The Dave Matthews Band (DMB) emblazoned the 1990s with its hybrid of jazz, folk, and world music with a distinct pop sensibility. By the end of the decade, Matthews' introspective lyrics and distinctive vocal timbre resonated through capacity stadiums across the U.S., as DMB achieved arena-rock stardom.

The son of a physicist father and an architect mother, Matthews spent his formative years in Johannesburg, South Africa, and Westchester County, New York. After being drafted by the South African military to fight in favor of an apartheid political system at age 18, Matthews retreated with his family to the U.S. for good and soon ended up in Charlottesville, Virginia. There he began writing songs on his acoustic guitar during the day and working as a bartender at Miller's, Charlottesville's premier bar for local musicians, at night. Matthews eventually began jamming with topnotch players who frequently gigged at Miller's: guru trumpeter John D'earth, fusion drummer Carter Beauford, and reeds player LeRoi Moore. By spring 1991, the Dave Matthews Band played its first concert at a rooftop party in Charlottesville with its soon-to-be permanent lineup: Matthews, Beauford, Moore, virtuosic violinist Boyd Tinsley, and bassist Stefan Lessard.

In the tradition of the Grateful Dead and Phish, the Dave Matthews Band built up a fan base by allowing fans to record and circulate tapes of the band's performances. Fan favorites like "Ants Marching" and "Tripping Billies" were revamped nightly as the band opened up ample musical space for improvisation. The band's first record, 1993's Remember Two Things, was an indie success on the college charts and eventually went gold. RCA signed Matthews and released Under the Table and Dreaming (Number 11, 1994), which yielded the hits "What Would You Say," "Ants Marching," and "Satellite." Within a year, Under the Table and Dreaming was four times platinum.

After playing on the jam-band-friendly H.O.R.D.E. summer tour with Blues Traveler and the Allman Brothers Band and headlining a few national tours, DMB recorded 1996's Crash, which debuted at Number Two on the pop albums chart. It would earn DMB a Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Perormances by a Duo or Group in 1997 for "So Much to Say." Matthews and brethren then proceeded to generate a string of live recordings. Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95 (Number Three, 1997), Live at Luther College (Number Two, 1999) (recorded on one of Matthews' acoustic-only tours with guitarist and longtime collaborator Tim Reynolds), and Listener Supported (Number 15, 1999) all document Matthews' commitment to his ever-swelling, increasingly diversified fan base. Meanwhile, 1998's studio album, Before These Crowded Streets, a series of solemn narratives about a tormented man's yearnings for his lover, debuted at Number One.

The dawning of the new millennium saw Matthews pick up an electric guitar for the first time in the studio on the uncharacteristically gritty Everyday, which was produced and cowritten by producer Glen Ballard. Everyday was actually the fifth studio disc DMB cut: they'd shelved an album recorded in 2000 with producer Steve Lillywhite, much of which made its way onto 2002's Busted Stuff. A year after that, Matthews issued Some Devil, his bow without the Band; it too won a Grammy, for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, in 2004 for the single "Gravedigger." That fall, DMB participated in the Vote for Change tour, usually headlining shows featuring Jurassic 5, Ben Harper, and My Morning Jacket, and the group launched a mail-order concert-recordings series, Live Trax. 2005 saw the release of Stand Up, DMB's seventh studio disc; it was followed in 2006 by The Best of What's Around, Vol. 1, a half-live, half-studio collection. As well, Matthews has continued to issue live albums recorded at scenic locales like Washington State's Columbia River Valley (The Gorge, 2002) and Colorado's Red Rocks (Weekend on the Rocks, 2005) as well as in urban settings like New York City's Live at Radio City Music Hall and Atlanta's Live at Piedmont Park.

Born out of the burgeoning West Coast hippie scene in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district during the late '60s, and inextricably linked to psychedelic experimentation, the Grateful Dead blended psychedelic folk music and a transformative live experience that grew into the largest, most devoted and longest lived cult following in the history of popular music. Deadhead culture rapidly became more ubiquitous than the music -- the Dead's friendly jams, laid-back tunes and open attitude towards bootlegging inspired a tightly knit community that followed the band around the country and traded tapes of concerts years after they'd been recorded. The Dead's concert performances live forever in the often-altered minds of those who attended show after show, and in thousands of hours of recorded material. The majority of these Dead bootlegs were recorded really well and sound like someone took the time to master and equalize them. Hardcore Deadhead classics like "Jack Straw" re-emphasize why the band's live shows were a musical phenomenon. Those who identified best with the Workingman's Dead and American Beauty LPs will be pleased to know that there is an overwhelming amount of well-recorded and downloadable live jams from that era when Jerry was younger, the songs were fresh, and the guitars sounded especially warm.

Before assembling the first legendary lineup of the Allman Brothers Band in 1969, Duane and Greg played together in two British-Invasion-style projects called the Allman Joys and Hourglass. Duane decamped to Muscle Shoals where he was exposed to the finest Soul and R&B players around, appearing alongside Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin. These influences fed into the gumbo of sounds that made the Allman Brothers Band's self-titled debut unlike any record that had come before it. At a time when the color line dividing the American South was still something people fought and died over, the Allman Brothers not only integrated blues and soul with swampy, Psychedelic rock and bits of country; they went one step further by including an African-American in their lineup. The twin percussive attack of Jaimoe Johanson and Butch Trucks gave early concert favorites such as "Whipping Post" and "Dreams" an elaborate architecture, which Dickey Betts and the Allmans supplemented with tidy bits of soloing, sharing leads with the poise of a seasoned jazz group. They were one of those rare bands who always sounded better live than in the studio -- Live at Fillmore East being one of those epochal documents (like Johnny Cash's penitentiary performances or MC5's Kick Out the Jams) that captures a certain music at that certain time when it's as near perfect as it ever will be. The live version of "Mountain Jam" featured on Eat a Peach (1972) is still one of the best ways to stretch a jukebox quarter into a half an hour of pure happiness.

This quintessential jam band single-handedly created a community of loyal fans with their infectious and incredibly funky jam-based rock. They are often associated with the Grateful Dead, and when you consider fan dedication, they are indeed comparable. However Phish's sound stretches well beyond psychedelic rock with a wide variety of influences, including jazz, bluegrass, folk, funk, reggae, classic rock and even barbershop quartet. With calculated tempo changes and songs that attempt to outsmart themselves, Phish are a band that either hit or miss their listener -- the same effect Steely Dan had on their listeners in the '70s. Phish have covered many artists such as Stevie Wonder, the Talking Heads, Frank Zappa and for a number of Halloween shows they wore "musical costumes" by performing classic albums -- such as the Velvet Underground's Loaded and Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon -- in their entirety. The quartet of Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon and Page McConnell played together for 15 steady years before announcing that they were putting the band on temporary hold in October 2000. This gave each member room to try various side projects. Anastasio teamed up with Les Claypool from Primus and Stewart Copeland from the Police to birth the technical wizardry of Oysterhead, and he also put together an Afrobeat ensemble under his own name during the spring of 2002. Fishman spawned two side projects: the festive Pork Tornado and the acoustic-based Jazz Mandolin Project. In addition to some keyboard work for Jack Black's Tenacious, McConnell teamed up with Oteil Burbridge (bass player for the Allman Brothers) and drummer Russell Batiste (Funky Meters) to form the explosive jam trio Vida Blue, before releasing his first self-titled album in 2007. Gordon experimented within the film industry, then did duets with Leo Kottke. All the while, many anxious Phish fans awaited the band's reunion. It finally came to pass toward the end of 2002 -- only for the band to announce a final split in the spring of 2004.

Blues Traveler formed in 1988, and it wasn't long before the band's penchant for extended jams found an eager audience. The band signed to A&M two years later and released their eponymous debut. The album failed to chart, but the band did what they do best: tour. More albums followed with similarly lackluster results, but the band continued on with a hectic tour schedule. Their aptly titled fourth album Four looked like it would meet the same under-the-radar fate as its predecessors upon its release in 1994; but the following year the single "Run-Around" was released, and the combination of MTV airplay and constant radio airplay proved to be an unstoppable force. Not only was "Run-Around" one of the best-selling singles in 1995, but Four went platinum five times over. H.O.R.D.E tours and more albums followed. In 1999 John Popper underwent angioplasty, leaving the future of the band in question. Popper recovered, but weeks later bassist Bobby Sheehan was found dead in his New Orleans home at age thirty-one.

Lowell George and Little Feat were one of the most popular Southern California Roots Rock bands in the 1970s and '80s. They were so skilled in their individual and collective musical craft that they often came across as a tightly disciplined and professional Country Rock outfit when, in fact, they were a bit erratic. Little Feat spanned the Roots Rock map, exploring various types of Blues Rock, Country Rock, and party-friendly Boogie Rock. Lowell George's almost Psychedelic approach to his trademark songwriting proved favorable among critics and musicians who formed the band's reliable cult following. The band split after George died of an overdose in 1979, only to reform in the later half of the 1980s. That Little Feat never regained the intangible and peculiar diagnostics that George brought to the table.

Like many of today's more successful jam bands, Widespread Panic earned their merit badges through arduous touring. Their music mixes brash southern rock tones with loose and lofty jazz touches that seamlessly merge with boogie-heavy blues riffs, creating songs that take you on earthy journeys into realms of joyous dance frenzy. Although their first single, Coconut Image was cut in 1986, the origins of the band go back four years prior to that when singer John Bell met up with six-string sultan Mike Houser while studying in Athens, Georgia. The duo was soon rounded out by bass man Dave Schools, keyboard player JoJo Hermann, drummer Todd Nance and percussionist Sunny Ortiz. Their debut album Space Wrangler came out two years later following Coconut Image. Although it was released on a little indie label out of Athens (Landslide Records), the production and performance sounds as rich as anything ever cut by Dire Straits. More relentless touring and a healthy, grass roots buzz got Widespread Panic a much-deserved major label deal on Capricorn Records, who released their self-titled sophomore album in 1991. Although playing on the touring H.O.R.D.E. Festival stage for two years in a row is what really thrust Widespread Panic into the limelight. Eight albums under their belt and Houser was forced to leave the band to battle pancreatic cancer. Sadly, it was a battle he lost, passing away in 2002 at the young age of 40. Guitar player and longtime friend of the band George McConnell moved in to play guitar (at Houser's request). McConnell's mid-tour departure in August '06 made way for hired-axeman extraordinaire, Jimmy Herring to finally find a home with Panic. The band continue to tour, record and grow musically, sonically following in the footsteps of the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band while nurturing their own unique signature sound that reflects a strong love of elemental music, authentic rootsy rock and innovative arrangements.

Colorado Jam Rock band Big Head Todd and the Monsters (apparently named for the outsized cranium of their lead singer and guitarist Todd Park Mohr) play a leaner, more streamlined version of Jam Rock than some of their Horde Tour brethren. The sound of the band -- which at its core is a power trio, though sometimes they augment their touring lineup with keyboards -- pivots on Mohr's bluesy baritone voice and his fluid, post-Stevie Ray guitar work. The band earned their reputation and dedicated following through relentless touring. Self-released records sold into five figures, which in turn attracted major labels. The band's first major label record sold at a steady pace, buoyed by a couple of radio hits. To date, they remain a popular concert attraction.

Dean and Gene Ween's eclectic post-modern pop defies categorization. With a wry sense of humor, in the spirit of the Dead Milkmen's "Bitchin' Camaro" or Tenacious D's "Kyle Took a Bullet for Me," Ween have thumbed their noses at any serious concept of popular music. Each album is, in fact, more a collection of Song Parodies rather than meticulously penned, Bic-worthy anthems. Their synth-driven stabs at soul, R&B, and Punk have truly achieved life-of-the-mushroom-party status. And with song titles such as "Hey Fat Boy (As*hole)," "Reggaejunkiejew," and "Mister Would You Please Help My Pony?" Ween are dead-set on having the last laugh.

Widely acknowledged as one of the world's most innovative and technically proficient banjo players, Fleck formed the Flecktones in the early '90s and then proceeded to smash any preconceived notion about what a banjo could or couldn't do. Fleck began playing banjo in high school in New York City. From the beginning he attempted to apply the theories and principles of Bebop to the instrument, blending them in with his already formidable Bluegrass talents. He spent the '80s as part of the Newgrass Revival, a group of virtuoso string band musicians intent on freeing themselves from the limitations of the genre. In the Flecktones he's supported by electric drums, electric bass and a number of keyboard instruments, and the music is really closer to Fusion jazz than anything else. The band is a major concert attraction and their records have -- surprisingly enough -- appeared on the charts and sold in impressive numbers.

Those of you who have never eaten Ben & Jerry's ice cream nor swapped cassette tapes should know that Jerry Garcia was the singer and spokesman for the Grateful Dead, one of the seminally psychedelic San Francisco rock 'n' roll bands that lasted from the mid-1960s to the mid-'90s. During the '70s, he released material under the moniker of the Jerry Garcia Band, as well. In the "other" band featuring Garcia's jazzy playing, the extended, snaky and instantly recognizable solos still took place -- only within a more focused context. With many covers in his repertoire, including songs by Bob Dylan and James Taylor, Garcia was able to stretch out and have fun, resulting in a soulful sound that mixed in bits of funk, folk and bluegrass. Adding to the rootsy feeling was a group of backing singers who created a '60s R&B vibe, offering sharp contrast to the Grateful Dead's broad, spaced-out jamming. Garcia also fronted a folkie bluegrass band by the name of Old & in the Way, releasing some impressive solo material before his death in 1995. His peaceful, gentle vocal inflections were easy on the ears, especially when he was singing watery harmonies. Garcia's innovative guitar playing consisted of infinite jams and fretboard noodling that would trail off like a lysergic hallucination. Fans and followers of his who understood this knew the man as Captain Trips. And those who love his sweet mountian bluegrass songs that he used to play with David Grisman might know him as the Grateful Dawg.

The ultimate crossover artists, Medeski, Martin and Wood bridge the gap between the New York downtown jazz scene, which features the avant-garde guru John Zorn, and the New England jam-band touring circuit, led by the popular improv-rock group Phish. And it's not hard to figure out why. Their brand of organ-trio Jazz-Funk has something in it for just about everybody. They manage to create a wide range of sounds with minimal instrumentation: chunky, Meters-esque riff-based funk; angular, Thelonious Monk-influenced jazz; sizzling Jimmy Smith-inspired organ jams; spaced-out Free Jazz musings; a dash of Acid Jazz ambience. Bassist Chris Wood and drummer Billy Martin consistently strike loose-limbed, flexible grooves, while organist John Medeski comes up with catchy riff after catchy riff, holding the particularly juicy chords for effect. Though they sometimes display their impressive chops, they're primarily groove-based improvisers, focusing on crafting a swirling, group-oriented sound.

Gov't Mule mixes 1960s-style, guitar-driven psychedelia with smoking southern rock. It's no wonder they do it so well -- they've started out with guitar virtuoso Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts and Allen Woody (now deceased) of the Allman Brothers to power their scorching bottleneck jams, making this more than any old side-project (Haynes was Duane Allman's second replacement on guitar and Woody played bass). After Woody was found dead in his New York City hotel room on August 26th, 2000, Gov't Mule decided to record their next album with Flea, Bootsy Collins and Mike Gordon from Phish filling in, instead of immediately finding a replacement. Gordon made a documentary of the process, originally titled On The Banks,(now called Rising Low) which helped propel Gov't Mule into further appreciation by fathoms of jam rock fans. Andy Hess officially replaced Woody when it came time to tour and the band added keyboard player Danny Louis to their lineup.

Their fans will tell you that seeing a live performance is the only way to truly appreciate their quirky brand of jam rock, but their studio material might give you an idea. Fancy changes, bluesy improvisations showcasing impressive instrumental mastery and a silly sense of humor make moe. a favorite among the skirt-over-pants set. After saturating the east coast (particularly upstate New York), the band soon became popular throughout the states with their Americana-branded funk. Lead bassist/vocalist Rob Derhak is the founder of the group and holds a strong lead role. He's comparable to Primus' Les Claypool, who also tends to sing and freak the bass guitar simultaneously. Two words to describe their kind of playing: funkuss ridiculossus. (We didn't say they'd be real words.)

Umphrey's McGee is often called the next generation jam band. While they're known for ever-changing set lists and incessant touring, U.M.'s seemingly endless jams bear more resemblance to prog-rock bands like Frank Zappa and Genesis. The original members (keyboardist Joel Cummins, guitarist Brendan Bayliss, bassist Ryan Stasik and drummer Mike Mirro) met at the University of Notre Dame in 1997. Percussionist Andy Farag joined in 1998 as U.M. live shows gained notoriety with wacky covers like Peanuts theme "Linus and Lucy." While album sales remained low, popularity soared as audiences continued the jam-band tradition of bootleg taping and trading. In 2000, U.M. became a sextet with the addition of second lead guitarist Jake Cinninger. One of their first productive jam sessions was in the Jimmy Stewart Ballroom of a Chicago hotel, spawning the name "Jimmy Stewart" for their onstage improv excursions. In 2002, they recorded Local Band Does OKlahoma, featuring the last appearance of Mirro, who was later replaced by Kris Myers. With a slew of studio and live releases, two DVD releases and never-ending tour seasons, U.M. remain at the forefront of the fourth-generation jam movement.

These Athens natives sound like they've followed a tour or two and picked up valuable information on group improvisation in the process. Live and programmed beats derived from Drum 'n' Bass and Progressive House drive uplifting, exploratory, frenetic guitar and meandering keyboards to create next-level jam rock. Their group intuition allows them to pull off improvised songs as if they were well rehearsed. The group now resides in Northern California and has a busy touring schedule as one of the premier jam bands around. Recorded at various shows throughout 2001, their 2002 release Seasons 01 captures these moments of spontaneity on songs that the band had often never played (and in some cases never played again).

With his funky virtuosity on the acoustic guitar and wacky songwriting, Keller Williams defies easy definition, evoking a caffeine-addled Trey Anastasio one moment and the coffeehouse jazzman on acid the next. With his trusty sampler by his side, Williams' extended improvisations have won hearts of post-Phish refugees and brought him to stages supporting new folk heavies like Ani Defranco and the String Cheese Incident. Williams grew up in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and played guitar from an early age. His first gig came at 17, and -- after a brief stint as a theater student at Virginia Weslyan College -- he self-released his debut Freek in 1994. Owing much of its approach to guitar virtuoso Michael Hedges, the record attracted some attention and, after moving to Colorado in 1995, he caught the ear of jammy bluegrassers the String Cheese Incident. He joined Sting Cheese briefly as their bassist and has issued a number of records with the group's label, SCI Fidelity.

This small-town bluegrass group from Nederland, Co. is now well on their way to big-town recognition. Influenced by hot dawgs such as David Grisman and Sam Bush, their progressive approach to the traditional twang has been labeled "Jamgrass." They recently had the honor of producing their sophomore album Town By Town with Bluegrass legend Tim O'Brien, who also plays fiddle on many of the tracks. YMSB's energy can fill concert halls, while their acoustic setup is ideal for mountain festivals such as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and High Sierra.

If you could take John Scofield and stuff him in the back of a Hammond B3 console you might get something like the sounds Charlie Hunter coaxes from his guitar. (Actually, you'd probably end up with a broken organ and an injured musician, but you get the point.) Hunter is so good he can make other guitar players cry with envy, throw down their axes and switch to some lesser instrument, such as the bass. But he's got that covered, too! Originally transcribing the fancy-footwork basslines of organists like Jack McDuff, Hunter applied them to his custom 8-string guitar, and after what must have been years of practice came up with a way to play bass, rhythm and lead guitar lines all at once. His basslines may not be the most complex, but they're an entirely tasteful backing for his Leslie-effected, organ-like rhythm guitar and his stellar chromatic solos. The band performs groove-oriented jazz, with hints of funk, spicy Latin, and even reggae (Hunter's best work may have been his cover of Bob Marley's album, Natty Dread). A must-see live, Hunter's style keeps getting more and more diverse, while his albums get better and better.

Soulive are the heirs to the organ trio tradition of Jimmy Smith, Richard "Groove" Holmes, and Reuben Wilson. Eric Krasno's contemplative guitar figures set up washes of blissful organ, which descend from the heavens through the supple fingers of Neal Evans, easing your mind with earth-bound transmissions of pure soul as Alan Evans keeps the groove going on drums. Compositions progress through multiple sections, each with its own simple, catchy melody or break, sometimes repeated until it becomes a ritual; you're satisfied in knowing exactly what's going to come next. The band's improvisations are firmly blues-rooted but branch out into some clever Bop alterations without losing their sense of melody. Krasno's soulful, fluid lines give way to funky, itchy figures well behind the beat, as Evans' organ drones its way deep into your subconscious or noisily states its purpose with Leslie-drenched squeals. These are some of the deepest soul jazz grooves going today.

Rising plain-guy stars from Richmond, Va., the Pat McGee Band specialize in a brand of feel-good rock that circulates widely in college towns across the Southeast. McGee sings in a light, casual voice somewhat reminiscent of Bruce Hornsby's, delivering vague (though generally positive) lyrics and pleasantly anonymous melodies. Percussion and mandolin augment the band's basic acoustic guitar rock accompaniments, and it all goes down smoothly, if not necessarily with a lot of flavor. But like the mid-priced domestic beers that sell abundantly at the band's frequent live shows, there's something intangible about the group's music that's kept folks coming back for more -- a reality attested to by the group's continually growing fan base.

As progenitors of trance-fusion, the Disco Biscuits fearlessly navigate a unique blend of electronica infused with the improvisational dexterity of a rock 'n' roll four-piece. Having met as undergrads at the University of Pennsylvania in the '90s, the Biscuits built a loyal following on the East Coast with their lengthy concerts, featuring inverted, dyslexic and dub versions of their songs -- with the occasional rock opera thrown in. This innovative group has managed to successfully translate their spiraling song compositions into sonically pleasing studio albums, with 2002's Senor Boombox being a sterling example. The departure of drummer Sammy Altman to medical school in 2005 led to the Atlantic City Drum-Off: two nights in front of outspoken fans to test the live chops of potential replacements. Allen Aucoin survived and joined John Gutwillig (guitar), Marc Brownstein (bass) and Aron Magner (keys) for Disco Biscuits 2.0. This touring force continues to traverse mountains, beaches and Europe to satiate the needs of an ever-growing fan base as they play larger venues and festivals.

A touring and recording act for over twenty years, this Jam Rock band's music is heavily influenced by the history of its native New Orleans. Their effortless Blues & Boogie Rock is shot through with a heavy dose of second-line rhythms, New Orleans Funk, and R&B a la the Neville Brothers. An "anything goes" approach to jamming closely resembles the ethic of bands like the Allman Brothers and Grateful Dead.

Many artists have attempted jazz/electronica fusions; this Seattle quartet is part of the minority that gets it right. Travelling all over the stylistic map, their output varies from darkly oozing ambiance ("Space Muffla") to thundering percussion showcases ("Burundi"). Brad Houser's throbbing basslines reveal a heavy Dub influence, while saxophonist Skerik proves equally adept at honking Free Jazz licks and breathy, Cool-headed moodiness. The group's use of live electronic effects -- loops, delays, samples, etc. -- lends a spaced-out vibe to much of their work, often bending their instruments beyond recognition and making it tough to tell who's doing what. While the fully improvised performances can reach inevitable dead spots, Critters Buggin ultimately succeed in offering boundary-crossing music that's capable of reaching electronic listeners who dislike jazz, and vice/versa.

Two years after dismantling Phish, one of the jam scene's most beloved institutions, Trey Anastasio continues to receive hate mail from bereft fans. But he didn't dissolve the august outfit without a lot of forethought and stringent soul-searching. He first tested the waters by recording three solo albums and forming Oysterhead, which was initially an ad hoc group with Primus' Les Claypool and former Police man, Stewart Copeland. He also performed with the Vermont Youth Orchestra, and spent time putting together various configurations of musicians and prosaically dubbing them the Trio, the Sextet, and the Octet. After first putting Phish on hiatus – effectively a year and a half trial separation -- he decided he could no longer bear to feel creatively stifled and claustrophobic, and unilaterally decided to disband the band. Rationalizing the move by explaining that Jerry Garcia might still be alive if he had exited the Grateful Dead, Anastasio left Phish in August of 2004, ostensibly to save his life. Prior to that time, he had been enmeshed in a free fall of depression and destructive behaviors. "I felt light and honest after I left," he explained in 2005. "I let myself be led by my heart and I think I did the right thing." He celebrated by recording his fourth solo album, the optimistically titled Shine, which could have been a missing Phish album. Produced by Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen knob twirler Brendan O'Brien, it went a long way to establish an independent identity for the innovative songwriter, showcasing his superior guitar playing -- which falls somewhere between Carlos Santana and Robin Trower -- and the fact that he could write a pop song that came in under five minutes. He currently heads up 70 Volt Parade, a six-member rock band. And fans can still hold a shred of hope for a Phish reunion: Anastasio is part of SerialPod, a trio featuring Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann and Phish bassist Mike Gordon.

With their questionable choice of name, Leftover Salmon may have put themselves out of the running to be canonized into the Ben and Jerry's ice cream flavor gallery of Jam Rock bands. Formed in Colorado in the early '90s as a hybrid band from the Left Hand String Band and the Salmonheads. The band describes their sound as "polyethnic Cajun slamgrass," but in resin-free reality, they blend Jam Rock with Chicano Funk and a healthy spoonful of Country Folk, Folk-Rock, and Americana. Their special guests have included Reese Wynans on keys (formerly of Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble) and Bela Fleck on the banjo.

Few musicians embrace the mad scientist aesthetic more fervently than bass maestro Les Claypool. From his Bay Area high school days spent hanging with Kirk Hammett, to co-producing Suicidal Tendencies' second album, to the formation of Primus, to his post-millennial embrace of the jam band scene, Claypool has constantly done things his own weird way. Primus is perhaps his best known, best loved achievement, one of the more memorable alternative rock bands of the early '90s, which scored cult hits with brazenly funky, punky tracks like "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver" and "My Name is Mud." Bouncing manically over Claypool's quirky vocals and rubbery bass, drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander's neck-snapping beats, and underrated guitarist Larry Lalonde's wiry riffs, the band was a loony, rhythm-driven steamroller. After Primus disbanded in 2000, Claypool immersed himself in the freeform aesthetic of jam bands like Phish and Galactic, forming the Fearless Flying Frog Brigade with former members of Primus and Col. Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains with P-Funk keysman Bernie Worrell and Buckethead on guitar. Though he was fully embraced by the jam scene, Claypool reconvened Primus in 2004 for two national tours, playing material old and new. Of Whales and Woe, Claypool's umpteenth album but first released under only his own name, was released in May 2006. After 15-plus years of innovating, he’s considered an elder statesman of sorts, albeit one who wears giant eyeballs on his head and sings about big brown beavers.

Bay Area-based guitar master Steve Kimock plays a heavily Jerry Garcia-influenced form of jam rock, but with less of a bluegrass angle and more of a spacious, laid-back jam aesthetic. (Kimock's sprightly guitar playing can also be quite reminiscent of Garcia's lead style.) Fans of the Dead and newcomers to the whole jam rock movement will want to check his band out.

Chicago band Sonia Dada's relentless tour schedule, their amalgam of jazz, rock, Soul, blues, and Gospel sound, and their exemplary musicianship have closely aligned them with the H.O.R.D.E./Jam Rock scene. The band's sound is built around three lead vocalists who sing in close harmony. The band has essentially carved its own sonic niche by taking the concept of the three singers, whose presentation comes from the tradition of Soul and Motown vocal groups, and grafting it onto a rock band with horns and Jam Rock trappings.
