The heavenly harmonies and melodic Folk-Rock of CSN&Y was born in the uncanny chemistry of David Crosby (from the Byrds), Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield), Graham Nash (the Hollies) and Neil Young (also from Buffalo Springfield). The supergroup formed in 1968 (Young was added in 1970), and continue to sail a wooden ship of melodic soul into the new century. The salient aspects of the band's updated sound poke out in the form of harsh, angular, electric guitar tones and glossy, allocated riffs. The production is obviously much more pristine and glossy than the quartet's first album, Deja Vu, but they still manage to stamp their signature vocal style on the sound, traversing from melodic pop to acoustic folk to Hard Rock.

A longtime fixture in the Bay Area music scene, Michael Franti is known both for his eclectic, highly creative music, and for his ardent activism. He got his start as a founding member of the Beatnigs, an aggressive, industrial jazz duo formed in the mid-eighties. After one album with them, he formed the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, a rap group whose main purpose was to educate listeners about the widespread lyrical ignorance in hip-hop. The group released one LP, scored a minor hit with "TV: The Drug of the Nation," and shared stages with everyone from PE to Jello Biafra to Nirvana. Franti then went on to start Spearhead, who, with their socially conscious message and more accessible and organic sound, fast became favorites of progressive, politically active listeners in the Bay Area and around the world. Spearhead has released four albums since 1994, and continue to perform regularly. They took part in several anti-war concerts during the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts, and toured with Ziggy Marley.

At first inspired, then disgusted, by Punk's quasi-Leftist posturing, Billy Bragg looked back to protest songsters such as Woodie Guthrie and Phil Ochs for inspiration. Picking up where Ochs left off, Bragg's recordings juxtapose intelligent social critique and tight, resonant melodies. Though in most cases he gives equal weight to these priorities, Bragg's hand is often forced by his radical political sentiments -- something which has guaranteed him a mixed reception in his native England and relative obscurity in the U.S. Even the recent collaboration with Wilco seems to have made precious little impact on his stateside reception. Undaunted, Bragg has continued sculpting poetic songs from a rare alloy of politics and lyricism. Sometimes joined by a band, but usually opting to go it alone with his guitar, Bragg's performances and recordings have helped preserve folk's capacity for social and political relevance.

Begun by guitarist and singer Tom Gabel, Against Me! was a folk-punk cult fave in the college town of Gainesville, Florida for years before breaking into the mainstream in 2005. Initially Gabel played his songs in anarchic shows inside local laundromats. In 2003, the band signed to Fat Wreck Chords and Gabel began to move in a more rock direction. Searching For a Former Clarity came out in 2005, along with a video that was a far cry from the group's anarchy-punk roots.

As the heart and soul of premiere '70s punk band the Clash, Joe Strummer's rasping yelp and politically charged messages can be identified within seconds by just about anyone born before 1980. The Clash's ever-evolving hybrid of punk, reggae and rock 'n' roll immediately influenced an entire generation of bands, and that influence continues today -- with groups such as Rancid and the Pietasters still borrowing heavily from London Calling (1979). Since the breakup of the Clash in 1985, Strummer has released precious little music, instead producing other bands and doing a little acting on the side. His return with the Mescaleros was a natural extension of his earlier work; the new stuff recalled Sandinista!'s fluffier explorations, but with more direction, more structure, and an even broader world music feel. The pop changes were a little more obvious and the techno beats were a new addition, but Strummer hadn't changed too much. He stopped calling for a white riot, and instead just asked for a little peace and quiet so he can play with his band. He died in 2003.

The Call write melodic and richly textured rock songs imbued with new agey Christian mysticism, centered around the soothing, sonorous voice of Michael Been. The band was briefly buffeted aloft as New Wave crested in the 1980s; since then, Been has remained relatively active both with the Call and as a soloist. Recent releases maintain the same quality of earlier works, but tend to be more contemplative than their rousing hit, "The Walls Came Down."

Hailing from Portland, Ore., the dyke-rock capitol of the Northwest, Team Dresch have been instrumental in pushing the limits of the Riot Grrrl movement. Headed by namesake and president of Chainsaw Records, Donna Dresch, this all-female quartet pumps out an explosive, supersonic sound ranging from punk-metal harangues against homophobia and sexism to slower, jangly pop songs about youth's lost loves. Jody Bleyl, who also beats the skins for Indie-rockers Hazel, picked up full-time vocal duties after singer-songwriter Kaia Kangaroo left the band to pursue her solo career. With the Vegas Beat's Marci Martinez and Amanda Kelly rounding out the current roster, Team Dresch continue to make noise in the music industry with both their thunderous Power-Punk and their fiery brand of radical feminist politics.

Although hugely controversial in the late '70s Punk era, primarily for his extreme leftist stance, which he expounded on through his music, Tom Robinson has since gone the way of the cult star. Covering everything from early Punk, to New Wave, to his more recent folky sound, Tom Robinson deserves credit as one of Punk's most interesting -- sometimes outlandish -- and always outspoken pioneers.
