Yanni is a gifted keyboardist who places melodramatic passion into a pioneering Adult Alternative/new age/Contemporary Instrumental hybrid of complex popular and classical styles. He updates the florid style of Roger Williams, the crossover ivory-tinkler of the Eisenhower years, with an impressive combination of acoustic and electric orchestrations. Draped in silky duds and an even silkier mustache, Yanni was already wildly successful when he became the "Great Greek Hope" of aging female baby boomers everywhere after marrying the ever stylish, but older, Linda Evans.
It is unfair to blame him for either PBS placing Yanni Live at the Acropolis on heavier rotation than Sesame Street or for the symphonic overstatement of John Tesh -- Yanni's number one disciple.

The classically trained Jim Brickman has a firm grasp of pop songcraft and an understanding of various genres of music. Instead of working in expansive soundscapes, Brickman's piano structures his emotional tunes in bite-size chunks, which allows him to collaborate with everybody from Carly Simon to Herb Alpert. Since debuting on Windham Hill in 1994 with No Words, Brickman has released 16 albums of original material (including two Christmas records and an album of Christian music) and a greatest hits collection. He continues to tour, record and appear on both the adult contemporary and country charts today.

Not only is John Barry one of the greatest film composers to emerge from the 1960s (when he was also a pop star), he may be the first composer to achieve fame on the level of a Hollywood star. Forever linked to James Bond films and the swinging London of the '60s, Barry continues to be an excellent and diverse artist who excels at brooding melancholia and atmospheric jazz beyond the Austin Powers-style grooviness he's so often associated with. Besides winning numerous Academy Awards for scores to such movies as The Lion In Winter, Born Free and Dances With Wolves, he's developed a cult of female fans enraptured with his richly romantic scores to Out of Africa and, in particular, Somewhere in Time. Interestingly, Barry has said that he prefers these brooding pieces to the sweeping theme of Born Free, his most popular recording outside of the Bond theme (which was originally credited to another composer). Barry still makes modern classical and jazz music when he's not working on film scores.

Glenn Miller put a whole nation "In the Mood." Miller led the most successful big band of the Swing era -- not a bad accomplishment considering that a strong sense of swing was the only thing this trombonist lacked. Thankfully, Miller corralled a wonderful group of musicians and arrangers and had hit after deserving hit during the War years. The era of Bobby Soxers and rationing may be over but "Moonlight Serenade," "Pennsylvania 6-5000," and the evergreen "In the Mood" have been embraced by the new generation of Lindy Hoppers. The man himself died when his plane was shot down over the English Channel, but his band continues in one form or another to this day. Critics still debate whether Miller was a jazz musician or not, but nobody ever questions how good he was at what he did.

Loved as the oversized, easily agitated comedic genius behind The Honeymooners and other television and Broadway shows, Jackie Gleason was also a superb (if underused) dramatic actor and a musical maven whose "mood music" albums of the 1950s and early '60s remain highly prized today. Gleason's easy listening work often topped the pop charts and is among the finest the genre ever produced. Yet it's always been questionable what Gleason actually did on his albums since so many other people played on and arranged them. It's most likely that Gleason told his excellent team, which included jazz soloists like Bobby Hackett, about the sounds he had in his mind, selected the tunes for the albums, and worked with the art director to create atmospheric album covers. Although his biggest selling release, Lonesome Echo (1955), features a painting by Salvador Dali, Gleason's record sleeves are more often graced with dewy-eyed sentimental/suicidal beauties weighted by cigarettes, booze and memories of better days. These covers perfectly mirror the lushly romantic, yet melancholic, nature of Gleason's jazzy music, which becomes downright depressive on his infamously morose Christmas album which sounds like a hallucinating drunk remembering past holidays from a bar stool. This sentimental streak ran deep in Gleason, and he abused and worshipped whiskey. In fact, it is said that it was Gleason who introduced a clean living Frank Sinatra to Jack Daniels.

This bandleader is famous for introducing the "hum-sing-hum" chorus to pop music. Conniff noticed how the public usually latches onto only fragments of a song's lyrics, so he crafted arrangements of standards and hit tunes that emphasized their most memorable refrains. He had his faceless, ever-perky choir (picture a New England dinner theatre production of Night of the Living Dead) hum most of the songs, only chiming in with the key lyrics. Not only did Conniff's concoctions move millions of units, but the style was widely copied by just about every easy listening and jazz act throughout the 1950s and '60s. While Conniff was a lounge music revolutionary, his earlier roots in hot jazz helped ensure that his own music was often much better and more fun than that of his many imitators. His thematically linked album covers (featuring lone blonde goddesses being courted -- or surrounded -- by a phalanx of WASP lotharios) are a joy to record collectors and smarmy indie rock ironists everywhere. The latter group has also embraced Conniff's hip-after-the-fact recordings of soft rock, disco and funk hits.

This piano virtuoso was one of the architects of instrumental easy listening music. An excellent pianist with a thorough grasp of classical music, sweet big band swing and small-group jazz, Williams' technical mastery was matched by his feel for understated lyricism on one hand and flamboyant melodrama on the other. He played the piano the way that many Americans wished that they themselves could, and he had a string of hit albums and singles that spanned two decades. His most enduring moment remains his first hit, a chart-topping 1955 reading of the achingly beautiful "Autumn Leaves." His recording of the downbeat but lushly romantic French standard was introduced to a whole new audience when it was used as the musical theme of the movie Untamed Heart and as the favorite song of the film's protagonist (played by Christian Slater), who alternated between clutching Roger Williams albums and a fetching Marisa Tomei to his chest. Roger Williams' musical world is that romantic.

Few songs evoke the post-World War II world of America's new suburban landscapes as well as Percy Faith's enduring instrumental gem "Theme to a Summer Place." It was only one of the smash hits this key architect of easy listening music had during a recording career that lasted until his death in 1976. Faith, a Canadian-born arranger, bandleader and pianist, was a mainstay at Columbia Records, where, besides having a busy solo career, he wrote string-laden arrangements for such vocal stars as Doris Day, Johnny Mathis and Rosemary Clooney. Faith wasn't as jazz orientated as his arranging peers Nelson Riddle, Ray Conniff and Henry Mancini, but his music still endures, even if it's intrinsically tied to the era in which it was made.

As Dot Records' musical director in the late 1950s, orchestra leader Billy Vaughn was responsible for watering down many of the hot rock 'n' roll songs of the day and making them palatable for mainstream audiences. His success at this, as well as writing music for such chart-toppers as the Hilltoppers and the Fontane Sisters, landed him on the charts frequently throughout the late '50s and early '60s. Vaughn created lush, soothing melodies in a variety of styles: in addition to his cleaned-up rock 'n' roll, he brought orchestrated versions of Hawaiian music and traditional easy listening songs into homes across the country. Vaughn's legacy lives on today in grocery stores, elevators, shopping malls and on easy listening stations around the world.

If music is involved, Andre Previn can do it. He was a child prodigy who started his professional career while still in his teens. His hard-hitting, swinging piano style could also lull you with its sensitive touch. His trio (also under drummer Shelly Manne's name) had a monster hit with its jazz version of “My Fair Lady” and started the cottage industry of “jazz does big show” albums. At the same time, Previn was an arranger/composer with MGM and the film version of “My Fair Lady” is only one of his many credits. He also arranged his own jazz piano with orchestra albums for the mood music market. Previn, with a free afternoon or two, wrote songs with his first wife, Dory, before going onto an illustrious career as a classical conductor. We await his hip-hop phase with baited breath.

Considering they made their name recording background-ready easy listening records, Arthur Ferrante and Louis Teicher are a pretty interesting pair. True, the piano duo's output -- nearly a hundred records -- includes its share of sketchy judgment calls (Classical Disco, Rocky & Other Knockouts) and assembly-line productions: their lush, string-laden remakes of love songs and movie themes were practically seasonal arrivals for many years. A good portion of these titles, immensely popular in the 1960s, can be obtained in their original LP form at your local thrift store. However, when not overly encumbered by orchestrations, the two have unleashed some truly noteworthy acts of unselfconscious invention, with albums such as the 1958 prepared-piano kook-fest Blast Off! attaining cult-classic status among "Incredibly Strange Music" enthusiasts. The duo continue to perform sporadically, releasing albums on their own label, the somewhat ironically named Avant-Garde.
