One of the premier soul groups of the 1970s, Earth Wind & Fire fused a deep knowledge of the African-American musical tradition with an uplifting, spiritual idealism. To sum up the breadth of their sound is impossible, simply because the group's versatility was awe-inspiring. They played powerhouse Funk anthems, Latin-inflected R&B grooves, shimmering Pop-Soul, and ballads that tugged the heartstrings while sending the spirit soaring across the sky. Their impeccable horn harmonies rivaled the JB's (James Brown's backing band) while Johnny Graham's sweet R&B stylings conveyed worlds of emotion. Bandleader, drummer, and premier songwriter Maurice White infused the music with African rhythm, often featuring the kalimba, or thumb-piano, while the band brought jazz and Latin polyrhythms to the heart of deep funk territory. And their three distinctive vocalists inspired near-religious adoration: Philip Bailey's soaring falsetto, Maurice White's soulful growl, and Jessica Cleaves' natural, unadorned alto. This is music for the mind, the body, and the soul.

The Bee Gees made whiney falsetto hip, wide polyester collars the height of high-rolling fashion, and defined cool for an entire generation. A '70s supergroup who actually began as a brothers act in 1959, the Bee Gees have proven remarkably versatile throughout their long career, unafraid to experiment with everything from country to R&B to straight pop balladry. They scored a number of hits during the 1960s and early '70s with shimmering hits like "I've Got to Get a Message to You" and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart." Some of the Bee Gees' most memorable tracks stemmed from the height of the disco era, culminating in 1977's Saturday Night Fever soundtrack with tunes like "Night Fever," "How Deep is Your Love," and of course, "Stayin' Alive." Lush harmonies, symphonic arrangements, and a tendency to reinvent themselves when the going gets tough have made this band one of the longest-running pop acts around.

An icon of the disco era, Barry White turned a behind the scenes career in the music idustry into a highly succesful career as a performer and hitmaker. Strip away the lush strings and you'll see that White followed in the footsteps of such creamy R&B baritones as Lou Rawls, Isaac Hayes, and even the politically charged Gil Scott Heron. Not really a singer, White used his voice well, employing pillow talk interludes like an amorous Orson Welles doused in Brut 33. Barry White used a heady brew of disco sheen and his bedroom voice to score hit after hit in the '70s. His "Love's Theme" in 1974 pretty much sums up White's mojo, but the hits kept coming until 1979 (perhaps corresponding to the moral backlash against the sexual revolution?). But even chaste monks can't help but be tickled by Barry White, who passed away on July 4, 2003

Thanks in part to a voice that could compete with Dionne Warwick on the level of pop appeal -- and let's not forget Berry Gordy's loving adoration for her -- Diana Ross not only became the lead singer of the Supremes, she became the quintessential image of the band in the public eye. What might have been had she remained part of the Supremes' backing vocal section will never be known, but the end result of Ross' being placed center stage was a later ascent to uber-diva as a solo artist. Within a year of taking leave of the Supremes in 1969, Ross already had a No. 1 song; within two years, she'd starred in a movie (Lady Sings The Blues) and secured an Academy Award nomination. Not bad for an acting novice and singer on her own for the first time. Over the years, Diana Ross has continued to earn film roles, chart placements, and the undying respect and admiration of drag queens the world over.

It seemed like a dubious honor at the time, but Donna Summer had the talent and charisma to climb to the top of the Disco heap. Considering that Disco was a style which showcased a producer's sound and faceless studio skill, the fact that Summer became a household name says a great deal about the power of her personality. Her toothy, ponyish beauty did have the sequencer-mad Giorgio Moroder behind it, and together they came up with the 1975 stunner "Love To Love You Baby." The song became more than a major Disco hit -- it helped give birth to the modern electronica movement. Summer's seemingly endless stream of supple hit singles dried up when Disco choked on its own dust in the early 1980s. Though she still possesses a strong voice and looks far better than many other performers on the current Dance Pop and R&B scenes, Summer's various comeback attempts have all fallen flat in the age of Madonna. If you want to see one of the worst documents of the Disco era, seek out Summer's acting debut in Thank God It's Friday.

Rivaled only by the O'Jays, the Spinners held a monopoly on easy, sophisticated soul during the 1970s. After being dropped by Motown for lackluster sales (despite the perennially popular "It's a Shame"), they signed to Atlantic where they had the last laugh, spawning hit after hit: "Could It Be I'm Fallin' in Love," "I'll Be Around," "Mighty Love," "Ghetto Child," "Games People Play," "Then Came You," and "The Rubberband Man." Phillipe Wynne's graceful multifaceted falsetto naturally leant itself to their bedroom-eyed Philly Soul. The Spinners carried the torch for crisp, classy Soul music thought to have faded with the 1960s.

A truly international affair, Heatwave came together in the mid-1970s, founded by American brothers Keith and Johnnie Wilder who were living in Germany. They split for the UK to team up with Rod Temperton, and soon drafted a Czech drummer, Spanish bassist and two more American guitarists. They played relentlessly all over England, perfecting a unique sound steeped in soul and funk, easily danceable, but not nearly as cheesy as most disco. Their debut LP Too Hot To Handle was produced by Bobby Blue and released in 1977, spawning three hits, including the hugely popular "Boogie Nights." The group's second album Central Heating came out the next year, and furthered their hit-maker status thanks to singles like "Mind Blowing Decisions" and "The Groove Line." Though their career was soaring, problems within the group threatened to tear them apart. Some members were leaving the band, Rod Temperton started writing hits for other artists (including Michael Jackson during his classic Off The Wall and Thriller period), and their bassist was nearly killed in a car wreck. With a few new faces, Heatwave regrouped for their third record Hot Property. Though still a great album, it failed to produce any major hits. After more line-up changes and another near fatal auto accident, they released Candles and Current in '81 and '82 respectively, but by now the group was a shell of its former self. An attempted comeback in 1989 also floundered. Regardless, Heatwave are fondly remembered for their first several LPs and their effortlessly soulful classic songs. They put out a live album in 1997 and remain extremely popular on classic funk and R&B radio.

The Pointer Sisters started out in the '70s as the quartet of Ruth, Anita, Bonnie and June, rocking funky rhythms and somewhat risque material. As the decade matured (or graduated to hangover phase), Bonnie dropped out of the group and the Sisters edged towards pop, covering Bruce Springsteen's "Fire" and meeting with considerable popular kudos. "He's So Shy," "Slow Hand" and "Jump" followed. While the move to pop certainly had its tradeoffs, tracks like "He's So Shy" were pop triumphs with at least a hint of depth and several leg-warmers' worth of fun. By the time "Jump" came around in 1984, the simplistic songwriting -- while popular -- was getting a little hard to sustain. The sisters continued touring into the millennium, though, enjoying major popularity -- especially in Europe -- on the classic soul and R&B package-tour circuit. On April 11, 2006, June Pointer died of cancer in Santa Monica, California, and the Sisters went on indefinite hiatus.

Blige covered) and the Stylistics-reminiscent "I Wanna Get Next To You." And who could forget the "Holy-Crap!-Is-That-Rerun-Doing-The-Electric-Boogie?" of "Car Wash"? Disco queens and kings everywhere will rejoice that their computer speakers may now runneth over with sounds of the '70s.

Gaynor, a steel-throated R&B belter, helped kick-start the disco movement with "Never Can Say Goodbye" and the ever popular "I Will Survive." Hard times may have befallen most soul survivors, but Gaynor still releases an album from time to time and does well on the international club circuit. On a historical note, she is one of the first performers to release special remixed 12" singles to a dance-crazed public.

Chic embodied all the best of the vacuous but ritzy skyscraper-dwelling, cocaine-snorting, designer-jeans-wearing disco scene of the late 1970s. Their music was as sleek, sexy, streamlined and sophisticated as Brooke Shields rolling around in a pair of Calvin Kleins. Nile Rodgers' trendsetting rhythm guitar work provided the band's funky foundation -- his invigorating musicianship alone could get you moving. They had a string of super hits, starting with 1977's "Dance, Dance, Dance." Their song "Good Times" was the basis for the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight," and Chic were major players in the entire Disco movement. Rodgers and bassist Bernard Edwards produced acres of artists like Sister Sledge and Diana Ross, and when Disco died Rodgers moved on to producing hits for Debbie Harry, David Bowie and Madonna. If you like your dance music extra funky and gritty, check out 1999's Live at Budokan. It replaces their studio chill with enough heat to keep your joints juiced all night long.

Hailing from Pittsburgh, Wild Cherry were more of a rock/funk outfit, though they will always be synonymous with disco, thanks to their trademark party jam "Play That Funky Music." Released in 1976, the song hit No. 1 on both the pop and R&B charts, earning them a pair of platinum plaques, Billboard awards and Grammy nominations. Unfortunately, despite that song's enormous success, the group never had another hit. Four more albums followed, but nobody seemed to notice or care. Wild Cherry split up in 1979, though they live on through their lone smash, still a crowd favorite in clubs, weddings and parties to this day.

The Emotions were one of the finest female vocal groups of the 1970s and enjoyed a string of hits, including the No. 1 smash "Best of My Love." Their mid-to-late '70s sound was produced by Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire fame, but their edge goes back to their earlier, earthier Stax recordings, which kept the sophisticated Soul sound of the '60s alive. If all you know are their bigger hits, there's a whole mess of great music left for you to discover.

Although perhaps best known for their inclusion on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, Tavares consistently scored hits throughout the 1970s. The five Tavares brothers formed their group in 1964, signing to Capitol records almost a decade later. The quintet scored a number of R&B and pop hits in the early part of the '70s, including the first recorded version of "She's Gone," written by the then-unknown duo, Hall & Oates. The mid part of the 70s saw Tavares embrace the disco fad with hits such as "It Only Takes A Minute" and "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel," culminating with the aforementioned "More Than A Woman," a song written especially for them by the Bee Gees.

Campy is as campy does, and the Village People did it better than anyone else had even imagined possible in the late 1970s. The brainchild of Jacques Morali, the boys in the band were initially a novel concept -- a motley crew of stylized homosexual "types" (dressed in what's best described as same-sex drag) who would score big with the gay community and their straight and narrow counterparts. The shtick worked astonishingly well: none-the-wiser midwestern housewives (and their husbands) learned the words to "Y.M.C.A." as thoroughly as urbane gay men. When Disco faded, so did the Village People, and while they haven't had any comebacks on the charts, they've become cultural icons. Aside from crafting several Disco standards, the Village People should also be credited with giving Americans a reason to learn terms such as "leather queen," and teaching the clueless that a cowboy can be a "man's man" in several very different ways.

Although they'd had some minor success previously, this family unit came to prominence in the disco era, thanks to the production savvy of Chic's Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. Upon its release in 1979, "We Are Family" zoomed to number one on the R&B charts and peaked at number two on the pop charts. Although the sisters continue to release albums and do the odd tour, they've never matched the success they achieved at the height of the disco era.

A funk quintet out of England, Hot Chocolate are best known for their signature crossover hit, "You Sexy Thing." Flirting with straight rock as well as disco, they released eight albums between 1974 and 1983, and developed a large following in their native UK, but had a hard time really catching on in the States. The group would have one more gold single, "Every 1's A Winner" in 1978, but they faded into obscurity as the '80s progressed.

In its 16 years together, Labelle developed from a fairly conventional '60s girl group — replete with sequined gowns, bouffants, and polished choreography — into a band with a unique, space-queen look, an idealistic political consciousness, and an individual gospel-tinged, funky rock & roll sound. They began as Patti LaBelle and the Blue Belles, bringing together LaBelle and Cindy Birdsong from the Ordettes with Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash from the Del Capris. Their 1962 single "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman" became a Number 15 hit, followed by versions of "Danny Boy" (Number 76, 1964) and "You'll Never Walk Alone" (Number 34, 1964).

The Blue Belles became a trio in 1967 when Birdsong left to replace Florence Ballard in the Supremes. Although they were hugely popular at the Apollo Theatre and on the soul circuit, they were mismanaged. In 1970 Britisher Vicki Wickham (who knew the Blue Belles from their mid-'60s appearance on the English TV show Ready Steady Go, which she produced) became their manager, revamping their image and leading them toward more contemporary rock. She also encouraged Hendryx to contribute more of her own songs.

In 1971, after Wickham rechristened the group Labelle, it released an eponymous debut on Warner Bros. and toured the U.S. with the Who. That same year the band collaborated with Laura Nyro on Gonna Take a Miracle, a collection of '50s and '60s soul and doo-wop remakes. In 1973 Labelle, at a headline Bottom Line show, joined the glitter trend, debuting its soon-to-be-famous lamé space-cadet suits. In 1974 it became the first black act ever to play New York's Metropolitan Opera House; there it introduced what was to become its only million-selling hit, "Lady Marmalade" (Number One, 1975), a shouter about a Creole hooker. The single, written by Bob Crewe, Allen Toussaint, and Kenny Nolan, highlighted its Nightbirds LP, produced by Toussaint in New Orleans.

Since Hendryx and Patti LaBelle had basic musical differences, Labelle broke up in 1976. Sarah Dash played small clubs and began recording solo albums in 1979. She continues to work as a background singer for various artists, including Keith Richards, the Rolling Stones, LaBelle, and Hendryx. The three were reunited on "Release Yourself," from LaBelle's 1991 solo album Burnin'. Following a decade and a half of brief reunions and collaborations, the ladies of Labelle announced a full-scale reunion in 2008, with intentions to release an album and tour.

from The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll (Simon & Schuster, 2001)

This Philly band went through a number of name and line-up changes before emerging as the Trammps in the early 1970's. The band's first single was actually a cover of Judy Garland's "Zing Went the Strings of My Heart" -- a far cry from the jubilant, celebratory sound the band is associated with. What separated the Trammps from their disco contemporaries was their incorporation of the famous "Philadelphia soul sound" (made popular by bands like the Spinners and the Stylistics) into their highly produced dance music. Yes, it was disco. But it was disco with a soulful, R&B base -- a far cry from disco poster boys, the Brothers Gibb. You loved disco for the Trammps. You hated it because of the Bee Gees.

Phillips was a wonderful vocalist who moved from '50s R&B to '60s blues-drenched soul to '70s jazz. With the exception of her foray into Disco, she worked well in so many musical fields because her voice reflected a time when popular music was truly as diverse as her career.

The singer of such hits as "Love Come Down" and "Shame," King was one of the few 1970s Disco divas to prosper on the R&B and dance charts of the '80s. Although she owns a bubbly set of vocal chops, King's career didn't survive the '90s -- but she could probably make a comeback now that Neo-Soul artists are welcome in the age of rap.

Disco lives -- thrives, in fact -- in the work of Hercules and Love Affair, the New York outfit helmed by the red-haired wunderkind Andrew Butler. Dedicated to the golden days of club culture, the band combines elements of the early '80s -- electronic disco and Chicago house -- with melancholy riffs and atmospheres and clever songwriting full of subtle twists and turns. As a teenager, Butler began DJing in the leather bars of his hometown, Denver; by college, he was applying his talents to contemporary composition and conceptual art. But the dance bug still lurked within. When, after moving to New York, he discovered that its dancing days were all but over, he set about working to rectify that.

In 2007, Butler teamed up with DFA's Tim Goldsworthy to release the "Classique" single; the following year he returned with "Blind," an out-of-nowhere mind-melter featuring the voice of none other than Antony Hegarty, of Antony and the Johnsons. Shortly thereafter, Hercules and Love Affair released their eponymous debut album, with Antony's space-castrato voice the undeniable centerpiece on an album brimming with springy arpeggios, lugubrious bass lines and bright, brassy horns.

Music industry insider Patrice Rushen has done it all. She started out as a supremely gifted jazz pianist in the 1970s before having a string of shoulder-padded R&B hits like "Watch Out" and "Haven't You Heard" during the '80s. But the hits dried up around the same time that Rushen started doing a considerable amount of TV and movie work at the end of the decade. Her last few Smooth Jazz albums have been a real disappointment, and they find Rushen playing like a less funky Joe Sample. Her soundtrack work includes scoring the cult fave Without You I'm Nothing and the theme song to Men in Black. Rushen is fast becoming a Hollywood powerhouse, but her finest music is still contained on her first three Prestige albums.

Taking you back to the late '80s in true R&B style, Club Nouveau are responsible for such soulful chart-busting hits as "Rumors" and "Jealousy." Remembered for their smooth, radio-ready blend of Disco, Funk and urban, this Dance Pop-friendly collective dissolved during the early '90s.

Arthur Russell was an influential American musician, singer and composer originally from Oskaloosa, Iowa. He later lived on a Buddhist commune in San Francisco, where he befriended Allen Ginsberg, whose poetry readings Russell would accompany on cello. He also lived in New York City, where his career flourished but ended prematurely when he died of AIDS in 1992 at the age of 40. During the latter half of his life, he traveled within New York's burgeoning art, conceptual and dance music scenes, and he collaborated with luminary figures in the avant-garde, including Phillip Glass, Rhys Chatham and David Byrne. In 1980 Russell released a song called "Is It All Over My Face" under the name Loose Joints, a remix of which is considered an early influence on house music. He also released a disco track, "Kiss Me Again," under the name Dinosaur, and fronted a rock band, the Flying Hearts, which included Ernie Brooks of the Modern Lovers on bass. Russell wasn't widely known in his lifetime; his genius would only begin to be recognized post-mortem.

Archie Bell streamlined James Brown by polishing his R&B tunes like gleaming chrome Cadillac hubcaps. He only had one monster hit, but "Tighten Up" (1968) is the Citizen Kane of feel-good dance songs: perfection at 45 RPM. The Vietnam War sidelined Bell, but he bounced back by helping define the Philly Soul movement of the '70s.

San Francisco's own Sylvester brought his flamboyant personality to the Disco arena in the late '70s. He was rooted in Gospel, and, after fronting the all-transvestite Cockettes, he helped pioneer the popularity of synthesized dance music. His ecstatic choirboy cries were a cause for celebration in the gay community. A Disco Queen in every sense of the word, he proved to be a queer icon without resorting to caricature a la the Village People.
