Van Morrison stands out in the youth-obsessed, disposable world of modern pop music. A grouchy fireplug of a man, he has earned a loyal following that's always kept guessing as to what direction he'll take next. Since the beginning, Morrison has ignored all fly-by-night fads and in doing so has amassed a timeless body of work. Coming out of Them's primal R&B-fueled Garage Rock, Morrison's 1968 Astral Weeks was a daring, exploratory work that painted a bleak picture of the acid generation, while Moondance (1970) was a breezy celebration of life. These albums have set the stage for an artist who freely mixes soul, folk, blues, jazz, and his native Celtic influences into highly personal, idiosyncratic music. Only a handful of his later albums are masterpieces on the level of No Guru, No Method, No Teacher (1986), but each release contains at least one brilliant track. A private man, Van Morrison is more comfortable talking about heroes such as Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, or Jerry Lee Lewis than himself.

The Bee Gees made whiney falsetto hip, wide polyester collars the height of high-rolling fashion, and defined cool for an entire generation. A '70s supergroup who actually began as a brothers act in 1959, the Bee Gees have proven remarkably versatile throughout their long career, unafraid to experiment with everything from country to R&B to straight pop balladry. They scored a number of hits during the 1960s and early '70s with shimmering hits like "I've Got to Get a Message to You" and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart." Some of the Bee Gees' most memorable tracks stemmed from the height of the disco era, culminating in 1977's Saturday Night Fever soundtrack with tunes like "Night Fever," "How Deep is Your Love," and of course, "Stayin' Alive." Lush harmonies, symphonic arrangements, and a tendency to reinvent themselves when the going gets tough have made this band one of the longest-running pop acts around.

There was a time in the early 1980s when the breezy pop of Hall and Oates was inescapable. Next to The Righteous Brothers, the duo is probably the most famous Blue-Eyed Soul group in the world. They hold the record for most Top-40 hits as a duo with twenty-nine -- as many as the number of years the group has been around. The band started in the late 1960s in Philadelphia with a sound that drew from folk and rock, but especially from Soul, particularly from the sounds of Gamble and Huff's Philly International Records. Based around Daryl Hall's sweet expressive tenor and John Oates' backup vocals and guitar work, their early hits "She's Gone" and "Sarah Smile" didn't give any real indication of the chart dominance the band would have begin in 1980 when their album Voices started a string of hits that didn't diminish for another five years.

British soul-pop chanteuse Adele (nee Adele Laurie Blue Adkins) is a stunning young talent with a huge voice. After she recorded a few songs, a friend set up a MySpace page for her in early 2005; record execs discovered her there in their hunt for the "next Lily Allen." After signing to XL, she suffered from a terribly ill-timed case of writer's block -- that is until she fell in and out of love. A breakup opened the floodgates of emotion and creativity, resulting in her debut album 19. Inspired by great soul dames like Etta James and Billie Holiday and other singers such as Bjork, Jeff Buckley, Dusty Springfield and Jill Scott, Adele's sense of staggering, heartbreaking honesty and artistry are evidence of her superwoman resilience and everywoman experiences.

George Michael's brand of over-sexed, white boy soul defined the fantasy life of an entire generation of teenage girls. From the poppy, bubblegum lyricism of Wham! to later, more ambient fare, Michael has always had a finger on the pulse of pop (despite some lengthy hiatuses), sliding his silken vocals into a series of arousing, danceable albums.

Judging by his name, he should be from Italy. Judging by his sound, he should be from Southern California. Judging by his looks, he should be from North Hottieland. But blue-eyed soul sensation Paolo Nutini came from humble origins in Paisley, Scotland. The former fry cook got his start in the biz as a roadie for a friend's band. His break came in early '03 when he won a pop quiz and the chance to open for TV-approved singer/songwriter David Sneddon. Nutini -- only 17 at the time -- quickly picked up a manager, garnered buzz from local press, and moved to London to get serious with his music. He singed to Atlantic and released a debut album, These Streets, which hit UK charts at No. 3 and was released to great hype in the US in early '07. Around the same time, Nutini was nominated for a Brit Award for Best British Male Performer.

At first glance it may come as bit of a surprise that Annie Lennox has had such a successful solo career, seeing as her androgynous fashion sense and the music she made with the Eurythmics helped define the 1980s pop scene. But Lennox has managed to beat the odds, with an artistically rewarding solo career that's done even better financially than her old band. Diva (1992) boasted the excellent single, "Why" (which showcased the Scotswoman's love for classic American soul), while her follow up, Medusa, frosted pop classics with an icy Euro-synth sheen. Surprisingly, when Lennox reunited with her old Eurythmics partner Dave Stewart for 1999's Peace, the album sold respectably but didn't perform as well as her solo discs. After a divorce, Lennox returned with 2003's Bare, which was even more biting and acerbic than her previous work, but was embraced by an adoring public just as warmly.

The Backstreet Boys originally built up their massive fan base in Canada and Europe; it wasn't until the 1997 release of second studio album Backstreet's Back that they grabbed the ears of millions of teenage girls in the U.S with their intensely sweet, danceable pop. Just when the band's popularity seemed to be peaking, things began to unravel. In July 2001, a tour was put on hold when A.J. McLean checked into rehab. McLean had barely rejoined the tour when tragedy struck: a close associate of the band died on one of the hijacked planes on September 11. The group soon regained its strength when Greatest Hits Chapter 1 was released. The album featured the single "Drowning," which once again put the Backstreet Boys back on the pop charts. But the next year saw Nick Carter getting arrested and the band filing a multimillion-dollar breach of contract lawsuit against their record label. It didn't come as much of a surprise, then, when the Backstreet Boys announced in early 2003 that each member would focus on their own projects. But it wasn't long before they returned as a group to the spotlight with 2005's Never Gone. Two years later, they came out with Unbreakable.

Robin Thicke -- or just "Thicke" as he was known until 2005 -- is the product of a strong, if slightly sappy, musical lineage: his mother is adult contemporary singer and soap star Gloria Loring and his father is Alan Thicke, who played Jason Seaver on Growing Pains and penned family-friendly theme songs for game shows like Wheel of Fortune and (with Loring) sitcoms like Diff'rent Strokes. After dabbling in acting as a kid, he set his sights on a career in music, and was fortunate enough to befriend Andre Herrell, the president of Uptown Records. He began writing pop hits for artists like Mya, Christina Aguilera and Marc Anthony, while focusing his own oeuvre more on the funkiest blue-eyed soul this side of Jamiroquai. Songs like "When I Get You Alone," which sampled Walter Murphy's disco hit "A Fifth of Beethoven," made fans out of the likes of Usher and Pharrell, who signed him to the Neptunes' Star Trak label.

With his soulful pop howl, James Morrison is a British singer and songwriter with more grit than the post-Coldplay soft boys next to whom he is often filed. Morrison started playing piano and guitar as a boy in rural England, and won over the British pop scene when he was only 20-years-old. His first single, "You Give Me Something," immediately topped singles charts in the UK and the LP that followed, Undiscovered, rose to the top of UK album charts when it was released in July of 2006. Undiscovered saw a US release in March of 2007.

Growing up in England on a steady diet of classic American soul, it wasn't long before Joss Stone realized she had the same gutsy, impassioned vocal style as many of her idols. Leaving home at 16, she landed in New York and auditioned for S-Curve Records, which quickly signed her. The British teen headed into a Miami studio with Southern soul stalwart Betty Wright, who produced/mentored/cajoled Stone's sessions to fruition. Stone's debut, the aptly titled Soul Sessions, was released in late 2003 to much critical praise. Her breakthrough single, a stunning version of the White Stripes' "Fell in Love With a Girl" (except she called it "Fell in Love With a Boy") helped her cultivate an audience and broadened her fan base. Stone's sophomore album, Mind, Body & Soul, was released in September 2004.

With his chipper dude-next-door appeal and background in pro surfing, it'd be easy to mistake Donovan Frankenreiter's biography with that of blockbusting folkie Jack Johnson. In fact, California-born Frankenreiter and Johnson were friends before either had successful music careers -- they met when Frankenreiter rented a room from Johnson's parents while on a Hawaiian surfing junket. Johnson released Frankenreiter's debut LP on his own Brushfire label in 2004, a warmly received collection of easygoing folk pop that underlined their musical kinship. Frankenreiter moved to Lost Highway in 2006, self-producing Move By Yourself, which yielded some modest radio success. Pass It Around appeared in 2008, also on Lost Highway. For it, Frankenreiter called in his musical idols, champions of corduroy sounds like Ben Harper, Grant-Lee Phillips and G Love.

Simply Red had two slightly differing profiles on either side of the Atlantic. In England, Mick Hucknall's stylish white-soul outfit were superstars on the order of Sade or Rod Stewart. Their albums were lifestyle accessories for young professionals living the good life. In America, though, Simply Red were viewed as a pretty good group with a couple of hit singles. Their following was wide, ranging from Top 40 listeners to acolytes of the smooth-jazz scene. Founded in 1984 by one-time punk Hucknall (the Frantic Elevators), the band issued its debut, Picture Book, the next year. A cover of a somewhat obscure R&B song by the Valentine Brothers, "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)," established a left-of-center image for Simply Red. It was the next single, "Holding Back the Years," that was the true smash. A pulsing mid-tempo ballad, it made No. 1 in America and seemed to promise clear skies for Hucknall and company. Instead, Simply Red's U.S. fortunes proved hit or miss. "The Right Thing," from 1987's Men and Women, was a minor hit, but it wasn't until another remake -- this one of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes' dramatic "If You Don't Know Me by Now" -- that Simply Red really made impact again in the States. Since then, the band has been something of a cult act in America, as the likes of Stars (1991) sold millions of copies in its homeland. Despite lineup changes over the years, Simply Red have continued recording. Hucknall has also contributed mightily by way of the Blood & Fire reggae reissue label, which he co-founded in the mid-'90s.

Englishman Palmer came off like some sort of nattily attired blue-eyed soul man, nonchalant and oblivious to anything that is going on around him except the music. His first hit was a version of Allen Toussaint's "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley" on the album of the same name, which also found Palmer collaborating with Little Feat's Lowell George and recording with the Meters. After that, Palmer scored again with the song "Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)," which followed what would become his formula: a little hard rock, a bit of reggae, and a bit of blue-eyed soul. In the mid-1980s Palmer had his biggest hit with "Addicted to Love," a smooth blend of dance rhythms and crunching electric guitars. No doubt its chart success had to do with its video, which featured Palmer singing in front of a phalanx of zombie-like supermodel "musicians." Palmer passed away in 2003, at age 54.

As soon as Rick James' main squeeze proved herself a great singer there was no looking back. Never to be confused with a ditzy bimbo, she quickly started writing and producing her own work. Marie weathered R&B barbarians at the gate during the 1980s but she fell victim to the diva onslaught of the '90s. This is a shame because Marie remains one of the best Soul singers around and could teach the current crop of young upstarts about getting funky with feeling.

They may not be brothers and only the lord above can say if they are truly righteous, but there is no denying that the Righteous Brothers have recorded some of the finest melodramatic, soul-drenched ballads in history. Two of the many songs they recorded with Phil Spector remain on heavy radio rotation: "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" and the operatic, intense "Unchained Melody." Their blonde good looks and dusky R&B voices are believed to have led an intrepid sociologue to coin the term "Blue-Eyed Soul."

During the British pop invasion on Yank shores, Dusty Springfield kept Swinging London alive with the sounds of American Soul and Vocal Pop. Like a tea-sipping combination of Peggy Lee and Dionne Warwick, she brought some much needed class to the pimply pop masses. Her voice, a husky but subdued instrument, purred rather than roared -- her love of R&B filtered through her British reserve like light going through a diamond. This approach worked perfectly on material written by her favorite teen drama tunesmith teams, Goffin/King and Bacharach/David. Going stateside, she recorded the sublime Dusty in Memphis with Aretha Franklin's production team. Instead of being a down-home gritfest, it contains her most glistening, uptown material. The perfect summation of a career.

The post-twist New York and Long Island club scenes bred the (Young) Rascals, an outfit whose sound grew more sophisticated as time went on but stayed rooted in the blue-eyed soul that was its first reason for being. At first a hard-hitting band reminiscent of the early Animals, the Rascals drew from the same well that fed the then-burgeoning garage rock scene. Their first single, "I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore," began with a fearsome rumble that opened out into a tough but subtle R&B performance. It wasn't a huge national hit, but the next one was. "Good Lovin'," a cover of an Olympics ("Western Movies") tune, became the first of three No. 1s for the group. "Groovin'" came after Top 20 hits with "You Better Run" and "I've Been Lonely Too Long," and spent an entire month at the top. Its softer sound also helped pick up a number of remakes, including one by fellow Atlantic recording star Aretha Franklin. By now, of course, the Rascals were relying on their own material, mostly written by singers Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati. They continued their run of hits with lush records, including "A Girl Like You," "How Can I Be Sure" and "A Beautiful Morning, and dropped the word "Young" from their name at this time. They went on to release the psychedelic-tinged "It's Wonderful" and their biggest 45, the gospel-influenced "People Got to Be Free." After that, singles seemed more of an afterthought; like tracks pulled from increasingly ambitious LPs rather than songs designed for maximum impact on their own. Brigati and guitarist Gene Cornish left in 1971, and the new lineup of Rascals packed it in the following year. Their great records -- featured on a number of excellent CD collections -- still ring out. The Rascals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

Justin Timberlake can cut a rug like nobody's business, and Maroon 5 know their Chic inside and out. Yet arguably the funkiest blue-eyed soul man since Daryl Hall lives across the pond. Much like the legendary Arthur Russell and later Matthew Dear, Lidell is a pop singer with a background in esoteric dance music; he and Cristian Vogel, under the name Super Collider, released two albums of quasi-ambient electronica in the late '90s. The Brit approaches soul music more like a producer meticulously constructing sonic collages than a traditional frontman. Although his debut Muddlin Gear was a continuation of his interest in pure sound, Lidell turned into a straight-up crooner for 2005's Multiply. In addition to a host of standard, non-electronic instruments, the album features him making a clutch of sounds -- from the punchy percussion to the falsetto backup singers -- with just his voice (a feat he wowed audiences with when he toured in support of the album). But while that's a novel trick, Lidell clearly understands soul's vast history. He is as well versed in the post-'70s era (Prince, D'Angelo) as he is in the classics of both Northern and Southern soul. Then again, soul is a shadowy quality that lives somewhere beyond knowledge and skill. Some folks have it; some don't. And Lidell certainly does.

When you grow up in Lafayette, La., you pretty much have to go out of your way to find bad food or bad music, as Marc Broussard can attest to. The son of Ted Broussard (guitar player for the Boogie Kings) never had to go far to be surrounded by a myriad of musicians of all styles (albeit mostly Cajun or roots-related). Perhaps that's why traces of Dr. John, a young Lee Dorsey and various other soulful singers can be heard in his voice. His sound is more twangy than tangy, but not as full-blown "alt country" as someone like Jay Farrar.

Formed in Los Angeles by songwriter Gregg Alexander, the New Radicals' brand of retro-leaning, blue-eyed soul made a dark horse run at the charts in the late-1990s with the surprise hit, "You Get What You Give." Surprisingly, Alexander dissolved the band after the one hit to concentrate on writing and producing music for other artists, scoring big with songwriting and production credits on U.K. heartthrob Ronan Keating's Destination album.

Pop crooner Rick Astley saw a few moments of fame in the late '80s when his rounded bubble of a voice chanted Hallmark sentiments such as "Never Gonna Give You Up" and "Together Forever" over untiring dance beats. He certainly deserved the fame; his voice was deep and relatively powerful. But all things fade, and Astley reportedly grew tired of the singer-puppet image foisted on him by his production team. Astley hasn't released much material in the years since.

At the dawn of the new millennium, American Neo-Soul artists such as Eric Benet and Adriana Evans are rediscovering the smooth, flute-tooting R&B of the 1970s. England's Lisa Stansfield spent the hip-hop-mad '90s traveling that path, but stopped off for a little Barry White-influenced Disco before scoring big with the uptown Soul of her self-titled third (and best) album. She has always been a sensitive singer, and Stansfield's first starring film role in Swing finds her belting out jazz and R&B standards in front of a classy big band.

Soon after Paul Weller disbanded the Jam, he formed the Style Council with keyboardist Mick Talbot. The duo initially wanted to explore organic pop music outside of guitar rock including soul, jazz, and folk. The band hit the ground running with a string of hit singles such as "The Long Hot Summer," "Speak Like a Child," and "A Solid Bond in Your Heart." The Style Council even found the stateside success that had always eluded the Jam when "My Ever Changing Moods" and "You're the Best Thing" rode up the U.S. charts. Weller was so re-invigorated during the Style Council's early period that many of his best songs appeared on their first two albums and on a flood of E.P.s and non-album singles. But even as the band's sound was beefed up by the addition of drummer Steve White and singer D.C. Lee, the Style Council's output become spottier and more tied to contemporary R&B and dance music. Weller was still penning some fine pop tracks during this period but he disbanded the Style Council in 1989 and he returned to soulful guitar rock for his highly successful solo career.

The Foundations formed in the late '60s, bringing a soulful, commercial, successful blend of pop and R&B to an England that seemed to lack its own vision. Made up of a group of Englishmen and players from the West Indies, the Foundations were a unique sight in the racially conscious United Kingdom. Imagine Motown without the charm school aspect, and you've got the Foundations. They hit number one in the U.K. in '67 with, "Baby, Now That I've Found You" as well as number one in the U.S with "Build Me Up, Buttercup" in '69. The Foundations found a much deserved resurgence of interest when the former track was included in the film soundtrack for guffaw-fest There's Something About Mary in '98.

In an era dominated by unwashed rock gods with goatees and affected temperaments, Hanson seemed unlikely candidates for recognition. For starters, they cared less about purging their tortured souls than creating songs that were the aural equivalent of sugar cubes. Secondly, they had the cherubic exteriors to go with the angelic harmonies (bright, beaming faces and boy-next-door smiles), and seemed wholly uninterested in donning a stitch of flannel. Hanson were less than innovative -- their music recalled Bubblegum so sweet it made the New Kids on the Block sound like Alice Cooper -- but their ability to craft a catchy pop tune was so on-the-head that even uninterested parties found themselves singing "MMMBop" under their breaths and trying to no avail to remove the song from where it stuck like glue between their ears. Fact is, Hanson's brand of sticky pop tastes so good going down that it's nearly impossible not to like. And while they aren't pioneers in their field, their success opened a flood gate that allowed a deluge of sugar-obsessed acts to wash away the dingy remains of Grunge.

Paul Young was nearly inescapable on American pop radio and MTV in the summer of 1985. The soulful Brit had turned to like-minded Yanks Daryl Hall and John Oates for "Everytime You Go Away," a song from the duo's Voices album that ended up a No. 1 single for Young. Surrounded by up-to-date production, his rough-edged yet honeyed approach to the ballad made it an irresistible hit.

By the time of his U.S. triumph, the Bedfordshire, England-born singer was already a superstar in his homeland. After brief tenure in Streetband ("Touch") and the retro-soul unit Q-Tips, Young appeared as a backing vocalist on Squeeze's "Black Coffee in Bed." A year later, in 1983, his debut solo disc, No Parlez, was released. Sonically somewhere between high-gloss New Wave pop and classic Memphis soul, the album also claimed a similarly eclectic track listing: the Waylon Jennings hit "Love of the Common People," Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart," Marvin Gaye's "Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)" and former Nerves ("Hanging on the Telephone") member Jack Lee's "Come Back and Stay" were among its finest moments. It produced three Top 5 U.K. singles, including a No. 1 in the Gaye song, and sold more than a million copies in Great Britain alone. Young also appeared on Band Aid's 1984 benefit song, "Do They Know It's Christmas?"

The Secret of Association featured "Everytime You Go Away" and a follow-up single, the Hi Records-born standard "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down." While Young never quite matched that chart performance again, he had established himself as a U.S. radio presence. Soon he was a go-to guy for both programmers and movie music supervisors. Another cover, this time the Chi-Lites' "Oh Girl," helped sustain his profile, and the Kathy Bates film Fried Green Tomatoes drew on a Young version of the Motown favorite "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted." While voice problems led to a curtailment of his work later in the 1990s, Young is fondly recalled on both sides of the water. His side project Los Pacaminos issued an album in 2002.

Gabriella Cilmi hasn't been in this business (or for that matter, this world) long, but she's made some pretty significant headway: Growing up in the suburbs of Melbourne, Cilmi started singing with bands at age twelve, including a stint fronting a Led Zeppelin cover band. In 2004, she got discovered by a Warner rep when she gave an impromptu performance of "Jumping Jack Flash" at a street fair. At age thirteen, she was wooed by major labels and offered at least four deals. And then, at age sixteen, this Italian-Australian phenom released her debut album, Lessons to Be Learned, in Australia and scored herself no less than six ARIA awards. Lessons was released stateside the following year, in 2009.

Hothouse Flowers' passionate fusion of Celtic-tinged Roots rock and Gospel music sets the Irish group apart from the vast majority of their contemporaries -- with the possible exception of Van Morrison, with whom they share much in common. Bono signed Hothouse Flowers to U2's Mother label in the mid-'80s after seeing the band perform on a late night television show. They recorded a single that did fairly well, but it was the celebrity push that directly led to the Flowers' subsequent deal with PolyGram. With a strong out-of-the-gate start, Hothouse Flowers' debut album People went to No.1 in Ireland and peaked at No. 2 in Britain. Subsequent releases produced similar results in most countries bar America, where, despite their considerable talent and cult following, Hothouse Flowers failed to break through. The band was quiet during most of the late 1990s and has recently started touring again. In 2004, the band made a spectacular return to form when they released their seventh album, Into Your Heart.

On the Garage-ier side of the Bob Seger Sound System and the Hard Rock-ier side of the Stooges you got Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, bulldozing through a dumptruck hybrid of Soul and Punk. Covering Little Richard and Wilson Pickett with the same aggressive intensity they lend to Stones and Chuck Berry songs, Ryder and band relentlessly pound you with The Rock. Anyone who has never heard their massive cover of the Velvets' "Rock and Roll" really needs to. Air guitar play is strongly encouraged.

Bobby Caldwell helped define the Smooth Jazz sound with his 1978 R&B hit "What You Won't Do For Love." A fine songwriter and singer, he has now transformed from a blue-eyed soulster to a classic '50s crooner. His decision to use Sinatra's and Bobby Darrin's original charts and tempos has turned an original stylist into an excellent karaoke singer.

This Finnish stunner became a Grammy-winning star in her homeland at the tender age of 13. By age 17, Janita moved to New York City, eager to use that nod as a launching pad to conquer the rest of the pop world. She immediately earned strong notices for her live shows and cut her first Stateside release, I'll Be Fine, in 2001. The independent release got some exposure on smooth jazz radio and went on to earn universally strong reviews from a startling array of publications, including the Village Voice, Marie Claire and Billboard. Janita's sophisticated mix of 1970s soul, world rhythms and smooth jazz recalls past acts such as Sade, Swing Out Sister, Anita Baker and Everything But the Girl, rather than her peers in the R&B world. Janita's sophmore CD, Seasons of Life was just as strong, and got picked up and repackaged by Lightyear Entertainment in 2006.

Anyone who turned on a TV or radio in the 1980s is no doubt familiar with Boy George's coy, soulful vocals and androgynous look. From 1982 to 1986, this charismatic artist fronted the hugely successful Dance Pop band Culture Club, whose playful energy and colorful style made them cultural icons of that era. Though Boy George continued to release solo records of mixed quality after the band's demise, he received little support from fans in the U.S., save for a small cult following. After years of obscurity here but relative success overseas, Boy George burst back into the public eye in 1992 with a song from Neil Jordan's film The Crying Game. Since then he has steered away from club-geared pop, experimenting with folk-tinged ballads in an effort to find a more intimate vehicle for expression.
