A vocal group with a history in Doo-Wop, the Cleveland-based O'Jays actually embodied the Philly sound in the ‘70s. Characterized by a metronomic groove, lavish strings and slick production courtesy of songwriting / producing team Gamble & Huff, The O'Jays and other artists on the Philly International label invented the “slow jam.” Hits like “Love Train” showed their gift for three-part harmonies and lightweight social messages.

If you are in the mood for romance, just lay a Teddy Pendergrass platter on the turntable and stand back while the lights dim, the champagne uncorks and the couch unfolds. Pendergrass' silky Philly Soul vocal style helped land a multitude of 1970s hits, such as "If You Don't Know Me By Now," for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes before he took off for a successful solo career in 1978. He rode the top of the charts until a car accident left him wheelchair-bound in 1982. Undaunted, he quickly rebounded, and while he wasn't as big on the pop scene, he remains a giant in the world of R&B. His songs were used to capture the elusive nature of love in Alan Rudolph's 1984 cult film Choose Me.

It's good to have a mega hit but Lou Rawls has been too firmly associated with "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" over the years. Yes, it's a great Philly Soul number, but Chicago's own Lou Rawls has done much in a long, illustrious career. He excelled at gospel with Sam Cooke, at jazz with Les McCann and Benny Carter, and with the blues-drenched jazz 'n' soul on his own R&B hits. It took a serious car accident and a short coma to get Rawls to throw caution to the wind and try for a solo career and he immediately caught the attention of musicians in the early 1960s. His earliest Capitol recordings rank among his best but Rawls didn't catch on with the public until 1966's incendairy Live!, which contained his famed pre-song "raps" which helped set the stage for Isaac Hayes, Gil Scott-Heron and Barry White. Rawls classics at the time included "Black and Blue" and "Dead End Street" which helped define the civil rights movement but as Rawls got increasingly popular he helped light up dance floors and bedrooms with some of the tastiest Philly Soul of the 1970s. In 1989 Rawls returned to recording top shelf blues and jazz material, first with Blue Note, then with his own label. While his albums can contain uneven material, Rawls is justly famous for his searing live show and his older material is newly popular with British youth. Rawls passed away from cancer in 2006.

Originally founded by Philly pianist/doo wop singer Harold Melvin in 1954, The Blue Notes went through a series of under-appreciated singles and multiple lineup changes before they established their own sound. The group's first hit, "My Hero," graced the charts in 1960, but it would be five years before they scored another. Things picked up dramatically in 1970, when their drummer Teddy Pendergrass became the lead singer, which led to a deal with Gamble & Huff's famed soul label, Philadelphia International. With the legendary songwriter/producers, the group soon became one of the era's most popular and successful outfits, releasing classic romantically-minded singles like "If You Don't Know Me By Now" and "Tell the World How I Fell About ‘Cha Baby." Their lush instrumentation, smooth balladry, and stylish image combined to make them chart-topping superstars. By 1976, Pendergrass left the band over billing disputes and embarked on a solo career. Meanwhile, Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, with David Ebbo as replacement singer, bounced over to ABC Records and released their last substantial hit, Reaching for the World. Two more albums came out in the early eighties, but they never again reached the commercial success of their heyday.

Maze brought the Philly soul sound out to San Francisco in the mid-1970s and has never looked back. Their relaxed grooves and good moods have survived everything from disco to hip-hop without many stylistic changes. Their blueprint has always been Marvin Gaye's early- '70s recordings with that quiet intensity and sophisticated funk. Gaye himself was big booster and Maze's Frankie Beverly keeps his spirit alive.

"La La Means I Love You" and "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)" may be their biggest hits, but just about anything the Delfonics have recorded is filled with the same smooth-edged sounds that bridged the gap between '60s Soul and '80s Quiet Storm and R&B. The Delfonics helped define what became the Philly sound, working hand in hand with producer Thom Bell. Bell (along with sometime cohorts Gamble & Huff) took the edge off their highly arranged Soul hits, packaging them for mass audiences eager to hear sweet, melodic tunes. But it wouldn't have worked if it weren't for the pristine voices of brothers William and Wilbert Hart, as well as that of Randy Cain (who was later replaced by Major Harris).

People who believe that soul singers should only sound like demonic preachers on fire should not be allowed to your party. Soul can be as uptown and sophisticated as Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye reciting lines from Shakespeare and soul legend Jerry Butler belongs in their distinguished company. It ain't for nothing that they call Butler "the Ice Man" - - he is one of the coolest classic Soul balladeers of all time. Butler started out fronting Curtis Mayfield's Impressions before breaking with such mega hits as "He Will Break Your Heart" and "Find Another Girl." Butler keeps perfect control over his voice and heightens dramatic impact by letting little shifts betray oceans of emotion (a trait closer to Sinatra or Nat Cole than to James Brown). While Butler scores on ballads and classic pop tunes, uptempo rave ups on such albums as Ice On Ice (1970) prove that he can get your feet moving just as well as get your blood pumping. Butler remains a marvelous singer but now dedicates much of his energies to political life in his home town of Chicago.

After getting his start on radio as a child, Philadelphia soul singer Billy Paul performed with legends like Coltrane and Charlie Parker in the 1950s and '60s. He recorded as part of a trio for many years, and began releasing solo albums in 1970. He hit the big time with his third album, 360 Degrees of Billy Paul, which spawned the hugely successful single "Me and Mrs. Jones." He continued to release excellent material throughout the '70s, with help from Philly songwriting/production gurus Gamble and Huff. Blurring the lines between jazz, funk, blues and R&B (and later disco), his albums continued to sell well, earning him an international fan base and multiple Grammys. His output slowed in the '80s, and he announced his retirement in 1989. Since then, he has reemerged and toured extensively around the world. He released the concert album Live: World Tour in 2000, and in 2003 he received $500,000 in unpaid royalties for "Me and Mrs. Jones."
