Undoubtedly one of the most skilled, prolific and imitated film composers in history. His spaghetti western themes from the 1960s have become so ingrained in popular culture that one need only strike an outlaw pose before someone in the room starts whistling the theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Though most often identified for the grand, heroic gestures of this period, he certainly did not limit himself to this style. From the eerie electronics of The Thing to the cross-cultural orchestration of The Mission, Morricone has shown himself capable of an absolutely remarkable breadth of expression. His forays outside of film music, including trumpet work in seminal improvisation ensemble Nuova Consonanza as well as numerous Avant-Garde and experimental compositions, further entrench his place among this century's most fascinating and important composers.

Academy Award-winning film composer began his career scoring Roger Corman's productions in the 1970s. While Humanoids From the Deep and Battle Beyond the Stars are fun and all, Horner soon went on to much bigger things -- the '80s found the composer to be a very hot commodity indeed. His scores to Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan and Aliens were huge successes, showcasing his bombastic dramatic sense and epic, sweeping style. Recent years have brought Braveheart as well as his most well-known score to date, Titanic. Critics often bash him for his notorious tendency to borrow from past works, something he does more than even, perhaps, John Williams. Originality aside, however, Horner's music has a knack for keeping the audience teetering on the edge of their seats, and that's something no one can complain about.

Randy "short people got no reason to live" Newman is a household name. No doubt about it. But did you know that darn near every member of his family has achieved a considerable amount of success in show biz? In fact, over the last 10 to 15 years film score composer Thomas Montgomery Newman has probably worked on more A-list blockbusters than Cousin Randy. A graduate of Yale University, Newman headed for Hollywood in the early '80s. His first scores, including those for Less Than Zero and The Lost Boys, were primarily electronic. He started employing more standard orchestration in the '90s, and with the change came a long string of mega-hits, including but in no way limited to The Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, Scent of a Woman, Erin Brockovich, Finding Nemo, The Good German and WALL-E. Newman has also plied his trade to television, most notably Six Feet Under and Angels in America. Much of his work post-Shawshank sees the composer filtering traditional orchestral music through the unconventional: world music-inspired percussion, ambient minimalism and so on. To date, Newman has won both Emmys and Grammys, but no Oscars, although he's been nominated eight times.

Mark Isham's versatility has earned him a place as one of Hollywood's finest film composers, as well as keeper of the Cool Jazz flame. He plays trumpet in the muted, introspective style of '50s-era Miles Davis, he's been an innovator in the use of electronics in jazz, and he's handled arrangements for cult stars Scott Walker and David Sylvian. His straight jazz, Chamber Music, or electronica-based soundtracks are excellent, and he has forged working relationships with such iconoclastic directors as Alan Rudolph, Robert Redford, Carroll Ballard, and Robert Altman. For jazz buffs, Isham is a top improviser and a first rate tunesmith (a rare combination -- refer to Gerry Mulligan and Horace Silver). During live performances, his tunes often depart wildly from their recorded versions, yet he never loses his West Coast cool.

Alfred Hitchcock had Bernard Herrmann. David Lynch has Angelo Badalamenti to match haunting synth-driven scores to vivid, eccentric images. Badalamenti is one of the few Hollywood composers allowed to use his signature style in project after project. It did take him decades to receive that freedom, but his carte blanche arrived when Lynch tapped him to do the score for Blue Velvet and the Twin Peaks TV series. From there, Badalamenti has contributed lushly melodic themes to romantic comedy's such as Cousins and bleak Electro freak-outs for intelligent suspense with Arlington Road. He has also successfully branched into pop albums, working with the Pet Shop Boys, Marianne Faithfull, and Twin Peaks chanteuse Julee Cruise. But above all else, the working relationship with Lynch continues and Badalamenti's beautiful Americana score for The Straight Story was as heartfelt as the movie.

As both a pianist and composer, Lalo Schifrin has made an indelible mark on twentieth century music. He got his start in New York playing with Dizzy Gillespie's quintet in the early 1960s, but soon moved on to front his own Bossa Nova trio. Finally, he dove into the lucrative field of Film Soundtracks, becoming one of the most prolific film composers in history. Schifrin is responsible for the world's single most famous tune in five/four: the theme from Mission: Impossible has set the standard for catchy, compelling film soundtracks, and of course, inspired countless college marching bands. His non-soundtrack work consists of elegantly orchestrated Third Stream compositions, which bridge the gaps between jazz, Afro-Brazilian rhythm, and modern classical orchestration. Few composers can boast Schifrin's gift for setting a mood, whether it be suspense, romance, terror, or exaltation.

A film director can always rely on Gabriel Yared to compose an original, compelling score that complements both story and character. Jean-Luc Godard broke him into movies in 1979, and the international success of Betty Blue (1986) led to his hopping back and forth between Continental, British and American films ever since. Like Jerry Goldsmith, he has a keen understanding of jazz as well as classical music, and can give something a personal stamp even when he borrows from another composer's style (e.g., his work on The Talented Mr. Ripley, in which Yared combined Hitchcock with Cool Jazz). He has been awarded many international film prizes, and he even scored an Academy Award for The English Patient.

Giorgio Moroder's exalted legacy is untouchable: his career has left an indelible stamp on dance music's history. His rhythms sashay like a runway model, progressing with noble elegance and cloaked in decadently lush orchestrations of shimmering electronics and acoustic symphonies that overflow with ecstasy. Unflinching diva vocals weave soulful words through a labyrinth of emotions. These anthems from the 1970s still resonate through today's progressive trance with their perfect mix of deep grooves, and sweet instrumentations that rise like champagne bubbles in a mimosa. When he hit Hollywood with his soundtrack and theme song productions, he sculpted eerie atmospheres of urban tensions and slight futurist paranoia. Though his career has had many ups and downs (compare "I Feel Love" with the soundtrack to D.C. Cab), when he is at his best, his tracks attain musical and emotional perfection.

Producer, label head, synth player, and guitarist Neil Norman is best known to the listening public (or at least portions of it) for his arrangements of sci-fi and outer-space related soundtrack music. His Greatest Science Fiction Hits series, for example, includes reworkings of themes from Dr. Who, Star Wars, The Twilight Zone, War of the Worlds, and many other films. Tracks range from spooky synth-scapes to guitar-driven space boogies. Then there are his numerous Star Trek-related efforts which include not only reworkings of music from the many films and TV show spin-offs, but also a full album's worth of sound effects that are bound to come in handy for the devoted Trekkie.

Like his sometime lyricist, Johnny Mercer, Warren wanted a career writing for Broadway shows. They didn't want him, but Broadway's loss was Hollywood's gain. One of the best, Warren brought jazz rhythms and hooks to movie songs. Such standards as "The Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "September in the Rain," and "42nd Street" are only a few of the notches on his belt.

Though Goblin are best known for their soundtracks to Dario Argento's horror films, they have produced a broad spectrum of sounds. Goblin's founding members (including Argento himself) had performed music together, but they formed Goblin in 1975 to provide the chilling, unforgettable Progressive twists and turns around the soundtrack to Argento's Profondo Rosso. They continued as a band, creating epic rock sojourns and scoring suspense and tension on celluloid (Suspiria, Tenebre, Martin). As time passed, they approached a more radio-ready sound that was patently '80s pop, while maintaining solid roots in Prog.

Most people are going to know Steward Copeland as the man with the sticks in the Police, but he has done a lot more than sit on the sidelines, waiting for Sting to go broke. Part of the reason the Police were never truly acknowledged as a proper Punk or New Wave act is Copeland's technically proficient drumming. A truly amazing percussionist, Copeland spent time with the Progressive Rock outfit Curved Air before forming the Police with Andy Summers. His approach has always seemed to walk the line between cerebral and jungle groove. Drum tech guys melt watching him play, but he's not so technical as to alienate the lonesome Joe who just likes to dance. His natural progression towards Film Scores began as the Police disintegrated in the early '80s and by the end of that decade, he had formed another group, Animal Logic, with bass wizard Stanley Clarke. Although that group has since disbanded, Copeland continues scoring and recording -- even writing for Opera and Ballet.
