound montage: European news broadcasts about the Zapatistas and television and radio white noise phase in and out of the songs. Chao's home-produced work has an air of sincerity rare in the world of pop music, and his rough-hewn vocals display raw talent while he plays his guitar with a deceptive simplicity belying his talent as a songwriter. Well known and loved in Europe, Chao seems poised to conquer the Americas.

Edith Piaf still looms large as France's biggest singer. She was known as "the waif sparrow" -- an apt description for someone who projected a seemingly contradictory air of fragile toughness. Like Billie Holiday, she overcame grim, Dickensian beginnings, only to wallow in dark torch songs that somehow projected strength instead of self-pity. Besides romance, she sang about sex, death and drug addiction in a straightforward fashion that still seems shocking even in these desensitized times. Her taboo subject matter ensured that many of her songs would be banned from the radio, but even that failed to tarnish her star through out the 1930s, '40s and '50s. She cultivated songwriters and helped jump-start the careers of such fellow wounded icons as Yves Montand and Charles Aznavour.

Two sisters hailing from France, Helene and Celia Faussart deliver stirringly smooth vocal stylings atop rich, jazz-based production. Lyrics, in both French and English, are thoroughly positive and intelligent, exploring their African roots while merging Pop, Soul, R&B, and hip-hop influences. Their laid-back, soulful sound is immediately pleasing to the ear, and their silky harmonies are consistently impressive.

A singer-songwriter who pinpoints emotional moments in time with a cool, almost detached style, Keren Ann's delicate, subtle songs grow richer and cut deeper with repeated listening. Keren Ann Zeidel spent her early years in her parents' respective countries of origin -- Holland and Israel -- before settling in Paris at the age of 11. She eventually took to 1960s and '70s guitar pop and '50s vocal jazz and fell in with a group of like-minded musical artists such as Benjamin Biolay, his sister Coralie Clement and Vincent Delerm (European cohorts would include Sondre Lerche, Kings of Convenience and Belle & Sebastian.). After playing in various bands, Keren Ann signed with EMI in 2002 and collaborated with the prodigiously talented Biolay on her solo debut, La Biographie de Luka Philipsen. The album's lovely mix of bittersweet folk-pop, swirling '60s orchestral arrangements and discreet modern downtempo elements was an immediate popular and artistic hit in France. Keren Ann and co-songwriter/arranger Biolay were so productive that they followed the debut up with the sparser La Disparition (The Disappearance) the same year (!) and the album was almost as impressive as their debut. As a lark, Keren Ann recorded a set of unaccented English language demos on her own and was surprised to find that her record label wanted them released. Beefed up by Biolay's typically subtle arrangements, the set was recorded as I'm Not Going Anywhere (2004) and earned the singer an American distribution deal and rave reviews on both sides of the pond. Dividing her time between Paris and New York, Keren Ann crafted the home-recorded Nolita (2005), her first bilingual album and her first without Biolay on board. It once again touches on themes of dislocation, solitude and memory, all handled with the calm, collected and slightly mysterious manner that has become her trademark.

The single most influential French artist of the second half of the 20th century, Serge Gainsbourg still looms large, and his influence can now be heard in English speaking acts such as Beck, Nick Cave, and a multitude of indie rockers. Gainsbourg’s use of, and ironic distance from, many musical genres was decidedly post-modern before anyone even knew what that term meant. His tart, spoken word delivery, misanthropic lyrics, and employment of snappy, repetitive vamps also prefigures hip-hop in many ways. Not a handsome man by any stretch of the imagination, he ended up using this to his advantage. To the public, Gainsbourg was a modern hedonist, one who seemed to enjoy a nonstop throng of famous beauties, drink and drugs. While there was much truth to Gainsbourg's image, the classically trained musician was also a workaholic whose professionalism was respected by his peers. During the 1950s and early '60s, the Parisian performer appealed to a select Left Bank beatnik crowd, and his critically praised album sold poorly. Thankfully, Gainsbourg quickly found success as a behind-the-scenes composer, writing hits for others. Many of his finest songs were written during this period, and he was becoming known for his biting lyrics, which brimmed over with verbal puns and satiric jabs. One of Gainsbourg's many talents was that he absorbed any musical style he came into contact with. But instead of simply copying a genre, he redirected it for his own sardonic, and often, nefarious purposes. So, when Bob Dylan and the Beatles brought pop to new levels of artistic excellence, he knew that there was much he could do with the French "ye-ye" rock style. The turning point in Gainsbourg's career happened when he started writing for, and performing with, Brigitte Bardot, the most openly sensual object of desire during the sexual revolution. Suddenly, the buttoned-down jazzer quickly became a star of the Continental counterculture movement. The eternally hip "Bonnie and Clyde" stands as the greatest of the Serge/Brigitte duets, but the free-living actress actually balked at recording "Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus," Gainsbourg's celebration/subversion of physical love. So, Gainsbourg cut the track with the English model and actress Jane Birkin. The song banned it almost every country in the world but still became a huge international hit. Gainsbourg ended up snatching Birkin away from John Barry, and in 1971, he recorded his greatest album with the elegant beauty. One of the finest works of the rock era, Histoire De Melody Nelson is a concept LP involving a wealthy middle-aged man (Gainsbourg) being seduced and ultimately killed by a intoxicating Lolita (Birkin). As usual, Gainsbourg's often misanthropic lyrics for Melody Nelson are mordantly, bitterly funny, but the expansive music on the record (a mix of spacey guitars and elegant, cinematic strings) also makes it something that any music fan needs to hear - repeatedly. Not an immediate hit, Melody Nelson’s stature kept growing and along with its composer’s. Gainsbourg kept working at a dizzying pace, often gleefully scandalizing the public with an unkempt appearance and an even dirtier tongue. Whether Serge Gainsbourg's public persona was originally an act or not, his increasingly debauched lifestyle came to define him, and he died in 1991, before reaching 60. He left behind a body of work whose enormity is only matched by its excellence.

By the age of nine, Charles Aznavour knew he wanted to be a singer. Born to
performer parents who fled the Turkish massacre of Armenians in the 1920s,
Aznavour (born Chahnour Varenagh Aznaourian) dropped out of school before
age 10 and was performing in beer halls in Paris and around the countryside
as he matured. Part of a traveling duo, Aznavour began to compose songs
while his partner went out whoring. When Edith Piaf heard his work, she
paved his way: she mentored the singer, convinced him to go solo, and
brought him on her international tours. Over 600 compositions later,
Aznavour is respected as the man who brought class issues and gritty street
tales into the chanson tradition. (Chanson was a major style of French music
before rock 'n' roll.) A superb stylist and inimitable (if maudlin)
lyricist, Aznavour also acted in films by François Truffaut and Jean
Cocteau. Despite - or perhaps because of - his short stature, unusual voice
and rough-and-tumble upbringing, Aznavour is one of the symbols of French
chanson.

Francoise Hardy ranks up there with Serge Gainsbourg as the single-most influential French pop star of the rock age. While many French musical stars came from immigrant or working-class backgrounds, the well-healed Francoise Madeleine Hardy cut a strikingly different figure when she appeared on the scene in 1961. Far from Latin and emotive, the striking Miss Hardy projected an image and sound that was remote, shy and slightly injured. A major star in France for decades, Hardy was also an international fashion figure during the 1960s. A fine songwriter as well as an interpretive vocalist, she has the David Bowie/Paul Weller-like ability to change with the times without changing her unique point of view. Rare for a public performing artist, Hardy has somehow managed to continue working at a consistently high creative level while remaining a very private, family-oriented woman.

Charlotte Gainsbourg was born into show business. The daughter of the acclaimed English actress/singer/model Jane Birkin and the brilliant French songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, Charlotte started her professional career at thirteen. While she became one of France's leading movie actresses (appearing in many English-language films as well), Charlotte has a short but significant CV as a recording artist. An infamous provocateur, Serge Gainsbourg cut the duet "Lemon Incest" with his daughter when she was barely in her teens. In real life, Serge was a doting father, and he recorded an entire album for her in 1986. During the rest of the 1980s and '90s, Charlotte concentrated on acting, earning her place as a celebrated teen actress and an unconventional leading lady. Almost impossibly slender (like her parents), with unconventional features, Charlotte became a surprise sex symbol for the American indie rock set. In 2006, Gainsbourg returned to recording, cutting the album 5:55 with an impressive guitar-pop dream team -- Air, Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) and Neil Hannon (the Divine Comedy) crafted songs with the singer and producer Nigel Godrich, who has worked with Beck and Radiohead.

A guiding light of post-war bohemian France, Juliette Greco has a story to beat all -- or at least many -- stories. When she was just 16, she, her mother and her sister were arrested for working with the French resistance against Nazi occupiers. They were thrown into jail, and Greco's mother and sister were sent to an internment camp for the duration of the war. Released back onto Paris streets because she was so young, Greco had to make her own way. She discovered the bohemian, intellectual world of the Latin Quarter, where she would return after the war. She quickly became the face of the bohemian whirlwind that followed World War II -- though she had, as yet, done nothing -- appearing on magazine covers around the world. She took advantage of this newfound fame to launch a singing career, and her dense voice and gravitas-laden delivery solidified her fame. French writers and poets penned lyrics for many of her songs, and in the mid-'60s she went on to star in a television show. Starting in the '70s, Greco staged a series of comebacks. In 2003 she released an album to critical acclaim, and she followed it up with 2007's album of classic French chansons, Le Temps d'une Chanson.

Few could imagine that Jane Birkin, the long-limbed icon from the swingin' 1960s, would go on to forge a distinctive, rewarding career as an actress and interpretive singer for five decades. A beloved star in her adoptive France, Birkin kept house with the Gallic provocateur Serge Gainsbourg (after divorcing noted film composer John Barry). A trained actress, Birkin's role as the Continental symbol for a new era of sexual freedom was sealed when she appeared in the film Blow Up and then dueted with Gainsbourg on the banned international smash "Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus" ("I Love You...Me Neither"). While Birkin kept collaborating with Gainsbourg until their amicable 1980 split, she also started recording on her own, often singing songs that he wrote for her. Like her stage and film work, Birkin's recordings balance pop influences with artistic risk-taking. Birkin stepped away from music for most of the 1990s before returning to it by the end of the decade. By 2000, she was again recording frequently, often collaborating with younger fans like Feist, Benjamin Biolay and Beth Gibbons. Her daughter, Charlotte Gainsbourg, is also a popular actress and recording artist.

Camille first came to American attention as part of the bossa-novelty act La Nouvelle Vague, which reinterpreted punk and new wave classics as bossa nova songs. But the avant-garde vocalist is a platinum-selling artist in her native France, and it's not hard to hear why. Her 2002 debut Le Sac des Filles, released when she was just 24 years old, married her versatile voice -- by turns steely, jazzy and tender -- to a clutch of original compositions that took inspiration from folk, jazz and traditional French chanson. The follow-up, 2005's Le Fil, takes things further -- almost entirely a cappella. Camille showcases a stunning versatility by sustaining a concept album that could have exhausted its concept within just a few songs (her vocal drone underlies the entire album). In 2006 Camille released her first live album, Live au Trianon.

Helena Noguerra speaks five languages, sings in three, is a popular TV presenter in France, has worked as a radio DJ, has published a novel, and does more than her fair share of modeling. Belgian born, Helena is part of the French retro pop movement called "minimalist variety" (similar to the American and English indie baroque pop scene), she was a member of a number of musical groups, including the moody downtempo act Ollano, whose self-titled album enjoyed a Stateside release. Then, Helena went solo with the sly Projet: Bikini before putting out Azul under her first name. Perhaps spurred on by the international success of such sonically similar artists as Italy's Carla Bruni and Brazil's Bebel Gilberto, Azul was released in the U.S. and received a warm critical response. A lovely combination of 1960s Parisian pop, bossa nova and modern electronica, Azul was produced by chill crowd favorite Bertrand Burgalat and features Noguerra's breathy vocals and witty faux naif lyrics in Portuguese, French and English. Her subsequent album, Nee Dans La Nature, downplays the electronics and has an even more pastoral feel than her previous work. Philippe Katerine, Noguerra's musical collaborator, has released a number of worthy albums under the band name Katerine.

This idiosyncratic French singer/producer has followed her muse for years now, and it hasn't failed her. Crafting albums that take inspiration from nature and the seasons, she has composed music devoted variously to the desert, winter, the sounds of vegetables and much more. In 2004 she set to work on her second album, on which she wanted to explore wintry sounds. That album ultimately became the soundtrack to Luc Jacquet's film March of the Penguins, though the American version of the film had a different soundtrack because distributors were afraid American audiences wouldn't respond well to her avant-garde work. Simon grew up around music: her father was a sound engineer, and she studied jazz and rock before turning to electronic music. Possessed of a girlish voice and an endearingly warped worldview, she has emerged as an innovator. Her fourth album, The Flower Book, collected the best of her first three albums for international audiences.

It's all too rare that a rock band can maintain cultural relevance 20 years after its debut -- but that's just what France's Noir Desir have done. Formed in 1980 by disaffected Bordeaux youth Bertrant Cantat, the band had a desultory career at the outset: for years they were in and out of bars, playing more for their own amusement than with any kind of professional aim in sight. A 1987 EP hinted at their future mix of punk-era passion and poetry, but 1989's Sombre Heros sealed the deal: "Aux Sombres Heros de l'Amer" cracked France's Top-50, and the band entered a creative phase that saw them touring the world and releasing three well-received albums. After 1994's Colere, the group disbanded for a time. Cantat and guitarist Serge Teyssot-Gay reunited in 1997, released the enigmatically titled 666.667 Club, and played a series of dates. But the group's crowning release, 2001's Des Visages, Des Figures, left a better tase in fans' mouths, striking an enviable balance between Gallic melancholy (and melody) and rock attitude. (Manu Chao added guitar to the hit "Le Vent Nous Portera.") Though rarely explicitly leftist in their songs, the group has, through the years, become a favorite of leftists for their pro-immigrant, pro-refugee stance and their defiance of the growing right-wing movement in France.

Jeanne Moreau became every beatnik's bistro-dining dream girl after starring in such free-thinking odes to multi-partner love as Jules and Jim and Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960. Moreau, who seemed to be born with a cigarette-and-whiskey soaked voice, is also a fine cabaret singer in the style of a less mannered Edith Piaf. Her music will quickly turn any chaste bedroom into a lusty love chamber.

Steeped in both American Swing and French joie de vivre, Charles Trenet's Paris was a place for star-eyed lovers, not doomed ones. His charming, easygoing baritone stood in stark contrast to other French stars of the day. Unlike Edith Piaf, he didn't harshly over enunciate words or roll his "R's" like a mad baker strangling baguettes. His voice was a wonderful vehicle to sell his own great songs -- two of which, "Beyond the Sea" and "I Wish You Love," have become English language standards. Yves Montand and Charles Aznavour were two of his best, if more melancholy, students.

Listening to Yves Montand's laid-back yet jaunty vocal style is like sitting by a fire on a cold night. The ultimate thinking woman's continental pinup boy excelled at both dark, existential ballads and upbeat American style swingers. His music will create romantic couplings in summer, then comfort you when they end on a leaf strewn street in fall. Montand became a star with help from Edith Piaf, but he tamed rough Parisian flair with the feel of jazz and the smooth tones of his native Italy. He was also a fine actor who matured from the dashing, brooding leading man to diverse character parts. Like a beatnik Perry Como, he was tabloid fodder in America due to his endless amorous dalliances and revolutionary politics.

Maurice Chevalier knew he wasn't the greatest singer in the world, but he had such charisma and eye-twinkling charm that he became France's biggest vocalist of the 1920s and '30s. He was also a major Hollywood star and most Americans know him for his roles in Love in the Afternoon and Gigi. On both screen and in song, Chevalier's whimsical yet wise persona delighted fans worldwide for close to forty years. Who else but Maurice Chevalier could have sung "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" with such simultaneous irony and knowing innocence?

Benjamin Biolay , the reigning genius of modern French pop, has found success as a pop star, songwriter, arranger, film composer and celebrity (thanks to his marriage to movie star Chiara Mastroianni, daughter of Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni). The classically trained Biolay grew up studying the complex, experimental pop worlds of the Beatles and French icons Serge Gainsbourg and Francoise Hardy. Like Hardy, Biolay has a strong gift for melody, mood and melancholy. Like Gainsbourg, Biolay has a vast musical knowledge which he tempers with restraint, but he also has the ability -- and drive -- to be a solo star and a hardworking behind-the-scenester who writes and produces for others. While Gainsbourg's employment of different musical forms almost seemed as sarcastic and mocking as his lyrics, Biolay displays an obvious love, interest, and respect for all of genres that get mixed up in his music (which draw as much from American folk-rock and country as from French pop or the Fab Four - whom he continues to thank on the liner notes to his CDs). Benjamin Biolay first came to the music industry's attention with his collaboration with, and arrangements for, Keren Ann and his sister Coralie Clement. Finally earning a solo contract after many years of struggle, Biolay released his excellent debut album, Rose Kennedy, in 2002. A concept album, Rose Kennedy looks at early 1960s America through the cataractic eyes of the late matriarch, who went from attending dinner parties to suffering the assassination of two of her sons. Next up was Negatif, a double CD full of sometimes violent imagery surrounding a group of drifters, which included a disaffected, oddly sympathetic, American named Billy Bob. Negatif brims over with musical ideas, but they weave in and out of an acoustic guitar base and are often more felt than heard. Biolay released two albums in 2005, A L'Origine (translated: In The Beginning) is a darker, denser work than his previous outings, while Home is a light, sunny duet album with his wife, started when they noticed that they needed a good road trip CD to listen to while on vacation. He has also written film scores, songs and arrangements for such beloved French stars as Francoise Hardy, Juliette Greco and Henri Salvador.

Oh, those crazy kids. While most hipsters plumb hip-hop and rock for inspiration, a new generation is turning to Gypsy jazzsters like Django Reinhardt to return life to the moribund underground. A local San Francisco favorite whose star is beginning to rise, Rupa Marya epitomizes the trend. Marya's a natural candidate to cause this kind of hobo/Gypsy/country-folk mayhem: her multinational upbringing ensured she was multilingual and open to all that world music had to offer. Marya had been performing solo with her guitar for some years before the events of September 11, 2001, spurred her to search for alternative ways to reach people. She began composing songs in French and discovered an entirely new musical persona. She assembled a group of accordion players and instrumentalists who shared her carnival-esque vision, and Rupa and the April Fishes were born. When she's not performing for adoring urban weirdos, Marya works as a physician in San Francisco.
