Like G. Love, Jack Johnson plays groovy acoustic funk. The difference is that where G. Love relies on hip-hop, Johnson's points of reference are a bit more eclectic, incorporating lite jazz and classic singer-songwriter motifs (including interesting vocal experiments a la Joni Mitchell and Tim Buckley). It's all held together by earthy rock backing and topped off with a voice that at times sounds enough like Mose Allison to convince listeners that Johnson really has the goods. Before embarking on a musical career, Johnson was a successful professional surfer. His popularity simmered with his first few albums, but with 2005's In Between Dreams Johnson's stock exploded, crossing over from the jam-rock crowd into the mainstream pop market. The record yielded hits in "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing" and "Better Together." Johnson's comfortable voice and sweet melodies translated naturally to children's songs with his 2006 release Sing-a-Longs & Lullabies for the Film Curious George. In 2008 he released a new studio album, Sleep Through the Static, and in 2009 he confirmed his live reputation with En Concert.

Too aggressive to be lumped in with today's folk-inflected singer-songwriter scene, Matt Nathanson is a maverick performer/songwriter whose material runs the gamut from arresting solo confessionals to full-band acoustic assaults. Nathanson's expressive voice competes for attention with his omnipresent 12-string guitar, while his most intense work has pioneered a new human emotion informally called "craffing" -- a swirling combination of crying and laughing which often leaves the listener exhausted yet, ultimately, rewarded.

Throughout time, there have been classic duos: Lenny and Squiggy, Cagney and Lacey, Hall and Oates. The Indigo Girls are no exception. Their pristine and luminary vocal harmonies alone make crowds hoot and holler. Each song has a totally different energy and tension. With their more lighthearted and witty songs, Emily Saliers and Amy Ray play off each other like a comedic duo. Other times, their songwriting and arrangements are so clever, you would think that the two fight crime on the side. Their musical relationship takes on many turns, loops, and jumps. Saliers' musical roots dig deep into Joni Mitchell's gentle song soil, while Ray's influences stem from a much harder background of influences, including the Pretenders and the Husker Dude, Bob Mould.

Ranging from gloriously outraged to beautifully blunt, the folk/punk poetry of radio reject Ani DiFranco has earned her a loyal cult following of beloved listeners which originally sprouted at the grass roots level, only to be sown mainly by word-of-mouth sustenance. Boasting an impressive discography roughly comprising one full-length album a year, this music industry iconoclast proves that staunch determination and dedication to the DIY ethic can lead to success. Acclaimed for her sound that is both painfully honest and respectfully real, this best-friend-next-door-turned-living-guru backs her raw, emotive lyrics and poignant acoustic guitars with an ever-evolving, multi-colored musical style that moves from candid spoken word to full-band rock, over to brassy jazz stylings, and back to singer-songwriter simplicty.

Missy Higgins came into her own (musically speaking) by mistake. She had written and recorded "All for Believing," a beautifully haunting piano ballad when she was 16 years old. The song itself was a homework assignment for a music class that she had procrastinated on, waiting until the very last minute to complete it. But it was at her sister's urging that she entered that song into a contest, eventually winning first place and getting the tune played on Los Angeles radio station KCRW, a move which prompted Warner Bros. to hand her a pen and contract. Two EPs and a full-length album later, her sometimes dark and always beautiful folk-tinged songs garner her many a positive comparison to Kate Bush and Tori Amos (although perhaps Vanessa Carlton's emotive inflections may be a closer association).

Lilith Fair has littered the landscape with acres of golden-voiced, confessional Singer-Songwriters. Don't let Nanci Griffith get lost amongst the chaff. The luminous Texan wrote and performed her beautiful mix of folk, country, and pop while Jewel was still modeling Underoos to her kindergarten chums. Griffith had a couple of minor country hits and earned the highest respect from such American peers as Emmylou Harris and John Prine, but their literate, intimate nature seem to have found an easier home in Ireland and Great Britain than America. Griffith isn't overshadowed one bit by performing songs by respected tunesmiths Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt on Other Voices, Other Rooms, a stunning document of overlooked songs.

Anyone who claims that the eccentric Juliana Hatfield is the best female songwriter to come from Boston's indie music community should really dig into Patty Griffin's discography. Albeit more folky than quirky, Griffin's sultry vocals, unraveling lyrics and melodic arpeggios all make for a hypnotizing chemistry that holds your attention every time she plays. She picked up a guitar and began playing at 16 but never took it seriously until she married and her husband encouraged her to play her music in front of an audience. Griffin made a demo tape which an A&R scout as sounding criticized overproduced. So she stripped it down and released it as her first album Living With Ghosts on A&M records in 1996.

Although you may have missed it, San Diego singer-songwriter Gary Jules released his debut album back in 1998. Greetings From the Side briefly saw the light of day as its label, A&M, was folding into Universal and dropping many artists from the roster as a result. Disillusioned, Jules took his time writing his sophomore effort, and when Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets was released in 2001, it was on his own label.
Jules' smoky, emotive voice was the perfect compliment to the sparse medium in which he worked, and the album began to create a strong word-of-mouth buzz. Fortune began to smile on Jules with the inclusion of his stunning, haunting version of "Mad World" on the Donnie Darko soundtrack. The song became a hit in many countries across Europe, and eventually the international buzz became strong enough to score Jules a deal in the States. Ironically, Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets was released in 2004 by the very same label that dropped him years earlier.

In the decade of electronica, outsider Beth Orton emerged as one of the genre's most innovative musicians. With songs that combined the organic acoustic sounds of folk with the beats of trip-hop, Orton's freshman effort Trailer Park served as a languid survey course covering both old and new. The album's success relied as heavily on Orton's beautiful vocal style -- a smoldering haze of soulful passion and exasperated sighs -- as her excellent, grief-stricken lyrics. By her second album, Central Reservation, Orton exchanged the danceable beats for a purer folk sound, with equally hypnotic results.

A singer-songwriter with a Southern sensibility and a country-tempered rock 'n' roll streak, Todd Snider (no relation to Dee Snider) has built a strong cult following through a combination of his smart songwriting and heavy touring. Snider was "discovered" by Jimmy Buffett and subsequently signed to Buffett's label. He gained no small amount of exposure opening for Buffett concerts, but there is really very little similarity between the two artists -- Snider's work is closer to a combination of Billy Joe Shaver and John Prine. His songs can be wryly funny, but more often than not they have an underlying seriousness to them. His sound is a lean blend of country and rock, with traces of Bluegrass and R&B.

In an era when the political Singer-Songwriter looked like it was going the way of the dodo bird and Reaganomics was in full robber-baron swing, along came Tracy Chapman. With her sensitive, well-crafted narratives and a voice as rich as the Mississippi Delta, Chapman re-introduced nuanced social commentary into pop music. Though her more self-consciously radical albums didn't fare as well as her 1988 self-titled debut, the hit song "Fast Car" became an instant classic with its heart-stopping vibrato and incisive lyricism. Chapman returned in the late '90s with the retro Acoustic Blues number "Give Me One Reason," which captures a slow burn rivaled only by R&B great Irma Thomas. Chapman's latest work continues in the same vein -- full of contained yet forceful emotion and refreshing, socially engaged subject matter.

Bruce Cockburn has been one of Canada's major stars for the past thirty years. A literate singer-songwriter, he has broken through to American audiences a number of times: baby boomers turned 1979's "Wondering Where the Lions Are" into a hit, "If I Had a Rocket Launcher" made heavy rotation on MTV and AOR radio, and the alterna-rock generation went for "Call it Democracy" in a big way. For the past decade, Cockburn's sound can be likened to Daniel Lanois-produced Dylan or Robbie Robertson. His records are beautifully crafted, and each one has at least a couple stand-out tracks that feature exquisite musicianship. His spoken word pieces, however, don't equal his alternately personal and topical songs. His work is greatly admired by Lucinda Williams, Ani DiFranco, and T-Bone Burnett, and all three have recorded with him. Cockburn deserves such distinguished company.

Shaunna Hall co-founded the hugely successful rock group 4 Non Blondes with Linda Perry, Christa Hillhouse, and Wanda Day in 1989. In 1990 the group won the S F Weekly Award (Wammies) for Best Rock Band. The multi-platinum Bigger, Better, Faster, More!! released by Interscope Records in 1992 includes five compositions by Hall (Morphine & Chocolate, Spaceman, and others) and guitar performances. The album was a worldwide success. The band sold millions of records, peaking at number 11 on the Billboard Top 200. "Spaceman," was released as a single in 1993 and peaked at #39 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Hall left the band in 1992 during the recording of Bigger, Better, Faster, More! over musical differences, especially with the producer. The group compelted the album with session guitarist Louis Metoyer. Roger Rocca joined 4 Non Blondes in 1992, after the record was finished.

Singer-songwriter John Gorka has a smooth, dark baritone voice and is a nimble, inventive acoustic guitar player. His songs fall into a sort of melodic middle ground between folk, pop and country, and often feature strong narrative lyrics. He got his start in the early 1980s in Pennsylvania playing coffee houses and folk clubs, and in 1984 he won the coveted New Folk Award at the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas. The records he has recorded since the late 1980s have brought him a great deal of critical praise, making him a bona fide star on the folk circuit. He has lately been collaborating with Mary Chapin Carpenter's longtime producer/guitarist John Jennings, and his records have taken on a crackling Folk-Rock edge.

Infamous Angel (1992) was an auspicious debut, roundly praised by critics, that fell through the cavernous cracks in the public's appetite for non-commercial country. Songs more honest and moving than "Sweet Forgiveness" and "After You're Gone" are rarely heard: the emotional stingers they leave deep within the listener burn worse as time goes on. It's Dement's gift to convert tiny packages of painful experience into vocal honey so it's easy going down, but these songs pack one heck of an emotional hangover. Dement's no Nashville hothouse flower to whom tick mattresses and gingham dresses are as foreign as distant stars -- she's got the scrappy tough voice and sensibility of a woman who's faced poverty and personal loss and keeps a piece of them within to remind her of where she's been. My Life (1993) and The Way I Should (1996) proved Dement is an artist capable of consistently releasing albums as remarkable as her debut.

Best known for her Adult Contemporary hit, "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" in 1992, Hawkins has made a name for herself as an original songwriter unwilling to follow music industry protocol. The cleverness and originality of her arrangements aren't immediately noticeable, which might explain why her songs are rarely hits upon release. It generally takes a bit of time for folks to realize there's much more below the surface. Needless to say, fans of Hawkins' ornate and often eclectic folk-pop tend to be much more devoted than one would expect in the Adult Contemporary world.

Lanois is best known as a record producer. He began his career in a basement studio in his native Canada, working on small projects until he began collaborating with producer Brian Eno. Lanois became Eno's protege, which eventually led to his producing Peter Gabriel's So and U2's The Joshua Tree. After that, Lanois became one of the most sought after producers in the business. His sound is characterized by the use of odd instrumentation, analog recording equipment, and a tendency to place the mood of a song above playing it perfectly. The best examples of his production aesthetic can be found on three of the most critically acclaimed records of the '90s: Chris Whitley's debut Living With the Law, Emmylou Harris's Wrecking Ball and Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind. As an artist Lanois writes subdued, somewhat oblique but very melodic songs that are grounded in his own off-kilter vision of what folk music is. He has a deep interest in his French Canadian roots and often sings in French.

Once a member of The Story (an artistic folk project that sounded it should have been on the 4AD label), Jonatha Brooke now creates forlorn, moody modern folk with sad lyrics and sultry female vocals. Her textured, whispered voice stretches up in peaks, similar to the Cranberries' Dolores O'Riordan (without an Irish accent).
Bloom, born Barry Moore in Ireland, is the brother of famed Irish folk singer Christy Moore. He recorded a handful of records under his own name in Ireland before coming to America to forge an identity outside the shadow of his more famous brother. He changed his name and developed an open-tuned, heavily processed acoustic guitar sound that was almost orchestrally full, freeing him from the constraints of a backup band. He scored a deal after developing a devoted following, which grew with the release of a series of critically acclaimed records. One of his more interesting experiments is an acoustic treatment of rapper LL Cool J's "I Need Love," done as an impassioned, straight-faced love song.

He has tapped into our collective unconscious to reveal our struggles, desires and emotions with witty clarity and profound meaning. At one time calling Virginia, Austin, Santa Fe and Portland home, Moore first began to garner attention in 1993 with the folk-rock group ThaMuseMeant. Additionally, he's teamed up with indie rockers the Slip to form Surprise Me Mr. Davis, a side-project reminiscent of the Band backing Bob Dylan. All the while, he's found time to release seven solo albums on Frogville Records, which he co-founded. He continues to play solo and with both bands at festivals and small clubs. Whatever musical setting serves as his creative outlet, Moore's lyrics always speak to his contagiously glass-half-full outlook as both a traveler seeking wisdom and a prophet dispensing insights. Like his forebears, names like Dylan and John Prine, Moore is a soul-shaker.

With a delivery that, at times, sounds just like Dylan, Dan Bern's modern day folkisms are the sort of cleverly worded, tongue-in-cheek, quasi-jaded masterpieces that aging, gainfully employed hippies go nuts for. Whether rambling along with his acoustic guitar or backed by a small country-prone band, Bern's acute observations on modern life and love, as well as his talent for hooks that sound just like those of the 1960s, is coffeehouse folk that's hit the big time.

"Unplugged" was a term reserved for electric appliances when Peter Case left the Plimsouls for a folk solo career. Case's Geffen albums were critically lauded but even praise from Bruce Springsteen couldn't get the general public interested in them. Case's downbeat songs of sin and salvation may not be what the masses want, but they still show off his strong pop sensibilities. Besides great songwriting, his albums feature top musicians like Ry Cooder, T-Bone Burnett, and Roger McGuinn. 1995's Torn Again rocked harder than anything he had done since the Plimsouls, and Case reformed the band in 1998 for a short run. He still records under his own name and his new Vanguard releases show that he remains at the top of his game.

After garnering some notice for his ragged 1990 debut album The Trouble Tree, New Jersey-based Midwestern transplant Freedy Johnston stunned the record industry when his second independent release Can You Fly sold an unprecedented 40,000 copies. The record was full of both brilliantly edgy Folk-Rock songs and somber ballads, and topped a number of music polls in 1992. Johnston was snapped up by Elektra, who promptly put on the full-court press for his next record. Produced by alt-rock superproducer Butch Vig, This Perfect World (1994) yielded a minor hit with "Bad Reputation." Johnston maintains a large loyal following and continues to put out smart, challenging records.

Originally from Hawaii, Poi Dog Pondering have survived as many location changes as personnel shifts since they left their Hawaiian home in the early '90s. A trio at its constant core, they were originally a life-embracing, World music-tinged Folk-Rock band. They have since adopted -- and mostly discarded -- electronica for a richer, lushly orchestral acoustic pop sound. Led by the dynamic Frank Orrall, Poi Dog are definitely worth your time and attention.

A mostly contemporary covers collaboration between three of the biggest names in Modern Folk: Dar Williams, Richard Shindell and Lucy Kaplansky. Curiously, they chose not to cover the Johnny Cash song they apparently took their name from. The songs they did choose are certainly interesting, though; they include R.E.M.'s "Fall on Me" and the Nields' "I Know What Kind of Love This Is." Memorable performances nearly untainted by the push and pull of most collaborations.

One of the first Adult Alternative singer-songwriters, Michelle Shocked got airplay all over America with her single "Anchorage." The album it was pulled from, Short Sharp Shocked (1988), found itself on a heap of "best of" lists, but she hasn't been able to sustain any sort of mass popularity (an extended fight with her label hasn't helped). Shocked remains an above average songwriter, but her talents are now obscured by the legions of modern female folkies who followed in her wake.

Since 1984, Bill Morrissey has been releasing introspective albums. His recurring theme seems to be about growing up and living in a desolate small town. Often searching for the silver lining in Northeast clouds, his deep and dusty voice can unpredictably hit high notes that sound as organic and effortless as his cathartic songwriting. His relevant version of folk is often tinged with well thought-out arrangements and modern instrumentation.

English Singer-Songwriter JWH first emerged in the late '80s to a certain amount of acclaim and strong comparisons to Elvis Costello. This is not surprising, since he used Costello's backing band the Attractions on his debut record. After a number of albums, he has settled into his role as a folksinger with a nod towards leftist politics and an ability to assimilate certain newer styles such as using drum loops and samples into the Folk-Pop fern.

Stecher is quite simply an extraordinary musician and invaluable national resource. A multi instrumentalist capable of dazzling playing an a multitude of stringed instruments including fiddle guitar mandolin and banjo, Stecher has been a sideman to David Bromberg and Jerry Jeff Walker as well as Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. He is a singer of stunning depth, able to give traditional Appalachian songs a deeply personal feel and transport the listener to a different time and place. Stecher often works with singer/multi-instrumentalist Kate Brislin, who is a star in her own right on the West Coast Country-Folk & Bluegrass scene and has played with a veritable who's who of Progressive Bluegrass and folk performers such as Tim O'Brien, Laurie Lewis and Mike Seeger.

Born to a nearly absentee father (jazz saxophonist Preston Love) and a schizophrenic mother (Wini Winston, a singer in Preston's jazz band), Laura Love grew up in and out of foster homes in Lincoln, Nebraska. She got her start as a musician with a gig at the Nebraska State Penitentiary, before moving to Seattle and joining grunge-blues outfit Boom Boom G.I. At age 25 she learned the bass, which became the staple instrument of her solo career. Developing a style that blended funk with folk, blues with bluegrass, hip-hop with riot grrrl rock, Love used her music to espouse her own feminist and leftist politics and to explore the issue of race and her own racial identity (she is part white, part Native American, and one-eighth African American). Love released three albums on her own label, Octoroon Biography, before recording five more albums on various major labels, starting with Polygram. In 2004, Hyperion published her autobiography, You Ain't Got No Easter Clothes, accompanied by an album of the same name. Love has opened for the likes of Bo Diddley and Lyle Lovett and headlines her own shows on the festival and college circuits.

Jennifer Berezan's slick, AAA-like folk songs incorporate equal amounts of country and Lite Rock, resulting in a pure, contemporary sound. Though she got her start in the 1960s, it wasn't until 1992 that she released her first record Borderlines on Flying Fish. Her songs are primarily concerned with women's issues and she is a stalwart member of the women's folk movement.

His now standard "The Garden Song" has been covered by everyone from Arlo Guthrie to the Muppets, but other material of his has been chosen by such luminaries as Emmylou Harris and Kathy Mattea. Alternating between straight folk songs and countrified acoustic numbers, he sings in a crisp friendly voice and will appeal to the country fan as well as the folk fan.

Self-professed "all-American, Jewish, lesbian folksinger" Phranc got her start in the late '70s Punk rock movement with synth rock band Nervous Gender and reggae Goth band Catholic Discipline (a band that would be immortalized in the first installment of the Decline of Western Civilization movies). During this period, she would sing some of her more political songs acoustically to allow the audience to clearly hear her words. It was these performances that eventually led to the discovery of her voice as an acoustic folk artist. During the span of her early solo releases (Folksinger and on), she discovered her niche -- a voice for not only the gay and lesbian community, but for the socially conscious everywhere. Phranc's music is often humorous in approach, but the underlying message is always based on serious subject matter.
