Formed in 2004, this Sheffield, Yorkshire, England quintet took its name from a line in Pirates of the Caribbean and its sound from American hardcore and metal. Combining the elements of straight-edge hardcore, primitive '90s metalcore, and death metal, BMTH fused their own brand of crushing music that got the attention of the music industry. After releasing their debut album only in the U.K. in 2006, the band -- Oliver Sykes (vocals), Lee Malia (guitar), Curtis Ward (guitar), Matt Kean (bass), and Matt Nicholls (drums) -- was voted Best Newcomers by Kerrang! Magazine, and the media frenzy ensued. They quietly re- released the album in the United States a year later, but it wasn't until Epitaph Records released 2008's highly anticipated second full-length Suicide Season following their stint on the 2008 Vans Warped Tour that BMTH became a force in the States.

Formed in 2000 in North Carolina, Between the Buried and Me play extremely technical and varied death metal with super-growly Cookie Monster-esque vocals. The songs have many components, ranging from obliterating grind-core, to messing with signature signatures like the Gorguts on lithium, to moments of sheer ethereal beauty. But it's these passages with light guitars and sung vocals that really set Between the Buried apart from other folks playing death metal today.

From the outset, the Dillinger Escape Plan's sonic terror has been precision violence. Franticly unloading extreme dissonance and exacting attacks of gleaming chrome noise against chaotic rhythms, they embody alarmist anxiety. While they've never been shy to change direction mid-song (tempos converging, frenzied thrashing dropping away to tense, Sabbath slow-builds) their new direction widens the chasm between musical moments. Guitar grinds stumble into Fusion noodling and rip into a blastbeat-driven frenzy. Mr. Bungle comparisons are definitely at hand, though Patton and co. possess neither the aggressive abandon of the Dillinger Escape Plan nor vocalist Dimitri Minakakis' rash, unyielding percussive screams.

That so many Carcass fans considered the fierce Death Metal assault of Swansong (1996) a sellout says something about the band's origins. Debuting in 1988 with the guttural early Grindcore of Reek of Putrefaction, the quartet established itself as one of the more extreme Metal bands around. The medically detailed and all but indecipherable lyrics to songs like "Cadaveric Incubator of Endoparasites" tend to grab attention first, but the self-consciously gory shenanigans are backed by an appropriately stomach-churning musical attack. Their murky riffs, claustrophobic drums and absurdly low-in-the-throat vocals (courtesy of onetime Napalm Death guitarist Bill Steer) established a pattern many bands would follow. After a brief recording hiatus, they reemerged in 1994 with the more cleanly produced and increasingly song-centered Heartwork, and bassist Jeff Walker's demonic mid-range replaced Steer's low growl. The aptly named Swansong put the last nail in the coffin, so to speak, offering their most accessible yet most controversial work. Whether it signaled evolution or "sellout" was something the band itself could not agree on, and they split around the time of its release.

Though formed in New Hampshire in 2001, grind enthusiasts Trap Them find themselves split between the east and west coast; vocalist Ryan McKenney and bassist Steve Lacour live in Seattle, while guitarist Brian Izzi resides in New Hampshire and drummer Mike Justian in Massachusetts. Originally called Trap Them + Kill Them when they were simply a side project for McKenney and Izzi, the band didn't start releasing proper albums until its 2007 debut Sleepwell Deconstructor, the first of three releases from the band that year. They signed to Converge vocalist Jacob Bannon's label Deathwish, which released the EP Seance Prime, a split with Extreme Noise Terror. In 2008, Trap Them put out their second full-length, Seizures in Barren Praise, produced as always by Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou.

Britain's Death Metal troopers Benediction have been releasing records since the late '80s. Their one handicap has been losing lead vocalists to the competition -- namely, Bolt Thrower and Napalm Death. Benediction's music is reliably devastating, and often blistering enough to qualify them as a Grindcore band.

As Grindcore bands go, these guys may not be the most brutal (they're not exactly light listening either), but they are one of the ugliest. Embracing monotony, obnoxiousness, and above all speed, they single-mindedly race through concise, bitter song-like movements. Their 1998 Relapse debut Honky Reduction contained twenty-five tracks, with all but one clocking in at under 1:17. Not for everyone, but for those who appreciate such bands as Anal C*nt (with whom they share members), they're a refreshing breath of foul air.

Napalm Death were the band responsible for hacking off the Metal limb that would subsequently regenerate as Grindcore. Pushing the human body to discover the limits of how fast it can drum, strum and vocalize, the tempos they achieved on their early albums are unsurpassable, except digitally. Guitar notes swarm in on listeners like a cloud of flesh-eating insects with a fondness for ear meat, while the drums seem like they're being played with a machine gun. Meanwhile, vocal duties sound like they're being shared by Yoda after a long trek through the desert without water and a shrieking Sam Kinison stuck in a cocaine-less Hell. Though later efforts found the band backing off maximum overdrive to explore heaviness at slower speeds, their music still teems with sound and fury. Napalm Death's organ-mulching blasts of noise continue to define the state of the art in audio brutality.

Hailing from Philadelphia, Pa., by way of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., this analog-based experimental metal trio formed in 2004, and have been devout road warriors ever since. Mixing I.D.M. and noise with grind core and doom metal, Genghis Tron-- Mookie Singerman (vocals), Michael Sochynsky (keyboards) and Hamilton Jordan (guitars) -- formed their own synthesized brew of extreme music dubbed "electro-grind." In live as well as recorded performances, Genghis Tron simulate drum and bass effects using a drum machine and keyboard fills. Their chaotic debut, 2006's Dead Mountain Mouth, grabbed the attention of the media and also gained these tour enthusiasts attention from Decibel Magazine, where Singerman contributes a monthly column based on Genghis Tron's stories from the road called "Smile, You're Traveling." After signing to Relapse Records, they released their sophomore album, 2008's Board Up the House, to critical acclaim. Upping the ante with more melodious departures and streamlined storytelling this time around, Genghis Tron continue to invent and reinvent their own unique style.

From their 1997 inception, Virginia-based death metal/grindcore superstars Pig Destroyer have represented the very forefront of extreme American metal. The band features guitarist Scott Hull, formerly of seminal hardcore chaos maniacs Anal C*nt and the sole permanent member of grindcore mainstays Agoraphobic Nosebleed, scary chimpanzee screecher J. R. Hayes, drummer John Evans and no bass. Pig Destroyer's inhumanly fast tempos, raving lunatic vocals and propensity for truly disturbing themes centering on violence are pretty much unrivaled in music. Basically, they're as nuts and smart as grindcore can possibly be. In addition to the jarring speeds, Hull manages to peal off some kind of thrumming hot lick in practically every 49-second burst of sonic terrorism the trio produces (see "Restraining Order Blues" and the title cut from 2004's Terrifyer). Chugging death/doom breakdowns and far out, K.K. Downing-inspired solos further blur the lines between death and grind metal. Since they signed with Relapse in 2000, each Pig Destroyer release has been received with clamoring praise from critics and fans alike.

Long considered one of the very heaviest and technically complicated groups to emerge from the muck of the New Orleans sludge metal/doom/grindcore scene, Soilent Green have made a name for themselves despite offering precious few releases (four full-lengths) for a band that's been together since 1988. Due in part to founding guitarist Brian Patton's longtime side gig playing guitar beside Jimmy Bower in Eyehategod, Soilent Green has seen enough hard times to dismantle 90% of the other bands on earth. Two van accidents, the murder in 2004 of bassist Scott Williams by his deranged roommate and the devastation of Hurricane Katrina would be enough to deep-six almost anybody, but Soilent Green has continued to record (albeit at their usual pace) and in 2007 moved from Relapse Records to Metal Blade. Jamming elements of hardcore and death metal up against slowed-down Southern rock riffs and torpid Sabbath doom, then putting it all to some weird time signature, Soilent Green's records can be an education in metal -- if you can get past Ben Falgoust's truly hateful lyrics and consistently disturbing vocal schizophrenia.

Born in N.Y.C. in 2005, this self-proclaimed "emo power-violence" band channels the mid-'90s movement of the same name. Featuring Geoff Rickly of Thursday on vocals, it's also highly speculated to feature Daryl Palumbo of Glassjaw/Head Automatica on backing vocals, Ben Koller of Converge on drums, and possibly members of Made Out of Babies and the Number 12 Looks Like You pulling guitar duties. Because these artists are all under contract with their respective record labels for their more prominent bands, their identities cannot be confirmed, but that didn't deter United Nations' eponymous 2008 debut on Eyeball Records from its seismic placement on the underground radar.

NYC metal gods Brutal Truth forged maniacally violent, punishing sounds that pushed the limits of listenability. Sounding as if it were devised for a snuff film or a "thrill kill" computer game, their music is harsh, truculent, and, yes, brutal. No false advertising here. Anti-capitalism, anti-racism, anti-religion, anti- pretty much everything except marijuana, this band thoroughly embraced negativity and nihilism and turned them into the creative forces that drove their music. Lead vocalist Kevin Sharp sings as if his words could fan the flames of Armageddon -- he sings as if he were himself on fire. With the rest of the band, he decimated the Metal engine of Grindcore and reassembled it using Industrial technology. The Robocop monstrosity this resulted in was truly something new under the sun: fast (but not enslaved to speed), noisy (but grooveable), crackling and sludgy at the same time. The group disbanded in 1998.

Their diligent output of way-underground split 7-inches and comp tracks paid off with their 1998 full-length on Relapse entitled Inhale/Exhale.

Australia's Blood Duster take their name from a song by John Zorn's Naked City but a tribute band they are not. In contrast to NC's shrill, cut-and-paste madness, they play a bottom-heavy mix of gore-filled Grindcore and grooving, southern-fried Death Metal. The former part of the equation comes through more heavily on their Relapse debut, 1996's Yeest (actually a compilation of two previous releases), as their music revealed a prominent early Napalm Death/Carcass influence. The subsequent Str8 Outta Northcote (1998), on the other hand, finds their hillbilly roots showing through to a much fuller extent. They've never taken themselves too seriously -- just look at their song titles -- but neither do they let things devolve into pure campiness.

Meat-hating death/grind metal band Cattle Decapitation was formed in San Diego in 1996, by two then-members of big time art hardcore band the Locust, bassist Dave Astor and drummer Gabe Serbian. Astor eventually left the Locust for Cattle Decapitation and Serbian eventually left Cattle Decapitation for the Locust. Astor himself quit CP in 2002 and the band, with a guy from 7000 Dying Rats (Josh Elmore) on guitar, the drummer from Creation is Crucifixion replacing Astor and two totally unrelated dudes on bass and vocals, soldiered on. Still with us? Why? Anyway, the band's music has evolved over the years from hardcore-y, joke-laden grind to a more straight death metal with throaty puke-vocals and the occasional Slayer solo. Lyrics and album art detail the band's stance on meat-eating (anti), the meat industry (it sucks) and humanity in general (also sucks). After a pair of late-'90s Three One G releases (Justin Pearson of the Locust's label), the four piece signed to Metal Blade in 2002. Accordingly, their 2006 album, Karma, Bloody Karma, is geared more toward actual metal fans than when they were living in the shadow of the Locust.

Man is the Bastard are the proud pioneers of a genre known as power violence. Marked by noisy, grinding Hardcore riffs; shrieking vocals; and layers of vicious electronics, the San Francisco group is not to be taken lightly. A respected member of the underground scene since the early 1990s, the group continually stretches song form to its most harsh and abstract, stripping melody to bare notions of rhythm and texture. They have spawned several side projects/aliases, most notably Charred Remains and the power electronics of Bastard Noise. Feel the crust.

Merauder have been a fixture on the New York City Hardcore scene since 1990. With more Heavy Metal in their veins than a Superfund site, these Brooklyn street toughs don't just play their instruments, they pulverize them. If ultra-heavy aggro rock is manna to your ears, Merauder are your salvation.

Washington, D.C.'s ABACABB -- vocalist Tyler Greene, guitarists Dan Moody and Tim Roskie, bassist Stefan Mills and drummer Navid Naghdi -- formed in 2004, but saw quite a few lineup changes as they grew in popularity on the East Coast. Playing a bloodcurdling brew of technical death metal and grindcore, ABACABB's moniker (see: the blood code for Mortal Kombat on Sega Genesis) couldn't be more fitting. Signed to Sumerian Records in 2008, they released their debut full-length, Survivalist, in early 2009.

Despite their name, Pennsylvania's Circle of Dead Children are not just batch of another pointlessly offensive Metal miscreants. There are no silly gore/horror references or blind words of praise to the almighty Satan in their lyrics. Actually, they sing about politics and social issues, but then again, this is Grindcore we're dealing with -- you can't understand what they're saying without a lyric sheet. What matters is the music, and they deliver in that category. Their sound is deep, dense, and massively "heavy," yet at the same time marked by clear production that catches the details rather than yielding an undefined blur. Their songs shift smoothly between fast Death Metal riffs, grinding blastbeat sections, and bluesy sludge breakdowns worthy of New Orleans doom-bringers Eyehategod. Topping it off is a vocal mix of ridiculously deep death growls, crusty Hardcore screams and tormented Black Metal yelps. Sick and smart at the same time, CoDC are obviously not for all tastes, but if you've made it this far, you're probably ready to dig in.

Afloat in a porcelain bowl of amphetamine-fed guitars and crisply unrelenting beats, hateful vocals make incomprehensible utterances that never falter in their greedy, bastardized anger. These are the soiled leavings of a famed one-time collaboration between Napalm Death veterans Mick Harris and Mitch Harris.
