You may think "Bamboleo" and "Djobi, Djoba" are all the Gipsy Kings have to
offer, but these consummate musicians are more than two-trick ponies. With
members born to two prominent (and related) Gypsy families in southern
France, the band struggled for years as a wedding ensemble before hitting
the big time in 1988 with their eponymous release. Though justly
characterized as softening the flamenco tradition for world audiences, the
Kings are perennial favorites and destined to remain such.

By softening up the edges and adding a Latin-influenced bed of tropical percussion, Liebert has turned Flamenco into a widely appealing genre that has topped the new age charts on multiple occasions. His fleet-fingered picking may not put him in the same echelon as guitarists such as Paco De Lucia, but Liebert's music is designed to please the audience with a sprinkling of exotic flavors. Songs such as "Ballad for Santana" showcase the bittersweet side of his playing, while the hit "Barcelona Nights" is as attractive as a starry night on a Mediterranean cruise. A variety of styles make up Liebert's sound: Rumba, Merengue, classical, dance, jazz and rock all help to make his music the accessibly exciting aural opiate that it is.

Ex-thrash metal bandmates turned itinerant musicians, Mexican musicians Rodrigo and Gabriela met in Mexico in the band Terra Acida. Not much later, they gave up their electric guitars, wandered through Europe and settled in Dublin. Inspired by flamenco's technical virtuosity, the duo began playing a fiery (if less mournful) version of flamenco that brings bands like Led Zeppelin and Metallica into the musical fold. The group polished their chops busking in Dublin's Grafton Street and, after gaining a devoted following there, they started seducing audiences outside Ireland. Their first album Foc was named for the Catalan word for fire (perhaps with some double entendres attached). In 2006, they teamed with producer John Leckie (Stone Roses, Radiohead) to record their self-titled international debut.

Perhaps the best-known name in Flamenco, Spaniard Paco de Lucia is an
undisputed master of the form. His nuanced guitar work is passionate and
gritty one minute, delicate and heart-breaking the next. Born to a musical
family, de Lucia learned at the feet of his father and brothers. A child
prodigy, by the age of sixteen he was leading bands and touring the world.
Like many deeply talented musicians, de Lucia was never content to simply
excel as a traditional player. He's continually broadened his musical
horizons, collaborating with artists including Chick Correa, Al Di Meola,
and John McLaughlin to the chagrin of his purist fans. Regardless of your
feelings about his musical explorations, de Lucia's traditional Flamenco
remains awe-inspiring: fast, complex, and captivating.

Formed in 2002 in Malaga, Spain, Chambao did something so obvious it was shocking nobody had tried it before: They combined downtempo and flamenco. Calling the hybrid flamenco chill, the group released its debut Endorfinas en la Mente in 2003. The album sold well, and Chambao snapped up a Premios Ondas award to boot. They followed up with 2005's Pokito a Poko, which reached an even larger audience, but the triumph was marred slightly by the departure of founding member Dani, who'd had a hand in writing most of the songs on the album. Still, the group bounced back with their most adventurous release yet, 2007's Con Otro Aire (2008 in the U.S.). The album saw lead singer and creative force Mari writing nine of the 11 tracks and collaborating with some of the guiding lights of flamenco, including both Enrique and Estrella Morente.

The eccentrically-coiffed Mariza was born in Mozambique and grew up in a Lisbon neighborhood purported to be the birthplace of the fado. Of course, no neighborhood can claim that distinction with any truthfulness, but it might now legitimately claim to be the rebirthplace of fado, considering that Mariza grew up singing there and has almost single-handedly resurrected the classic music from its untimely grave. While new fadistas abound -- including the likes of Christina Branco and Mafalda Arnauth -- it was Mariza's voice that made BBC 3 and other world music programs sit up and take notice. Her debut, 2001's Fado Em Mim, succeeded because she didn't treat the fado as a relic or as an elegant staging ground for her marvelous vocal talent. Instead she adhered to an old school of thought which says that to be any good, a singer needs to connect emotionally -- maybe even spiritually -- with the lyrics. Not to put too fine a point on it, but Mariza does: her fado is the sound of bereft sailors' wives, of loneliness and of little port towns set against squalling seas. She also experiments with other Portuguese folk forms -- she can even sing upbeat songs -- and has turned increasingly to original compositions with each successive album.

Ojos de Brujo are less a band than an anarchist artists' collective that happened to have crafted one of the best world music albums of the new millennium with 2002's Bari. But the group actually came together in 1996 as a loosely-organized conglomeration of folks who liked to jam together, including three percussionists, two flamenco guitarists, a turntablist and assorted vocalists. The group shared a love for everything from hip-hop, funk and soul to hardcore traditional flamenco and rumba. Four years after the jam sessions began, they released their self-produced debut, the well-received Vengue, and critics began to take notice of their explosive punk rock approach to flamenco. Frontman Dani Monoloco stepped aside to let vocalist Marina "Las Canillas" Abad take the reins for Bari. Abad's flamboyant style and DIY aesthetic suited the b! and perfectly, while her strong songwriting skills helped shape the band's evolving sound. By 2004 Bari</I.> had not only enraptured their hometown, Barcelona, but also garnered the group a BBC Radio 3 Award and international acclaim.

What Edith Piaf is to France or Oum Koultoum is to Egypt, Amalia Rodrigues is to Portugal. A black-clad, dark-haired diva, Rodrigues typified for the world Portugal's Fado -- or "fate" -- a native folk music that combines the melancholy of the American blues with a vocalized sense of deep and inexhaustible yearning. Rodrigues expressed Fado's themes with a precision unmatched during her more than fifty-year career. She was known and loved primarily for her voice -- gravelly, passionate, and thrilling in its scale and emotion. Technically accomplished as well as incomparably phrased, Rodrigues' voice could topple a mountain on its own volition, or call all the merchant ships and their lonely men back to port.

Born in Spain to parents who'd emigrated from Equatorial Guinea, Concha Buika grew up among the gypsies of Mallorca, absorbing the sounds and duende of flamenco. Her household was infused with music -- she grew up playing piano, guitar and bass, and her entire family played instruments and sang. As a teenager she began singing in tourist hotels, which led to stints in both London and Vegas, but it wasn't until she moved to Madrid that Buika found a community of artists that nurtured her vision. Her debut album marked her as an up-and-coming star of flamenco music; the follow-up, 2006's Mi Nina Lola, became required listening. Though her recordings are remarkable, Buika is renowned for her live shows, which feature lots of improvisation, banter and detours into jazz and soul music.

Carlos Montoya is the father of modern Flamenco. Not that he invented it: Flamenco's been around as long as gypsies have danced in Spain. But Montoya wrested the form from its traditional status as dance accompaniment and brought it to stages around the world during the first half of the twentieth century. With his strident, accomplished voice and incomparable guitar playing, Montoya's work fascinated and even entranced audiences. It's not hard to understand why -- just a taste of the rousing, distinct rhythms and melancholy melodies will whet appetites for more.

With singers like Cristina Branco and Mariza reviving Portugal's traditional music, the fado, for a younger audience, you might think the field would be too crowded for another voice. It's not. Mafalda Arnauth's delivery is as pleasing as her fellow fadistas' - and she composes as well! Arnauth's third album, 2003's "Encantamento," made it onto a lot of world music "Best of" lists.

While Cristina Branco doesn't possess the strongest voice in the crop of new fadistas who've sprung up since '90s, her dedication to the form and her willingness to take risks make her a key player in the movement. She first made a splash during the early swelling of the new fado trend: her 1999 release, Murmurios, won her France's prestigious Choc de l'Année du Monde de la Musique award and launched her on the international stage. The album marked the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with noted fado guitarist Custodio Castelo. The duo turned to Portuguese poetry for their inspiration, crediting the poet David Mourao Ferreira with inspiring both 2003's Corpo Illuminado and 2005's Sensus, and Branco even recorded a 2001 album in homage to the Dutch poet Jan Jacob Slauerhoff (who spent some time in Portugal). Branco came to fado rather late in life; for years she had sung jazz and pop, but she considered fado old-fashioned. The gift of an Amalia Rodrigues album from her grandfather and a second introduction to the singer in college finally captured her imagination. Not always comfortable with fado's melancholy extremes, Branco compensates by bringing a certain pop freshness to her sound.

Formed by Fain Duenas, Benjamin Escoriza and Vincent Molina in the late 1980s, Radio Tarifa represent all that's inclusive about Spanish culture. Years of cross-pollination with North Africa, Moorish culture, Gypsy immigrants and Sephardic Jews (among many other influences) have made Spanish culture -- and Spanish music -- feverishly mongrel, and Radio Tarifa dedicated themselves to unraveling and following the country's many musical threads. While its jumping-off point is flamenco, the band has ventured as far afield as Japan for inspiration, and it has brought a cornucopia of instruments to the table -- from Middle Eastern instruments like the ney and oud to India's bansuri and the medieval cromorno. Through all its explorations, the group maintains a sense of mystery and an instrumental fire that made it one of the most sought-after live world music acts in the 1990s.

The stream of fadistas coming out of Portugal has been steady, and it would be easy to dismiss newcomers as trendy train-hoppers. But from the first note, Ana Moura disarms potential critics. Her charm lies in her unstudied approach to the fado: she offers each vocal trill, each soaring clarion call, with a spontaneity that's rare in even the most practiced fado singers. (Perhaps her history as a rock singer has something to do with it.) Moura, who comes from a musical family and has been singing since childhood, was discovered at a Christmas party by noted fadista Maria De Fe, who invited the singer to perform at her fado house -- a small, intimate gathering place where fadistas perform without microphones to a roomful of strangers. The fado house allows singers to polish their skills, learn their repertoire and, in a sense, earn their wings. Moura did just that, and has since moved onto the European circuit, charming fado fans with her fresh approach and effortless vocal style.

One of Spain's great contemporary flamenco singers, Carmen Linares may not have had a flamenco pedigree but she had the pipes to seduce the country. Linares didn't come from a long line of musicians -- which is rare in the flamenco world -- but over the course of four decades, the singer has proven her skills as an interpreter and innovator. She began singing as a child, and as a young adult in the 1960s she graced the dance companies of both Carmen Mora and Paco Romero. In 1970, she released her debut album and found herself soon sharing the stage with other leading lights of the era, such as the great Camaron de la Isla. Over the years she's taken the stage not just as a solo performer but also as part of Cafe de Chinitas with Enrique Morente, Carmen Mora, Manzanita and Tomas de Madrid. She's also taken part in many plays and zarzuelas, thanks to her comfort as a dramatic performer.

Fiery Flamenco guitar playing and an affinity for the music of other cultures keeps Nocy Karkour's music fresh and vibrant. The songs have a Spanish flair, but should be enjoyed by fans of soothing instrumentals as well.

Jorge Monje Cruz, aka Camaron de la Isla, recorded his first album at the age of 18, a 21-year-old guitarist named Paco de Lucia by his side. It was 1969, and flamenco had found its new voice. Over the course of his career, Camaron de la Isla (camaron means "shrimp"; he was so named for his surprising blond hair) would prove his worth as a flamenco singer in the stark, classic tradition, but he also went on to lay the foundations for flamenco nuevo, exploring new instrumental combinations that had been all but taboo previously. La Leyenda Del Tiempo, recorded in 1979, proved the turning point: Camaron dropped "de la Isla" from his name, recorded the album in the countryside with a houseful of musicians, and sported a beard on the cover. (It's said that older, disgusted Gypsies returned the record in droves.) His future was secure: the musicians on that session included the 19-year-old Tomatito, who'd played with him for two years already and would accompany Camaron until his death.
