These days, cop show "Hawaii Five-O" may seem cheesy so far from its '70s heyday but its title tune by the Ventures hasn't aged a day. The Ventures are the biggest selling instrumental rock group of all time: they created albums rather than just collections of songs and were able to adapt their "surf guitar" sound to a wide range of styles. The solid body Fender guitar sound of the Ventures' Bob Bogle and Don Wilson worked with surf, country, spy, and psychedelic music. Who but the Ventures could pull this off? Few have even tried. Busloads of rock guitarists profess the Ventures' influence (like the Who's Pete Townshend). With well over forty million albums sold, they are the definitive (and first) "big in Japan" act. Though their following is slightly more modest everywhere else, the Ventures will be cool forever.

The world's greatest and tightest backing band, Booker T and the MG's began as the in-house band for Stax Records. Performing on over 600 of that label's releases, they virtually defined classic soul music as we know it today. The streamlined, uncluttered guitar work and no-frills drumming is best exemplified on tracks like "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay" and their own eternally fresh "Green Onions." Unique in setting an example of racial harmony in a time of turbulence, the quartet continued breaking ground up until the mid-'70s. Records like "Melting Pot" predated Acid Jazz by about 20 years, while their cover of Abbey Road in its entirety showed they had a sense of humor. Surviving the untimely death of drummer Alan Jackson, Booker T., Steve Cropper, and Donald "Duck" Dunn continue with their prodigious output, dignity intact (save for that Blues Brothers 2000 debacle).

As a top studio band in the 1960s and '70s, the Meters recorded seminal New Orleans Funk on their own while also backing other artists, including Dr. John's classic album In the Right Place. Art Neville fronted the band, bringing his keyboard and occasional vocals to their mostly instrumental songs. On tracks such as "Sophisticated Cissy" and "Look-Ka Py Py," guitarist Leo Nocentelli and bassist George Porter provided raw unison lines and turned them into pristine models of Funk. Indeed, the Meters knew more about subtleties of rhythm and space than just about anyone. Driven by the slick grooves of drummer Zigaboo Modeliste, the Meters have been sampled by more hip-hop artists than anyone this side of James Brown. They can still be found touring together in different personnel arrangements, keeping crowds on their feet all night long.

The one-lunged guitar king of instrumental Punk rock guitar, Link has influenced everyone from Pete Townshend to the Cramps. He had a chart hit in the '50s with what is probably his best known song, "Rumble," a menacingly slow, crudely recorded instrumental meant to approximate a gang fight. Wray went on to record many more instrumental sides throughout the '60s, including "Jack the Ripper" and "Ace of Spades," both of which have been recorded many times by various Garage Punk and Psychobilly bands. Wray recorded for Polydor in the '70s, singing more and revealing a tough raw voice and a natural affinity for early rock and punked up R&B. He gained more exposure by recording and touring with rockabilly revivalist Robert Gordon in the late '70s. His early '80s album Live at the Paradiso reveals a burning live set with an intensity that performers half his age would find hard to muster. Currently living in Europe, Wray, who is nearing seventy years old, continues to tour and put out records on a regular basis. Look for him in your town.

Though something of a historical footnote to the American rock audience, Mike Oldfield is a veteran who continues to appeal to a large sector of listeners in his native Britain, more than 30 years after his debut solo album. Born in Reading, England, in 1953, Oldfield was something of a prodigy. His first LP, folk music recorded with his sister Sally (with whom he would continue to collaborate over the years), came in 1967 under the name Sallyangie. Oldfield followed that up by joining Kevin Ayers in the art-rock band Whole World, and they recorded Shooting at the Moon. Soon, Oldfield was at work on what was, quite literally, a solo project -- he played most of the 30 instruments on the album-length composition Tubular Bells. Budding entrepreneur Richard Branson bankrolled the sessions, but none of the established British labels was interested in the somewhat outre disc. Eventually, Branson founded his own company to issue the LP, and Virgin Records became the base of his empire after Tubular Bells spent months at No. 1 in the U.K. charts. The record also won a Grammy, and its main theme was used in the demonic-possession saga The Exorcist. Oldfield has celebrated the title with a 1975 orchestral version, as well as Tubular Bells II (1992), Tubular Bells III (1998) and Tubular Bells 2003.

Oldfield followed the original with Hergest Ridge, which also took top position on the U.K. bestseller lists. By 1980, he'd submerged his leanings toward progressive, proto-New Age sounds in favor of a more pop-oriented approach; Hall and Oates would even take his witty song "Family Man" into the U.S. singles charts. At the same time, Oldfield continued to display his instrumental composing talents on soundtracks to such films as The Killing Fields. Though doubtless considered more a purveyor of lifestyle music than a progressive artist at this point in his career, Oldfield has remained prolific and is looked upon as something of a forerunner of a wide variety of artists. Certainly his eclectic jaunts into various world musics led the way to the acceptance of someone like Enya. And Tubular Bells itself has long outlasted its reputation as "the music from The Exorcist."

Carrying the Instrumental Guitar Rock torch forward through the 1990s and into the new millennium, Hoey approaches everything he does -- whether it's a cover of "Wipeout," a blues number, or even a vocal song -- with the same single-minded focus on axe-wielding prowess. Furthermore, as collectors of his three-volume Christmas music series (Ho Ho Hoey!) can attest, he's proven that if you think hard enough, you can fit an erupting guitar solo just about anywhere.

This quintet has a lulling, instrumental sound that falls somewhere between delicate Shoegazer and Emo-lite. Intricate sonic soundscapes are built layer upon shimmering layer, shrouded in reverb, ambition and an air of mystery. Happy is the person patient enough to peel away the layers of sonic surprises this band offers.

Pour yourself a thick mescaline colada and put some lobsters in your pants! The lounge-a-billy sounds of Billy Strange will madly soothe you. Strange was an infamous session guitarist of the 1960s, and arranged songs for Dean Martin and Nancy Sinatra. His virtuoso guitar pickings have been studied by six-string scholars everywhere. Strange is one of those guitar players who learned how to play "wrong" and developed it into his own signature stamp of scattered strums and pristine pickings that often sound as if a flamenco player did the score for a Sam Peckinpah western.

Based in Chicago, Pelican are an instrumental metal band that combines elements of post-rock and doom metal. Massive, slow-to-mid-tempo riffs and expansive song structures have brought the band comparisons to fellow avant-metal dudes Isis. The main difference between the two bands is that Pelican's riffs tend to be more rooted in Black Sabbath and traditional stoner metal rather than the post-hardcore arty tendencies of Isis. Either way, folks who love it loud and are patient are directed to this band's eccentric canon.

Most people are going to know Steward Copeland as the man with the sticks in the Police, but he has done a lot more than sit on the sidelines, waiting for Sting to go broke. Part of the reason the Police were never truly acknowledged as a proper Punk or New Wave act is Copeland's technically proficient drumming. A truly amazing percussionist, Copeland spent time with the Progressive Rock outfit Curved Air before forming the Police with Andy Summers. His approach has always seemed to walk the line between cerebral and jungle groove. Drum tech guys melt watching him play, but he's not so technical as to alienate the lonesome Joe who just likes to dance. His natural progression towards Film Scores began as the Police disintegrated in the early '80s and by the end of that decade, he had formed another group, Animal Logic, with bass wizard Stanley Clarke. Although that group has since disbanded, Copeland continues scoring and recording -- even writing for Opera and Ballet.

Everyone who writes about Trans Am compares their sound to 1980s video game music without fail. That's because it's true! Blending driving bass riffs and drum beats that keep on keepin' on with Kraftwerk synthesizers and spare, robot vocals makes the comparison absolutely inevitable. That's not to say that what Trans Am does is boring -- it's not. To their credit, they somehow manage to make the stuff rock. Their shows are hip-shaking grin-fests, eliciting deeply nostalgic feelings that most other successful Post-Rock giants take pains to totally bury under mounds of pretension. Basically, Trans Am are just a bunch of nice guys playing geeky music. More power to them.

Guitarist Davie Allan cut his teeth writing the soundtracks of biker exploitation flicks. His recording career began in the mid-'60s and has essentially never stopped. His Surf sound began as a raucous combination of fuzztone, twang, and pounding drums that remains timeless in its simplicity. Allan continues to record and, if anything, he's now even more accomplished. He may make the same record over and over, but it's a great one.

Don Caballero remodel every aspect of how you ever thought a song should be and brutalize everything. They are the sound of repeated blows to the upper body and face. At first listen, you might think it's metal, but there is too much control to be simply that. Entirely instrumental, Don Caballero play with furious density and precision that is frightening. The polyrhythmic drumming of Damon Che and the grueling basslines constantly seem at odds: agreeing to disagree. Dueling guitars surge and intertwine, leaving no room for even a hint of soloing. Their beguiling cunning in composition and compelling time changes make thorough listening mandatory.

Englishman Howe is probably best known for his ongoing tenure with the Prog Rock hit makers Yes. This band became massively popular in the misguided mid-1970s through an unlikely combination of pop hooks and pompous neo-classical melodrama. The group was less an ensemble than a group of soloists vying for space, but their sound did rely heavily on Howe's distinctive, textural guitar work. In an era when all of his contemporaries were blues-based players, Howe based his style on jazz and country artists like Les Paul and Chet Atkins, and he was also enamored of classical nylon string playing. For a long period in the '70s he was considered the guitarist by legions of arena rock fans. Howe was also part of the chart topping Prog supergroup Asia, and has issued numerous solo recordings.

Dirty Three are a staggering display of Post-Rock perfection. Conducted by violinist Warren Ellis' woozy and wailing to scratchy and broken playing, notes seem to plead across the stage like the last few rays of sunshine across the water at sunset. The band's rhythmic foundations provide a canvas yet still speak for themselves; drummer Jim White and guitarist Mick Turner both serve and govern Ellis, their minimal and watery solutions of staggered beats and droning melodies creating both grand schemes and formless cacophony. Somewhere in this contrast is the brilliance of Dirty Three -- sounds embrace togetherness and isolation in the same moment, ultimately creating some of the most profoundly cinematic pieces ever set to the steady, immanent rhythms of joy and sadness.
