Since just about every human on the planet seems to own Legend, it's hardly necessary to describe the King of Reggae's music. Marley's style developed early under the tutelage of Lee Perry, who influenced Marley's phrasing. His voice graced early Ska, Rock Steady and Reggae recordings, but many believe that the time he spent backed by fellow Wailers Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston was the most artistically satisfying of his career. The varied personal styles that the trio brought to recording sessions and live performances represented the culmination of Jamaican trio-style singing. Marley's soulful vocal leads were supported by Tosh's deep, almost angry diatribes, while Livingston (who later changed his name to Bunny Wailer) provided balancing high harmonies. The group added an R&B influence to slowed-down Ska, using vocal interplay similar to that of U.S. Doo-Wop and Soul acts. When backed by the Upsetters, one of Jamaica's hottest studio bands, the Wailers combined a tight vocal unit with exceptional rhythmic underpinning. That combination was responsible for Marley's first international smash Catch a Fire, as well as the brilliant, Lee Perry-produced African Herbsman. Later, Marley utilized female singers in the I-Threes when Peter and Bunny left to pursue solo careers. It took Eric Clapton's chart-topping success with "I Shot the Sheriff" to introduce Marley's music to a wide audience in the U.S., but today his sound is a bona fide international phenomenon. Biting lyrics coated in sugary-sweet melodies made Marley a genuine political force who delivered his messages in upbeat, rhythmic vehicles. His prophetic wails still ring true; his expansive music remains powerful and virtuosic. We're left wondering why we had to lose the Caribbean negus at such a young age.

Latin pop diva Shakira has achieved phenomenal success and become a genuine pop icon. Born to humble beginnings in Barranquilla on Colombia's Caribbean coast, she left for the capital city of Bogota as an aspiring model at age 13. Ironically it was her music that garnered attention. Singing and writing lyrics since she was 8, her first album for Sony was released when she was 14. Although sales were meager, the album helped launch her career as a soap opera actress. Then came Pies Descalzados (1995), an album which showcased her bold, flexible voice and yielded a string of huge hits. Her mixture of rock ballads and Dance Pop (with an occasional tropical touch) is filtered through her image as a talented, beautiful and headstrong young woman. Departing from the traditional image of Latin American women, Shakira's music and persona aroused controversy when her multiplatinum records put her in the spotlight. Following in the footsteps of Selena, she represents a bold new Latina who will be neither obsequious nor silent. As Shakira has matured, so has her music, as demonstrated in songs such as the Arabic-inflected "Ojos Asi" as well as in her live performances.

After leaving her siblings' outfit Clannad, Enya (born Eithne Ni Bhraonain) enjoyed a short stint of television and film score appearances before embarking on a solo career. Produced by Nicky Ryan to accentuate her angelic, atmospheric vocal style, lush, swelling synths and minimal rhythms accompany ever so delicately as her voice crests upon lush, tearful soundscapes with astounding grace. Not necessarily pop, nor decidedly its antithesis, Enya's intensely melodic, ethereal music is downright chilling.

Carlos Santana has been mixing blues, Afro-Cuban jazz, rock, fusion, and psychedelic guitar elements into his brand of Latin rock since the 1960s. Many of today's musicians hold Santana responsible for picking up where Ritchie Valens left off, bringing Latin sounds to the forefront of popular music. Shortly after Santana's start playing music halls of San Francisco in the liquid light-show heyday (mid-'60s), his eclectic band found itself at the first Woodstock festival, playing one of its most memorable performances. The band has undergone many lineup changes since, but Carlos Santana continues to radiate global soul, playing new material as well as the hits that brought him acclaim back in the day of the longhairs.

With a potent mix of crunked-out production, sex-fiend lyrics and Hispanic pride, his debut LP M.I.A.M.I. (Money Is A Major Issue) catapulted the young emcee into rap stardom, especially in the South and among Latinos. With releases like El Mariel and The Boatlift, he has continued making songs with insightful social commentary while proving his ability to move the masses with his club anthems.

One of the newest generation of celebrities to generate buzz before their first single is even released, Sean Kingston (born Kisean Anderson) got his first break on MySpace. The 17-year-old was visiting Dr. Dre's page one day and saw that American producer J.R. Rotem had started a new label and was looking to sign artists. Several instances of online harassment later, Kinsgston had secured an audition with Rotem, who found himself impressed by Kingston's croon and his heartfelt, G-rated lyrics. He signed him on the spot. Kingston's bicultural upbringing informs his sound: born in Miami and raised both there and in Jamaica, the singer is equally versed in mainstream rap and dancehall, though his first hit owes a debt, amazingly, to doo-wop. But Kingston, for all his fresh-faced appearance, isn't without connections: his grandfather was Jamaican producer Jack Ruby. Despite his pedigree, Kingston has seen his share of difficulties as well: his mother and sister were thrown in jail for tax evasion when he was just 14-years-old, leaving the boy temporarily homeless.

As the son of Julio Iglesias -- perhaps the most famous singer in the Spanish-speaking world -- Enrique was born to stardom. He recorded his demo tape under a false name, not wanting to be seen as the son of Julio, but the relationship was ultimately a factor in the blockbuster success of his first record in 1995. Possessing a strong natural voice that is well suited to both romantic and dance material, he sings confidently in Spanish and English. His first monster hit, the power ballad "Experiencia Religiosa," topped the charts in every Spanish-speaking country. Teaming up with top writers and producers, he continued with eleven No. 1 hits in a row on the Billboard Latin charts. His song "Bailamos" began his crossover career, and soon after he was performing at the Superbowl. The ultimate marker of success is that three Spanish soap operas are named after his songs. Although his father is still revered, Enrique's popularity has now eclipsed his father's, as any Latina teenager can testify.

As frontman for the British progressive-rock band Genesis [see entry], Peter Gabriel cowrote, sang, and acted out elaborate story songs, wearing masks and costumes. Since leaving Genesis in 1975 to begin a solo career, Gabriel has revealed a new array of guises, including pop star with a distinctively mellifluous voice, soundtrack composer, social activist, and world-music aficionado as well as benefactor, music-video innovator, and multimedia artist.

Gabriel's first solo album was an eponymously titled effort, as were his next three. (The idea, he once explained, was to suggest issues, as one would for a magazine.) The first and second LPs drew attention for the respective singles "Solsbury Hill" and "D.I.Y." The third, produced by Steve Lillywhite, yielded "Games Without Frontiers" (Number 48, 1980) and showed Gabriel striving to break rock conventions: For instance, drummers Jerry Marotta and Phil Collins (Gabriel's former Genesis bandmate) were prohibited from using cymbals.

Gabriel's fourth album, subtitled Security (1982), was the singer's first to go gold; it also gave him his first Top 40 single with "Shock the Monkey." That same year, Gabriel financed the World of Music, Arts, and Dance (WOMAD) Festival, designed to bring African and Far Eastern music - which had increasingly influenced his work — to Western ears. To offset the festival's debt, he staged a Genesis reunion concert and released a WOMAD album, featuring cuts by himself, Robert Fripp (the producer of his second LP), and Pete Townshend alongside ethnic-music sources. The WOMAD Festival became an annual event, and the organization eventually spawned an education program and record label.

In 1984 Gabriel was tapped to score Alan Parker's film Birdy; the singer consequently won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes. In 1985 he founded Real World Inc., aimed at developing cross-cultural projects in technology and the arts. The following year, he started the United Nations University for Peace, intended to fund an international human-rights computer network, and set up Real World Studios, a recording complex near Bath, England, where artists including Van Morrison and New Order have since worked. (A Real World record label, dedicated to exposing ethnic music from around the world, was established in 1989.)

_The year 1986 also saw Gabriel's commercial breakthrough. So, coproduced with Daniel Lanois, reached Number Two and produced the funky, chart-topping "Sledgehammer," which Gabriel accompanied with a groundbreaking video full of provocative live-action-animation images. A video for "Big Time" (Number Eight, 1987) followed suit. Other singles included "In Your Eyes" (Number 26, 1986) and "Don't Give Up" (Number 72, 1987), a duet with Kate Bush.

Gabriel joined U2, Sting, and others for a 1986 tour on behalf of Amnesty International. A 1988 Amnesty tour followed, with Gabriel, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Tracy Chapman, and Youssou N'Dour (who had sung on So). Also in 1988, Gabriel performed "Biko," his tribute to South African civil-rights martyr Steven Biko (from 1980's Peter Gabriel) at a Nelson Mandela tribute at London's Wembley Stadium, and composed music for Martin Scorsese's controversial adaptation of The Last Temptation of Christ. The 1989 soundtrack album won a Grammy for Best New Age Performance.

Gabriel's next studio album, 1992's Us, was inspired by his mid-80s divorce from childhood sweetheart Jill Moore and the breakup of a subsequent relationship with actress Rosanna Arquette. The album reached Number Two and generated "Digging in the Dirt" (Number 52, 1992) and "Steam" (Number 32, 1992). In 1993 Gabriel enlisted an international roster including Sinéad O'Connor, Crowded House, James, and P.M. Dawn for a WOMAD tour. The 1994 double CD Secret World Live was recorded during two Italian concerts in 1993. Also in 1994 the musician added another branch to his corporation, called Real World Multi Media, to use technology as another creative outlet. The division published its first CD-ROM, Xplora 1, an interactive look into Gabriel's various projects, that year. A follow-up, Eve, featuring Gabriel's music and the work of several visual artists, was released in 1997. The musician helped develop an attraction for the London Millennium Dome, which opened on New Year's Day 2000; he also issued a soundtrack, OVO, for the attraction, which included a drawn storybook.

After 2001, Gabriel continued to work on soundtracks. In 2002, he wrote the soundtrack to the Australian film Rabbit-Proof Fence as well as releasing the critically unsuccessful Up, his first solo album in 10 years. A remastered edition of Us was also issued in 2002. Hit, a compilation of Gabriel's greatest, was released in 2003. Gabriel continued to record songs for a plethora of films, most recently "Down to Earth" for Disney's Wall-E.

How many Irishwomen does it take to make a Celtic Woman? Five, apparently: four singers (Chloe Agnew, Orla Fallon, Lynn Hilary and Lisa Kelly) and one violinist (Mairead Nesbitt). The vocal group threatened to surpass even Michael "Lord of the Dance" Flatley in crossover Celtic-ness in 2005, after their debut album proved that songs like Enya's "Orinoco Flow" can yield their secrets to other singers. Supported by twinkling, harp-heavy instrumentation, the group brings a fey edge to Irish classics.

Considered the king of the rancheros, Fernandez's romantic, nostalgic sound typifies old Mexico. He wields exquisite control over his voice, surging from intimacy to drama at the drop of a hat. Fernandez is heir to singers like Jorge Negrete and Pedro Infante, but his story is also bound up with the rise of television. Born in Jalisco in 1940, Fernandez had his first brush with musical success when he won a Guadalajara singing contest. But it wasn't until he won a small role on a television show called La Calandria Musical that his career really got moving. He began singing for many of the major mariachi groups of the 1950s, and famously gave an impassioned concert in Mexico City just after learning his father had died.

Formed in a dole line in their native Birmingham, England, UB40 have become to reggae what Kenny G is to jazz, only without all the support from jazz-loving soccer moms. By digging up classic Soul hits (Al Green's "Here I Am [Come And Take Me]"), unearthing love ballads (Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love"), and rifling through pop gems (Neil Diamond's "Red Red Wine"), they've been able to sustain mainstream success with a string of reggae-fied hits. But a true love for classic '70s roots reggae has always nestled behind the group's mainstream appeal, sparking two follow-ups to 1983's original Labour of Love release, inspiring collaborations with Jamaican artists and infusing their 2006 release Who You Fighting For?.

So unique was Stan Getz's saxophone sound that his solo on "Early Autumn" catapulted him to stardom in 1948 (his tone was so unique that he was nicknamed "The Sound" and even Coltrane wished he could play like him). Getz was at first influenced by Lester Young (and he was deservedly famous for the way he played ballads) but he quickly fell under bop's spell and his disarming versatility that enabled him to shine in Swing, Cool, or Avant-Garde jazz contexts. Just as his popularity was beginning to wane in the early 1960s, he scored massive hits with his Bossa Nova work, introducing the sultry South American-derived rhythms to a global audience. Getz remained on top for the rest of his life.

Aventura are bachata's first boy band. This renegade group of Dominican American teenagers toured relentlessly through the 1990s, trying to gain acceptance for their unconventional mix of bachata, hip-hop and R&B. By the time 2002's We Broke the Rules was released, it was clear that their transgressions would set new standards. "Obsession" became a huge hit, and the group continued to experiment with bachata's boundaries. Bilingual Love and Hate (2007) found them moving into urban-music territory, incorporating elements of hip-hop and R&B into a mix of tropical styles. Released in 2006 and 2007, respectively, K.O.B. Live and Kings of Bachata - Sold Out at Madison Square Garden showcased their growing stage prowess as well as their burgeoning Rolodex, thanks to cameos from Don Omar and Hector Acosta. Reggaeton beats and appearances by Akon, Wyclef Jean and Ludacris expanded Aventura's range on 2009's The Last, but they never abandoned their bachata roots.

If Ricky Martin is the Latin crossover star that wears tight leather and does Pepsi ads, Marc Anthony is the one wearing the black silk and smoking a cigarette. Anthony established himself in the '90s as a contemporary Salsa superstar, and more recently, his English crossover recordings have expanded his overall audience. Universally respected for his clear and emotional singing style, he's always brought integrity to his music whether singing a shamelessly revealing romantic ballad or cutting loose with some hot Salsa. He's a "NuyoRican" (Puerto Rican from New York City) whose English vocals display no accent. Now visible as a film actor as well, Anthony exudes a cool downtown New York persona, and his mix of contemporary dance ballads and salsa works easily in his hands.

If Wisin y Yandel's "Rakata" wasn't replaying itself endlessly in your head at the end of 2005, it's probably because you weren't listening to the right radio station. For any lover of the genre, that spitfire track off Luny Tunes' Mas Flow compilation helped permanently prop open the door that Daddy Yankee's "Gasolina" had kicked open in 2004. Reggaeton had become a mainstay on Latin pop radio and in some way Wisin and Yandel's story mimicked the genre's rise. Born and raised in Cayey, Puerto Rico, Llandel Veguilla and Juan Luis Morera took up rapping early; by 1998 they'd released their debut No Fear with a string of compilations and releases to follow. After a greatest hits release, the duo called it quits. But fate intervened -- or their solo careers didn't take off as planned -- and they reunited for 2004's La Mission IV en el ano 2004. Their timing was good -- Universal was launching its reggaeton imprint and the duo was quickly folded under Machete Music's wings.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole is an iconic figure in Hawaii, a full-blooded Hawaiian singer who supported the independence movement and released a slew of wonderful albums before his untimely death at age 38. Kamakawiwo'ole started his career with the Makaha Sons of Ni'hau, a traditional band he formed with high school friends. Fifteen years and 10 albums later, Kamakawiwo'ole went solo, much to some fans' dismay. But he continued to find success with his mix of traditional Hawaiian music and American standards. His medley "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," off 1993's Facing Future, made it into several film soundtracks. Sadly, after a lifetime spent struggling with weight issues, Kamakawiwo'ole died in 1997.

You may think "Bamboleo" and "Djobi, Djoba" are all the Gipsy Kings have to

members born to two prominent (and related) Gypsy families in southern

the big time in 1988 with their eponymous release. Though justly
characterized as softening the flamenco tradition for world audiences, the

Hip-hop has always taken inspiration from Dancehall -- thanks to New York's
sizeable Jamaican population -- and collaborations between the two
communities have been increasing. But it took Dancehall newcomer Sean Paul
to finally close the gap. After a series of collaborations with such artists
as Jay-Z and DMX, Paul's long-awaited sophomore album Dutty Rock
burned up clubs all over the world with its stellar combination of grit,
glitz and girl-talk. Culturally mongrel, Paul is something of an anomaly in
the Dancehall world: he's the well-educated son of a Portuguese-Jamaican
father and a Chinese-Jamaican mother (a well-known Jamaican artist). He was
even a top athlete before abandoning water polo for the microphone. We're
glad he did. It may not be the deepest lyricism you'll ever encounter, but
Paul's mic control is masterful, and as track-swollen as it was, "Dutty Rock"
did indeed rock from start to finish. Paul followed up Dutty Rock with The Trinity in 2005.

You might think of Julio Iglesias as a love-ballad crooner for the old folks
- and indeed, you wouldn't be far off. But this crooner has one of music's
most interesting life stories. Beginning his professional life as a goalie
for Spanish soccer team Real Madrid, Iglesias became a lawyer after a car
accident left him unable to play soccer. This might have been the end of the
story, but Iglesias - who'd always played guitar and written songs - won a
music contest and was signed by Columbia Records. From there, it was just a
matter of time before Iglesias seduced Europe. He recorded hits in Spanish
and French before finally conquering North America. We all know the result:
his duet on "To All the Girls I've Loved Before" with Willie Nelson, and
hundreds of other gentle classics. Iglesias has recently teamed up with
Latin Pop hitmakers including Alejandro Sanz in an effort to return to that
market.

Initially considered a Latin version of Madonna, Gloria Estefan developed from a dance diva into a respected songstress. With her husband on keyboards and in the producer's seat, Estefan's band Miami Sound Machine evolved from a wedding band to a veritable hit machine in the 1980s, composing accessible dance tunes that fused Disco with Salsa. "Conga" and "Rhythm is Gonna Get You" were chart-topping dance anthems rooted in Afro-Cuban rhythms that foreshadowed the tropical music explosion. In 1993 she released a Spanish language record, "Mi Tierra (My Land)," which was a mix of nostalgic ballads and contemporary Salsa. Singing in her mother tongue, Estefan's voice reached a new level of sophistication and highlighted her formidable range. Featuring a guest appearance by Celia Cruz on "Alma Caribena (Latin Soul)" (2000), Estefan wholeheartedly embraces her Cuban heritage with superb arrangements. Gloria and her husband Emilio can be credited with putting Miami on the musical map and reconnecting across a great divide back to their motherland -- Cuba.

More Bob Marley than Bambaataa, Haitian emcee/producer Wyclef Jean is hip-hop's most globally minded star. Jean shot to stardom in the mid-'90s as a key member of the immensely popular Fugees. Though that group only released two proper albums, and disbanded before following up the multi-platinum The Score, their footprint remains heavy on everything from boho rap to mainstream hip-hop. After their tumultuous dissolution, Wyclef released his solo debut The Carnival in 1997. Whether experimenting with Caribbean rhythms ("Guantanamera") or pop ballads ("Gone 'Till November"), the album was a celebration of eclecticism. His next four disks ranged from decent (2000's The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II A Book) to great (04's Welcome To Haiti Creole 101), but they were always unpredictable and fun. In 2006, he had his biggest hit since the days of the Fugees when he produced Shakira's dancefloor anthem "Hips Don't Lie." He returned to the charts in 2007 with "Sweetest Girl," a smash featuring it-boyz Lil' Wayne and Akon. His sixth album, Carnival, Vol. 2, was released in December, 2007.

Born Matthew Miller in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Matisyahu spent his youth as an itinerant hippie, following Phish and searching for meaning in his life. On a trip to Israel, Matisyahu rediscovered Judaism. After penning a play entitled "Echada," about a boy who meets a Hassidic rabbi in Washington Square Park in New York, Matisyahu's life oddly imitated his art, and he met a Lubavitch rabbi in the park, spurring his name change from Matthew to Matisyahu, one of the heroes of the Chanukah story. After a few false starts, Matisyahu became deeply immersed in the Hasidic tradition of mystical singing. It took just a few leaps to arrive at his current incarnation, as what may be the world's first Hasidic reggae singer.

For over three decades, Toots Hibbert's exhortatory vocals and evangelistic stage delivery charged Jamaican popular music with the fervor of American gospel-rooted soul singers like Otis Redding, Solomon Burke, and Wilson Pickett.

Toots Hibbert spent his first 15 years in a small town in the Jamaican countryside; he left home for Kingston in 1961 and formed a vocal trio with Nathaniel Matthias and Raleigh Gordon. Coxsone Dodd produced their first Jamaican hits — "Hallelujah" (1963) and "Six and Seven Books of Moses" (1963) — when they called themselves the Vikings. They left Dodd for Prince Buster in 1964 and recorded "Little Slea" as the V. Maytals before deciding to work as the Maytals. In the next two years they worked mainly with Byron Lee and his Ska-Kings band. With hits like "If You Act This Way" (1964) and "John and James" (1965), they became a leading group of the ska era.

In 1966 they won the Jamaican Song Festival prize with Hibbert's "Bam Bam." That same year Hibbert was jailed for possession of marijuana. After his release 12 months later, the Maytals recorded "54-46," commemorating his prison experience, for Leslie Kong's Beverley's label. Among the Maytals' other Beverley sides was "Do the Reggay" [sic], the 1968 song usually credited with coining the term "reggae."

By that time Kong was releasing Maytals singles in Britain; "Monkey Man" was the first Maytals song to chart overseas (Number 47 U.K., 1970) (it was covered in 1979 by the Specials on their debut album). Following Kong's death in 1971, the Maytals worked with his former partner Warwick Lynn and established a following.

The 1972 release of The Harder They Come introduced the Maytals to the U.S.; the film's soundtrack featured "Sweet and Dandy" and "Pressure Drop." In 1975, now known as Toots and the Maytals, they signed their first major contract with Island Records. Island released Funky Kingston — a collection culled from Trojan's Funky Kingston and In the Dark — which contained the Maytals' unique interpretations of John Denver's "Country Roads," in which "West Virginia" became "West Jamaica." Also in 1975 Toots and the Maytals made their first tour of the U.S., opening shows for the Who. The tour was badly planned, and the Maytals were booed off the stage at many dates. While they remained critical favorites, the Maytals could never match Bob Marley's or Peter Tosh's popularity.

Toots went solo in 1982, although he continued to tour as Toots and the Maytals. In 1988 at Memphis's Ardent recording studio he was accompanied by Sly and Robbie and producer Jim Dickinson (Alex Chilton, Replacements) and recorded a set of Stax/Volt covers, Toots in Memphis. In the late-90s, Toots recorded two new studio albums, Recoup and Ska Father. Toots and the Maytals returned in 2004 signed under V2 for True Love followed by Light Your Light in 2007 which received a Best Reggae Album Grammy nomination.

Proud owners of one of rap music's most unique sounds, Cypress Hill first introduced themselves to the world with the 1991 neck-breaker "How I Could Just Kill a Man." A wide range of fans became instantly enamored with B-Real's freaky nasal raps, Sen Dog's psychotic back-up vocals, DJ Muggs' eclectic collection of acidic loops, and, of course, the group's frequent reference to their favorite hobby. Whereas most rappers fade into the sunset after a few albums, Cypress are still going strong well into the new millenium. In 2004, they released their ninth LP, appropriately titled Till Death Do Us Part.

Astrud's singularly pure and almost vibrato-less voice has the ability to send chills down your spine, whether she's singing in English or Portuguese. Bursting on the scene from nowhere in the mid-1960s, Gilberto won the world over (and a Grammy, as well) with her smooth rendition of "The Girl From Ipanema." Having previously been Joao Gilberto's translator, wife and assistant, Astrud caught the ear of Stan Getz with her impromptu home performances of Joao's (and Antonio Carlos Jobim's) laid-back Brazilian songs. Before moving on to Disco-influenced Funk in the '70s, Astrud's luscious vocals graced the arrangements and recordings of Jobim, Getz, Don Sebesky and Gil Evans, among others. Do yourself a favor: find a loved one and a bottle of wine and relax by the fire to some of the best Bossa Nova ever recorded.

Recruited by Eric Burdon, War first hit the charts with "Spill the Wine," an instantly recognizable soul/rock hit that opened the door for what was coming. After one record, Burdon left to focus on his personal fade from public view. This freed up War for more success with their hybrid of soul, rock, jazz and Latin rhythms. Distinctly Southern California, their multi-ethnic lineup served as a cross section of the Los Angeles area that they represented. The horn-spiked Chicano anthems "Low-Rider" and "The Cisco Kid" spoke to an audience poorly represented in popular music. Laced with a certain street logic, War predated Rodney King with their feelgood hit "Why Can't We Be Friends?" The barrier-breaking continued until the late 1970s, when they began taking themselves too seriously. Their loose grooves had the hip-hop community paying attention, which spurred a reunion in the mid-1990s.

By softening up the edges and adding a Latin-influenced bed of tropical percussion, Liebert has turned Flamenco into a widely appealing genre that has topped the new age charts on multiple occasions. His fleet-fingered picking may not put him in the same echelon as guitarists such as Paco De Lucia, but Liebert's music is designed to please the audience with a sprinkling of exotic flavors. Songs such as "Ballad for Santana" showcase the bittersweet side of his playing, while the hit "Barcelona Nights" is as attractive as a starry night on a Mediterranean cruise. A variety of styles make up Liebert's sound: Rumba, Merengue, classical, dance, jazz and rock all help to make his music the accessibly exciting aural opiate that it is.

Not actually a band proper but a confluence of veteran Cuban musicians brought together for a recording session by American guitarist Ry Cooder after a 1996 trip to Havana. The project became the surprise hit of 1997 when its resulting album, Buena Vista Social Club, wound up selling over five million copies, largely by word of mouth, and won a Grammy for Best Tropical Latin Performance. The Buena Vista Social Club did more internationally for Cuban music than decades of cultural exchanges ever could and simultaneously helped popularize the world music genre in the late-1990s.

Cooder was invited to Havana by the British world music producer Nick Gold to a record African High-life musicians with a group of Cuban players. When the African musicians failed to get their visas, Cooder and Gold instead recorded an album of son — a polyrhythmic musical style long popular in Cuba — with veteran local musicians. After assembling the core group — musical director Juan de Marcos González, bassist Orlando "Cachaito" López, guitarist Eliades Ochoa, pianist Rubén González and singers Manuel "Puntillita" Licea and Compay Segundo — the recording session began at the Havana studio Egrem, an old RCA Records Studio with 1950s vintage equipment.

The album's fourteen tracks were recorded in six days. One of the songs, "Buena Vista Social Club," was written by Cachaíto's father about an old Havana gathering place. Cooder decided to name the group and album after the club. When Cooder returned to Havana two years later with his percussionist son, Joaquim, to record Ferrar for a solo album, director Wim Wenders followed them. His film, Buena Vista Social Club, is mix of footages from that trip and Buena Vista's live performances in New York City and Amsterdam. The film was nominated for an Academy Award in 2000. Though several solo albums came out of the project, the renewed attention for the veteran Cuban musicians was short-lived. In 2003, Compay Segundo and Ruben González died at ages 95 and 84, respectively; Ferrer died at 78 in 2005. Despite their losses, the group continues to tour with a revolving line-up of musicians.

Along with Aswad, Steel Pulse have been leaders in British Reggae, drawing inspiration from the music of Bob Marley and Burning Spear to mold their own Jamaican-inspired sound. They started their career opening for the Clash, the Sex Pistols and Generation X, inserting a bit of Punk edginess into their heavy sound. Tracks like "Ku Klux Klan" and "Earth Crisis" carried political messages stowed away on catchy, bass-heavy grooves that ultimately founded the Pop-Reggae genre. Lead singer David Hinds -- instantly recognizable for his massive, up-shooting palm tree of dreadlocks -- has taken the band through many musical realms during their extended career, but has consistently based their sound around traditional Roots influences, searing guitar solos and blazing horns. After delving a little too heavily into overproduced, synth-based music, Steel Pulse have returned to their original sound.

Jamaican born and Brooklyn raised, Shaggy first entered the pop charts with his 1993 remake of the reggae classic "Oh Carolina." Sampling the Peter Gunn theme and treating the lyrics with his self-named "dog-a-muffin" style, Shaggy charmed the charts and soon found himself signed to Virgin Records for an unprecedented wad of cash. The investment paid off in 1995, when "Boombastic" (off the album of the same name) became a ubiquitous hit both in the U.S. and abroad, as Shaggy boasted of his sexual prowess in his signature growl. But his following release didn't fare as well, and Virgin dropped him, assuming they had a one-hit wonder whose hit was spent. The move was disastrous for them but it proved to be a boon to MCA, who snapped him up and hit pay dirt when 2000's Hot Shot ended up selling over six million copies, mostly on the strength of the phenomenally successful single "It Wasn't Me." Though his follow-up, 2002's Lucky Day, didn't produce a hit on the order of "It Wasn't Me," it still performed well -- and Shaggy, with his randy persona and witty lyricism, always seems to find his way back to the charts.

Beirut interpret gypsy folk from an indie perspective. At the center of the group is young prodigy Zach Condon, who delves deep into traditional roots music from Eastern Europe and the Balkans as well as the mariachi of his native Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was first introduced to gypsy folk music through the films of director Emir Kusturica (Time of the Gypsies, Underground). Rather than trying to merely copy gypsy songs, he borrows its sounds to make emotive pop that's full of joy, sadness and longing. On the band's 2006 debut, The Gulag Orkestar, Condon takes a DIY approach where he sings and plays most of the instruments (saxophone, clarinet, mandolin, accordion and others). His very original take on regional folk brought Beirut critical acclaim, while their live shows -- complete with full brass and string sections -- drew international audiences throughout North America and Europe. On his sophomore album, The Flying Club Cup, with its decidedly French cabaret flair, Condon teamed up with multitalented violinist-producer Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy.

The daughter of innovative Bossa Nova guitarist Joao Gilberto and Brazilian singer Miucha, Bebel Gilberto definitely has strong musical genes. Graced with a clean, throaty voice that exudes a relaxed sexiness, she is equally comfortable singing in Portuguese and English. Early in her career, she worked with Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque (her uncle), David Byrne and Arto Lindsay. Lately, techno-sophisticated producer Suba has helped her develop an unpretentious modern sound based around Bossa Nova. Maintaining the primacy of the acoustic guitar in a jazz/bossa style, Gilberto and Suba add cool organ sounds, tight kit drumming, Brazilian percussion, funky basslines, and tasteful Soul horn hooks. Unobtrusive electronic treatments wander in and out, marking Gilberto's recordings with a hip, modern sensibility. Exquisitely warm sensuality well-suited for dance, romance, or ambiance.

A gentle force of nature, Antonio Carlos Jobim loved the way that Joao Gilberto tamed the Samba into Bossa Nova. By merging this with American jazz, European classical influences and his unique melodic gifts, Jobim became one of the few songwriters to rank alongside the likes of George Gershwin and Cole Porter. Even once you get past "The Girl of Ipanema" and discover such bittersweet gems as "Wave," "How Insensitive" and "Corcovado," only part of his canon is truly Bossa Nova. Jobim constantly experimented with song suites and impressionistic instrumentals and he never stopped evolving as an artist. He was a master arranger, but when not recording jazzy, stripped-down albums, he most often worked with Claus Ogerman, who supplied string backings for his improvisations. With his lilting piano and guitar styles and a charming "musician's" voice, Jobim the performer was almost as satisfying as Jobim the composer but many of his finest albums are actually collaborations. Besides the evergreen Getz/Gilberto, his recordings with Frank Sinatra and Elis Regina (entitled Elis and Tom) belong in every jazz and pop music collection. Jobim lived in the United States and Europe during much of Brazil's dark period of martial law but he spent the last couple of decades of his life fighting against the destruction of his homeland's natural wonders. Long a favorite of jazz musicians and vocalists, Antonio Carlos Jobim's music remains as popular as when he first sang about that passing beauty on the beach in Ipanema.

Ramazzotti is an Italian-born singer who's found success on the Latin pop circuit. In the early '90s his albums were going platinum across Europe, and they were being translated into Spanish for that market. BMG International took notice of his crossover appeal and signed Ramazzotti. Ramazzotti first appeared on the Latin Pop charts in 1994 with Todos Historias, but it wasn't until 1997's Eros that he really established himself. Stylistically he veers between pop-friendly balladry and a more rock-oriented style.

Based in Texas, this brother act garnered a strong regional following thanks in part to constant touring but mostly because of their excellent synthesis of roots music. Born into a musical family, the three Garza brothers picked up instruments around the time they learned to walk. As teenagers they often supported their father on live dates, and after a less-than-successful turn in Nashville, the group decided to proceed as a trio. The evolved sound caught the ear of Willie Nelson, who invited the band to record their first album at his studio. With strong brother harmonies and a panoply of influences that includes Tex-Mex and R&B, the band's self-titled 2004 debut was a warm, extremely comfortable affair that boasts a few outstanding tracks.

The masculine answer to Celtic Woman, Celtic Thunder are a multimedia experience for Celto-philes who value visuals as much as audio. The vocal group is the brainchild of producer Sharon Browne (with an assist from Irish composer Phil Coulter) and features five singers ranging in age from 14 to 39. With a repertoire that spans from Irish ballads to contemporary pop -- such as "Desperado" and "Nights in White Satin" -- they perform a set that resembles ancient stone pathways in a bid to evoke a mystical Celtic past. They're frequently joined by a full band, bagpipes and, when required, monks. The group came to light in August 2007 with the taping of their debut Dublin performance, which quickly became a staple on PBS stations around the United States, tapping into America's obsession with its Irish roots. The group grew into an international phenomenon, and it undertook a tour of the U.S. in late 2008.

R. Carlos Nakai is undoubtedly the most important Native American flute player in the world. His powerful solo work helped define the genre, and collaborations with international artists and high-profile composers such as Philip Glass have brought the flute to concert halls around the world. Born in Flagstaff, Ariz., to Navajo-Ute parents, Nakai began his musical career on the trumpet. He had the makings of a seriously talented classical player, but instead of enrolling at Juilliard he ended up in the Navy, where a 1970 car accident permanently damaged his embouchure. Though he continued to play trumpet, Nakai knew he'd never regain his former skills, and in 1982 he took up the Native American flute after meeting a flute maker. At the time, few musicians (native or non-) played the flute, and Nakai investigated both the instrument's history and traditional songs. His first self-produced release attracted the attention of Canyon Records, and within a few years he had become the label's star performer. Over the years Nakai has experimented with jazz and fusion, but his flute is always front and center.

Born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico in 1977, Daddy Yankee (aka Raymond Ayala) got his start singing with DJ Playero while he was still in his teens. After a few appearances on compilations, he released his platinum-selling debut El Cartel De Yankee I in 2000, which was quickly followed by El Cartel De Yankee II in 2001. Now firmly established as a star in the crowded reggaeton field, Daddy Yankee began his crossover bid in 2004, when his song "Gasolina" (off of 2004's Barrio Fino) climbed charts at home and abroad.
A.R. Rahman is the go-to guy for the Bombay film industry, a sure-fire hitmaker whose unconventional compositions have inspired a sometimes stagnant genre. Born in 1966, Rahman grew up in south India surrounded by music; he was playing piano by age 4 and performing professionally by age 11. As an adult, he spent a good five years composing jingles for advertisements - a high pressure pursuit that was probably the best preparation for the Indian film industry (the world's biggest) he could have. Rahman made his mark when he was asked to compose the soundtrack for the film Roja in 1993. The soundtrack was a huge seller and won every award imaginable, and his fledgling career was made. As a composer, Rahman's style is instantly recognizable and often imitated. He's a musical omnivore: synthesizers meet flamenco guitar, rock 'n' roll rubs up against Indian folk and classical, and they all seem to get along. Rahman is also known for breaking new and untrained vocalists in a notoriously insular field.

One could make a case that Sam Cooke was never murdered, but instead escaped to Jamaica to be reborn as Jimmy Cliff. Cliff radiates more soul than a cathedral on Christmas day. His 1970 album Wonderful World, Beautiful People put reggae on the map, while showing how various global styles (Ska, R&B, Gospel, and protest music) could be fused together without diluting any one element. The public, as well as artists like Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, revered him, and the film The Harder They Come cemented Cliff's lofty position. He was soon overshadowed by the rise of Bob Marley, but his amazing vocal gifts and songwriting talents put him back on top of the reggae heap.

When Ricky Martin crossed over to English language audiences in 1999, he seemed to come out of nowhere. But this former member of Menudo had been a Latin Pop star for most of the 1990s. The charismatic Martin is a throwback to a time when musicians were also entertainers. He can sing up a storm, dance, and smile, all at the same time -- a refreshing change of pace in an era when most modern pop and hip-hop stars have little to offer but seriousness. Martin may not have the substance of Marc Anthony, but he is one of the hardest-working people in show business, seemingly able to work in any musical style -- neo Salsa, romantic ballads and Jangle Pop, to name a few.
