With their early 1990s hit "Motownphilly," Boyz II Men assured their status as big-time chart-toppers, able to control the No. 1 spot for weeks at a time (often only to be replaced by another one of their singles). Their tight harmonies give a nod to the Doo-Wop artists of the 1950s, while crisp production assures a distinctly modern sound. They've had success with smoking R&B dance tracks, but their true talent lies in their rendering of syrupy romantic ballads that can drive just about anyone to tears. Their perfect A Cappella songs can melt your heart like butter, moving through open chords with exacting precision. Scores of weak imitations later, Boyz II Men continue to sell millions of records as they work with hot producers like Babyface and superstar singers such as Mariah Carey.

It's a testament to Jodeci's immense talent that two of its most prominent members, brothers K-Ci and Jo-Jo, have gone on to spectacular success as a duo. Most of the four-member band's hits owe their success to the group's church-trained voices, which gave them the pipes to sing to the heavens -- even if their lyrics have more devilish implications. In fact, their transition to secular music has gone remarkably well, with sexed-up songs filling out a good part of their repertoire, and not-for-radio raps taking up the slack between verses. Their most popular fare, however, has been plush ballads made to send listeners straight into each other's arms.

After the Osmonds, but before Backstreet Boys, New Edition were the cute boy band who made Bubblegum pop for adolescent girls in the '80s. Ralph Tresvant's prepubescent vocals were as cotton-candy sweet as a young Michael Jackson's, and similar enough to make early listeners think they were hearing a recently unearthed Jackson 5 demo. By the '90s, they had grown tired of their image as teenybopper pinups, and acquired a more mature New Jack Swing style. The group finally dedicated themselves to solo projects, resulting in successful careers for Bell Biv Devoe, Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant.

Formed in 1995, this R&B quartet comprised Jazz, Woody, Sisqo, and Nokio -- four friends who grew up together in Baltimore. Their self-titled '96 debut fused bedroom escapades with smooth vocals and non-threatening hip-hop beats, and blew up on the strength of their first single "Tell Me." They returned in '98 with Enter The Dru. The following year Sisqo went solo, releasing Unleash The Dragon, which featured the radio-dominating smash hit "Thong Song."

Unlike a number of other bands that have been hand-picked and assembled by label-appointed trend-watchers and fad experts, En Vogue turned out to be a project that clicked and, ultimately, ran on its own talent. Composed of four modern-day divas -- no doubt picked for their above-average photogenic traits, as well as for their voices -- the band could scale the registers from base to apex, combining their voices into mellifluous harmonies melting over sassy beats. They managed not only to use their vocal abilities, but to intertwine a sophisticated sexuality into their songs, making some of their most popular tracks seem very nearly like exercises in the art of being coy. They rebuffed potential suitors ("My Lovin' [You're Never Gonna Get It]"), sang sweetly to lovers ("Giving Him Something He Can Feel"), and even dealt with social issues ("Free Your Mind"), handling each style with equal aplomb. The success of their work depended on their amazing ability to showcase all their talents equally, giving loyal listeners a wide-variety sampler plate of aural delights to enjoy.

Jettisoning himself from the boy band crucible (and Jackson 5 knock-off) New Edition, Bobby Brown found late '80s love when he released his second solo album, Don't Be Cruel. From the street smart suit he wears on the cover to the pungently individualistic grooves like "My Prerogative," Brown stuck a chord in Reagan/Bush-era America. Singles such as "Roni" and "Every Little Step" also found success on the charts, though Brown's career has flagged with subsequent efforts.

An R&B trio from Oakland, Calif., Tony! Toni! Tone! consist of brothers Dwayne and Raphael Wiggons and their cousin Timothy Christian. Flipping a catchy, New Jack style reminiscent of Teddy Riley and Bel Biv Devoe, they debuted in 1988 with the album Who? and scored a big hit with their first single, the gospel-tinged "Little Walter."
Assembled by R&B production guru Teddy Riley, Blackstreet first hit the scene in 1994 with their self-titled debut. Merging soulful vocal harmonies with catchy, bass-heavy hip-hop beats, the four-man group found an eager and accepting audience in the New Jack crowd. Their 1996 follow-up Another Level featured the smash-hit "No Diggity" and sent them soaring up the charts. They've worked with several notable hip-hop artists, including Jay-Z and Foxy Brown. In 1999 Blackstreet released their third album Finally.

When New Edition picked up the pieces after Bobby Brown's departure, nasty-but-nice pop outfit Bell Biv Devoe was the result. With songs such as "Poison" and "Do Me!," the boys grew up in a hurry, singing hot, pointed lyrics around funky, slick effects. Their debut album, 1990's Poison, is a classic New Jack offering.

Coming out of Flint, Michigan, in the early 1980s, Ready For The World were a six-man crew who fused a variety of musical styles: funk, rock, R&B and New Wave. Sounding similar to acts like Prince and Cameo, they had several huge crossover hits, including "Oh Sheila" and "Love You Down." Their popularity waned as the eighties progressed, but they kept at it, releasing several more albums throughout the '90s.

If everybody's doing it, sooner or later someone had to start singing about it. Silk started as romantic crooners who used four-part harmonies to express longing and love. Eventually they became silky-voiced rhapsodists whose lyrics could make Marvin Gaye blush. There's no denying their vocal abilities are above par, and with music that oozes brazen sexuality, they come off like a team of scientists testing the power of aural Spanish fly. Lovers around the world now have room for something other than oysters in their refrigerators.

Seductive grooves, silky vocals and emotive songwriting are just a few of the reasons why Montell Jordan remains a clear favorite among the ladies long after his smashing success with "This Is How We Do It." A native of Los Angeles, Jordan signed to Def Jam following an audition for rap mogul (and Def Jam co-founder) Russell Simmons. Jordan's positive spin on his upbringing in South Central Los Angeles stood in direct contrast to the era's rising gangsta rappers, who preferred to sing about pimps, thugs and guns. Although he has never been able to match his initial success, Jordan continues to record, delivering the highly personal album Montell Jordan in 2002.

Color Me Badd aren't "bad" musically -- the harmonies stand up -- and they aren't so "bad" that they're actually good. If anything, the etymology of "badd" is probably related to Michael Jackson's assertion in his hit single of the same name. Sure, Jackson meant to be scary, but he was dancing around with one glove on. He was the king of cuddle. Nobody was scared. Nobody was meant to be scared. Color Me Badd's similarly cuddly, emasculated boy pop touched off a flurry of imitators (including the current deluge), and stayed in the charts throughout the '90s. Then as now, incessant harmonies and a cappella ruminations sweated their earnest way onto airwaves across the country. Their first hit single "I Wanna Sex You Up" had parents across the country scrambling for "birds and bees" books to quickly educate transfixed -- and confused -- young listeners.

A four-man R&B group, Shai, are best remembered for their debut single and biggest hit, 1992's "If I Ever Fall In Love Again." The title track from their first LP, the a capella love jam topped the charts and made them instant stars. Their style of minimalist, low-key beats topped by smooth harmonies and romance drenched lyrics endeared them to plenty of female fans, though subsequent albums ('95's Blackface and '99's Destiny) failed to match the commercial success of their debut. They released a greatest hits collection in 2001.

A groundbreaking foursome from Staten Island, NYC, the Force M.D.'s got their start in the late 1970's, performing for friends and at local talent shows. Comprised of Stevie D, Jesse D, Mercury, and T.C.D., they were signed to Tommy Boy in '83, and the following year released their debut LP Love Letters. Fusing live instrumentation, hip-hop beats, and harmony-rich doo-wop style vocals, they found success with hit singles like "Tears," "Tender Love," and "Love Is A House." They recorded four albums with the label, but by the nineties their spotlight was fading. A fifth album in '94 went largely unnoticed, and two members passed away not long after. Several "best of" compilations have since appeared, and they have also contributed back-up vocals to records by Wu-Tang's RZA and Ghostface. In 2001 Tommy Boy released Let Me Love You - The Greatest Hits.

TLC's fiestiest member, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes spent a decade in the spotlight, beginning with 1992's Oooooooohhh....On The TLC Tip. The group's ultra-catchy production and distinct style won them a grip of hit singles throughout the years, including "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg," "Creep," "Waterfalls," and "No Scrubs." TLC released three albums and took home four Grammys, as well as numerous platinum plaques. Known for her quick-tongued rapping, girlish good looks, and occassional temper, she was also somewhat notorious for a 1994 incident in which she burned down her boyfriend's mansion. Though she admitted to the arson, she served no time, and her career continued to excel. TLC co-starred in 1994's House Party 3, and Lisa would later host MTV's talent show The Cut. After the huge success of TLC's 1999 LP Fanmail, there were speculations of a break-up, though the group ended up staying together. Left Eye dropped her solo debut Supernova in 2001, but it failed to blow up as expected. In 2002, she hooked up with Suge Knight and was rumored to have briefly signed with his revamped label Tha Row, working under the name N.I.N.A. (New Identity Not Applicable). After re-connecting with TLC and making wedding plans, things were looking very good for Lisa. On April 26th, while working with a childrens' group in Honduras, she was tragically killed in a car crash at age 30.
