The Jackson 5's bubblegum-flavored soul helped Motown usher in the 1970s with a string of chart toppers that included hits such as "ABC," "I Want You Back" and "The Love You Save." Raised in Gary, Indiana by devout Jehovah's Witnesses, the brothers endured the kind of strict upbringing that groomed them perfectly for the "Motown machine." And what a well-oiled machine it was! The Jackson 5's likenesses could be found on everything from lunchboxes to dolls to Saturday Morning cartoons. But by 1974, the machine showed signs of wear and tear: songs weren't charting as highly as they had previously, and demand for Jackson 5 merchandise was drying up. The machine broke down completely when, frustrated by Motown's refusal to allow the brothers to write or choose their own material, the Jackson 5 parted ways with the label and signed with Epic. Motown won a breach of contract suit, thus retaining the rights to the name Jackson 5. The brothers changed their named to the Jacksons. The Jackson 5 were inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of Fame in 1997.

They may have been prefabricated to steal pocket change from the pockmarked teen masses, but the Monkees were the best darn prefab rock band ever created by cynical cigar chompers (and counterculture director Bob Rafelson). Who cares if "Last Train to Clarksville" is an inferior rewrite of the Beatles' "Day Tripper," or if the Monkees were just an inferior, third-generation pastiche of the Fab Four? Their songs were fantastic -- from the hard-rocking drive of "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" to the dreamy Psychedelic splendor of "Porpoise Song." Could any of today's teenybopper confections release anything as brilliant as the Kinks-esque "Randy Scouse Git," which goes from sunny, British music hall to slamming Pre-Punk and back again? Despite all the nattering nabobs of negativity who say the Monkees never wrote their own tunes, they did pen a considerable number of their songs. They also relied on the talents of proven Brill Building scribes such as Goffin/King, Neil Diamond and Boyce/Hart. The TV show they were created to front remains a fun time capsule, and their bizarre, acid-drenched movie Head is still a creative tour de (unfocused) force. What does it say about modern pop music that the Prefab Four made better music than today's "uncompromising" artistic geniuses?

Emerging from a small Welsh town like a black-haired tornado, Jones won the hearts and panties of scores of women on both sides of the Atlantic with his roguish good looks, bodybuilder's physique, impressive vocal range, impassioned and wonderfully melodramatic delivery, and those oh-so-tight pants which left nothing to the imagination. Emerging during the British Invasion of the mid-1960s, Jones had quite a bit in common with pop singers who flexed their vocal muscle over heavily orchestrated arrangements. But his classic numbers -- "It's Not Unusual," "Delilah," "She's a Lady" -- reveal a raw sexuality and primal urgency that link him more to Vegas-era Elvis than popular crooners such as Sinatra. What Jones really does best is bring his unmistakable charisma and over-the-top vocal stylings to any and all musical settings -- country, electronica, R&B and rock 'n' roll. A great example of this is his cover of Prince's "Kiss," where the Welshman sexily growls and prowls like an over-sexed uber male while Art of Noise puts the music in a quirky dance pop setting.

Singer-songwriter Dion first hit it big while singing lead for Bronx doo-woppers the Belmonts, a group credited as being one of the best and most innovative Doo-Wop groups of the era. Being white surely helped the Belmonts rise above many of their African-American peers; nevertheless, Dion masterfully combined suave Vocal Pop with more energetic R&B, giving the group a lively, passionate sound that still wasn't too abrasive for parents. Their biggest hit (and Oldies standard) "Teenager In Love" showcases the peak of Dion and the Belmonts' skills, and stands today as one of the greatest Doo-Wop songs ever.

Frank Sinatra's offspring never inherited their father's galaxy-sized talent, but daughter Nancy has had the most interesting career and her work has been consistently strong in its own right. Nancy Sinatra started off having a nice run as a go-go crazed pop/rock singer and got hooked up with the eccentric, off-kilter songsmith Lee Hazelwood in 1966. Together, they released a whole slew of oddly tough and sexy singles, including the immortal chart-topper "These Boots Were Made For Walking" and the theme to one of the best of the James Bond pictures, You Only Live Twice. Considered kitsch in its day, Sinatra and Hazelwood's dramatic, Technicolor recordings have aged very well and are now widely covered and imitated by many of today's musical acts. Tan and curvaceous, Sinatra was the PG-rated, American version of Brigitte Bardot (and Nancy could at least carry a tune), but her career faded during the later half of the Nixon years. She made headlines in the '90s by proudly appearing in Playboy at more than twice the age of the average playmate and the stunt worked -- Nancy Sinatra is recording and touring once again, even recording songs written especially for her by fans such as Morrissey and Pulp's Jarvis Cocker. Sinatra has also written two massive, coffee-table-sized tomes about her father and has acted in numerous films and TV shows over the years.

Many consider Rick Nelson a classic teenage idol. Because of his clean-cut looks and the fact that his music consisted of watered-down Rockabilly and Soul, it took years before he would be considered anything other than a pretty face. Millions of television viewers saw Nelson's face each week on the Ozzie and Harriet show. As luck would have it, all his early singles found their way onto the show, continually rocketing him to the top of the pop charts: indeed, he reached the Top-40 thirty times between the years 1957 and 1962, second only to Elvis. When the TV show was cancelled in 1966, Nelson was able to concentrate solely on music. He formed a Country Rock band -- one of the first, in fact. Tragically, he died in 1985 in a plane crash while on his way to a New Year's Eve show in Dallas, Tex.

Pop idol, teenage heart throb and a businessman of superhuman success, Paul Anka sometimes appears to be the embodiment of the Eisenhower years' American dream. In the 1950s, "Puppy Love," "Diana," and "Put Your Head On My Shoulder" provided a safe alternative to that crotch-grabbing satanist Elvis Presley, but what's interesting is that Anka wrote most of the material he performed himself. After his pop career ground to a halt in the '60s, Anka bought the rights to his own music and lived off the money made in re-issues. He also wrote the Tom Jones hit "She's a Lady" and the Sinatra favorite "My Way." In the 1970s Anka enjoyed a brief comeback singing duets with Odia Coates, an Oakland, Calif., singer he discovered. Anka is responsible for some of pop music's smarmiest moments, but the joke's on us because he's got more money than God.

The Partridge Family were derided as manufactured stars during their early-1970s heyday, but today they are loved for that very fact. After the Monkees, they put the "fab" in prefab. David Cassidy, the object of every nymphet's budding desires, may have led the TV group, but the Family was really the product of a crack team of cigar-chomping businessmen, Brill Building songwriters like Goffin/King, and top LA session players. The very professionalism of this behind-the-scenes team ensured some of the best, saccharine-rich bubblegum pop to come out of pre-Watergate America. Such hits as "I Think I Love You," still sound great oozing out of a pink plastic transistor radio, but who can remember any of today's teen hits two months after the fact? Any rock group backed by Shirley Jones has to be worth its weight in Danny Bonaduce's non-prescription pharmaceuticals. "Come On Get Happy?" Love to.

The early-to-mid 1970s saw a plethora of stars making their way into the hearts, and living rooms, of American teens. David Cassidy, Bobby Sherman, Donny Osmond, Shawn Cassidy, and Leif Garrett all had their own television shows, singing careers, and cornered the market on covers for teen-oriented magazines such as Tiger Beat. The time was ripe to repackage the formula and sell it back to us. Enter the Bay City Rollers.
Born Charles Westover in Coopersville, Michigan, Del Shannon is known today for his dramatic, atypical 1961 single "Runaway," as well as a handful of songs that charted into the 1980s. Throughout his career, Westover leaned toward darker material with often unusual instrumentation, setting him apart from the rest of the pre-British Invasion crowd. In 1968, he released the overlooked, semi- psychedelic gem The Further Adventures of Charles Westover, a truly strange album coming from a former teen idol. With its somber tempos and mournful orchestration, the album seems like a poppier, less unhinged mirror image of Skip Spence's Oar. Westover was, however, doomed to fall into similar circumstances as Spence, mental health-wise. His career stopped in the '70s while he battled alcoholism, finally making a comeback in 1983 with the Tom Petty produced Drop Down And Get Me, which yielded a minor hit in "Sea of Love." In February of 1990, Westover took his own life with a .22 caliber rifle.

Their multipart harmonies, polished stage presentation and heavy-handed management made the New York-based Crystals a definitive 1960s group. During their seven years, their first lineup was the finest: Barbara Alston, Mary Thomas, Dee Dee Kenniebrew, Myrna Girard and Patsy Wright. The group was assembled by Alston's uncle, Benny Wells, who helped them get a deal with Phil Spector's Philles Records. The Crystals lit up the charts in 1961 with both sides of their first single, "There's No Other (Like My Baby)" and "Oh, Yeah, Maybe, Baby." Their second release, "Uptown," had the group crooning about loving a boy in the ghetto. Dolores "LaLa" Brooks replaced Girard for 1962's "He Hit Me (It Felt Like a Kiss)." Though a minor hit, the sales lagged, and Spector, under pressure to release a version of "He's a Rebel" before a competing label, packaged an L.A.-based group (the Blossoms) as the Crystals for the single. Ironically, it scored the Crystals' only No. 1 hit. The original group returned in 1963, though Thomas and Girard had formed the Butterflys. Other memorable singles included "Da Doo Ron Ron" and "Then He Kissed Me," both penned by Spector, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich.

Often thought of as a Caucasian version of the Jackson 5, the Osmonds are a Mormon family of Colgate-polished smiles who took over bubblegum pop music in the early '70s, with youngest singer Donny as the main attraction (as was Michael of the Jacksons). After the family's popularity began to wane and pages of Tiger Beat magazine began to yellow, Donnie and his younger sister Marie enjoyed a few seasons of hosting their own variety show on prime time television. Other members of the family have gone on to pursue careers in country music.

A teen rock idol turned country-etched pop crooner, Johnny Tillotson has had
a rich and varied career over the decades. A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Johnny Tillotson always possessed a natural affinity for country music and knew how to temper it with rock 'n' roll and R&B sounds along with a talent for teen pop balladeering. Tillotson found his greatest success in the early 1960s, but he kept making American singles chart appearances all the way up to 1984 and continued to have success in the rest of the world long after that. Like Bobby Darin, Tillotson was one of the few pop singers who wrote a fair amount of his own material, with many of his tunes getting covered by other artists. The most successful of these, "It Keeps Right On A Hurtin'" has been recorded by dozens-upon-dozens of performers, with everyone from Dean Martin to Elvis Presley to Conway Twitty making the song work for them. Besides appearing in concert with artists as varied as Ray Charles and Carl Perkins, Johnny Tillotson also played on England's Top Of The Pops, with the Beatles and is beloved by pop culture fanatics for crooning the theme song to the TV show Gidget. Rather than sitting back and collecting songwriting royalties, Johnny Tillotson still tours and performs widely.

Bobby Rydell was one of the biggest teen sensations in pre-Beatles America. Today he is sometimes dismissed as a prefab Bobby Darin because of his knack for taking on every style -- from pop to R&B to country. Unlike such greasy-haired heartthrobs as Fabian and Frankie Avalon, Rydell could really sing and didn't need to hide behind studio gimmicks. His female fans aged with him and kept Rydell going as a top concert draw.

James Darren was a small screen teen heart throb during the Gidget era who subsequently spun off into a recording career. His music was originally aimed at impressionable nymphets, but it holds up as fun semi-rock 'n' roll. The talented Darren's done it all, from being a star during his early-1960s Brill Building phase, to supporting roles on bad taste classics such as T.J. Hooker. His career is on track once again, and when not starring in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, he sings standards in a voice that sounds like an older Jack Jones with phrasing a la Tony Bennett. Oddly enough, while Darren and Jones both had hit singles with "Lollipops and Roses" all those years ago, much of his repertoire, such as "Here's to the Losers" and "Come Fly With Me," is associated solely with Sinatra.

Crawford started his career as a child actor and Mouseketeer on The Mickey Mouse Club. He then went on to play opposite Chuck Connors on the popular series The Rifleman. Back in the early 1960s this was enough to get you a record deal, and Crawford went into the charts a number of times with the records he cut for Los Angeles indie Del-Fi. His dramatic songs of teen love and angst were written by folks including David Gates (who later went on to lead the chart topping Bread) and Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, the legendary Brill Building writers responsible for "You've Lost That Loving Feeling."

Perhaps the leading Teen Beat poster boy of the disco era, Andy Gibb was a pop sensation in the late 1970s. The youngest Gibb brother, he was able to bypass the leaner times that his older siblings experienced as members of a tough, working class family of English musicians who immigrated to Australia. The only Gibb brother you could properly call an Ozzie, Andy possessed a laidback, beach vibe that was financed by his three elder brothers, as they became the Bee Gees and initially found great success as a Beatlesque pop act of unparalleled melancholy. After the brothers Gibb transitioned into a disco act, they helped their teenaged sibling enter the pop world. Starting with the Bee Gees clone "I Just Want To Be Your Everything" in 1977, Andy had a string of defining, Love Boat era hits that included "Shadow Dancing" and "Thicker Than Water." Andy's silk pastel jacketed teen appeal seemed bright enough to survive the demise of disco and he entered the 1980s with the stunning sex goddess Victoria Principal on his arm. Unfortunately, he also entered the decade with a mountain of cocaine up his nose, and a seriously stalled recording career. While his brothers career survived disco going on to conquer their own personal demons, Andy Gibb died in 1988, at age thirty, from a virus infection in his heart.
