After leaving her siblings' outfit Clannad, Enya (born Eithne Ni Bhraonain) enjoyed a short stint of television and film score appearances before embarking on a solo career. Produced by Nicky Ryan to accentuate her angelic, atmospheric vocal style, lush, swelling synths and minimal rhythms accompany ever so delicately as her voice crests upon lush, tearful soundscapes with astounding grace. Not necessarily pop, nor decidedly its antithesis, Enya's intensely melodic, ethereal music is downright chilling.

How many Irishwomen does it take to make a Celtic Woman? Five, apparently: four singers (Chloe Agnew, Orla Fallon, Lynn Hilary and Lisa Kelly) and one violinist (Mairead Nesbitt). The vocal group threatened to surpass even Michael "Lord of the Dance" Flatley in crossover Celtic-ness in 2005, after their debut album proved that songs like Enya's "Orinoco Flow" can yield their secrets to other singers. Supported by twinkling, harp-heavy instrumentation, the group brings a fey edge to Irish classics.

Sinead O'Connor was one of the key artists of the 1990s, but oddly, considering her abundant talent and charisma, she stood out more for style than substance. O'Connor had plenty of attitude, a shaved head, and an abundant willingness to speak out on controversial topics. Alongside straightforward rocker Joan Jett, O'Connor helped pave the way for everyone from Courtney Love to P.J. Harvey and the entire Lilith Fair generation. Her debut album was a mainstream alternative radio hit, but the superior follow-up I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, fueled by the Prince-penned single "Nothing Compares 2 U," deservedly became one of the hottest albums of the early '90s. While she was busy getting plenty of tabloid press for badly thought-out political statements, her subsequent albums stopped selling and O'Connor became gun-shy after her respectable 1994 release Universal Mother. But no one could expect such a towering talent to remain quiet for long, and O'Connor enjoyed a new burst of creative energy with 2000's Faith In Courage and her album of Irish traditionals, 2002's Sean-Nos Nua. She retired again in 2002, but roared back to action in 2005, teaming up with famed reggae producers Sly and Robbie for a daring, beautifully executed album of classic reggae covers.

Lamprey-mouthed vocalist and legendary boozer Shane MacGowan first cut his teeth in punk band the Nips before packing up his DIY bags and moving on to Celtic rock with the Pogues. It was a daring move that has produced some of the most original-sounding music of the post-punk era. Red Roses for Me heralded the arrival of a band brashly defying convention simply by adhering to tradition. As a permeable ensemble of a half-dozen or more players, they were able to incorporate traditional instruments hitherto unheard of in rock 'n' roll. Mandolins, concertina, tin whistle, the dulcimer and the bodhran gave the Pogues their distinctly Irish sound, and in Shane MacGowan the band possessed an ace writer fitting squarely into the Irish literary heritage. Songs like "The Old Main Drag," "A Pair of Brown Eyes" and "Hell's Ditch" indicate that, had he been so inclined, MacGowan might have written books to put on the shelf with Flann O'Brien, Brendan Behan and the Joyce of Finnegan's Wake. Not many bands could wear the hoary epaulets of the label "National Treasure" and pull it off, but the Pogues were such a band.

Clannad are ground zero for the hybrid of Celtic Folk, new age synths and pop music that gets piped into seaside gift shops and relaxation seminars. But just because they helped create a genre as starched and bland as a boiled spud doesn't mean that their own music is lifeless. Clannad have been around for thirty years now and have created barrel-loads of beautiful traditional Celtic Folk music, as well as shimmering pop songs and dreamy clover-scapes. The band is actually a family affair -- like a Gaelic, straight-haired, Caucasoid version of the Jackson 5, with Janet and LaToya thrown in for spice. The related Brennan and Duggan broods got together to celebrate their shared heritage. Enya, the beautiful multi-tracked enchantress, was onboard for a short while during the early 1980s when the band was experiencing a surge in popularity in Europe. Since that time, the changes in their sound have more to do with trends in production and technology than artistic shifts. The Corrs have also stolen some of their feathery thunder by bringing even more pop and rock into their mix. Nevertheless, playing a Clannad CD remains a key part of any ponytailed man's plan to seduce his yoga instructor or herbologist.

The masculine answer to Celtic Woman, Celtic Thunder are a multimedia experience for Celto-philes who value visuals as much as audio. The vocal group is the brainchild of producer Sharon Browne (with an assist from Irish composer Phil Coulter) and features five singers ranging in age from 14 to 39. With a repertoire that spans from Irish ballads to contemporary pop -- such as "Desperado" and "Nights in White Satin" -- they perform a set that resembles ancient stone pathways in a bid to evoke a mystical Celtic past. They're frequently joined by a full band, bagpipes and, when required, monks. The group came to light in August 2007 with the taping of their debut Dublin performance, which quickly became a staple on PBS stations around the United States, tapping into America's obsession with its Irish roots. The group grew into an international phenomenon, and it undertook a tour of the U.S. in late 2008.

Gaelic Storm were catapulted to a fame -- of a sort -- when they made a
cameo as the band performing during the steerage party in James Cameron's
epic film, Titanic. The scene was symbolic in some ways: the group
has always spanned two continents, founded by native Cork man Patrick Murphy
and New York's Steve Wehmeyer -- both of whom play an astounding array of
instruments that includes bodhran, piano, accordion, digeridoo, spoons and
harmonica. With the addition of Englishman Steve Twigger, the band first hit
its stride in live performances in Southern California, where they
discovered that audiences responded instinctively to their rollicking mix of
Celtic folk and rock 'n' roll. (It can't hurt that Murphy's singing voice
bears more than a passing resemblance to that of the famous, groundbreaking
Irish singer Christy Moore.) Picking up an assortment of members over the
years, the group has now swollen to six members and has seen several albums
soar to the Top-5 of the Billboard World charts.

After the demise of the Dubliners, the Chieftains became the warhorses of traditional Irish music. The group formed in Dublin in 1962, when uilleann pipe player Paddy Moloney gathered a bevy of traditional players to record a one-off traditional album, The Chieftains 1. It seemed like that would be all the world would hear from the musicians, but in 1967 Moloney re-formed the group, enlisting fiddler Sean Keane, among others. Two years later they released The Chieftains 2, but it wasn't until 1975 that the band could quit their day jobs and become full-time musicians. With an ear for the eclectic, the group began to experiment with Celtic music in the diaspora, collaborating with musicians from Cape Breton, Brittany, Galicia and the American South. Harpist Derek Bell had joined in 1973, and in 1979 they added flautist Matt Molloy (of Bothy Band and Planxty fame), two additions that greatly expanded the group's musical reach. Over the years the Chieftains have become unofficial (and official) musical ambassadors for Ireland, traveling the world to perform and collaborating with giants like Van Morrison, Mick Jagger and Sinead O'Connor, among many others.

The Proclaimers are proud of their Scottish identity in the same way that Billy Bragg was proud of his non-bespectacled Cockney one -- that is, they don't bother to hide it. This brother act couples gorgeous, brogue-filled, Everly Brothers style harmonies with snappy energy. Always engaging, whether on a country tune or an upbeat rocker, they remained critical darlings until the film Benny and June turned "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" into a Top-10 hit single five years after it was released on swell Sunshine on Leith (1988).

Except for their trademark Aran sweaters, you might have mistaken the Clancy Brothers for a bunch of dock-working thugs -- until they raised their voices, that is. This clan of singing Irish emigres helped catalyze the Greenwich Village folk scene and eventually became one of the most popular singing groups in the world. Enlisting the services of teetotaler friend Tommy Makem, the Clancys inaugurated the Ballad Revival of the 1950s, a trend that rescued from obscurity the old songs of Ireland at a time when England was doing everything in its power to quash Irish nationalism. The movement made it respectable again for folks to identify with working-class songs and their Irish heritage. Intentionally or not, the Clancy Brothers reawakened people's awareness of class issues and social injustice and helped precipitate the political folk movement of the '60s. Of course, the group was never uni-dimensionally political; they're most fondly remembered for their rowdy drinking songs, after all. Not content to merely sing their odes to John Barleycorn (songs like "Nancy Whiskey" and "The Parting Glass"), they assailed them with booming voices that brim over with excitement. Listening to the Clancy Brothers feels like having a run-in with that big, back-slapping uncle who's always happy to see ya'.

Canadian Loreena McKennitt has always played with one eye on her harp and one eye squinting towards Ireland. Her early albums served as platforms for her delicate harp playing and equally delicate vocals, but she's undertaken ambitious concept albums on more recent efforts that travel the globe stylistically and traverse centuries lyrically. The Book of Secrets (1997) seemed patterned after the travels of the roving monks described in Thomas Cahill's How the Irish Saved the World. Standout tracks such as "The Mummer's Dance" and "Dante's Prayer" explore traditional music forms from around the European continent, while other songs entirely erase the lines dividing occidental and oriental music. Literate, adventurous and truly gifted, McKennitt is a rare performer whose music adamantly refuses to recognize stylistic and geographic boundaries. If it's strong tranquilizer you'd have in the ear, stick with Enya. McKennitt is a modern-day bard who whispers ancient wisdoms and dazzles with tales of travel.

One of the biggest selling Irish artists in history, songwriter and pianist Phil Coulter left Ireland to make his name in London during the swinging '60s, writing a number of pop hits and playing with the likes of Van Morrison, the Rolling Stones and Tom Jones. Later he made big bucks writing for the Bay City Rollers; but ultimately he returned to his roots, recording sentimental Irish tunes with lush orchestral arrangements.

Hard-drinking, scruffy-bearded wastrels from the wrong side of the tracks, the Dubliners first performed as the Ronnie Drew Folk Group in the bars of Dublin, coalescing into the Dubliners at O'Donoghue's Pub. Following the success of the raucous "Seven Drunken Nights" in 1967 (duly banned by Ireland's ever-conservative RTE Radio), the band embarked on a never-ending world tour spreading their boozy gospel. Having recorded their most influential songs in the 1960s, the Dubliners disappeared from the limelight for nearly two decades before returning to the fray in the 1987 with a fearsome rendition of "The Irish Rover" with kindred spirits the Pogues, included on the album Celebration. Further collaborations with Irish luminaries the Hothouse Flowers ("The Rose") and the Pogues once more ("Mountain Dew") served as a reminder of the Dubliners' vast influence on subsequent generations of Irish musicians. They continue to this day despite innumerable line-up changes.

While perhaps not as well known as Enya or Sinead O'Connor, Mary Black is
one of Ireland's most significant female singers. Born into an intensely
musical family -- her father was a fiddler from Rathlein Island and her
mother a singer -- Black was learning Irish folk at the knee of her older
brother Shay by the time she was eight years old. She came to take much joy
in singing, and fortunately for her she was blessed with a remarkably pure,
if not overly powerful, voice. After releasing one solo album in the early
1980s, the offbeat traditional Irish band DeDannan asked Black to join. Join
she did, touring with the band for three years (leaving her children in the
care of her husband Joe). But the call of her solo career proved strong, and
she ultimately returned to it in 1986. After a string of gold albums in
Ireland, 1987's By the Time It Gets Dark went multiplatinum and the
chart-topping, triple-platinum No Frontiers (1989) followed quickly
on its heels. Though she's a traditional singer of considerable talent,
Black has never limited her career to Celtic folk, taking on pop and other
influences as they suited her.

Considered by many to be the best traditional Irish band in the world, Altan were originally a duo consisting of Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh on vocals and fiddle, and Frankie Kennedy on flute. The two (with help from a young Enya on their early work) plunged themselves into the world of jigs, reels, ballads, waltzes and other traditional Irish and English folk, singing pure melodies in Gaelic and writing stunning instrumentals. The group has grown to include a much larger core, incorporating acoustic guitars, accordion, twin fiddle, bouzouki and more -- resulting in a rich, vibrant conglomeration of dynamic sonorities. After releasing a string of masterpieces (including Harvest Storm and Island Angel), tragedy struck when Kennedy died of cancer. The band lives on, releasing excellent music under Ni Mhaonaigh's ongoing direction.

Restless as the seafaring nomads whose chanties and airs they borrowed from, the Waterboys called no one style of music their own, but roamed the oceans and passage of time for sources of inspiration. Mike Scott and his ragtag troupe of aging folkies, pub buskers, and salty punks crafted with an artisan's care scrappy Folk-Rock that resonated with romantic, vaguely new age themes. Fisherman's Blues (1988) -- containing interpretations of Van Morrison, the Beatles, and W.B. Yeats -- captures them at their most adventurous. On the title track, Scott's tearful whelps and scotch-scorched vocals reach a fevered emotional pitch that infects the entire album. At a time when rock 'n' roll had brought to the brink of extinction instruments like the mandolin, bouzouki, and accordion, the Waterboys repopulated music with them, giving their songs a timeless quality. The results were never less than majestic.

Hothouse Flowers' passionate fusion of Celtic-tinged Roots rock and Gospel music sets the Irish group apart from the vast majority of their contemporaries -- with the possible exception of Van Morrison, with whom they share much in common. Bono signed Hothouse Flowers to U2's Mother label in the mid-'80s after seeing the band perform on a late night television show. They recorded a single that did fairly well, but it was the celebrity push that directly led to the Flowers' subsequent deal with PolyGram. With a strong out-of-the-gate start, Hothouse Flowers' debut album People went to No.1 in Ireland and peaked at No. 2 in Britain. Subsequent releases produced similar results in most countries bar America, where, despite their considerable talent and cult following, Hothouse Flowers failed to break through. The band was quiet during most of the late 1990s and has recently started touring again. In 2004, the band made a spectacular return to form when they released their seventh album, Into Your Heart.

Cynics would say Canada's Irish Rovers peddled a sort of bastardized,
caricatured Irish folk to unsuspecting North American audiences. But Irish
bands like the Clancy Brothers were no less theatrical; perhaps a bett! er
explanation is simply that the Irish Rovers were homesick Irishmen who
found themselves playing up stereotypes to willing fans while keeping their
sentimental favorites alive. Whatever the case, the group shot to (brief)
prominence in the mid-1960s when they sold out the famous San Francisco
venue the Purple Onion for weeks on end. While their fame didn't last, the
band has: they've been through multiple lineup changes through the years
but continue to tour and record.

The prevailing interest in traditional Celtic music helped bolster MacMaster from a musical prodigy to a worldwide sensation. As well as playing fiddle with Classical orchestras, she has also written and recorded soft rock songs with her own band. An equally talented singer and musician, MacMaster's blending of Celtic influences and Top-40-friendly pop songs has proven to be a potent combination.

Bloom, born Barry Moore in Ireland, is the brother of famed Irish folk singer Christy Moore. He recorded a handful of records under his own name in Ireland before coming to America to forge an identity outside the shadow of his more famous brother. He changed his name and developed an open-tuned, heavily processed acoustic guitar sound that was almost orchestrally full, freeing him from the constraints of a backup band. He scored a deal after developing a devoted following, which grew with the release of a series of critically acclaimed records. One of his more interesting experiments is an acoustic treatment of rapper LL Cool J's "I Need Love," done as an impassioned, straight-faced love song.

Bagpipe blaring and fiddle flying, the Battlefield Band have been a pillar of Scottish traditional music for more than 30 years. Prolific recording artists, the quartet have changed their lineup over the years but have always maintained strong voices and group harmonies. They sing classic folk tales from highlands and lowlands.

Sweet-voiced singer Christy Moore is the godfather of Irish pop and Celtic Folk, and older brother to folk phenom Luka Bloom. Besides his prolific solo career, Moore has been behind two of Ireland's most influential and best-known bands: Planxty and Moving Hearts. In the 1970s, Planxty helped bring Celtic Folk into the 20th century, revving up traditional songs with impeccable, high-energy musicianship. Moving Hearts took the revolution one step further as one of the first Irish folk bands to "plug in." The resulting sound would change Irish popular music forever. At its best, Moore's solo work is tender and charming; his tribute to a now-defunct Irish music festival in "Lisdoonvarna" is probably the next best thing to having been there. A true giant - but a gentle giant - of Irish music.

John McDermott is an accidental superstar - at least that's how the story goes. McDermott was born in Scotland but emigrated with his parents to Canada in 1965. He led a relatively unremarkable life until early 1990s, when he made an amateur recording of himself singing Celtic favorites for his parents' anniversary party. According to legend, the CD made it into the hands of EMI executive and within months McDermott was signed to a multi-album contract. He's recorded everything from sentimental standards to war veteran tribute albums. McDermott has also teamed up with fellow tenors Ronan Tynan and Anthony Kearns to create the Irish Tenors, a crossover operatic singing group that's the Celtic answer to portly Italian brother group the Three Tenors.

In the '60s, fingerpicking was all the rage among folkie guitarists; the playing style renders notes clean and distinct -- just the opposite of the strum-it-to-death approach usually taken by neophyte guitarists. It's the difference between an eyedropper and a garden hose, musically rendered. The two men primarily responsible for the rise of fingerpicking in the U.K. were John Renbourn and Bert Jansch. The two were actually roommates for a brief time in the mid-1960s, putting together in their spare time a collection of original material interspersed with subdued traditional ballads and anglicized blues. Still influential today, the recordings were released in 1966 as Bert and John. The album inaugurated one of the most important collaborations in modern folk, as the two then went on to form Pentangle. An important British Folk band astounding in its range of reference, Pentangle brought together Celtic Folk, blues, antique ballads, modern jazz and Continental guitar styles. Since his days with Pentangle, Renbourn has remained a tireless explorer of new directions in guitar-based folk, incorporating new influences from Indian music to medieval carols.
