British soul-pop chanteuse Adele (nee Adele Laurie Blue Adkins) is a stunning young talent with a huge voice. After she recorded a few songs, a friend set up a MySpace page for her in early 2005; record execs discovered her there in their hunt for the "next Lily Allen." After signing to XL, she suffered from a terribly ill-timed case of writer's block -- that is until she fell in and out of love. A breakup opened the floodgates of emotion and creativity, resulting in her debut album 19. Inspired by great soul dames like Etta James and Billie Holiday and other singers such as Bjork, Jeff Buckley, Dusty Springfield and Jill Scott, Adele's sense of staggering, heartbreaking honesty and artistry are evidence of her superwoman resilience and everywoman experiences.

If you like your chanteuses liberally doused in Chartreuse, Amy Winehouse is someone to raise a salutatory snifter to. As renowned for her boozing exploits and plunging dress sizes as for her marked musical abilities, the Londoner has risen to prominence on the back of gritty, often bleak autobiographical work. Winehouse readily admits that she writes from direct experience, and with songs that revolve around doomed relationships ("Stronger than Me"), drink ("Rehab") and recreational drugs ("Addicted"), you soon get the picture. But that aside, it's Winehouse's voice -- which saw her welcomed with open arms by Britain's two premier performance schools -- that forms the foundation of her appeal. By turns as knowing and vulnerable as Billie Holiday's and as streetwise as Ms Dynamite's, it reflects her fluctuating musical fixations (jazz, hip-hop and latterly Motown) and is a perfect tool to deliver her wry and affecting observations on the pratfalls and pain inherent in the pursuit of love. As Winehouse puts it: "I told you I was trouble/ You know that I'm no good" ("You Know I'm No Good").

When little Aimee Anne Duffy's father cued up a VHS tape with archaic episodes of the Brit music showcase program Ready Steady Go!, the grainy performances of the Beatles and Stones left an indelible impression. By the time she was 15, she was singing in bands herself, and at 23 she had truncated her name, buddied up to Suede guitarist Bernard Butler and signed to A&M. She instantly captured the manic adoration of the British media, who heralded the Welsh singer as the most recent in a line of playful, soul-inspired pop singers like Amy Winehouse. Her music certainly hitches itself to the Winehouse wagon with its ice-cold '60s grooves and Dusty Springfield influence, but Duffy's squeaky-clean image makes her a curious foil.

Hailing from Charlotte, N.C., Anthony Hamilton began singing in church and local talent shows before moving to New York in the early 1990s and signing with Uptown Records. After the label folded, he bounced to MCA and released his debut album, XTC, in 1996. Sporting a classic vocal style different from the neo-soul crooners who were then coming into vogue, the LP got good reviews but failed to generate much hype. Hamilton soon started writing songs for artists like Donell Jones, toured with D'Angelo and sang on records by Eve and Tupac, among others. He finally hit the big-time in 2002 after teaming up with Nappy Roots for their single "Po' Folks" and earning a Grammy nomination in the process. Hamilton then hooked up with Jermaine Dupri, who signed him to So So Def and produced Comin' From Where I'm From in 2003. A steady stream of records followed, including the archival collections Soulife and Southern Comfort, and 2008's The Point of It All.

Growing up in England on a steady diet of classic American soul, it wasn't long before Joss Stone realized she had the same gutsy, impassioned vocal style as many of her idols. Leaving home at 16, she landed in New York and auditioned for S-Curve Records, which quickly signed her. The British teen headed into a Miami studio with Southern soul stalwart Betty Wright, who produced/mentored/cajoled Stone's sessions to fruition. Stone's debut, the aptly titled Soul Sessions, was released in late 2003 to much critical praise. Her breakthrough single, a stunning version of the White Stripes' "Fell in Love With a Girl" (except she called it "Fell in Love With a Boy") helped her cultivate an audience and broadened her fan base. Stone's sophomore album, Mind, Body & Soul, was released in September 2004.

Sharon Jones may owe her current career to, of all things, crate-diggers. The record collectors who throng church sales in search of rare soul singles have now started helping resurrect the careers of those artists. Jones was never a hit singer -- told that she was too dark-skinned, too short and too old to find fame, she sang mainly in church choirs and on the odd album, often uncredited or credited as LaFaye Jones. Jones maintained faith in her talent, though she had to work security guard jobs to survive. In 1999 she was dating a sax player who played with the Desco Records house band when he recommended her to sing backup on a track. Desco was so impressed they cut several more singles with her. The label dissolved, but out of its ashes rose Daptone Records, with a pre-Parliament funk house band that immediately tapped Jones to become the frontwoman. Recording analog and (for the most part) live, the Dap-Kings recordings sound like they could have been made in the late '60s, but Jones' high-octane voice is timeless. With no radio support, the band has toured the world and gained fans on every continent. The Dap-Kings moonlighted in 2007 as Amy Winehouse's backing band.

New York City figures heavily in the history of soul music. In the 1960s, Atlantic Records -- with offices towering above West 52nd Street -- became home to Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding, while uptown in Harlem, young performers like Diana Ross and James Brown were getting up to do their thing at the Apollo Theater. The Budos Band is an extension of these roots. Theirs is a gritty, almost psychedelic dance sound that combines a love for soul music of the '60s, as can also be heard in Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, with a study in Fela Kuti's Afrobeat records of the following decade. The Budos Band was released by the retro-soul imprint Daptone in 2006 and drew comparisons to fellow New Yorkers the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra; The Budos Band II came fast on its heals one year later.

With a name like Holmes you're thinking, "They better be good." They are. The Holmes Brothers blend Blues Rock with three-part Gospel harmonies to create something that's extremely difficult to listen to standing still. The Brothers are a power trio made up of Wendell and Sherman Holmes, as well as their friend Popsy Dixon singing falsettos and beating the skins with moving and rhythmic precision. They can take an old Southern Church standard and make it sound sinful in it's aural indulgence. The Brothers are festival favorites and have been recording music since 1989.

If you find the Brand New Heavies sound too retro and Portishead too frigid, check out Gretchen Lieberum. Her sultry '70s Soul-Jazz voice fronts subdued, moody jazz that forgoes both the frost and frivolity in favor of straight-ahead emotion. Lieberum comes across like Carmel fronting Morcheeba. Sade's continued silence has left a vacuum that this LA based singer could fill.

Chicago band Sonia Dada's relentless tour schedule, their amalgam of jazz, rock, Soul, blues, and Gospel sound, and their exemplary musicianship have closely aligned them with the H.O.R.D.E./Jam Rock scene. The band's sound is built around three lead vocalists who sing in close harmony. The band has essentially carved its own sonic niche by taking the concept of the three singers, whose presentation comes from the tradition of Soul and Motown vocal groups, and grafting it onto a rock band with horns and Jam Rock trappings.

Neo-soulster Ricky Fante has the sort of warm, powdered sugary voice that makes your knees melt when you hear it. The Washington, D.C., native was influenced by his parents' substantial music collection growing up and could frequently be found singing Stevie Wonder and Elvis Presley classics on the street corners of his neighborhood. Fante joined his church's gospel choir while in his teens and honed his substantial singing skills until he graduated from high school. Upon graduation, Fante enlisted in the Marines and served his country for four years. Once his tour of duty was over, Fante headed to college in Los Angeles. In between classes, he entered singing contests and worked on getting a deal any way he could. His persistence eventually paid off, and he was signed to a small, independent label. In 2001, Fante was offered a developmental deal with Virgin Records, and partnered with Norah Jones' collaborator, Jesse Harris. Eventually, these songs would become the backbone of Fante's stirring 2004 debut, Rewind.

Twenty-one-year-old Emily King sounds surprisingly more experienced than her age -- which is not so surprising, given that she (a) is the daughter of two jazz musicians (with whom she started performing at age four) and (b) started her career at age 16 (which, in King's opinion, was already much too late). She got her G.E.D., wrote a scathingly soulful song about capitalist pigs ("Business Man") on her guitar and started gigging at folk-oriented venues like CBGB's Gallery. Then she turned 17. As she got older, she added hip-hop influences to her mix of jazz, soul, folk and rock and started working with producer Chucky Thompson of Bad Boy Entertainment. King signed with J Records and released her debut album in 2007.

New Orleans singer Adams' recording career ran from 1959 until his untimely death in 1998. Like so many Soul and R&B singers, he started out singing Gospel music. His first record was produced by Mac Rebennack (aka Dr. John), and throughout the '60s he hit the R&B charts a number of times with his smooth sound and amazingly broad range. Adams made nine albums for Rounder Records starting in the 1980s: he did many of these with his longtime bandleader, guitarist Walter "Wolfman" Washington. These records encompassed everything from jazz and string-laden vocal pop to the grittiest Soul and blues. Adams' reputation among his peers unfortunately exceeded his general popularity in the States, but he was always a big star in New Orleans and abroad. He was felled by cancer at the age of sixty-six.

To say that the Soul Investigators are at the forefront of Finland funk isn't saying that much, but the group has managed to carve out a niche for themselves among the international retro soul movement. Of course, it doesn't hurt their cause that they've teamed up with New York soul chanteuse Nicole Willis, whose resume includes collaborations with Curtis Mayfield and the Brand New Heavies as well as a stint as the third member of influential early-'90s funk electronic group Dee-Lite. Willis and the Soul Investigators' first full-length, Keep Reachin' Up, was released in Europe in 2006 (2007 in the U.S.) to near universal acclaim. U.K. tastemaker Gilles Peterson named lead-off single "Feeling Free" his song of the year.

Adriana Evans is one of the shining lights of the "back to soul" movement. The daughter of San Francisco jazz singer Maria Stallings, who worked with Cal Tjader and Count Basie, Evans is a sophisticated singer who understands the feel of '70s jazzy Soul and combines that understanding with deft hip-hop production. Evans is in complete control of her craft, and with proper exposure she should be one of the breakout stars of the decade.

A former guitarist for Joe Tex's band, Wesley Curley Clark has established himself as the seasoned veteran of Austin, Tex.'s constantly flourishing blues community. His extraordinary style of Texas Blues boasts fretboard chops and licks that go down with the same deliciously greasy gusto of the city's many fine BBQ dining establishments. Fans of Clark usually tend to go for his more organic mix of Texas Blues, in which he adds multicultural elements to his proven formula of Tex Mex instrumentation, grinding organs, and even a sublime pinch of that Cajun flavor. His acclaimed 1994 album Heart of Gold is an unblemished example of his unique style.

Christion are the only modern-day coolies with enough game to be invited to the Player's Ball, and the only new kids who could out-mack Goldie and earn the title SuperDuperFly. Without ignoring the date on today's calendar, Christion roll back the pages to the era of blaxploitation films, Curtis Mayfield, mellow Soul and Marvin Gaye. While not getting lost in the hazy retro reminiscing about it all, they nonetheless have the rare ability to fill songs with smoothed-out falsettos, keyboards masquerading as strings, weighty bass that drops and settles like sediment, and floating wahs that echo until they fade. When you start to worry that the whole thing's got its head screwed on backwards and is myopically staring at the past, they give you a blast from the present with a dusting of here-and-now hip-hop and Neo-Soul.

The Bellrays are one of the last real rock 'n' roll bands on planet Earth. Imagine a young Tina Turner kickin' out the jams with MC5 and you have just scratched the surface of what this wonderfully anachronistic outfit sounds like. Their innovative Garage/Gospel and Soul/Punk puts every other helmet haircut band with black bellbottoms and an infatuation with the Motor City to shame. Singer Lisa Kekaula takes back what many subversive East Coast bands have bastardized with her stellar vocal performances on each song. She can wail and belt out her soul as if Motown's on fire. Amazingly constructed works with clever arrangements, bionic guitar playing, and a rhythm section that seems completely possessed at times. The freakbeat soul of the Bellrays will make you want to steal a car and hit the road with the cruise control on.

Spanky Wilson is an American soul singer who was born in Philadelphia and began her career in the mid-'60s. She called Pittsburgh her home, where she got her start with small club dates and on a handful of big band recordings. Driven by her career, she moved to Los Angeles, where she lived until relocating to Paris in the mid-'80s. Though her career has included performances with jazz, funk and soul luminaries including Stanley Turrentine, Jimmy Smith, Sammy Davis Jr., and Marvin Gaye, she was mostly known for her funky (and highly valuable) 45s. That is until 2006 when she enjoyed a resurgence with the release of I'm Thankful recorded with Will Holland and the Quantic Soul Orchestra.

Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, Andreus is a singer/songwriter/musician/producer clearly influenced by legendary soul artists of the past, especially Curtis Mayfield, whose trademark falsetto style can be heard throughout Andreus' work. His first album, Street Troubadour was released in 2003, a strong mix of exceptional musicianship and emotional vocalism.

Remember the cover for Bill Withers' Greatest Hits? It pictured a brandy decanter, a rose, handmade chocolates, and all the other accoutrements of upscale, urban love. Well, Monet sound like that record cover -- their mix of classic soul and jazz acts as romantic melancholia. It's like having Sade take over Morcheeba.

When Hammer was at his peak, Special Generation were there to back him up, crooning old soul classics over which the genie-pants-clad, dancing machine would spin his rhymes. By the early '90s, they were also releasing solo efforts, although their most visible project remained the vocal backdrop they provided on Hammer's "Have You Seen Her?" Not much had been heard from them since, until their apperance on club diva Angelina's most recent (and most successful) release.
