You may think "Bamboleo" and "Djobi, Djoba" are all the Gipsy Kings have to
offer, but these consummate musicians are more than two-trick ponies. With
members born to two prominent (and related) Gypsy families in southern
France, the band struggled for years as a wedding ensemble before hitting
the big time in 1988 with their eponymous release. Though justly
characterized as softening the flamenco tradition for world audiences, the
Kings are perennial favorites and destined to remain such.

Beirut interpret gypsy folk from an indie perspective. At the center of the group is young prodigy Zach Condon, who delves deep into traditional roots music from Eastern Europe and the Balkans as well as the mariachi of his native Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was first introduced to gypsy folk music through the films of director Emir Kusturica (Time of the Gypsies, Underground). Rather than trying to merely copy gypsy songs, he borrows its sounds to make emotive pop that's full of joy, sadness and longing. On the band's 2006 debut, The Gulag Orkestar, Condon takes a DIY approach where he sings and plays most of the instruments (saxophone, clarinet, mandolin, accordion and others). His very original take on regional folk brought Beirut critical acclaim, while their live shows -- complete with full brass and string sections -- drew international audiences throughout North America and Europe. On his sophomore album, The Flying Club Cup, with its decidedly French cabaret flair, Condon teamed up with multitalented violinist-producer Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy.

By softening up the edges and adding a Latin-influenced bed of tropical percussion, Liebert has turned Flamenco into a widely appealing genre that has topped the new age charts on multiple occasions. His fleet-fingered picking may not put him in the same echelon as guitarists such as Paco De Lucia, but Liebert's music is designed to please the audience with a sprinkling of exotic flavors. Songs such as "Ballad for Santana" showcase the bittersweet side of his playing, while the hit "Barcelona Nights" is as attractive as a starry night on a Mediterranean cruise. A variety of styles make up Liebert's sound: Rumba, Merengue, classical, dance, jazz and rock all help to make his music the accessibly exciting aural opiate that it is.

An heiress born in Italy, raised in France and educated in Switzerland, Carla Bruni could've spent her life lounging around swimming pools, tropical beaches and rehab resorts. Instead, Carla Bruni became a celebrated supermodel and appeared in international tabloids linking her to everyone from Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton to Kevin Costner. But Bruni turned out of be more than your run-of-the-mill, marriage-wrecking, catwalk-strutting, modeling millionaire when she released her debut album in 2003. A quiet, folk-pop record sung in French, "Quequ'un M'a Dit" (Someone Told Me), was an instant hit, selling millions of copies across Europe and snagging a Stateside release. Instead of just being a media created cross-promotional opportunity, Carla Bruni displays real talent and a personal point of view in her songs. Her music is grounded in confessional, late 1960s and '70s singer-songwriter fare and she spins out alternately sensitive and humorously suggestive lyrics with throaty, Jeanne Moreau style vocals.

Former leader of the French Punk-Pop band Mano Negra, Manu Chao explores a wider range of musical terrain as a solo artist. Singing in Spanish, French, and English, Chao adopts the voice of the disenfranchised in his work. He's equally comfortable lamenting the "desaparecidos" (disappeared) in Spanish, confessing existential angst in French, or boasting he's the " king of bongo" in English. His main rhythmic template is reggae, and instrumentation is sparse -- guitars, bass, and keyboards with a touch of brass. Many tunes include sound montage: European news broadcasts about the Zapatistas and television and radio white noise phase in and out of the songs. Chao's home-produced work has an air of sincerity rare in the world of pop music, and his rough-hewn vocals display raw talent while he plays his guitar with a deceptive simplicity belying his talent as a songwriter. Well known and loved in Europe, Chao seems poised to conquer the Americas.

Jazz was forever changed when Django Reinhardt heard his first Louis Armstrong record. Reinhardt, a Belgian born Gypsy, revolutionized jazz guitar playing after losing the use of two fingers in a fire (try that at home, Joe Satriani). He invented the harmonically intense but joyous gypsy jazz style that captivated the public and influenced generations of musicians -- even Western Swing tips its hat to him. Americans like Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins and Benny Carter were lining up to play with him, but violinist Stephane Grapelli was his greatest collaborator. They fed off of each other's solos and constantly inspired one another. Towards the end of his short life, he continued to experiment by embracing Bop and the electric guitar. Stephane Grapelli and such soundtracks as Steve Martin's L.A. Story kept his sound alive through out the decades. He was the first non-American jazz innovator and he remains the greatest.

Edith Piaf still looms large as France's biggest singer. She was known as "the waif sparrow" -- an apt description for someone who projected a seemingly contradictory air of fragile toughness. Like Billie Holiday, she overcame grim, Dickensian beginnings, only to wallow in dark torch songs that somehow projected strength instead of self-pity. Besides romance, she sang about sex, death and drug addiction in a straightforward fashion that still seems shocking even in these desensitized times. Her taboo subject matter ensured that many of her songs would be banned from the radio, but even that failed to tarnish her star through out the 1930s, '40s and '50s. She cultivated songwriters and helped jump-start the careers of such fellow wounded icons as Yves Montand and Charles Aznavour.

Ramazzotti is an Italian-born singer who's found success on the Latin pop circuit. In the early '90s his albums were going platinum across Europe, and they were being translated into Spanish for that market. BMG International took notice of his crossover appeal and signed Ramazzotti. Ramazzotti first appeared on the Latin Pop charts in 1994 with Todos Historias, but it wasn't until 1997's Eros that he really established himself. Stylistically he veers between pop-friendly balladry and a more rock-oriented style.

Ex-thrash metal bandmates turned itinerant musicians, Mexican musicians Rodrigo and Gabriela met in Mexico in the band Terra Acida. Not much later, they gave up their electric guitars, wandered through Europe and settled in Dublin. Inspired by flamenco's technical virtuosity, the duo began playing a fiery (if less mournful) version of flamenco that brings bands like Led Zeppelin and Metallica into the musical fold. The group polished their chops busking in Dublin's Grafton Street and, after gaining a devoted following there, they started seducing audiences outside Ireland. Their first album Foc was named for the Catalan word for fire (perhaps with some double entendres attached). In 2006, they teamed with producer John Leckie (Stone Roses, Radiohead) to record their self-titled international debut.

Despite their gruesome name, these Spanish pop-rockers don't seem to have too many morbid interests -- and their music won't chop your ear off. Formed by a bunch of university friends, the group used to play covers of alternative bands for fun until singer Amaia Montero joined. The addition of her dulcet voice galvanized the group to record a demo, and three albums later (in 2003) they began climbing Latin pop charts with the song "Puedes Cantar Conmigo." The group became a fixture on the charts for several years, but in 2008, Montero decided to leave the band to pursue a solo career; Leire Martinez, former leader of Factor X, took over singing duties the same year.

A singer-songwriter who pinpoints emotional moments in time with a cool, almost detached style, Keren Ann's delicate, subtle songs grow richer and cut deeper with repeated listening. Keren Ann Zeidel spent her early years in her parents' respective countries of origin -- Holland and Israel -- before settling in Paris at the age of 11. She eventually took to 1960s and '70s guitar pop and '50s vocal jazz and fell in with a group of like-minded musical artists such as Benjamin Biolay, his sister Coralie Clement and Vincent Delerm (European cohorts would include Sondre Lerche, Kings of Convenience and Belle & Sebastian.). After playing in various bands, Keren Ann signed with EMI in 2002 and collaborated with the prodigiously talented Biolay on her solo debut, La Biographie de Luka Philipsen. The album's lovely mix of bittersweet folk-pop, swirling '60s orchestral arrangements and discreet modern downtempo elements was an immediate popular and artistic hit in France. Keren Ann and co-songwriter/arranger Biolay were so productive that they followed the debut up with the sparser La Disparition (The Disappearance) the same year (!) and the album was almost as impressive as their debut. As a lark, Keren Ann recorded a set of unaccented English language demos on her own and was surprised to find that her record label wanted them released. Beefed up by Biolay's typically subtle arrangements, the set was recorded as I'm Not Going Anywhere (2004) and earned the singer an American distribution deal and rave reviews on both sides of the pond. Dividing her time between Paris and New York, Keren Ann crafted the home-recorded Nolita (2005), her first bilingual album and her first without Biolay on board. It once again touches on themes of dislocation, solitude and memory, all handled with the calm, collected and slightly mysterious manner that has become her trademark.

Denver's DeVotchKa started out as the house band for burlesque shows and as the touring ensemble with fetish revivalist (and one-time wife of Marilyn Manson) Dita von Teese, so it shouldn't be surprising that their sound is a bawdy, theatrical conflux of styles, which is loosely based in rock 'n' roll and includes a global buffet of folk and pop traditions. The quartet mastermind is singer, pianist and guitarist Nick Urata (who also plays bouzouki and trumpet), and includes Tom Hagerman, Jeanie Schroder and Shawn King, all capable multi-instrumentalists. Their first LP came in 2000 with SuperMelodrama, and they've released records regularly since. A big break for the band came at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in 2006, and that same year they were included on the compilation soundtrack to Little Miss Sunshine, which was nominated for a Grammy.

With members originating as far afield as Moscow, the Ukraine and Israel, Gogol Bordello could only have come together in a city a large and diverse as New York. Singer/lyricist Eugene Hutz came to the United States in 1996, after spending seven years trekking through Eastern Europe refugee camps after the Chernobyl meltdown. Over the years, Hutz met the eclectic group of talented musicians that make up Gogol Bordello, and together they have been putting on a unique show that, at times, resembles a three-ring circus! As Hutz puts it, "We create an insane party atmosphere to deliver messages of social and political commentary." With their first recorded effort, Voi-La Intruder, fiddles, accordions and an assortment of other instruments wage war against one another for ascendency. And as crazy as it sounds, the disc actually went a long way toward capturing the joie de vivre of the band's live shows. In 2002, Gogol Bordello released their sophomore album, Multi Kontra Culti vs. Irony, which seamlessly blended sounds as diverse as punk, gypsy, folk and cabaret. Darker in tone than its predecessor, Multi Kontra Culti vs. Irony added a dash of theatrics to the mix, creating what Russians call "cruel romance" music. Hutz, a skilled DJ who routinely blends elements of Balkan, Indian and Arab music with a heady dose of dancehall and electronic beats, drew upon this experience for 2004's Gogol Bordello vs. Tamir Muskat. The album's crazed, party atmosphere and ferocious beats was a slight left turn for the band, who chose a more "traditional" sound for the following year's East Infection. Never a band to rest on its laurels, Gogol Bordello also released Gypsy Punk: Underdog World Strike in the same year for the uber punk label, SideOneDummy. Gypsy Punk… was produced by noisemeister Steve Albini, and furthered Hutz's sonic cocktail of foot-stomping, traditional gypsy music with chaotic, anthemic punk. That summer, Gogol Bordello treated punks of all ages to their frenetic, sweaty live show when they toured as part of the Vans' Warped Tour.

Perhaps the best-known name in Flamenco, Spaniard Paco de Lucia is an
undisputed master of the form. His nuanced guitar work is passionate and
gritty one minute, delicate and heart-breaking the next. Born to a musical
family, de Lucia learned at the feet of his father and brothers. A child
prodigy, by the age of sixteen he was leading bands and touring the world.
Like many deeply talented musicians, de Lucia was never content to simply
excel as a traditional player. He's continually broadened his musical
horizons, collaborating with artists including Chick Correa, Al Di Meola,
and John McLaughlin to the chagrin of his purist fans. Regardless of your
feelings about his musical explorations, de Lucia's traditional Flamenco
remains awe-inspiring: fast, complex, and captivating.

Most aspiring musicians would do anything for just one shot at the big time. Robyn's had at least four. The Swedish singer got her first break in 1995 when she was still a teenager, landing a record contract and debut album that topped the charts in her native country when she was just 16. By 1996, she could add international smash single to her credits after the dance-pop tune "Do You Know (What It Takes)" made the Top 10 in the U.S. When the relationship with her American label turned sour, she regrouped with the Swedish-only release Don't Stop the Music in 2002. More label disputes ensued, so Robyn took yet another tack, collaborating with Swedish experimental synth-pop outfit the Knife. Guess what? Her label didn't like that either. Still, the cat-like Robyn bounced back with life number four, forming her own label (Konichiwa) in 2005 and releasing her self-titled fourth album. With Robyn, the dedicated pop star finally got her due, a decade after she started, in the form of multiple Swedish Grammies, several international hit singles and the respect of the U.S. music press (even before the album was released stateside in 2008).

Hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, September (real name Petra Marklund) is the dance-pop singer behind hits like "Cry for You" and "Until I Die." A precocious talent, Marklund got her start in the industry early. At only 12 years old she was already recording in studios; at 18 she released her first single, "La La La (Never Give It Up)," which made it to No. 8 in Sweden's pop charts. Working alongside the songwriting and production trio of Jonas von der Burg, Niclas von der Burg and Anoo Bhagavan, September went on to release multiple singles and three albums between 2004 and 2007. A frequent visitor to various European pop charts, she represented her home country in 2007's Sopot International Song Festival, against artists like Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Thierry Amiel.

Nana Mouskouri was born on the Greek island of Crete in 1934, just before the country would be devestated by civil and world war. By the end of the century she had become one of the biggest singing stars in Europe, known internationally thanks to her polyglot singing ability and gentle soprano voice. Mouskouri grew up listening to every kind of music she could, including American jazz and Greek folk. That breadth of taste would serve her well; she is a fearless musical interpreter who's brought an easy pop flavor to almost anything she touched, be it French Pop or her flacid rendering of "Guantanamera." She's recorded albums in every major European language and performed everything from traditional Greek music to boleros and even classical. Beloved for her mild singing style, Mouskouri was also (fittingly) elected to represent Greece in the European Parliament in 1994.

By the age of nine, Charles Aznavour knew he wanted to be a singer. Born to
performer parents who fled the Turkish massacre of Armenians in the 1920s,
Aznavour (born Chahnour Varenagh Aznaourian) dropped out of school before
age 10 and was performing in beer halls in Paris and around the countryside
as he matured. Part of a traveling duo, Aznavour began to compose songs
while his partner went out whoring. When Edith Piaf heard his work, she
paved his way: she mentored the singer, convinced him to go solo, and
brought him on her international tours. Over 600 compositions later,
Aznavour is respected as the man who brought class issues and gritty street
tales into the chanson tradition. (Chanson was a major style of French music
before rock 'n' roll.) A superb stylist and inimitable (if maudlin)
lyricist, Aznavour also acted in films by François Truffaut and Jean
Cocteau. Despite - or perhaps because of - his short stature, unusual voice
and rough-and-tumble upbringing, Aznavour is one of the symbols of French
chanson.

Charlotte Gainsbourg was born into show business. The daughter of the acclaimed English actress/singer/model Jane Birkin and the brilliant French songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, Charlotte started her professional career at thirteen. While she became one of France's leading movie actresses (appearing in many English-language films as well), Charlotte has a short but significant CV as a recording artist. An infamous provocateur, Serge Gainsbourg cut the duet "Lemon Incest" with his daughter when she was barely in her teens. In real life, Serge was a doting father, and he recorded an entire album for her in 1986. During the rest of the 1980s and '90s, Charlotte concentrated on acting, earning her place as a celebrated teen actress and an unconventional leading lady. Almost impossibly slender (like her parents), with unconventional features, Charlotte became a surprise sex symbol for the American indie rock set. In 2006, Gainsbourg returned to recording, cutting the album 5:55 with an impressive guitar-pop dream team -- Air, Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) and Neil Hannon (the Divine Comedy) crafted songs with the singer and producer Nigel Godrich, who has worked with Beck and Radiohead.

Heroes del Silencio formed in Zaragoza, Spain in the mid-1980s. Singer-songwriter Enrique Bunbury joined just as the group was gaining fame, and was part of their initial 1987 EP Heroe De Leyenda. The release got such kudos at Madrid's San Isidro Festival that the subsequent full-length El Mar No Cesa quickly went platinum, as did the next several releases. The group lasted into the mid-'90s, transitioning from their early new wave sound to a slightly harder-edged style before Bunbury went solo.

Helena Noguerra speaks five languages, sings in three, is a popular TV presenter in France, has worked as a radio DJ, has published a novel, and does more than her fair share of modeling. Belgian born, Helena is part of the French retro pop movement called "minimalist variety" (similar to the American and English indie baroque pop scene), she was a member of a number of musical groups, including the moody downtempo act Ollano, whose self-titled album enjoyed a Stateside release. Then, Helena went solo with the sly Projet: Bikini before putting out Azul under her first name. Perhaps spurred on by the international success of such sonically similar artists as Italy's Carla Bruni and Brazil's Bebel Gilberto, Azul was released in the U.S. and received a warm critical response. A lovely combination of 1960s Parisian pop, bossa nova and modern electronica, Azul was produced by chill crowd favorite Bertrand Burgalat and features Noguerra's breathy vocals and witty faux naif lyrics in Portuguese, French and English. Her subsequent album, Nee Dans La Nature, downplays the electronics and has an even more pastoral feel than her previous work. Philippe Katerine, Noguerra's musical collaborator, has released a number of worthy albums under the band name Katerine.

The single most influential French artist of the second half of the 20th century, Serge Gainsbourg still looms large, and his influence can now be heard in English speaking acts such as Beck, Nick Cave, and a multitude of indie rockers. Gainsbourg’s use of, and ironic distance from, many musical genres was decidedly post-modern before anyone even knew what that term meant. His tart, spoken word delivery, misanthropic lyrics, and employment of snappy, repetitive vamps also prefigures hip-hop in many ways. Not a handsome man by any stretch of the imagination, he ended up using this to his advantage. To the public, Gainsbourg was a modern hedonist, one who seemed to enjoy a nonstop throng of famous beauties, drink and drugs. While there was much truth to Gainsbourg's image, the classically trained musician was also a workaholic whose professionalism was respected by his peers. During the 1950s and early '60s, the Parisian performer appealed to a select Left Bank beatnik crowd, and his critically praised album sold poorly. Thankfully, Gainsbourg quickly found success as a behind-the-scenes composer, writing hits for others. Many of his finest songs were written during this period, and he was becoming known for his biting lyrics, which brimmed over with verbal puns and satiric jabs. One of Gainsbourg's many talents was that he absorbed any musical style he came into contact with. But instead of simply copying a genre, he redirected it for his own sardonic, and often, nefarious purposes. So, when Bob Dylan and the Beatles brought pop to new levels of artistic excellence, he knew that there was much he could do with the French "ye-ye" rock style. The turning point in Gainsbourg's career happened when he started writing for, and performing with, Brigitte Bardot, the most openly sensual object of desire during the sexual revolution. Suddenly, the buttoned-down jazzer quickly became a star of the Continental counterculture movement. The eternally hip "Bonnie and Clyde" stands as the greatest of the Serge/Brigitte duets, but the free-living actress actually balked at recording "Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus," Gainsbourg's celebration/subversion of physical love. So, Gainsbourg cut the track with the English model and actress Jane Birkin. The song banned it almost every country in the world but still became a huge international hit. Gainsbourg ended up snatching Birkin away from John Barry, and in 1971, he recorded his greatest album with the elegant beauty. One of the finest works of the rock era, Histoire De Melody Nelson is a concept LP involving a wealthy middle-aged man (Gainsbourg) being seduced and ultimately killed by a intoxicating Lolita (Birkin). As usual, Gainsbourg's often misanthropic lyrics for Melody Nelson are mordantly, bitterly funny, but the expansive music on the record (a mix of spacey guitars and elegant, cinematic strings) also makes it something that any music fan needs to hear - repeatedly. Not an immediate hit, Melody Nelson’s stature kept growing and along with its composer’s. Gainsbourg kept working at a dizzying pace, often gleefully scandalizing the public with an unkempt appearance and an even dirtier tongue. Whether Serge Gainsbourg's public persona was originally an act or not, his increasingly debauched lifestyle came to define him, and he died in 1991, before reaching 60. He left behind a body of work whose enormity is only matched by its excellence.

Zucchero is the Italian incarnation of the classic rock star, and he has recorded blues, Gospel and Soul music with the likes of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Sheila E. Versed in Italian folk music and graced with a naturally sonorous, smoke-tinged voice, he sings both slow-tempo ballads and upbeat rockers in Italian and English.

New York underground scenesters Ori Kaplan and Tamir Muskat have been wreaking musical mayhem for years in bands as diverse as Gogol Bordello and Firewater. But their project Balkan Beat Box may up the ante, straining Eastern European folk music through a dubby, electronica-heavy sensibility. They recorded their 2005 self-titled debut before they'd actually performed live, but crafting a dynamic stage presence wasn't hard for the consummate performers: they gained accolades on tours with acts such as Matisyahu and at festival appearances. Their 2007 release, Nu Med, drew on the band's live dynamism, simultaneously looking farther afield for influences and forming a more cohesive sound. Unofficial kings of the burgeoning gypsy punk movement, the band signals an ongoing -- and welcome -- sea-change in ideas about what constitutes hip dance music.

Paris Combo manage to hit the bull's-eye with both classic French Pop and American Swing. Fronted by Belle du Berry, whose sexy vocals replace continental cool with sophisticated heat, the band's tight musicianship is much brighter then what usually passes muster on American Swing Revival recordings. If you want to experience La Dolce Vita in Paris instead of Rome, they'll deliver the sweet life directly to you.

This young Italian from the outskirts of Rome went to college for engineering and communications but he was clearly just biding his time until a record deal showed up. After two years of grooming by industry executives and EMI, Ferro released 2001's Rosso Relativo in Italy to huge success. Two years later the album was repackaged (and re-recorded in Spanish) and released to the lucrative Latin American market as Rojo Relativo. "Alucinado" was a huge hit, and 111 Ciento Once was released in 2004, spawing the hit "Tardes Negras."

Francoise Hardy ranks up there with Serge Gainsbourg as the single-most influential French pop star of the rock age. While many French musical stars came from immigrant or working-class backgrounds, the well-healed Francoise Madeleine Hardy cut a strikingly different figure when she appeared on the scene in 1961. Far from Latin and emotive, the striking Miss Hardy projected an image and sound that was remote, shy and slightly injured. A major star in France for decades, Hardy was also an international fashion figure during the 1960s. A fine songwriter as well as an interpretive vocalist, she has the David Bowie/Paul Weller-like ability to change with the times without changing her unique point of view. Rare for a public performing artist, Hardy has somehow managed to continue working at a consistently high creative level while remaining a very private, family-oriented woman.

Formed in 2002 in Malaga, Spain, Chambao did something so obvious it was shocking nobody had tried it before: They combined downtempo and flamenco. Calling the hybrid flamenco chill, the group released its debut Endorfinas en la Mente in 2003. The album sold well, and Chambao snapped up a Premios Ondas award to boot. They followed up with 2005's Pokito a Poko, which reached an even larger audience, but the triumph was marred slightly by the departure of founding member Dani, who'd had a hand in writing most of the songs on the album. Still, the group bounced back with their most adventurous release yet, 2007's Con Otro Aire (2008 in the U.S.). The album saw lead singer and creative force Mari writing nine of the 11 tracks and collaborating with some of the guiding lights of flamenco, including both Enrique and Estrella Morente.

The eccentrically-coiffed Mariza was born in Mozambique and grew up in a Lisbon neighborhood purported to be the birthplace of the fado. Of course, no neighborhood can claim that distinction with any truthfulness, but it might now legitimately claim to be the rebirthplace of fado, considering that Mariza grew up singing there and has almost single-handedly resurrected the classic music from its untimely grave. While new fadistas abound -- including the likes of Christina Branco and Mafalda Arnauth -- it was Mariza's voice that made BBC 3 and other world music programs sit up and take notice. Her debut, 2001's Fado Em Mim, succeeded because she didn't treat the fado as a relic or as an elegant staging ground for her marvelous vocal talent. Instead she adhered to an old school of thought which says that to be any good, a singer needs to connect emotionally -- maybe even spiritually -- with the lyrics. Not to put too fine a point on it, but Mariza does: her fado is the sound of bereft sailors' wives, of loneliness and of little port towns set against squalling seas. She also experiments with other Portuguese folk forms -- she can even sing upbeat songs -- and has turned increasingly to original compositions with each successive album.

Ojos de Brujo are less a band than an anarchist artists' collective that happened to have crafted one of the best world music albums of the new millennium with 2002's Bari. But the group actually came together in 1996 as a loosely-organized conglomeration of folks who liked to jam together, including three percussionists, two flamenco guitarists, a turntablist and assorted vocalists. The group shared a love for everything from hip-hop, funk and soul to hardcore traditional flamenco and rumba. Four years after the jam sessions began, they released their self-produced debut, the well-received Vengue, and critics began to take notice of their explosive punk rock approach to flamenco. Frontman Dani Monoloco stepped aside to let vocalist Marina "Las Canillas" Abad take the reins for Bari. Abad's flamboyant style and DIY aesthetic suited the b! and perfectly, while her strong songwriting skills helped shape the band's evolving sound. By 2004 Bari</I.> had not only enraptured their hometown, Barcelona, but also garnered the group a BBC Radio 3 Award and international acclaim.
