Besides his extensive work in film and television, Hans Zimmer has played with and produced a variety of pop acts, including Joe Strummer, the Damned and Whitney Houston.(The space between punk pioneers the Damned and former pop princess Whitney Houston underscores the breadth of Zimmer's talents.)
Not only is John Barry one of the greatest film composers to emerge from the 1960s (when he was also a pop star), he may be the first composer to achieve fame on the level of a Hollywood star. Forever linked to James Bond films and the swinging London of the '60s, Barry continues to be an excellent and diverse artist who excels at brooding melancholia and atmospheric jazz beyond the Austin Powers-style grooviness he's so often associated with. Besides winning numerous Academy Awards for scores to such movies as The Lion In Winter, Born Free and Dances With Wolves, he's developed a cult of female fans enraptured with his richly romantic scores to Out of Africa and, in particular, Somewhere in Time. Interestingly, Barry has said that he prefers these brooding pieces to the sweeping theme of Born Free, his most popular recording outside of the Bond theme (which was originally credited to another composer). Barry still makes modern classical and jazz music when he's not working on film scores.

Academy Award-winning film composer began his career scoring Roger Corman's productions in the 1970s. While Humanoids From the Deep and Battle Beyond the Stars are fun and all, Horner soon went on to much bigger things -- the '80s found the composer to be a very hot commodity indeed. His scores to Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan and Aliens were huge successes, showcasing his bombastic dramatic sense and epic, sweeping style. Recent years have brought Braveheart as well as his most well-known score to date, Titanic. Critics often bash him for his notorious tendency to borrow from past works, something he does more than even, perhaps, John Williams. Originality aside, however, Horner's music has a knack for keeping the audience teetering on the edge of their seats, and that's something no one can complain about.

Have you ever found yourself watching 1984's epic film Romancing The Stone and thought, "Who the hell threw down this brilliant score to compliment Robert Zemeckis' exquisite cinematography?" Well, gentle reader, you can now revel in the delights of knowledge, for it was none other than Alan Silvestri. Oh, but it didn't stop there. For as careers seem to snowball in the magic city of Hollywood, so too did Silvestri's. A year later, he found himself donning headphones and waving the conductor's wand on the set of Back to the Future. The weight of the project was so intense that he took three years off until he found himself at the mixing board once again, this time scoring the classic film Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. From there, his "snowball" exploded into an avalanche of opportunity, with Silvestri doing the scores for Forrest Gump, What Lies Beneath, Flight of the Navigator, Predator (but not Alien vs. Predator, which was scored by the lionhearted Marco Beltrami), The Abyss (but not Ghosts of the Abyss, which was scored by the illustrious Joel McNeely), The Bodyguard, and The Quick and the Dead.

Argentinean Gustavo Santaolalla is a veteran rock musician, producer and soundtrack artist who has helped handcraft several generations of musicians. He led two influential rock bands in the 1960s and '70s, respectively: Arco Iris and Soluna. In 1978 he moved to the United States and within a few years became the producer behind the '80s wave of new Mexican rock, working with acts like Caifanes, Maldita Vecinidad and Cafe Tacuba. His label Surco's first release was Molotov's insanely popular Donde Jugaran Las Ninas?. He's produced a slew of critical and commercial successes: La Vela Puerca, Juanes and Bersuit Vergarabat, to name a few. He assembled the artists for the 2003 electronica/tango release Bajo Fondo Tango Club, helping to spearhead that movement in Argentina and Uruguay. Santaolalla also tried his hand at film soundtracks, crafting critically lauded -- and massively popular -- soundtracks for movies including Amores Perros and Motorcycle Diaries, which culminated in his Grammy-winning work on the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack.

Like other great film composers, Nino Rota found ways of creating new hybrid sounds by borrowing stylistic and instrumental devices from a variety of existing genres. Though he did some work writing symphonies and operas, this Italian is probably best known for his scores for the first two Godfather movies and for his longtime collaboration with director Federico Fellini. Enhancing films such as 8 1/2, Amarcord, and La Dolce Vita, Rota provided sweeping string arrangements alongside his own brand of lightly swinging small combo jazz. Even when removed from its original context and heard in the form of brief, isolated cues, Rota's music retains its singular presence as it alternates between romantic, anxious, carefree, and sentimental moods.

Featured on Holmes' 1995 debut release This Film is Crap Let's Slash the Seats and three years later on Kruder & Dorfmeister's Sessions, "Gone" brings out Trip-Hop's visual elements much like the experimental breakbeat stylings of Mo' Wax poster boy DJ Shadow. Enlisting the quasi-Shirley Bassey vocal resonance of Saint Etienne's Sarah Cracknell and Progressive Rock artist-turned-Ambient Techno composer Steve Hillage's atmospheric strings, Holmes turns out a murky roller of a track that breathes life into a lonely, James Bond-inspired tale of evil temptresses and governmental treachery. A vaguely noticeable Celtic essence emphasizes a sense of homesickness in this Belfast native's uneasy mix. With this track's brooding cinematic textures and oddly appealing sense of loneliness, Holmes draws a listener base of solitary moviegoers.

Even if you don't know anyone under the age of thirteen, you're likely to be familiar with the Pokemon theme song, or "Pokerap," the song that lists all 150+ Pokemon characters played at the end of the show. These are fun Pop-Rap numbers with slow beats bouncing through the catchy songs -- some are light and playful, while others are more somber, reflecting tender moments in the movie. After listening to this, you won't be able to escape the burning question of our time: "What Kind of Pokemon are you?"

From the big and blustery to the seductive and slinky, David Arnold has proven himself to be a crack composer for Hollywood films -- particularly those laden with action, suspense and special effects. It's no wonder that he received plenty of kudos for the edge-of-your-seat score he penned for Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), one in the endless series of James Bond films. Unfortunately, Arnold's music sometimes tends towards the overly bombastic, providing little subtlety or emotional range for the listener/viewer. In these moments, he doesn't distinguish himself from the myriad of post-Romantic-loving John Williams clones who drop musical bombs whenever a battle takes place, a hero returns to his lover or a villain laughs with maniacal glee. But Arnold can take successful detours into the realms of pop and dance: a song he composed with Bjork for the film The Young Americans (1993) became a U.K. hit, and he masterminded the James Bond music tribute Shaken and Stirred (1997) by utilizing the talents of Pulp's Jarvis Cocker and Artcore wiz LTJ Bukem.

Marc Shaiman was nominated five times for an Academy Award for his soundtrack work on the films Sleepless In Seattle, The American President, The First Wives Club, Patch Adams and South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. He actually lost every time, but in 2002 he was bestowed the "Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Music In Film" award at the 69th annual Hollywood Film Festival. Shaiman has worked with music scores and soundtracks for over 40 films including a project he teamed up with Eric Clapton on for the score for Rob Reiner's The Story of Us. He got his start working with Bette Midler and is largely responsible (or to blame, depending on how you look at it) for her success with "Wind Beneath My Wings."

The suggestively named Dick Hyman is best known to moviegoers as Woody Allen's main musical man -- he frequently gets to show off his Traditional Jazz piano chops on Allen's soundtracks. Mastering every style from Stride to Swing to Bop to Avant-Garde, Hyman is also loved by Lounge loafers for his bizarre, but always interesting, Moog and synth work of the late 1960s.

After gaining a reputation as a flexible, powerful bassist from his stints with bands such as Magazine and the Bad Seeds, Barry Adamson's solo career pays homage to classic film soundtrack music. Adamson's landmark debut, Moss Side Story (1989), utilized snippets of "fake" dialogue, swathes of dark ambiance and tension-filled strings to build an authentic Herrmann-esque feel for this "imaginary" soundtrack. Elements of jazz, Industrial, rock and Ska create vivid mental images of different scenes and characters. The success of his first few albums led to actual soundtrack work for the movies Delusion and Gas, Food & Lodging. Subsequent solo albums lean more heavily on actual songs and singers, though the filmic atmosphere still runs strong. Epic themes and sweeping strings provide the basis for Adamson's music, and one can always expect each song to conjure a distinct, cinematic experience.

Giorgio Moroder's exalted legacy is untouchable: his career has left an indelible stamp on dance music's history. His rhythms sashay like a runway model, progressing with noble elegance and cloaked in decadently lush orchestrations of shimmering electronics and acoustic symphonies that overflow with ecstasy. Unflinching diva vocals weave soulful words through a labyrinth of emotions. These anthems from the 1970s still resonate through today's progressive trance with their perfect mix of deep grooves, and sweet instrumentations that rise like champagne bubbles in a mimosa. When he hit Hollywood with his soundtrack and theme song productions, he sculpted eerie atmospheres of urban tensions and slight futurist paranoia. Though his career has had many ups and downs (compare "I Feel Love" with the soundtrack to D.C. Cab), when he is at his best, his tracks attain musical and emotional perfection.

Though Goblin are best known for their soundtracks to Dario Argento's horror films, they have produced a broad spectrum of sounds. Goblin's founding members (including Argento himself) had performed music together, but they formed Goblin in 1975 to provide the chilling, unforgettable Progressive twists and turns around the soundtrack to Argento's Profondo Rosso. They continued as a band, creating epic rock sojourns and scoring suspense and tension on celluloid (Suspiria, Tenebre, Martin). As time passed, they approached a more radio-ready sound that was patently '80s pop, while maintaining solid roots in Prog.

Harold Arlen went beyond even Gershwin in bringing the styles and feeling of jazz to Tin Pan Alley, movies and the stage. Arlen arranged for the great Fletcher Henderson before becoming a staff writer for the Cotton Club (where he penned "Stormy Weather"). From there he went Hollywood and Broadway at the same time. Arlen's music was infused with the blues and he worked with the finest lyricists, including Johnny Mercer and Ira Gershwin, and wrote the score to The Wizard of Oz with Yip Harbug. With or without words, his priceless melodies are favorites among jazz musicians. The son of a cantor, he sung his own songs in a fine, light voice and even recorded with Duke Ellington.
