Unquestionably one of the major film composers of our time, and a talented conductor for the prestigious Boston Pops as well. Although he's written dozens of blockbuster film scores, his closest association is probably with Steven Spielberg. Williams has written the music to nearly all of Spielberg's films, composing and conducting his scores to sync with the action down to the millisecond. Williams has mastered many aspects of classical composition, from the Stravinsky-like scurrying of the Jawas in Star Wars to Wagnerian attachment of themes to specific events and characters. Who can forget the dread evoked by the two note motive from Jaws, or Darth Vader's theme music? A multiple Academy Award winner, Williams has been nominated for the top prize over forty times so far -- and he has proven his ability to enhance the emotion of a scene with broad or subtle orchestral sweeps.

Not only is John Barry one of the greatest film composers to emerge from the 1960s (when he was also a pop star), he may be the first composer to achieve fame on the level of a Hollywood star. Forever linked to James Bond films and the swinging London of the '60s, Barry continues to be an excellent and diverse artist who excels at brooding melancholia and atmospheric jazz beyond the Austin Powers-style grooviness he's so often associated with. Besides winning numerous Academy Awards for scores to such movies as The Lion In Winter, Born Free and Dances With Wolves, he's developed a cult of female fans enraptured with his richly romantic scores to Out of Africa and, in particular, Somewhere in Time. Interestingly, Barry has said that he prefers these brooding pieces to the sweeping theme of Born Free, his most popular recording outside of the Bond theme (which was originally credited to another composer). Barry still makes modern classical and jazz music when he's not working on film scores.

Howard Shore was already starting to build his reputation as a film composer when he stepped out of his role as Saturday Night Live's first musical director in 1980 (his theme song is still used to this day). Shore was highly respected for his work in horror, suspense and black comedy, making him a natural fit for extended collaborations with such maverick, free-thinking directors as David Cronenberg, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme and David Fincher. He has amassed a large, intriguing body of work over the decades and retained the regard of his Hollywood peers while gaining the admiration of hobbits, elves and wizards after he scored all the movies in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Danny Elfman and Tim Burton go together like Milk Duds and popcorn. But before Elfman was scoring movies for a grown up goth kid with his own production company, he was the leader of Oingo Boingo. What most of his fans don't know is that even Oingo Boingo was originally created for the sole purpose of a film soundtrack. Back in 1980, his brother Richard Elfman had made a film entitled The Forbidden Zone and had asked Danny to provide a soundtrack. He formed a band called the Mystic Knights of Oingo Boingo just for that purpose. The band engendered a cult following of new wave kids and cranked out some successful albums before Tim Burton hired Elfman to score his 1985 film, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. Elfman went on to work with Burton as well as with various other soundtrack projects including the theme song for The Simpsons.

Undoubtedly one of the most skilled, prolific and imitated film composers in history. His spaghetti western themes from the 1960s have become so ingrained in popular culture that one need only strike an outlaw pose before someone in the room starts whistling the theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Though most often identified for the grand, heroic gestures of this period, he certainly did not limit himself to this style. From the eerie electronics of The Thing to the cross-cultural orchestration of The Mission, Morricone has shown himself capable of an absolutely remarkable breadth of expression. His forays outside of film music, including trumpet work in seminal improvisation ensemble Nuova Consonanza as well as numerous Avant-Garde and experimental compositions, further entrench his place among this century's most fascinating and important composers.

Academy Award-winning film composer began his career scoring Roger Corman's productions in the 1970s. While Humanoids From the Deep and Battle Beyond the Stars are fun and all, Horner soon went on to much bigger things -- the '80s found the composer to be a very hot commodity indeed. His scores to Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan and Aliens were huge successes, showcasing his bombastic dramatic sense and epic, sweeping style. Recent years have brought Braveheart as well as his most well-known score to date, Titanic. Critics often bash him for his notorious tendency to borrow from past works, something he does more than even, perhaps, John Williams. Originality aside, however, Horner's music has a knack for keeping the audience teetering on the edge of their seats, and that's something no one can complain about.

Randy "short people got no reason to live" Newman is a household name. No doubt about it. But did you know that darn near every member of his family has achieved a considerable amount of success in show biz? In fact, over the last 10 to 15 years film score composer Thomas Montgomery Newman has probably worked on more A-list blockbusters than Cousin Randy. A graduate of Yale University, Newman headed for Hollywood in the early '80s. His first scores, including those for Less Than Zero and The Lost Boys, were primarily electronic. He started employing more standard orchestration in the '90s, and with the change came a long string of mega-hits, including but in no way limited to The Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, Scent of a Woman, Erin Brockovich, Finding Nemo, The Good German and WALL-E. Newman has also plied his trade to television, most notably Six Feet Under and Angels in America. Much of his work post-Shawshank sees the composer filtering traditional orchestral music through the unconventional: world music-inspired percussion, ambient minimalism and so on. To date, Newman has won both Emmys and Grammys, but no Oscars, although he's been nominated eight times.

Alexandre Desplat's sublime compositions for Hollywood finally garnered him some well-deserved critical acclaim after scoring films in Europe in relative obscurity eversince 1991. Some of his best moments are the scores for Casanova, The Upside of Anger, Hostage, Birth, Syriana and The Girl With A Pearl Earring (the latter two of which landed him Golden Globe nominations). Whether he's using a computer program to compose with electronic music or fashioning a piece for the London Symphony Orchestra, Desplat's works are characterized by a seamless finesse in their instrumentation that gives birth to subtle ambiance, haunting tension, sparse beauty and the occasional outburst of galloping adventure.

Maurice Jarre is one of the founders of modern film soundtrack composing. He became a household name with his scores for David Lean -- Lawrence of Arabia earned him an Oscar, as did Doctor Zhivago. He currently has a similar relationship with another maverick director, the Australian Peter Weir.

Jerry Goldsmith has been the most consistent and consistently innovative film composer of the last four decades. He scores an average of six films a year and yet his music remains vital -- even his hack work has merit. With an equally firm grasp on classical, Avant-Garde, and jazz forms, he freely explores any avenue. His theme for The Omen has been ripped off by so many of his peers that he should receive royalties. Goldsmith's combination of synthesizers with jazz soloists in Chinatown still sounds timeless. Unfortunately, today's producers want him to churn out over-the-top pseudo-symphonies -- like The Mummy in 1998 -- and he often doesn't get to work at the height of his powers. But with his busy schedule, he can work on a couple of pet projects per year. Listen to his score for L.A. Confidential. Like most of Goldsmith's scores, it is the perfect marriage of music, character, and mood.

Michael Nyman is one of those rare composers whose scholarly and musical accomplishments have both brought him considerable fame. A film composer of the finest caliber, Nyman has contributed scores to several Peter Greenway films, including The Cook, The Thief, Her Wife and His Lover, and Prospero's Books, his modular style providing the perfect complement to director's beautifully composed images. His non-film music falls on the lighter side of the Avant-Garde, abandoning the bold, abstract statements of Stockhausen in favor the more accessible ethnic sound of "The Michael Nyman Band." But just as important as his musical work is his scholarly work. His 1974 book Experimental Music: Cage and Beyond has become an essential text for both casual connoisseurs of the genre to well-versed academics. And, lest we forget, Nyman coined the universally accepted musical term which many use to classify some of his own work: minimalism.

Basil Poledouris has composed the music for many films, revealing in his lush arrangements and heavily dramatic scores a wonderful ability to propel the action onscreen. Nowhere is that more apparent than in Conan the Barbarian, a sumptuous aural feast that contains elements of post-Romanticism (think Saint-Saens' "Bacchanale"), early Eastern European Chants, and Middle Eastern music. True, there is something more than slightly inflated about the sound, but that's the beauty of it: Poledouris unabashedly creates a larger-than-life, sweeping score that is a perfect sonic mirror of the sword-and-sorcery fantasy playing out on the screen. For fans of large symphonic tone poems, it makes for delightful listening outside of the theater. The composer also created the award-winning music for the critically acclaimed television series Lonesome Dove, revealing a distinct Aaron Copland influence.

Like other great film composers, Nino Rota found ways of creating new hybrid sounds by borrowing stylistic and instrumental devices from a variety of existing genres. Though he did some work writing symphonies and operas, this Italian is probably best known for his scores for the first two Godfather movies and for his longtime collaboration with director Federico Fellini. Enhancing films such as 8 1/2, Amarcord, and La Dolce Vita, Rota provided sweeping string arrangements alongside his own brand of lightly swinging small combo jazz. Even when removed from its original context and heard in the form of brief, isolated cues, Rota's music retains its singular presence as it alternates between romantic, anxious, carefree, and sentimental moods.

Remember that cousin you always hated as a kid? He was out winning football games, spelling bees, and building five-room treehouses while you just tried to figure out how to put your Micronauts together. Besides releasing a never-ending string of easy listening and jazz piano albums, Legrand's won Academy Awards for both his film scores and his own songs (he's probably written most of the modern jazz standards of the rock age). If that wasn't enough, Legrand is also a whiz at the piano, be it jazz or classical. Thankfully, he hasn't been pictured in Paris Match cuddling up poolside to a sunbathing Princess Stephanie or we'd really have to hate him. Cousin Legrand is one talented wee bugger and an international treasure.

A film director can always rely on Gabriel Yared to compose an original, compelling score that complements both story and character. Jean-Luc Godard broke him into movies in 1979, and the international success of Betty Blue (1986) led to his hopping back and forth between Continental, British and American films ever since. Like Jerry Goldsmith, he has a keen understanding of jazz as well as classical music, and can give something a personal stamp even when he borrows from another composer's style (e.g., his work on The Talented Mr. Ripley, in which Yared combined Hitchcock with Cool Jazz). He has been awarded many international film prizes, and he even scored an Academy Award for The English Patient.

As both a pianist and composer, Lalo Schifrin has made an indelible mark on twentieth century music. He got his start in New York playing with Dizzy Gillespie's quintet in the early 1960s, but soon moved on to front his own Bossa Nova trio. Finally, he dove into the lucrative field of Film Soundtracks, becoming one of the most prolific film composers in history. Schifrin is responsible for the world's single most famous tune in five/four: the theme from Mission: Impossible has set the standard for catchy, compelling film soundtracks, and of course, inspired countless college marching bands. His non-soundtrack work consists of elegantly orchestrated Third Stream compositions, which bridge the gaps between jazz, Afro-Brazilian rhythm, and modern classical orchestration. Few composers can boast Schifrin's gift for setting a mood, whether it be suspense, romance, terror, or exaltation.

An award-winning Polish composer who has been active since the early 1980s, Zbigniew Preisner creates scores for the big screen that, while possessing a dramatic life all their own, complement moving images wonderfully. Sometimes employing a full orchestra, and at other times a small ensemble, his music sets a distinctive and entrancing tone that brings together elements of modern classical, Eastern European folk music, and atmospheric -- albeit un-electronic -- Ambient. Percussion clashes over stirring string passages as massive themes build with unbelievable intensity. Best known for his work on such foreign successes as Europa, Europa and Trois Couleurs: Rouge, Preisner has also worked with directors such as Louis Malle and Hector Babenco (noted Brazilian director of Kiss of the Spider Woman).
