Gaelic Storm were catapulted to a fame -- of a sort -- when they made a
cameo as the band performing during the steerage party in James Cameron's
epic film, Titanic. The scene was symbolic in some ways: the group
has always spanned two continents, founded by native Cork man Patrick Murphy
and New York's Steve Wehmeyer -- both of whom play an astounding array of
instruments that includes bodhran, piano, accordion, digeridoo, spoons and
harmonica. With the addition of Englishman Steve Twigger, the band first hit
its stride in live performances in Southern California, where they
discovered that audiences responded instinctively to their rollicking mix of
Celtic folk and rock 'n' roll. (It can't hurt that Murphy's singing voice
bears more than a passing resemblance to that of the famous, groundbreaking
Irish singer Christy Moore.) Picking up an assortment of members over the
years, the group has now swollen to six members and has seen several albums
soar to the Top-5 of the Billboard World charts.

Lamprey-mouthed vocalist and legendary boozer Shane MacGowan first cut his teeth in punk band the Nips before packing up his DIY bags and moving on to Celtic rock with the Pogues. It was a daring move that has produced some of the most original-sounding music of the post-punk era. Red Roses for Me heralded the arrival of a band brashly defying convention simply by adhering to tradition. As a permeable ensemble of a half-dozen or more players, they were able to incorporate traditional instruments hitherto unheard of in rock 'n' roll. Mandolins, concertina, tin whistle, the dulcimer and the bodhran gave the Pogues their distinctly Irish sound, and in Shane MacGowan the band possessed an ace writer fitting squarely into the Irish literary heritage. Songs like "The Old Main Drag," "A Pair of Brown Eyes" and "Hell's Ditch" indicate that, had he been so inclined, MacGowan might have written books to put on the shelf with Flann O'Brien, Brendan Behan and the Joyce of Finnegan's Wake. Not many bands could wear the hoary epaulets of the label "National Treasure" and pull it off, but the Pogues were such a band.

Restless as the seafaring nomads whose chanties and airs they borrowed from, the Waterboys called no one style of music their own, but roamed the oceans and passage of time for sources of inspiration. Mike Scott and his ragtag troupe of aging folkies, pub buskers, and salty punks crafted with an artisan's care scrappy Folk-Rock that resonated with romantic, vaguely new age themes. Fisherman's Blues (1988) -- containing interpretations of Van Morrison, the Beatles, and W.B. Yeats -- captures them at their most adventurous. On the title track, Scott's tearful whelps and scotch-scorched vocals reach a fevered emotional pitch that infects the entire album. At a time when rock 'n' roll had brought to the brink of extinction instruments like the mandolin, bouzouki, and accordion, the Waterboys repopulated music with them, giving their songs a timeless quality. The results were never less than majestic.

Hothouse Flowers' passionate fusion of Celtic-tinged Roots rock and Gospel music sets the Irish group apart from the vast majority of their contemporaries -- with the possible exception of Van Morrison, with whom they share much in common. Bono signed Hothouse Flowers to U2's Mother label in the mid-'80s after seeing the band perform on a late night television show. They recorded a single that did fairly well, but it was the celebrity push that directly led to the Flowers' subsequent deal with PolyGram. With a strong out-of-the-gate start, Hothouse Flowers' debut album People went to No.1 in Ireland and peaked at No. 2 in Britain. Subsequent releases produced similar results in most countries bar America, where, despite their considerable talent and cult following, Hothouse Flowers failed to break through. The band was quiet during most of the late 1990s and has recently started touring again. In 2004, the band made a spectacular return to form when they released their seventh album, Into Your Heart.

Fronted by Scottish singer Angela McCluskey, Wild Colonials offer Roots and Celtic-influenced pop -- although while listening to duets with the likes of bluesman Dr. John or Cyndi Lauper, you get the feeling that McCluskey can sing anything. They signed to DGC/Geffen in 1994 and released two albums for the label before they were dropped. Not to be thwarted, the band released Reel Life Vol. 1 -- which is actually the recorded history of the band's many soundtrack endeavors -- on Indie label Chromatic Records.

Paddy Casey was discovered busking in London, so right from the get-go, expect that this Irishman's songs are acoustic guitar-centered. Impassioned vocals lead the charge on songs that are wishful, hungry and haunting, while a staggering starkness seeps through -- even on songs given the "big rock sound" production treatment (a la the Waterboys' A Pagan Place). Songs adorned with tin whistles and fiddles practically burst with Celtic pride, while others, dressed up in drum beats and samples, reflect Casey's love for the artistry of complex music-making as exemplified by artists such as Prince. A thoroughly engaging combination of influences are married seamlessly in Casey's work.

You don't have to go to Ireland to hear Celtic music any longer. A growing diaspora of groups like Vancouver's Spirit of the West play tradition-minded Folk-Rock with prominent touches of deep green. This is arguably the most widely diversified act of the lot. Witness Open Heart Symphony (1996), a rangy experiment that combines modern conventional Celtic instruments, alternative rock elements and sweeping symphonic flourishes. The album even contains a tribute to Radiohead (the song "Let the Ass Bray"). Blimey!

Chicago band the Drovers combine elements of Irish music, Eastern music, Appalachian string band music, and psychedelic rock, to create an ambitious blend of pop music that's all their own. The band uses traditional folk instrumentation such as fiddles, violins, bohdran, flute and accordion, not specifically as solo instruments but to create open ended textures that give their songs an eerily hypnotic effect. They also play rocking jigs and reels when necessary.

A veteran of the Irish Punk scene, guitar/mandolin player Philip Chevron was a member of that most hallowed band, the Pogues. His own compositions blend Irish and rock elements with a keen sense of pop and a bit of grist, so as not to be perfectly digestible.

Lush, even whimsical Celtic Rock from a New York City-based Irish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Turner has a lilting tenor voice and his songs boast strong melodies and engaging narrative lyrics. Turner has worked with Black 47 singer Larry Kirwan in the past, and the two have a penchant for updating the sound of Celtic music with synthesizers and other modern accoutrements.
