Living up to his regal title, King Sunny Ade of Nigeria stands as one of the most important African musicians ever. Ade is the chief proselytizer of Juju music, an African popular music that developed in Nigeria in the '60s, fusing local folklore with Highlife and Western pop. Born to Nigerian royalty, Ade began his music career in the '60s, became a superstar at home in the '70s and set out to conquer the world in the '80s with his huge band of Juju warriors. His early '80s recordings for Mango (Juju Music and Synchro System) are still regarded as crucial albums. Leading a large percussion-heavy band, Ade contrives magical guitar phrases that are both fluid and abrupt while his caressing tenor voice calls forth a powerful response. Electric and pedal steel guitars weave melodies over a battery of drums (including the talking drum) that plays complex rhythms while call-and-response vocals tell stories. Entering the new millennium, Ade continues to dazzle audiences worldwide.

In Nigeria, Majek Fashek is known for his mystical powers and documented rainmaking ability. His equally impressive songs blend Roots Reggae with African music in a powerful package that's both spiritually and socially conscious. Talking drums and Juju rhythms permeate Fashek's emotional sound, which he calls "Kpangolo."

One of the masters of Juju music, Nigeria's complex mixture of drumming, electric guitars and vocals, Ebenezer Obey is a prolific recording artist whose career spans the entire existence of the style. Starting in the early 1960s with the International Brothers, Obey helped build the foundation of modern Juju by mixing blues and soul guitar riffs with Yoruba and other West African rhythms. As songs became longer, they were able to absorb unusual melodies. While the interlocking drums and percussion maintained the rhythmic pulse, the talking drum and pedal steel (Hawaiian) guitar would jump in with phrases not unlike the call-and-response vocals that characterize the style. Most lyrical themes pertain to Obey's Christian faith or praise the worthy and generous. He's enjoyed an intense yet friendly rivalry with King Sunny Ade over the years as both of them expanded the size of their bands to twenty or even thirty musicians.

The only African musician to have been awarded the MBE (Member of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth, I.K. Dairo is fondly remembered as the father of Juju music. After working as a singer and guitarist for other groups, he formed the Morning Star Orchestra in 1956, later changing the name to Blue Spots. At the time Juju music was centered around call-and-response vocals and the talking drum and incorporated diverse African and Latin rhythms. Dairo is credited with expanding its repertoire to include more elements of Yoruba folklore and oral history. Dairo also introduced the button accordion and the slide guitar, transforming Juju into a more sophisticated popular music. His skills as a composer and lyricist are universally respected by Nigerians (not just Yorubas), and musicians are forever in his debt for founding Nigeria's first performing rights society. He remained an innovator and a gracious ambassador of African music until passing in 1996.
