Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, Beausoleil's multiple Grammy nominations have yet to bear fruit. Undaunted, "the best Cajun band in the world" and what Rolling Stone once called "America's best dance band" have labored on through three decades of simultaneously innovative and traditional performances. Band leader Michael Doucet ought to be regarded as a national treasure for his efforts to popularize the Cajun waltzes and two-steps of the Acadian community dances known as "fais do do." By incorporating age-old Creole influences into songs accessible to modern ears such as "Iko, Iko" and "Bo Diddley," Doucet and his confreres succeeded in bringing Cajun music out of the swamps and taking it as far abroad as Europe (where the band's following is large). Accordion, fiddle and Doucet's grainy French patois are the band's musical mainstays.

It's difficult not to be swept away by the infectious, frenetic groove of Buckwheat Zydeco. The Creole-style hybrid Zydeco was born when Clifton Chenier took traditional African-American music from Louisiana, played on accordion and fiddle, and added a full-scale, amplified R&B rhythm section. Buckwheat Zydeco continued that tradition, and have become the most successful artists of the genre since Chenier's death. Some of their material points directly towards R&B, with shuffle beats, punchy horn lines, and classic Electric Blues riffs. Other tunes are straight ahead pounding two-step that aims to cleanse your soul by working your body to the bone. And through it all, lead singer Stanley Dural remains one of the genre's strongest voices, with a muscular baritone growl and undeniable charisma.

Doug Kershaw is yet another testament to the unique vitality of America's regional music scenes, and specifically, the musical fertility of southwest Louisiana. Kershaw crossed over to the world of pop when he signed a deal with Warner Bros. at the end of the 1960s, becoming a star and a hip purveyor of Cajun culture at rock clubs and on festival stages worldwide. Interestingly, he'd already sold millions of records as a country artist, and had been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since the late 1958. He dragged the sound of a whining Cajun fiddle into the mainstream with "Diggy Diggy Lo" and "Louisiana Man" (the latter has been covered countless times). Kershaw remains an active artist and has never abandoned his Cajun roots.

Although his own musical career hasn't been too commercially successful, there is not one country musician who can say that Jo-El Sonnier isn't a Cajun King Midas. He is a much in-demand session accordion accompanist and has landed on the albums of such artists as Hank Williams Jr., Ricky Skaggs, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Sonnier's own music is a hearty blend of festive Cajun R&B (he grew up in Louisiana), twang-toned Americana and slick Nashville country. He began playing the accordion at the tender age of three and landed his first radio performance when he was only six years old.

Although some Zydeco purists criticize C.J. Chenier for manicuring his music enough to fit into the R&B mainstream, those with more open minds can recognize innovation when they hear it. Chenier is the son of Zydeco pioneer Clifton Chenier. His father's legacy left him "the Crown Prince of Zydeco" as well as his father's backline of studied and experienced musicians. C.J. Chenier's voice is similar in inflections to his soulful father's, though C.J. seems more able to effortlessly traverse between tenor and baritone ranges (often leaning towards the latter). His innovative injections of country music, two-step waltz rhythms, swampy R&B, Funk grooves, and gritty blues shuffles have single-handedly strengthened Zydeco music, giving the genre a rhythmic boost as well as a pair of magic shoes that make the music much more easy to dance to.

A French-speaking native of Opelousas, La., Clifton Chenier's first break in the music biz came in 1954 when Elko Records released "Clifton's Blues," which became a big regional hit. Over the next three decades, Chenier's accordion-accompanied singing made him the definitive ambassador of zydeco -- a swampy, two-stepping blend of cajun, creole, RnB and blues traditions -- and one of the most influential artists of the region. An appearance on the PBS show Austin City Limits in 1976 led to an explosion of interest in his music, and Chenier won a Grammy for his 1982 album I'm Here. He died of diabetes-related kidney disease in 1987, but his legacy lives on in the music of his son, C.J. Chenier, his many singular recordings and his label, Alligator Records.

Powell's instrumental range makes him a hot commodity in traditional music circles from Louisiana to Appalachia. Banjo player, mandolinist, violinist and more, Powell keeps busy both as a session player and a member of Balfa Toujours as well as performing traditional Appalachian airs under his own name. On Hand Me Down (1999), Powell skillfully revitalizes old songs like "The Keys to the Kingdom" and sets them a-haunting once again.

This young accordion player has already established himself as a musical force in the bayous of Louisiana where his father, Zydeco master John Delafose, earned his fame with the Eunice Playboys. He plays the single-row and triple-row diatonic button accordion on French Cajun tunes and the larger piano accordion for his Zydeco barnburners. He started off as a child playing the rub board (a washboard worn over the chest and scraped) in his father's band before becoming a virtuoso accordionist in his own right. Steeped in the region's musical folklore, he performs a repertoire that includes Cajun, Zydeco, R&B, country and blues. Like his father, the younger Delafose has earned his reputation the only way a musician can where he comes from -- by rocking the house.

The tradition of Mardi Gras Indians, a ceremonial phenomenon that dates back to late 1800s, is one of the high points of the Mardi Gras experience. Specifically, the Wild Magnolias are a dancing/marching parade group more than a band per se. In accordance with the tradition, they march through the streets and face off with other "tribes" from around the city, with the best dance routine and wildest costumes determining the winning group. The Wild Magnolias are arguably the most well-known among the many neighborhood factions for the simple fact that they've released a number of unstoppably danceable records. The music is highly percussive, with a minimum of instruments other than drums and human voice, and it follows the basic, shave-and-a-haircut rhythms associated with "Willie and the Hand Jive" and Bo Diddley. The Wild Magnolias are an ebullient example of the mania that envelops New Orleans on Fat Tuesday, but they also keep that city's sometimes impenetrable culture alive.

Queen Ida seemed to come out of nowhere during the 1980s to become the leading ambassador of Cajun music. She may have been a short, granny glasses-wearing grandmother, but man, she could rock harder than three metal bands in a Bloomington quarry. Her domain is good-time zydeco music and she shows how a positive vibe can be as complex and vibrant as a classical lament. Ida brings elements of black, white, American, French, country, blues and rock together to make something joyous and unique. The fact that all this wonderful music pours out of a little old lady with an accordion only makes it more special.

Zydeco legend Boozoo Chavis grew up in Lake Charles, La., where his mother owned a dance hall and where he first made his acquaintance with the future king of Zydeco, Clifton Chenier. Chavis' first record, cut in 1954 for Goldband Records, was a large regional hit. He then took the next thirty years off from recording due to the fact that he thought he had been robbed of his royalties by Goldband. His recording career started again around 1984, and he has recorded steadily ever since. Chavis' sound has not mellowed over the years -- it remains lean, raw and rocking, with his three-button accordion and raw-throated vocals leading a swinging, stomping band. His X-rated classic "Deacon Jones" is much sought-after by collectors. Chavis has been immortalized in song by the band NRBQ in their classic number "Boozoo, That's Who."

Rockin' Dopsie (pronounced "doopsie") was an extremely popular performer on the southern Louisiana Zydeco circuit, as well as on the international festival circuit. When the undisputed "king" of Zydeco Clifton Chenier died, Dopsie was often spoken of as his successor. That said, Dopsie's Zydeco was a bit different than Chenier's; Dopsie played the small, button accordion and his band had a leaner, more stripped-down sound. He stripped down Zydeco's dance music core to a relentless groove. Late in his life, he became a somewhat sought-after player as mainstream music made one of its periodic forays into regional music -- his playing was featured prominently on cultural appropriator Paul Simon's Graceland album.

The brother of Michael Doucet, leader of the influential Cajun band Beausoleil, David Doucet is an expert acoustic guitarist. He has adapted Cajun songs to guitar in much the same way his hero Clarence White adapted Appalachian and Bluegrass fiddle songs. His playing is crisp and precise, combining some flashy Bluegrass picking with a more slurred and lyrical Cajun feel. Along with playing in Beausoleil with his brother, he has recorded a number of records as a leader and a sideman.
