So you've seen Camp Rock, right? No? OK, then you've at least watched Barney once or twice. You haven't? What are you, some kind of grown-up? Well, then, chances are you've yet to come in contact with young Ms. Demi Lovato, who got her start showing her gums on the purple dino's cute-fest at age six and her big break as a star of Disney's 2008 rock-camp-themed movie-musical. But you're going to be seeing a lot more of her: The Dallas, Tex., native stars in the Disney Channel series Sonny with a Chance and makes headlines for her BFF-ship with fellow Disney starlet Selena Gomez. And her buddies the Jonas Brothers (who also star in Camp Rock) worked with Lovato, a longtime singer-songwriter, to put together her debut album in 2008. For album two, 2009's Here I Go Again, she enlisted John Mayer as inspiration and collaborator.

Fictional, animated metal gods Dethklok are the "heaviest and most popular metal band" in the world. Consisting of lyrical visionary and frontman Nathan Explosion, fastest guitarist in the world Swisgaar Swigelf, second fastest guitarist in the world Toki Wartooth, most full of hate bassist anywhere William Murderface, and Pickles, the world's most celebrated drummer, this part-American/part-Scandinavian group stars in the Adult Swim cartoon, Metalocalypse. Created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha as a sardonic homage to metalheads and metal's longstanding cliches, the show follows the exploits of the band and the committee that wants to destroy them. Featuring the catchy death metal songs that soundtracked each episode of season 1, 2007's Dethalbum was revered by real metal heads everywhere.

You love Vince Guaraldi's piano jazz whether you know it or not. Guaraldi wrote and performed the delightful scores for the Peanuts cartoons. This San Francisco native added his hard hitting yet sensitive piano skills to Cal Tjader's Latin Jazz band after a stint with the great Woody Herman. Guaraldi's keyboard style mixed the beauty of Bill Evans' melodic explorations with Horace Silver or Ramsey Lewis' crowd pleasing funkiness. He formed his own trio and had a Top-40 hit with "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" in 1963. His sublime work on the Peanuts television specials got no finer than on A Charlie Brown Christmas, which brings a touch of bittersweet tenderness to holiday cheer. Though he died young at the age of forty-seven in 1976, Guaraldi had already made his musical mark.

Danny Elfman and Tim Burton go together like Milk Duds and popcorn. But before Elfman was scoring movies for a grown up goth kid with his own production company, he was the leader of Oingo Boingo. What most of his fans don't know is that even Oingo Boingo was originally created for the sole purpose of a film soundtrack. Back in 1980, his brother Richard Elfman had made a film entitled The Forbidden Zone and had asked Danny to provide a soundtrack. He formed a band called the Mystic Knights of Oingo Boingo just for that purpose. The band engendered a cult following of new wave kids and cranked out some successful albums before Tim Burton hired Elfman to score his 1985 film, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. Elfman went on to work with Burton as well as with various other soundtrack projects including the theme song for The Simpsons.

Disney's other phenomenally successful movie-musical/cross-marketing cash cow, the Cheetah Girls have evolved from their humble -- OK, totally auspicious -- beginnings as the protagonists of a best-selling series of young-adult books about an all-girl pop band. In 2003, the Disney Channel made the very wise decision to turn the stories of Galleria, Chanel, Aquanetta and Dorinda into a made-for-TV movie starring tween princesses Raven-Symone, Adrienne Bailon, Kiely Williams and Sabrina Bryan. Two more films (with a fourth promised in 2010), their incredibly lucrative soundtracks and a Christmas album followed. In 2006, the Cheetah Girls (sans Raven-Symone) went live, for real this time, becoming an actual touring act (opening for Vanessa Hudgens). In 2007, the trio released TCG, their first non-soundtrack, non-holiday studio album.

The Partridge Family were derided as manufactured stars during their early-1970s heyday, but today they are loved for that very fact. After the Monkees, they put the "fab" in prefab. David Cassidy, the object of every nymphet's budding desires, may have led the TV group, but the Family was really the product of a crack team of cigar-chomping businessmen, Brill Building songwriters like Goffin/King, and top LA session players. The very professionalism of this behind-the-scenes team ensured some of the best, saccharine-rich bubblegum pop to come out of pre-Watergate America. Such hits as "I Think I Love You," still sound great oozing out of a pink plastic transistor radio, but who can remember any of today's teen hits two months after the fact? Any rock group backed by Shirley Jones has to be worth its weight in Danny Bonaduce's non-prescription pharmaceuticals. "Come On Get Happy?" Love to.

Have you ever found yourself watching 1984's epic film Romancing The Stone and thought, "Who the hell threw down this brilliant score to compliment Robert Zemeckis' exquisite cinematography?" Well, gentle reader, you can now revel in the delights of knowledge, for it was none other than Alan Silvestri. Oh, but it didn't stop there. For as careers seem to snowball in the magic city of Hollywood, so too did Silvestri's. A year later, he found himself donning headphones and waving the conductor's wand on the set of Back to the Future. The weight of the project was so intense that he took three years off until he found himself at the mixing board once again, this time scoring the classic film Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. From there, his "snowball" exploded into an avalanche of opportunity, with Silvestri doing the scores for Forrest Gump, What Lies Beneath, Flight of the Navigator, Predator (but not Alien vs. Predator, which was scored by the lionhearted Marco Beltrami), The Abyss (but not Ghosts of the Abyss, which was scored by the illustrious Joel McNeely), The Bodyguard, and The Quick and the Dead.

If you haven't heard of him, Andrew Gold is the mastermind behind songs like "Thank You for Being a Friend" (theme song for The Golden Girls) and the Mad About You theme. He also arranged and played on many of Linda Ronstadt's hits in the 1970s, most notably "You're No Good." Indeed, it's impossible to avoid this artist's work if you're over the age of 15. His work personifies the kind of friendly, ultrasmooth tone that impacted the TV theme song genre for years. With seamless harmonies, loping piano accompaniments, and an ever-present smile in his voice, Gold's music can still transport you back to a time when all-velour outfits were socially acceptable and roller-skates with retractable wheels were sold on television.

Alfred Hitchcock had Bernard Herrmann. David Lynch has Angelo Badalamenti to match haunting synth-driven scores to vivid, eccentric images. Badalamenti is one of the few Hollywood composers allowed to use his signature style in project after project. It did take him decades to receive that freedom, but his carte blanche arrived when Lynch tapped him to do the score for Blue Velvet and the Twin Peaks TV series. From there, Badalamenti has contributed lushly melodic themes to romantic comedy's such as Cousins and bleak Electro freak-outs for intelligent suspense with Arlington Road. He has also successfully branched into pop albums, working with the Pet Shop Boys, Marianne Faithfull, and Twin Peaks chanteuse Julee Cruise. But above all else, the working relationship with Lynch continues and Badalamenti's beautiful Americana score for The Straight Story was as heartfelt as the movie.

Even if you don't know anyone under the age of thirteen, you're likely to be familiar with the Pokemon theme song, or "Pokerap," the song that lists all 150+ Pokemon characters played at the end of the show. These are fun Pop-Rap numbers with slow beats bouncing through the catchy songs -- some are light and playful, while others are more somber, reflecting tender moments in the movie. After listening to this, you won't be able to escape the burning question of our time: "What Kind of Pokemon are you?"

Not only is composer Bill Conti recognized by his peers for his fine film compositions, but two of his movie theme songs, "Gonna Fly Now" from Rocky and the James Bond theme "For Your Eyes Only," have topped the pop charts. Conti did excellent work in Hollywood throughout the 1970s, and in 1983 he won an Academy Award for his score to the underrated The Right Stuff. Fans of hairspray, shoulder pads and conspicuous consumption love his instantly recognizable themes to the TV shows Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and Dynasty, while his stylish score to the 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair became a favorite "chill-out" album among the club set.

Basil Poledouris has composed the music for many films, revealing in his lush arrangements and heavily dramatic scores a wonderful ability to propel the action onscreen. Nowhere is that more apparent than in Conan the Barbarian, a sumptuous aural feast that contains elements of post-Romanticism (think Saint-Saens' "Bacchanale"), early Eastern European Chants, and Middle Eastern music. True, there is something more than slightly inflated about the sound, but that's the beauty of it: Poledouris unabashedly creates a larger-than-life, sweeping score that is a perfect sonic mirror of the sword-and-sorcery fantasy playing out on the screen. For fans of large symphonic tone poems, it makes for delightful listening outside of the theater. The composer also created the award-winning music for the critically acclaimed television series Lonesome Dove, revealing a distinct Aaron Copland influence.

Mike Post is the undisputed king of modern television drama themes. He's seemingly written them all, from Law and Order to L.A. Law. What else do you want? The theme to NYPD Blue? Here. The theme to the saucy and ribald Silk Stalkings? Present and accounted for. Post is renowned for writing themes that instantly convey all the drama and tension of the programs themselves. While his intro to Law and Order is mellow and street smart, his work for NYPD Blue matches the show's melodrama and fast editing style pulse for pulse.

2003's American Idol contestants have nestled their way into the hearts of the American public with unparalleled fervor, and for good reason. For the most part, this group of finalists is substantially more talented than 2002's crop; Kelly Clarkson was a shoe-in for the top spot last season, whereas this year, three or four contestants are talented enough to walk away with it. Who hasn't enjoyed watching the geek-to-chic transformation of Clay Aiken and Kimberly Locke? Whose heart didn't wrench whenever U.S. Marine Josh Gracin led the contestants in "God Bless the U.S.A. (Proud to be An American)." Who hasn't sat on his couch yelling "Roooooobin" along with the audience whenever honey-throated Ruben Studdard gets up to sing? And then there's Trenyce, whose resemblance to Diana Ross is remarkable!

Producer, label head, synth player, and guitarist Neil Norman is best known to the listening public (or at least portions of it) for his arrangements of sci-fi and outer-space related soundtrack music. His Greatest Science Fiction Hits series, for example, includes reworkings of themes from Dr. Who, Star Wars, The Twilight Zone, War of the Worlds, and many other films. Tracks range from spooky synth-scapes to guitar-driven space boogies. Then there are his numerous Star Trek-related efforts which include not only reworkings of music from the many films and TV show spin-offs, but also a full album's worth of sound effects that are bound to come in handy for the devoted Trekkie.

Though certainly not a household name like Jon Williams or Jerry Goldsmith, this composer of film and television soundtracks has had a long and colorful career. With several Academy Award nominations under his belt, he has worked on such projects as Funny Face, Guys and Dolls, Dr. Doolittle, My Fair Lady, and Superman IV: the Quest for Peace. But his greatest triumph as a composer is without question his brilliant theme music to the original Star Trek television series. From the eerie soundscapes accompanying the Talosian threat to the soft-lensed exoticism accompanying the green skinned Vena's dance to the loungy optimism of the main title, Courage created a soundtrack to accompany the lives and fantasies of countless sci-fi geeks. And given the number of Trekkies roaming the planet, that is quite a legacy to leave.
