Translated from Italian as "empty spiral," Lacuna Coil works simultaneously within doom, black and goth metal spheres marked by somber keyboards and female singer Cristina Scabbia trading off with male singer Andrea Ferro. The band formed in Milan in 1994, and became virtual household names on the European metal scene through high-profile tours and the commercial and critical reception of their 1999 debut album, In A Reverie. With Comalies, released in 2004, Lacuna Coil continued to gain respect and popularity, avoiding the pop packaging of aesthetically similar band Evanessence. Karmacode, marked by a stylistic shift toward heaviness, followed in 2007.

Lamb of God are part of a recently burgeoning scene intent on bringing back the heaviness and brutality that once marked metal but has been worn down by several years of nu-metal, melodic metal and the current plethora of supposed metal bands that actually play post-grunge, namely Saliva, Staind, Linkin Park, etc. To their credit, Lamb of God do a good job of doling out genuine death metal with guitar riffs that are not too overly complex, vocals that are the requisite combination of growling and shrieking and violence as the subject of many of their songs. What's incredible is they manage to pull all this off despite the fact that they are on a major label. The band formed in Virginia in 1998, toured constantly and put out a pair of well-received records on indie labels. They were signed to Epic in 2003.

Along with At the Gates, In Flames rule the fertile Swedish metal scene with an iron fist. Darkened keyboard introductions lay an ominous feeling of dread over your soul, but come nowhere near preparing you for the coming assault. Seemingly without warning, frantic guitar riffs explode with feverish intensity and lightning speed. Soon maniacal shrieks join the battle with merciless intent, growling truths that are hard to deny. Given the dramatic guitar work and structural complexity of the tunes, one would expect the lyrics to be drenched in myth and fantasy. While certainly melodramatic, the lyrics tend to focus more on personal issues than theatrical excess, lending the tunes an emotional authenticity and urgency rare in black metal. In Flames' epic style owes quite a bit to the seminal work of Iron Maiden, but reaches heights of speed and depths of evil that Maiden have yet to approach. Fierce stuff.

One of the biggest metal bands to come out of Finland, Children of Bodom bang out heavy but melodic death metal with synthesizers playing a major part in the music -- which isn't a bad thing at all, as songs are suitably brutal, with wriggling guitar riffs and pit-of-hell wraith-vocals. At their best, Children of Bodom sound like Ram It Down-era Judas Priest mixed with Celtic Frost. The name comes from a notorious, as-yet-unsolved 1960s mass murder near their hometown of Espoo, Finland, in which three teenage campers were brutally killed. The band's 1997 debut, Something Wild, sparked international fame for them, and they've been steady sellers both in Finland and abroad ever since.

Black metal history's earliest, most monumental moments were fraught with exaggerated claims and overt acts of evil that found bands' unceasing attempts to top each other with examples of hatred and misanthropy. While the claims were (for the most part) merely pretense, many bands turned the spectacle into a more overt form of theater. The most realized band in that realm is Cradle of Filth. A cunning sense of dark drama and spectacle looms over their music like gargoyles that keep watch over a castle; but just as imaginary as the gargoyle, Cradle of Filth's claims toward evil are poetic, not actual, though as many Christianity advocates have vehemently claimed of this ungodly band, there is perhaps no division between the two. But to dwell on Cradle of Filth's pomp is merely an overture to the reality of their sound -- patently evil. Not the sort of evil you learned in Sunday school, but the evil that is eked out of dusty books and reveals some form of ancient, forbidden knowledge. Their albums are elaborate, rococo orchestrations that are closer in construction to a Wagnerian opera than a rock song. Symphonies of guitars, heavy organ chords and female vocals play off of wickedly complex percussion. The most unmistakable element of Filth's sound is Dani Filth's vocal acrobatics. He screams piercing notes that find harmony with your night sweat's shivers, then drops to a dark, purgatorial growl. His lyrics dwell on typically gothic subjects: death, eternity, sex, blood and suffering. Their album Cruelty and the Beast is entirely based on the legend of the Countess Elizabeth Bathory -- cliche perhaps, but Cradle of Filth always create with an intelligence and self-awareness that reveals a great art.

Sweden's Opeth specialize in doom-laden, downtrodden epics that combine elements of '70s Progressive Rock, melodic Death Metal, and Scandinavian folk music. Their songs move through blazing Metal sections, somber acoustic guitar picking, classical piano interludes, and majestic dual guitar harmonizing -- often without revealing any discernible underlying theme until, say, the tenth listen. Songs run in the ten minute range (though twenty isn't out of the question), with very little repetition. Listening takes patience, for one thing, as well as a fondness for the cold, dark gray atmosphere and borderline self-pitying sense they exude. Then there are the vocals, which alternate between deep growls that could send a bear cowering back into his cave, and clean, melodic singing that could put a crying baby to sleep within seconds. Clearly, this band isn't for everyone, but they haven't become one of the most talked about underground Metal bands of the last five or ten years for nothing.

Most striking about this band is their vocal delivery, a whips-and-satin style that combines harsh growls and limpid, clean singing. There's a touch of In Flames and At the Gates in Shadows Fall's counterbalancing of down-tuned guitars and high-flying vocals, but their playing is more progressive, allowing each player to fan their talents across the table like a winning hand.

Former Mercyful Fate vocalist gone solo, King Diamond's unmistakable voice exhibits absolutely inhuman range, jumping easily from low rumbles to vibrato-laden falsettos. A master of the concept album, Diamond takes the gothic theatricality of his former band to an even greater extreme, tackling fantastical themes of Wagnerian scope with utter sincerity. Amazingly, his live performances manage to live up to the epic challenge laid forth on record, often incorporating actors to portray his tragic characters. Black Metal at its best.

The long-running career of Norwegian symphonic black metal band Dimmu Borgir launched with a 7-inch that sold out within weeks of its 1993 release. Since then the group has enjoyed international darling status and held a place as a major player on the mainstream metal landscape, a fact that has often obscured its high level of creativity and divided purist metal fans over its overall worth. That creativity has shown itself in eight (so far) punctually biannual records that combine doom-y elegance with the thrum of black metal guitars, unapologetically dramatic classic moves and intense wraith-screech vocals. Dimmu Borgir's defining moment came in 1997, when they signed to Nuclear Blast and released the smash hit album Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, their first to feature lyrics in English. They had also made a controversial decision to do away with their traditionally entangled black metal logo and go with a straightforward, easily readable version. These moves have contributed to the perception of Dimmu Borgir as sellouts, despite the fact that while their songs reach masses of people through radio and MTV airplay, there is little metal in the mainstream that's as heavy, black or imaginative.

Bigger in death than in life, Turbonegro fulfilled their calling as Europe's reining kings of death punk. Beginning in the late 1980s as a nondescript yet aggressive hardcore band, these boys of darkness slowly moved into a Spinal Tap-like version of hard rock/punk, even as their music retained a killer edge. They had a sharp mind for theatrics and realized that a few good gimmicks -- coupled with ever-tighter, faster, louder rock 'n' roll -- could make them one of the biggest, most over-the-top bands their native Scandinavia (and the whole world) had ever seen. Turbonegro paraded themselves as a gay band (even though no one in the band was actually gay) and ripped through stunningly thunderous songs as if Thor himself were pulling the strings. Their heart-stopping intensity, along with guitar prodigy Euroboy's hot licks and their keen sense of wit, helped craft the Turbonegro legend, and their songs moved from solid punk into a tongue-in-cheek arena rock sound complete with storming sing-alongs and garish fireworks. Turbonegro's live shows topped even their music, and often ended with singer Hank Von Helvete performing his "Ass Rocket" routine (use your imagination). Going down in a ball of flames at the apex of their career guaranteed that, true to their word, Turbonegro's darkness shall live forever.

Dark Tranquillity's vocalist swings in a wide emotional pendulum during each performance. Sometimes he grunts with the voice of an ogre, but he can also croon with the dejected intensity of a suicidal torch singer. Such diversity is essential to the band's wide-ranging music, which integrates technical metal into operatic structures.

All hail Venom! The godfathers of Black Metal, this NWOBHM band formed in 1979, releasing three classic albums before they'd given a single live performance. By the time the veiled-in-mystery band toured, the buzz about them was enormous. Cronos' dread-inspiring vocals seemed delivered not from the voice box, but from an inner Pandora's box. Drummer Abaddon and guitarist Mantas kicked up maelstroms of their own. No power trio before them had created such a fray of propulsive beats and godly riffage. Venom distilled all of Metal's clichés -- the obsessions with war, sex, fantasy, the occult -- and took them to extremes bordering on parody. Chanting along to the wicked camp of "In League with Satan" and "Live Like an Angel (Die Like a Devil)" are guilty pleasures. Amoral? Perhaps, but no less so than indulging in the rank sexism of "Red Light Fever" and "Teacher's Pet." Some followers (e.g., the Scandinavian Black Metal scene) took their satanic posturing literally, but for Venom the "metal" in heavy metal was always pure irony.

Chicago-born trio Nachtmystium is the brainchild of frontman Blake Judd, who built a unique, ever-changing sound on a foundation of primitive black metal. The band started out in 2000 as a raw homage to Norwegian black metal, but Judd became disillusioned with the trendiness of the scene and ditched the corpse paint, stage names and other black metal conventions to sonically expand upon the basics. By introducing ambient, psyche, '70s rock and various other departures into territory once uncharted by black metal, Nachtmystium garnered critical acclaim for their amalgamated brand on 2006's Instinct: Decay. Sticking with the experimental vibe, vocalist/guitarist Judd -- the only constant member of Nachtmystium and the sole songwriter -- added guitarist Jeff Wilson and drummer Tony Laureano to his always revolving lineup of session musicians for 2008's much-anticipated Century Media debut, Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. 1.

Is At the Gates' Slaughter of the Soul the perfect dark Metal album? There aren't many recordings that can throw your entire world off its axis and leave you spinning lopsided with the weight of doom, but this record will. Every song pounds with its own black heart and abides by its own bleak logic. Most so-called "technical metal" acts truck in cheap, penny-ante riffs that line up head to tail like so many well-heeled sheep. At the Gates move fluidly through a menagerie of complex, unpredictable measures -- each phrase gliding imperceptibly into the next -- without ever sounding showy. Lyrically, this band brilliantly defies the pomposities of Black Metal, writing songs that writhe with real agonies. Everything At the Gates touched is worth hearing, but Slaughter... represents them in their finest hour. It's an album with flesh between its teeth, blood under its nails, and the cloud of horrible visions in its eye.

Norwegian Black Metal band Satyricon pushed the envelope in this genre a
little bit, being among the first to incorporate the synthesizers and goth
elements that eventually became hallmarks of black metal. Their first two
records are more traditional-sounding, with the usual throat-raking vocals
and an emphasis on shimmering walls of guitar shred, but with the release of
Nemesis Divina in 1997, the group had started using pianos and
mournful melodies to fill out their sound. In 2003, Satyricon became the
first black metal band to release an album on a major label, when Capitol
Records put out the surprisingly authentic and well-received Volcano. Three years later Now, Diabolical was released to mixed emotions from fans, and in 2008 the more primitive-styled The Age of Nero was released.

Formed in Olympia, Wash., in 2002, this ambient black metal quartet mixes the transcendental mindset of their Olympic Mountains hometown with pagan ideology and the primitive sound of '90s Norwegian black metal. Brothers Nathan (guitarist, vocalist) and Aaron Weaver (drummer), along with Will Lindsay (guitarist) and Ross Sewage (bassist), create atmospheric soundscapes that are emotional, pointed and heavy both in sound and statement. Wolves in the Throne Room often perform outdoors and are radical environmentalists. But sociopolitics aside, the band garnered mainstream attention for the lengthy epics and squalling sounds featured on its debut album, Diadem of 12 Stars. After signing with Southern Lord, WITTR released Two Hunters to critical acclaim in 2007, returning in 2009 with Black Cascade.

With their early records recorded on 4-track in teenage guitarist Quorthon's garage, Sweden's Bathory are often cited as the first black metal band. Low-budget production, rampant Satanic imagery, punk-simple guitars and Quorthon's guttural yelps had a major effect on the Norwegian scene that emerged not long after Bathory's first three records: 1984's Bathory, '85's The Return of the Darkness and Evil and '87's Under the Sign of the Black Mark. The first stirrings of what would become Viking metal emerged on 1988's Blood Fire Death. Quorthon slowed tempos, incorporated acoustic guitars, and wrote lyrics more concerned with a noble death on the battlefield than with Satanism. Bathory continued with the Manowar-worthy Hammerheart and their intended final album, 1991's Twilight of the Gods. Instead of breaking up, however, they came back in 1995 with the Bay Area thrash-influenced Requiem. Returning to Viking metal in the '00s, they released Nordland and Nordland 2, the first installments in what was to be a four-album cycle, before the tragic 2004 death of Quorthon (from heart failure) effectively ended the band.

While Agalloch's gothic, melancholy moods take hold from the first instant, their subtly crafted melodies take a little longer to seep in. That's okay, as the songs stretch into the eight or ten minute range, the understated, clean-toned guitar figures have time to leave their mark.
Dubbed "Viking metal" thanks to pervasive lyrics about Norse mythology in their early days, Enslaved were started in 1991 by Norwegian teenagers Ivar Bjornson and Grutle Kjellson (ages 13 and 17, respectively, at the time). Their first release, an EP split with Emperor, appeared in 1993, with their full-length debut, Vikingligr Veldi, following a year later. From the start, the band was prone to complex, multisectional epics that often stretched beyond the 10-minute mark and demonstrated a different approach to the black metal scene emerging around them. Keyboards, mouth harps and a decidedly more sophisticated recording setup than that of most of their almost-lo-fi counterparts set Enslaved apart from the pack and gave rise to notions of progressive black metal. These elements grew more distinct, even replacing traditional black metal moves according to some, as the band continued to release records into the '00s (Vertebrae, a straight-up prog metal album save the vocals, came out in 2008). Today Enslaved are cited as a major influence on countless metal acts.

Immortal remain one of the first and most important of the Norwegian black metal bands. Long known as a mysterious, corpse-paint slathered, winter scene-obsessed, fire-breathing, brutally fast black/thrash metal combo, Immortal's music was all but impossible to get one's hands on for the years they were most active -- 1991-1995 -- and long after, until their material was finally repackaged and re-issued in 2006. Distinguished from the whole of the Norwegian scene by a highly distinctive, glacier-like thrum that characterized their trio of essential early albums -- Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism (1992), Pure Holocaust (1993) and Battles in the North (1995) -- Immortal further separated themselves from the pack with the fact that they did not espouse Satanism. Their lyrics mostly centered on tales of a fictional and elaborately conceived planet ravaged by constant war. The band continued to release albums until 2002, when they went on recording hiatus until 2009, only appearing at European metal festivals and a handful of resurrective tours in the interim.

Infamous for their unfortunate Aryan politics and more unfortunate instances of public anti-Semitism, Darkthrone represent the quandary much Norwegian black metal forces normal metal fans into. While their politics may be loathsome, Darkthrone's music, particularly the vocals of Nocturno Culto and his ability to pen highly memorable riffs, is among the very best to have come out of Norway during the black metal explosion of the 1990s. Formed as a death metal band in 1987, Darkthrone released a string black metal albums that became highly influential for both their artwork and their musical brutality, beginning with A Blaze in the Northern Sky in 1992 and, for all intents and purposes, ending in 1996 with Total Death. In between, both Transylvanian Hunger and Under a Funeral Moon were (and are) considered major achievements in the black metal scene. Since 1996, Darkthrone have continued to release records, as well as evolve musically, leaving the primitive studio techniques of their beginnings behind for a cleaner sound. In July of 2007, with a dozen albums under their belt, they released the EP NWOBHM (New Wave of Black Heavy Metal).

Mayhem is one of a handful of bands that can be credited with igniting the whole Norwegian black metal scene. Formed in 1983 by Venom fans who took the band's "satanic" imagery rather seriously, Mayhem eventually became one of, if not the most notorious of the Norwegian bands. Started by two kids calling themselves Manheim and Necrobutcher, the intent was to create the most evil music the world had ever known. The pair enlisted local record store owner Euronymous on guitar and a guy named Maniac on vocals, and very quickly the band's lifestyle began to reflect the music. Maniac left after recording some demos and a failed suicide attempt. His replacement, Dead, actually blew his own brains out, a scene which the guitar player Euronymous, took pictures of, allegedly ate some of his friend's brain and made jewelry of bone fragments he picked up before the police arrived. Euronymous himself was eventually brutally murdered by Varg Vikernes, (aka Count Grishnackh of Burzum, the notorious one-man pagan reclamation project) an early member of the band, for not being evil enough, or owing him money, according to conflicting reports from Vikernes himself. Live shows were played with dead, rotting animals on the stage and one of the band members actually kept his clothes in a hole in the ground, so they would be sufficiently decayed for showtime. Regardless of all the hype (and we're not even mentioning the 100-plus churches that were burnt to the ground in Norway during this period), Mayhem's first proper record, De Mysteriis Dom Sanathas, is one of the very best releases of the genre. The band continued on after the death of Euronymous, and releases albums to this day.

With so much Black Metal setting sail from Norway and conquering the international scene, discerning the True from the False, and the trend seekers from the devout is a difficult chore. But make no mistake, Old Man's Child are True. They do not create vampiric operas like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth, but their songs are every bit as epic. Elaborate orchestrations bring together the mighty riffing that once came from England in the early 1980s with guitar terror that has been stirring in Scandinavia for the better part of this decade. Haunting keyboards stir up dusty, nostalgic atmospheres. Scratchy, earthen voices scream words immersed in the traditions and myths of their homeland. Black pagan blasphemies.

Agathodaimon are an evocation of esoteric alchemy, a grim reminder of the darker side that hides behind the light. A cold wind blows through the castle parlor and stirs the band to create romantic symphonies of lilting guitars and reverent keyboards. But possessed by some unseen hand, some restless spirit, the band breaks into violent outbursts of hellish metallic noise, blasts of percussion and ominous drones that resound against the soul. The vocalist, Vlad, under complete possession, struggles to exorcise the demons within, evoking incantations in English and Romanian. Through him come the sentiments of the denizens of hell. He refuses to resign himself to the spirits until he sees the truth and cries, “My ruined world 's denying the earthly time; Drained of all emotions...; Immortality: Now be mine!”

Formed in Athens, Ohio, in 2003, Skeletonwitch have been buzzing around the underground scene with their juggernaut combo of true metal styles ever since. The members of The Witch -- Chance Garnette (vocals), Nate "N8 Feet Under" Garnette (guitar), Scott "Scunty D" Hedrick (guitar), Eric Harris (bass), and Derrick "Mullet Chad" Nau (drums) -- have brought together elements of classic and modern metal, thus forging the band's trademark sound of aggressive, epic, Bay Area thrash/new wave of British heavy metal soaked in modern black metal, Viking metal and melodic death metal carnage. Through persistent touring, Skeletonwitch garnered serious buzz in the underground metal scene, culminating in their deal with Prosthetic Records and the release of Beyond the Permafrost in 2007.

Varg Vikernes' Burzum produced some of the most intense and terrifying music to rise from the Black Metal movement. His legacy as a murderer, church arsonist and a renowned, overt white supremacist is now common knowledge to anyone who follows music press. Many attempt to divide his life's actions from his music, but to do so is a mistake. Few Black Metal artists have proven themselves to be as full of hate, nationalism and xenophobia as Vikernes. He stands, imprisoned, as one of the most absolute testimonials to the natural end of the culture's principles. His first four full-length recordings brim over with bitterness and bile. Piercing chord progressions move by in a ghastly blur as savage vocals spray with absolute vitriol. His later albums, recorded from his prison cell, could not be more unlike his earlier music. With only a synthesizer, he produces European folk and classical arrangements that evoke the moods of a brooding film soundtrack. When you sink into the foul, fiendish abyss of Burzum's music, you are assured that the hatred is very real.

You don't have to look very far to gauge the already legendary status of Emperor; they have dominated Black Metal (with a raised sword) since its beginning, influencing countless bands. Their music continues to push the aesthetic boundaries of decadence and excess, owing as much to Wagner as they do Venom. Tapped into something truly sinister, Emperor's combination of Death Metal and Gothic theater continuously raises the standards by which Metal is evaluated. With each recording, Emperor manage to create something more epic than the last.

Operated by Scott Conner, who goes by the name Malefic, Xasthur is a one-man black metal band based in Alhambra, Calif. Malefic formed the band with a traditional lineup in 1995 but had already taken the reins as the group's sole musician before releasing a debut in 2001,Nocturnal Poisoning. With a half-dozen split releases appearing alongside six full-length records as well as collaborations with SunnO))), over the course of Xasthur's existence Malefic has shown himself a tireless and prolific figure in the California extreme metal scene despite the fact that Xasthur never have (and according to Conner, never will) play live. Xasthur's heavily ambient music adheres to the traditional moves and production techniques of black metal but remains somewhat unique as the subject matter often deals with mysticism rather than Satanism and death, and addresses despair in a more metaphysical -- rather than "romantic" or gothic -- manner.

If you guessed from the name that they're not a Christian rock band, congratulations! Though on more recent releases Rotting Christ have toned their venom down from earlier extremes, these pathologically profane metal maestros still aim to offend with sacrilegious lyrics and brutal, brooding sounds. By integrating ambient Gothic elements into their once monolithically fast and furious tempos, this band has managed to keep its sound fresh despite its moribund preoccupations with death and decomposition. They are a classic demonstration of what sonic mutations are wrought by crossing head-banging power chord rock with the high art aspirations of Opera.

Few bands can claim the true Black Metal lineage of Abigor. Since 1993, they have created guitar epics that have challenged the history of Death Metal and emerged into the dawn of Black Metal's history. Though they are not the most unique band on the scene, their sound is among the most terrifying. Raging, raspy vocals scream horrors of mythological proportions as if straight from the flames of hellfire. Guitars roar with piercing noise as a rumbling low-end erupts from below. To the chagrin of Christians everywhere, they continue to inflict their dark wrath on an increasingly global scale, relentlessly spreading their cold, bleak visions.

A sort of Black Metal supergroup, Borknagar was formed by Oystein Garnes Brun after the dissolution of his band, Molested. Moving beyond its members' Black Metal foundations, the group has evolved into something more epic, more Nordic. Brun's vocals ring out clear as a cold wind, or hoarse as a battle cry; harmonies and keyboards take on a sinister, menacing sound. But for all the strength and aggression of Borknagar's guitars, the group still maintains atmospheric harmonies through folk progressions and blast beats. For the trainspotters, Borknagar's lineup -- which has seen some changes -- has featured the talents of Garm of Ulver and Arcturus, Bjornson of Enslaved, Infernus of Gorgoroth and Grim of Immortal and Gorgoroth.

Finland's Impaled Nazarene refer to their blasphemous brand of eardrum damage as "nuclear metal," basically a crusty, Punk-infused version of Black Metal. Marked by raspy vocals, dark atmospherics, and relatively simple songwriting, their music evokes no imagery of galloping horses or mist-filled nights -- just plain, nihilistic rage.
