Gaelic Storm were catapulted to a fame -- of a sort -- when they made a
cameo as the band performing during the steerage party in James Cameron's
epic film, Titanic. The scene was symbolic in some ways: the group
has always spanned two continents, founded by native Cork man Patrick Murphy
and New York's Steve Wehmeyer -- both of whom play an astounding array of
instruments that includes bodhran, piano, accordion, digeridoo, spoons and
harmonica. With the addition of Englishman Steve Twigger, the band first hit
its stride in live performances in Southern California, where they
discovered that audiences responded instinctively to their rollicking mix of
Celtic folk and rock 'n' roll. (It can't hurt that Murphy's singing voice
bears more than a passing resemblance to that of the famous, groundbreaking
Irish singer Christy Moore.) Picking up an assortment of members over the
years, the group has now swollen to six members and has seen several albums
soar to the Top-5 of the Billboard World charts.

Sinead O'Connor was one of the key artists of the 1990s, but oddly, considering her abundant talent and charisma, she stood out more for style than substance. O'Connor had plenty of attitude, a shaved head, and an abundant willingness to speak out on controversial topics. Alongside straightforward rocker Joan Jett, O'Connor helped pave the way for everyone from Courtney Love to P.J. Harvey and the entire Lilith Fair generation. Her debut album was a mainstream alternative radio hit, but the superior follow-up I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, fueled by the Prince-penned single "Nothing Compares 2 U," deservedly became one of the hottest albums of the early '90s. While she was busy getting plenty of tabloid press for badly thought-out political statements, her subsequent albums stopped selling and O'Connor became gun-shy after her respectable 1994 release Universal Mother. But no one could expect such a towering talent to remain quiet for long, and O'Connor enjoyed a new burst of creative energy with 2000's Faith In Courage and her album of Irish traditionals, 2002's Sean-Nos Nua. She retired again in 2002, but roared back to action in 2005, teaming up with famed reggae producers Sly and Robbie for a daring, beautifully executed album of classic reggae covers.

The masculine answer to Celtic Woman, Celtic Thunder are a multimedia experience for Celto-philes who value visuals as much as audio. The vocal group is the brainchild of producer Sharon Browne (with an assist from Irish composer Phil Coulter) and features five singers ranging in age from 14 to 39. With a repertoire that spans from Irish ballads to contemporary pop -- such as "Desperado" and "Nights in White Satin" -- they perform a set that resembles ancient stone pathways in a bid to evoke a mystical Celtic past. They're frequently joined by a full band, bagpipes and, when required, monks. The group came to light in August 2007 with the taping of their debut Dublin performance, which quickly became a staple on PBS stations around the United States, tapping into America's obsession with its Irish roots. The group grew into an international phenomenon, and it undertook a tour of the U.S. in late 2008.

Three sisters and one brother blend traditional Irish music with contemporary pop/rock stylings for charming, utterly listenable results.
Clannad are ground zero for the hybrid of Celtic Folk, new age synths and pop music that gets piped into seaside gift shops and relaxation seminars. But just because they helped create a genre as starched and bland as a boiled spud doesn't mean that their own music is lifeless. Clannad have been around for thirty years now and have created barrel-loads of beautiful traditional Celtic Folk music, as well as shimmering pop songs and dreamy clover-scapes. The band is actually a family affair -- like a Gaelic, straight-haired, Caucasoid version of the Jackson 5, with Janet and LaToya thrown in for spice. The related Brennan and Duggan broods got together to celebrate their shared heritage. Enya, the beautiful multi-tracked enchantress, was onboard for a short while during the early 1980s when the band was experiencing a surge in popularity in Europe. Since that time, the changes in their sound have more to do with trends in production and technology than artistic shifts. The Corrs have also stolen some of their feathery thunder by bringing even more pop and rock into their mix. Nevertheless, playing a Clannad CD remains a key part of any ponytailed man's plan to seduce his yoga instructor or herbologist.

The Proclaimers are proud of their Scottish identity in the same way that Billy Bragg was proud of his non-bespectacled Cockney one -- that is, they don't bother to hide it. This brother act couples gorgeous, brogue-filled, Everly Brothers style harmonies with snappy energy. Always engaging, whether on a country tune or an upbeat rocker, they remained critical darlings until the film Benny and June turned "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" into a Top-10 hit single five years after it was released on swell Sunshine on Leith (1988).

While perhaps not as well known as Enya or Sinead O'Connor, Mary Black is
one of Ireland's most significant female singers. Born into an intensely
musical family -- her father was a fiddler from Rathlein Island and her
mother a singer -- Black was learning Irish folk at the knee of her older
brother Shay by the time she was eight years old. She came to take much joy
in singing, and fortunately for her she was blessed with a remarkably pure,
if not overly powerful, voice. After releasing one solo album in the early
1980s, the offbeat traditional Irish band DeDannan asked Black to join. Join
she did, touring with the band for three years (leaving her children in the
care of her husband Joe). But the call of her solo career proved strong, and
she ultimately returned to it in 1986. After a string of gold albums in
Ireland, 1987's By the Time It Gets Dark went multiplatinum and the
chart-topping, triple-platinum No Frontiers (1989) followed quickly
on its heels. Though she's a traditional singer of considerable talent,
Black has never limited her career to Celtic folk, taking on pop and other
influences as they suited her.

Bloom, born Barry Moore in Ireland, is the brother of famed Irish folk singer Christy Moore. He recorded a handful of records under his own name in Ireland before coming to America to forge an identity outside the shadow of his more famous brother. He changed his name and developed an open-tuned, heavily processed acoustic guitar sound that was almost orchestrally full, freeing him from the constraints of a backup band. He scored a deal after developing a devoted following, which grew with the release of a series of critically acclaimed records. One of his more interesting experiments is an acoustic treatment of rapper LL Cool J's "I Need Love," done as an impassioned, straight-faced love song.

Sweet-voiced singer Christy Moore is the godfather of Irish pop and Celtic Folk, and older brother to folk phenom Luka Bloom. Besides his prolific solo career, Moore has been behind two of Ireland's most influential and best-known bands: Planxty and Moving Hearts. In the 1970s, Planxty helped bring Celtic Folk into the 20th century, revving up traditional songs with impeccable, high-energy musicianship. Moving Hearts took the revolution one step further as one of the first Irish folk bands to "plug in." The resulting sound would change Irish popular music forever. At its best, Moore's solo work is tender and charming; his tribute to a now-defunct Irish music festival in "Lisdoonvarna" is probably the next best thing to having been there. A true giant - but a gentle giant - of Irish music.

Exceedingly popular in their native Canada and among Celtic music fans worldwide, this group of siblings was formerly known as the Rankin Family. Hailing from Cape Breton Island, they have deep roots in the musical traditions of the region. From the start, however, they've tempered their Celtic roots with healthy doses of pop and country music, going as far as recording in Nashville with Mary Chapin Carpenter's band and using outside songwriters such as fellow Canadian superstar Bruce Cockburn. All of this has helped them sell more than six million records since their start more than a decade ago.
