Avid skaters and surfers from Southern California, Incubus first came together as teenagers at Calabasas High School in the early '90s. They gigged early and often at rundown joints across L.A. County and self-released their first album of hip-hop-inflected hard rock and psychedelic urban punk, titled Fungus Amongus, in '95. Their second record was picked up by Sony and went gold, leading to double platinum status and Top 10 tracks from the two albums that followed. More radio-friendly than the band's earlier stuff, Make Yourself and Morning View were still bolder and more unusual than Incubus' modern rock peers, working with scathingly funky breaks and scratchy guitars and even -- with the seven-minute long "Aqueous Transmission" -- delving into sound-collage abstraction. By the '04 release of A Crow Left of the Murder, Incubus had renegotiated their contract with Sony and reached their popular peak, headlining sold-out world tours and playing festivals like Lollapalooza and the Bridge School Benefit. They released their sixth album, Light Grenades, in late 2006.

In 1986, the Beastie Boys' first album, Licensed to Ill, went off like a bomb amid the international record-buying public. The New York trio's brash hollering and sophomoric humor, along with producer Rick Rubin's brilliant idea to blast heavy metal riffs underneath, turned the music world on its ear. On their second album, Paul's Boutique, MCA, Ad-Rock and Mike D. loosed a torrent of sly jokes and deep pop culture references that, along with unheard-of production by the Dust Brothers that interlocked over 100 samples, resulted in a critical 180 for the band. This shot-calling in the rap world continued over the next two albums (Check Your Head and Ill Communication) before tapering off as the trio devoted time to developing bands on their Grand Royal label and fighting for various political causes. Their fifth album, Hello Nasty, won a pair of Grammys in 1998, and 2004's To the 5 Boroughs received critical praise. In 2009, they released the single "Too Many Rappers," featuring Nas; plans for the release of a new studio album were put on hold while Adam "MCA" Yauch underwent treatment for cancer of the parotid gland.

In this age of musical genre ghetto-ization, Prince stands alone. The Artist can get funky, he can rock up a storm, he can croon a soulful ballad, he can spin out webs of jazz piano, he can hip and he can hop. He can do it all, often brilliantly. Prince takes chances and often fails -- especially on the (hopefully abandoned) film front -- but every one of his albums is chock full of gems. Prince hasn't sustained the massive popularity he earned in the Purple Rain-crazed '80s, but that seems due more to bad publicity surrounding his tabloid lifestyle than his musical output. He can't hide the fact that he is an odd, fuzzy little man, but genius doesn't come in perfect packages. While legions of Prince's contemporaries crash and burn, he sits in his Minneapolis tower and continues to expand the boundaries of popular music.

Omaha's 311 take their name from the city's police code for indecent exposure, but amateur numerologists will have a field day parsing their identifying digits in different ways. Subtracting 311 from 1990 returns a "Does not compute" error, for instance: the band was simply too crucial to the sound of that decade. After the provisional success of the funk-rock group's first two albums, 1995's 311 wedged itself forcefully into the alt-rock zeitgeist, going to No. 12 on the album charts. Mixing up rapping, grunge riffs, vinyl scratching and mosh-able choruses, it perfectly summed up the Lollapalooza generation's smorgasbord-like approach to musical styles. With 1997's Transistor, 311 had both beefed up the guitars and dialed up the dub effects, perfecting a contrast between RATM-style rap-rock and festival-friendly reggae jams that would define the following year's live album. While alternative tastes eventually moved on, 311 continued to ply their polymorphous funk and positive lyrics; they returned in 2009 with Uplifter, their ninth album.

Toiling in LA's club circuit for years, the Red Hot Chili Peppers finally pounded their funk/rap/rock into the mainstream with 1989's Mother's Milk. Making strange bedfellows of their native LA punk rock roots and love for Parliament/Funkadelic, the Chili Peppers earned respect from people of all walks of life when they crossed over into virtually every late-1980s subgenre: rap, funk, rock and punk. They covered Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" and Jimi Hendrix's "Fire," making them the songs their own with Anthony Kiedis' revved-up, attitude-fueled song-raps, Flea's rapid-fire slapped bass and John Frusciante's whirling funk fretwork. RHCP were poised to break out of the twee pop-for-tough-guys era forever, immortalized by such offerings as "Under the Bridge," a drug addiction-themed song which may have been about the heroin overdose that killed original guitar player Hillel Slovak in 1998 or Kiedis' own drug addiction. In fact, various members of RHCP have always seemed to endure battles with the hard stuff. Following the success of 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magic, John Frusciante left the band to fight his addictions mid-tour. Jane's Addiction's Dave Navarro eventually took his place, joining after the Peppers auditioned dozens of other six-string hopefuls. Despite being a good musical fit, Navarro left the band in 1998 following the lackluster album sales from One Hot Minute. In 1999, the band reunited with a rehabilitated Frusciante and released the aesthetically superior Californication. As far as sales and tour receipts were concerned, the album was a success, much more than the lukewarm and comparatively uninspired By The Way, which came out three years later. Stadium Arcadium, the surprisingly durable band's much ballyhooed ninth full-length, is a double-disc rekindling of all things red and hot. When the album was leaked onto the Internet prior to its May 2006 release, Flea made an impassioned plea to fans to boycot the illegal version.

Recruited by Eric Burdon, War first hit the charts with "Spill the Wine," an instantly recognizable soul/rock hit that opened the door for what was coming. After one record, Burdon left to focus on his personal fade from public view. This freed up War for more success with their hybrid of soul, rock, jazz and Latin rhythms. Distinctly Southern California, their multi-ethnic lineup served as a cross section of the Los Angeles area that they represented. The horn-spiked Chicano anthems "Low-Rider" and "The Cisco Kid" spoke to an audience poorly represented in popular music. Laced with a certain street logic, War predated Rodney King with their feelgood hit "Why Can't We Be Friends?" The barrier-breaking continued until the late 1970s, when they began taking themselves too seriously. Their loose grooves had the hip-hop community paying attention, which spurred a reunion in the mid-1990s.

Pennsylvania quintet combine the adolescent humor of early Beasties with the Funk Rock tone of mid-1990s Rapcore. Crunchy guitars and furious drums back Jimmy Pop Ali's shout-raps about weed, beer and assorted sexploits. Their proudly obnoxious style won them major airplay for a minute, though once Kid Rock and Eminem blew up, all but the most loyal fans pretty much forgot about the Bloodhound Gang. They released their third LP Hooray For Boobies in 2000, and returned five years later with Hefty Fine, but failed to match the commercial impact of their earlier work.

From the looks of it, San Francisco's Faith No More lived to mix it up -- their 1985 contribution to the nascent Alternative Nation, a tangle of metal and white-boy rap called "We Care a Lot," satirized the hunger relief compilations that filled record store bins like a case of dysentery. By 1990, they introduced mainstream to The Real Thing and new singer Mike Patton. Patton's strident singing and in-your-face persona won the band wider acceptance. Subsequent records thwarted fairweather fans as FNM's sound morphed and gravitated away from the rapidly popular sound of commercial alternative radio. Though best known for "Epic," and other hit singles off The Real Thing, FNM also had a significant mad scientist streak. How else to explain their dry remake of the Commodores' "Easy" on their 1993 EP Songs to Make Love To? Their experimentation isn't so much Dr. Demento as it is Dr. Frankenstein. That said, FNM recast the Dead Kennedys' "Let's Lynch the Landlord" in the image of Klezmer-meets-Rockabilly.

Clutch play thick, greasy Metal with one foot in the '70s Hard Rock of Led Zeppelin and the other in the '90s crunch of Pantera and Helmet. Their trademark sound revolves around bloozy guitar/bass riffs and funky, stop-start drumbeats, all topped off by frontman Neil Fallon's eccentric vocals. He barks, talks, raps and emits other assorted noises in a cigarette-damaged tone. Song titles such as "The House That Peterbilt, "Elephant Riders" and "Texan Book of the Dead" offer a sense of what to expect from their lyrics -- a mix of surreal storytelling, sci-fi obsessions and self-aware redneck humor. Since their 1993 debut Transnational Speedway League, they've let go of some of their aggro tendencies, instead going in a more southern Funk Rock direction that has led some to call them a "hillbilly Primus."

In the late '80s, there was an explosion of California bands that fused the rhythms and slap bass of Funk, the guitar bombast and virtuosity of Metal, the raw sound of Punk, and even the elaborate song structures of Prog. The movement was led by bands that had been at it for years like Fishbone and the Red Hot Chili Peppers -- excellent musicians with shamelessly wild stage performances. Up in Northern California, Primus took these SoCal influences and expanded them with an unequaled talent and weirdness -- their proud battlecry "Primus Sucks!" Les Claypool's bass snaps like a rubber band in uncountable rhythms. His voice, a near emulation of his bass technique, is percussive and rhythmic, pelting narratives as cartoonish as their performances and videos. Herb (who was recently replaced by Brain from Praxis and Limbomaniacs) somehow managed to keep up with Claypool's chaos with arena rock fills. Under Primus' rhythms, Larry LaLonde's guitars leave a texture of psychedelic squealing that perpetually spins out of control. For better or worse, Primus has been instrumental in pushing Funk Metal into territory as self-indulgent as Prog, though their fan base grew greater as their music became more complex, awkward and tumultuous.

An immensely influential band that truly lived up to their name, Funkadelic was the brainchild of George Clinton, originally formed as a back-up group to support Clinton's early doo wop crew, the Parliaments (who eventually became Parliament). Blending expert musicianship, gut-bucket funk, and drug-fuelled experimentation, Funkadelic was introduced as a separate entity in 1970 (partially as a way to get around record contract constricts), when they released their self-titled debut LP. One of the group's key players (literally and figuratively) was keyboardist Bernie Worrell, whose psyched-out synth-scapes were a big part of their unique sound. Funkadelic's second album Free Your Mind...And Your Ass Will Follow dropped later that year and Maggot Brain soon followed, but it was their fourth full-length that really set the stage for major crossover success. The 1972 addition of legendary bassist Bootsy Collins, previously a member of James Brown's crack squad the J.B.s, was a huge pick-up and the core line-up of Bootsy, Bernie, and George shined incandescently on America Eats Its Young. The hit-or-miss album Hardcore Jollies appeared in 1975 (after the band signed with Warner Brothers) and included the only mildly successful single called "Undisco Kidd." All the while, Clinton and company were still performing, recording and releasing new records as Parliament. In 1978 things really exploded for both groups, Funkadelic released the undeniably classic LP One Nation Under A Groove, and hit number one with the title track. Almost simultaneously, Parliament also topped the charts with "Aqua Boogie" and "Flash Light." As the seventies came to a close, the group splintered with financial disagreements forcing several members out on their own. They put together a few more albums, but the initial magic seemed to be missing. Both Clinton and Bootsy began work on solo projects and ever-rotating members continued to tour for several decades as the P-Funk All Stars. Clinton's drug problems and legal woes continued through the years, but his music would play a crucial role in the development of hip-hop (especially on the West Coast), as various rap producers concocted new songs based on older Funkadelic tracks. In particular, Dr. Dre's landmark gangsta rap masterpiece The Chronic introduced a whole new generation to the wonders of P-Funk.

The prodigiously gifted bassist Bootsy Collins was a professional player as a teen in the musical hotbed (seriously) that was Cincinnati in the mid to late 1960s. He took the slapping and popping bass style of his hero, Larry Graham (bassist for Sly & the Family Stone), and brought his own low-down outrageousness to it. By 1970 his band was James Brown's backing band, recording and playing with the Godfather of Soul. Collins then joined George Clinton's band Funkadelic and helped them define their over-the-top Acid Funk sound and look. He hit the top of the R&B charts with Bootsy's Rubber Band a number of times in the late '70s. Collins remains a huge international star and a big influence on hip-hop artists, who have sampled his basslines countless times.

One of the original bands to effortlessly cross genres, Fishbone trailblazed a blend of Funk, Punk, Ska and Metal that was neither forced nor unnatural. A crazy horn and guitar filled amalgamation backed up by a virtuoso rhythm section makes up the backbone of their live show, while frontman Angelo Moore leaves behind most traces of sanity when he goes onstage. Though it has never been reflected by their record sales, Fishbone have garnered enough respect over the years to establish a cult following, and many newer bands such as No Doubt and Sublime owe a good deal of their success to the pioneering efforts of Fishbone.

Porno for Pyros saw Perry Farrell reining in the sonic excesses of Jane's Addiction for succinct pop that brought to the fore his unique vocal style and coupled it with a variety of lightly psychedelic touches. Exotic rhythms from ex-Jane's drummer Stephen Perkins added spice to the swirling "Tahitian Moon," while the Pyros' biggest hit "Pets" (1993) relied on more of a laid-back campfire groove with flared guitars. Nothing they've done thus far could ever allay the Jane's Addiction purist, but listened to with an open mind, the songs of Porno for Pyros are hard to dislike.

More than almost any other '90s band, Brad stubbornly defy stiff categorization, as snatches of Funk, Soul, Post-Punk and Post-Grunge permeate each of their releases. It's no secret that Pearl Jammer Stone Gossard is the Brad's guitarist and highest-profile member; however, their heart, soul and ace in the hole is undoubtedly vocalist/keyboardist Shawn Smith (also of Satchel and Pigeonhed), a singer with an extraordinary range and a disarming presence that sets the tone for each song.

Formed in the late '60s, these San Franciscans sounded like Tower of Power with Janis Joplin on lead vocals. In their songs, punchy horns and organ jabs ride over some exceptionally tight funk drumming, with everything centered around the soulful wails of Lydia Pense. Guest artists such as the Pointer Sisters helped enhance the sound, but Cold Blood never had the hit they needed to break out. Rumored to be reunited.

Eddie Hazel was born into a good home. His mother, Grace Cook, moved to Plainfield, New Jersey, in order to raise him in a safe, drug-free environment. The professional silk-weaver taught Eddie piety and respect, and was understandably upset when a 17-year-old Eddie told her in 1967 that he was touring with George Clinton and his doo wop group the Parliaments. Four years later, the Parliaments' doo wop had turned into Funkadelic's acid freak out, and Eddie had earned the moniker "Maggot Brain" for his epic ingestion of drugs. While recording Funkadelic's third album, Clinton instructed Hazel to "play like your mother just died." The resulting 10-minute epic, "Maggot Brain," is an exploration in isolation and despair, and is hailed as the one of the greatest guitar performances in funk. In 1974, an increasingly demented Hazel was jailed on drug and assault charges. Dropped from P-Funk, he spent the next few years recording his lone solo album, Game, Dames & Guitar Thangs . Later, suffering from chronic stomach pains, Hazel is forced to move in with his mother. It's Christmas, 1992, and he's dead at the age of 42.

Hi, kids! Want to take a brief walk through history? Urban Dance Squad (UDS) smashed together funk, rap, metal and loopy turntablism to create a distinctive sound. All this was achieved during the prehistory of Rapcore with the release of Mental Floss for the Globe (1990). It proved to be a genre-blurring album that was many things: fun, goofy, and occasionally preachy, with great ear-candy arrangements, bluesy slide guitars and expert scratching. The wonderfully groovy, slinky single "Deeper Shade of Soul" made a dent in Billboard's Hot 100, charting in at No. 21. But this auspicious beginning marked the end of their affair with stateside success. That single along with the insanely catchy "No Kid," (also from Mental Floss) proved UDS were in step with Beck's yet-to-be-released Post-Modern Pop anthems -- just as Persona Non Grata (1994) revealed their penchant for bracing Funk Metal. So close your books, grab your headphones and show appropriate appreciation for Urban Dance Squad's superb musicianship and wild imagination. Who says show-and-tell is boring.

Defunkt are one of those never-quite-caught-on, tragically flawed bands who have nonetheless garnered a group of loyal followers. Led by Joseph Bowie -- brother of famed trumpeter Lester -- the group explored a pioneering combination of Funk rhythms, punchy horns, rock guitars and a penchant for jazzy improvisation way before others decided to do this. The problem, as with many bands from the 1980s, came from the high potential for cheese -- half of the songs they put on album were stinkers. The level of musicianship was always excellent, with slap/pop bass from Melvin Gibbs holding the bottom end for the horn and guitar solos. A range of excellent musicians played on the albums, including guitarists Sonny Sharrock, Bill Bickford and Vernon Reid (later of Living Colour). Surprisingly, after a recent reunion Defunkt have kept their quality level high, showing their immense potential on live recordings.

Former Dead Kennedys' guitarist East Bay Ray lends his guitar skills to this Funk Rock band. Recorded in the early '90s, these songs reflect the popularity of Funk at the time, as heard in the work of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As good as they are, Skrapyard don't let East Bay Ray's unique guitar style shine, which is a major disappointment.
