One of the most idolized and imitated figures in the rap game, the legacy of Tupac Shakur is truly monumental. The Oakland emcee got his start as a dancer with Digital Underground before making his mark as a top-notch actor and hugely successful solo artist. He released his first album 2Pacalypse Now in 1991, followed by starring roles in the films Juice and Poetic Justice. His second album contained the player anthem "I Get Around" and the ode to struggling sisters "Keep Your Head Up." In addition to his rising celebrity status, Tupac also saw numerous run-ins with both sides of the law. In 1994 he released Thug Life, was shot several times in NYC, and was convicted of sexual assault. Me Against The World (1995) debuted at No. 1, while Pac was sitting in jail. Bailed out by Suge Knight, his Death Row premiere All Eyez On Me -- the first hip-hop double album -- featured the hit "California Love" and easily went multiplatinum. On September 7, 1996, Tupac was shot repeatedly in Las Vegas and died six days later. Numerous theories continue to surround his murder; some blame Bad Boy, others think Suge set him up, while legions of believers think he is still alive. Many new albums and compilations have continued his career posthumously, with "Changes" getting massive airplay in 1999. Tupac's murder remains unsolved.

Since he stole the show on Dr. Dre's genre-defining masterpiece The Chronic, Snoop Dogg's laconic, rubbery flow and goofy gangsta persona has been a hip-hop institution. His Doggystyle (1993) became the first debut album to hit the charts at No. 1. After a rancorous split with Death Row Records, Snoop moved to Master P's No Limit label. In the late '90s, he began working with Dre again, resulting in standout tracks like "Bitch Please," "Still D.R.E." and "The Next Episode." Not content with simply rapping, Snoop has appeared in such feature films as Training Day and The Wash and put in work with companies as diverse as Nike and Hustler. Now 15 years into his career, Snoop Dogg is a high-powered mainstream celebrity, but still stays true to his music. His sixth solo record Paid tha Cost to Be da Bo$$ dropped in late 2002, followed two years later by R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta). In 2006, Snoop released the excellent Tha Blue Carpet Treatment and reunited the Dogg Pound for the summer single "Cali Iz Active." He scored another huge hit in late 2007 with the sleazy "Sensual Seduction" and subsequent 2008 album Ego Trippin'.

Irrefutably one of the most important artists in the history of hip-hop, if not all popular music, Dr. Dre has amassed an astonishingly impressive body of work over his lengthy career. He got his start as a DJ in Los Angeles, was a member of the World Class Wreckin Crew, and in the late 1980s formed NWA. Dangerous though their lyrics were, Dre's production was equally important to the success of the group. His knack for unforgettable beats, funky basslines and cinematic depth proved the perfect accompaniment to their confrontational rhymes. Dre left the crew after their third record, and in 1992 released The Chronic, an untouchable masterpiece of California Gangsta Rap. Chock full of Parliament/Funkadelic basslines, high-pitched synths, and lolo-rockin' beats, track after track of G-Funk gems propelled the album to the top of the charts, made Snoop Dogg a household name, and changed the sound of hip-hop forever. In 1999 he produced Eminem's hugely successful The Slim Shady LP, followed several months later by Dre's long-awaited sophomore release, 2001. The album proved that Dre's already incredible talents were getting even better, with elaborate, orchestrated production perfectly balancing funkiness and complexity. Trendsetter, talent spotter, mic-ripper, and producer extraordinaire -- after more than fifteen years blessing speakers around the world, Dr. Dre is still at the top of his game.

Longevity is rare in the temperamental world of hip-hop, and many artists blow up simply to fade away. Cube, however, is one of the chosen few whose career is still in full swing after more than 20 years in the game. Bursting on the scene with NWA's 1989 classic, Straight Outta Compton, he helped develop Gangsta Rap, a style which would become both highly controversial and immensely popular throughout the following decade. He soon split from the group and began his solo career, releasing legendary and influential records at a prolific rate. His hardcore, no-holds-barred rhymes about life in the ghetto fascinated listeners worldwide. Over the years, his style and content has evolved from criminal to militant and political, from rap star to club rockin' celebrity. Backed with stellar production from Dr. Dre, Sir Jinx, the Bomb Squad, and many others, Cube is certain to command a lofty place in hip-hop history, due in no small part to his astonishing versatility and sheer volume of quality work. And while his legendary status in hip-hop is cemented, one of his most important contributions is opening the door for rappers to have careers in Hollywood. He has acted in and/or produced a diverse array of movies, such as Boyz N Da Hood, Friday, Are We There Yet?, and Barbershop.

Whether you think the New Boyz encapsulate a vibrant new culture or the death of hip-hop probably depends a lot on your age. But the Boyz do have a lot of energy, and they have managed to stitch together a style -- sonically and aesthetically -- that is distinctive. Their fashion sense (tight jeans, retro concert tees, derby hats) is firmly urban hipster, while their productions recalls the skeletal retro hip-hop of the Cool Kids. Their video for "You're a Jerk" was one of the biggest YouTube hits of 2009 and inspired a dance that involves a lot of knee bends and sudden drops.

The Game, the heavily hyped emcee representing Compton debuted with a bang, kicking off 2005 with his first major label album The Documentary. His success is practically guaranteed, thanks to a strong allegiance with Dr. Dre (who signed him to Aftermath and produced several tracks), and profitable partnerships with Eminem, 50 Cent and G Unit. A self-proclaimed member of the Bloods, his rap career started in 2003 after getting shot and left for dead in a drug-related robbery at his home. Recovering from his wounds, he listened to dozens of classic hip-hop albums and decided to become a rapper. The studying paid off, as Game's 2005 debut, The Documentary, is widely considered among the best West Coast hip-hop album of this decade. A much-publicized split with Fiddy (complete with random gunplay) helped both parties sell more records, but unfortunately it also forced a split with Game's mentor, legendary producer Dr. Dre, who was financially entangled with 50. The Game spent the next year professing his undying love and respect for the good Doc, but it was all for naught and Dre didn't contribute one beat to 2006's oddly named The Doctor's Advocate. Still, the final joke may have been on Dre, as the album received widespread critical praise.

Proud owners of one of rap music's most unique sounds, Cypress Hill first introduced themselves to the world with the 1991 neck-breaker "How I Could Just Kill a Man." A wide range of fans became instantly enamored with B-Real's freaky nasal raps, Sen Dog's psychotic back-up vocals, DJ Muggs' eclectic collection of acidic loops, and, of course, the group's frequent reference to their favorite hobby. Whereas most rappers fade into the sunset after a few albums, Cypress are still going strong well into the new millenium. In 2004, they released their ninth LP, appropriately titled Till Death Do Us Part.

A hip-hop pioneer and living legend, Too Short (aka Todd Shaw) practically invented West Coast rap. He began his career slinging tapes out of his car in the early 1980s in Oakland, Calif. Merging pimp game philosophies, thick funk, and hardcore tales of freaky sexcapades, his music was made for players, macks, and gangsters -- of which Oaktown had no shortage. His following grew quickly: at one point he reportedly sold 15,000 tapes in a week. After cutting three records on a small label, Too Short released Born To Mack in 1986, which featured one of his biggest hits, "Freaky Tales," and expanded his already sizable fan base. His success continued throughout the '90s, and in 1996, after more than a dozen years in the game, he announced his retirement. Three years later, to the delight of his devoted following, he returned with Can't Stay Away. Too Short remains a hugely successful and influential figure in the industry, with frequent cameos on records by everyone from Biggie and Jay-Z to E-40 and Scarface. Very few artists approach his longevity; fewer have done so without compromising their style. After nearly twenty years and over ten albums (seven platinum), Too Short is still the Mack.

Though he'd made guest appearances with West Coast indie stalwarts Tha Alkoholics, most people first noticed Madlib when his group Lootpack released Soundpieces: Da Antidote in 1999. Madlib's rickety lo-fi productions were looser and funkier variations on the jazzy hip-hop pioneered by his NYC producers, but it wasn't until The Unseen dropped in 2000 that Madlib's M.O. became apparent. Released under the Quasimoto moniker, The Unseen was a concept album based on a helium-voiced hedonist who enjoyed "astro traveling." It was equal parts Prince Paul, Sun Ra and Cheech Marin, and remains among the most inventive hip-hop albums ever made. Madlib would continue to follow his weird muse unbridled by either commercial interest or fan expectations. In the past eight years, he recorded numerous jazz albums under different aliases, collaborated with J Dilla on Champion Sound, recorded a broken-beat album under the moniker DJ Rels, reworked both the Blue Note and Trojan catalogs, linked up with MF Doom for Madvillainy and recorded two widely acclaimed instrumental hip-hop albums. Madlib continues to push boundaries.

Unpracticed rap listeners may find themselves unprepared for E-40. Skilled ears are required to decipher the lyrics of the Vallejo superstar. Not only is his delivery a gushing overflow of light-speed syllables, but he tends to invent new words seemingly on the fly. The man responsible for at least half of the endless supply of Bay Area slang is a pioneer in every sense of the word. By the time a major label (Jive) bothered to notice him, Earl Stevens was a successful artist, label owner, and a growing lyrical legend. Before you could buy his albums at any major chain store, the tycoon known as Charlie Hustle was building his empire at local mom-and-pop record stores and across the country from out of the back of his trunk. E-40 has steadily increased his status by remaining one step ahead of the game. Every track he records is a new exercise in speech-twisting vocal innovation and another chapter in his Dictionary Book of Slang. All you need to do is listen to the lyrics of rap albums that follow his releases to know his tremendous influence among his peers.

Baby Bash's first success came as part of the Latin rap group Latino Velvet, where he was known as Baby Beesh. Latino Velvet released two albums and toured consistently, earning a loyal following in California. When the group eventually parted ways, Houston rapper South Park Mexican asked Bash to work on some songs with him. Frequent travels back and forth from California to Texas (coupled with Cali's skyrocketing rents) led Bash to relocate to Houston, where he immersed himself in the burgeoning Latin rap scene. With his heavy beats and fly rhymes constructed around solid hooks, it didn't take too long for the labels to come knocking. Bash released his major label debut, Tha Smokin' Nephew, in 2003, and scored with the single, "Suga Suga." In March, 2005, Baby Bash released his sophomore effort, Super Saucy. The album played like an ode to women, weed and whiskey (Hennessey, of course), and gleaned the radio hit, "Who Wit Me."

Though not the first rappers to incorporate unabashedly violent themes into their work (Los Angeles' Ice-T and Philly's Schoolly D were already established), N.W.A. paved the way for countless other groups with their 1988 classic, Straight Outta Compton. Backed by Dr. Dre's layered, cinematic, but funky production, N*gg*s With Attitude practically invented the term "Gangsta Rap," leading to extensive controversy, angry cops, shocked parents, and multiplatinum status. Their deadly serious subject matter came straight from the streets of South Central Los Angeles, where rampant gang banging and crack slinging had turned the neighborhood into a virtual war zone. Financially backed by profits from Eazy-E's days as a real life dopeman, the group's no-holds-barred rhymes struck a chord with both ghetto kids who lived it and bored suburbanites who longed to be hardcore. With the classic joints including the title track (which was banned from MTV), "Gangsta, Gangsta," and "Dopeman," N.W.A. exposed America to a very real mentality that had yet to be acknowledged or exploited. Undoubtedly their most infamous track was the inflammatory "F*ck The Police," which gained the FBI's attention. Ice Cube left the group after the first record to pursue a wildly successful solo career. The group dropped two more excellent albums -- 100 Miles and Runnin' in 1990 and N*gg*z4life the following year. They disbanded in '91 while feuding over earnings. Ren and Eazy continued to record marginal solo albums, while Dr. Dre blew up on the strength of his 1992 classic, The Chronic. Some ten years later they reunited (with Snoop Dogg filling in for the deceased Eazy-E), but nothing could match their original intensity. While literally thousands of emcees and acts have attempted to reproduce their street soldier sound and style, N.W.A. remain the epitome of gangsta.

Before his untimely death in 2004, Mac Dre had been a pillar of Bay Area hip-hop for over a decade. Whereas most rappers in the gangsta rap arena bank upon humorless braggadocio and empty threats, Mac Dre took a looser, more humorous approach to the genre. By exposing his lighter side, Mac Dre presented a more realistic and three-dimensional persona that endeared him to at least two generations of Bay Area hip-hop fans. Born Andre Hicks in 1970, the Vallejo-based emcee began recording in the late 1980s. His first few albums, beginning with his 1989 debut, the Young Black Brotha EP, were competent, if generic gangsta rap. He ran into a roadblock, both literally and figuratively, when he was arrested in 1991 for conspiracy to commit bank robbery. Dre continued to record while in prison and much of his work during that time dealt with various figures in the law enforcement community. He became somewhat of a martyr to the Bay Area community, and upon his release in 1996 he was one of the area's most celebrated rappers. Dre quickly capitalized on this notoriety, releasing multiple albums a year -- in 2001 alone, he released four albums -- and starting his own label, Thizz Entertainment. He was also evolving as a rapper. Whereas his earlier material was comprised of monotone flows that borrowed Too $hort's ghetto narratives and unapologetic misogyny, his later work found the emcee blending Shock G's nasally sonic smirk with E-40's love of language and odd vocal inflections. And while his rhymes were still filled with gangsta tropes, he was increasingly playful, making him more mischievous than menacing. This new approach was perhaps a side effect of his obsession with MDMA (the word "thizz" has its origins in Ecstasy usage). His 2001 track, "Thizzelle Dance," perhaps best exemplified this new approach. Taking a cue from the awkwardly ecstatic dances of E users, Dre introduced a new dance step that equally mocked and celebrated its participants. It caught on, and the word "thizz" instantly entered hip-hop lexicon, spawning an entire subgenre of imitators. When Dre was gunned down in Kansas in 2004, he was at the forefront of a suddenly resurgent Bay movement. And though he will be missed, his presence remains and is ubiquitous. Like most rappers who are gunned down, his murder remains unsolved.

From rags to riches to bankruptcy to life as a preacher, Hammer's life plays like a movie (see: VH1's Too Legit: The MC Hammer Story). His 1990 crossover classic Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em made him an international megastar. Fueled by the high-energy party jam "U Can't Touch This," Hammer took the world by storm with his trademark genie pants and simple raps over the bassline from Rick James' "Superfreak." The single was an enormous hit, and the album became one of the biggest selling rap records in history. Other hits followed, namely "Pray." Hot on its heels, Too Legit To Quit (1991) found similar success. Hammer won Grammys, appeared in commercials and even had a cartoon show; but the fickle public soon grew bored with his positive and poppy style -- Gangsta Rap was on the rise. Three subsequent albums were met with little fanfare. In 1997, he declared bankruptcy and focused his efforts on God and family, two themes heavily addressed on his Gospel/R&B album Family Affair (1998). Despite his lyrical shortcomings, Hammer paved the way for other Crossover Rap superstars. He will always be remembered for his flamboyant style, crazy moves and chart-topping hits.

Long Beach, Calif., native Warren G has been making moves since the early '90s. He was the one who first hooked Dr. Dre up with Snoop Dogg, and his work through the years has helped to further develop G-Funk's style and sound. Warren's first single, 1994's "Regulate," became an enormous hit, and set the stage for his classic debut album, Regulate...G Funk Era. The record, although influenced by Dre's production, had a decidedly mellower tone and was filled with laid-back bass grooves, fluid keyboards, smooth rhymes, and Nate Dogg's soulful crooning. His second album, Take a Look Over Your Shoulder, went double platinum and featured a remix of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff." Warren's third release, I Want It All (1999), rocketed up the charts and confirmed his status as a nice emcee and an exceptional producer. In 2001, he dropped his fourth LP, The Return of the Regulator, and he returned in the fall of 2005 with In the Mid-Nite Hour.

As the first superstar rapper from Seattle, veteran emcee Sir Mix-A-Lot blazed up the pop charts with his crossover smash "Baby Got Back" in 1992. His nasal flow, catchy production (provided by Mix, Strange, and Rick Rubin), and praising of ample booty was the perfect formula for mass success. Mix-A-Lot's party-time rhymes were more concerned with bustin' nuts than bustin' caps, and the public was feelin' it. His reign was short lived however, as Gangsta Rap became more and more popular, Sir Mix-A-Lot's star began to fade, and, though he went on to release two more albums, many dismissed him as a one-hit wonder.

As a Compton rapper and a founder of Ruthless Records, Eazy-E went from neighborhood rock-slinger to international celebrity with Gangsta Rap pioneers NWA. His distinct, high-pitch vocal style and over-the-top misogynistic and violent lyrics helped sell millions of albums for the group. In 1991 NWA disbanded, with Eazy and Dr. Dre bitterly divided over past royalties. The two engaged in a brutal dis war on wax, Dre being the obvious victor on the strength of "Dre Day." Eazy continued to make records, but never reached the status of his former partners -- Cube and Dre. In 1994 he helped launch the careers of Cleveland's Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Eazy-E died of AIDS in March of 1995.

Founded in Oakland during the late 1980s, Digital Underground are among the most innovative and original forces in hip-hop. Their 1990 debut LP Sex Packets put them on the map with two major singles, "Doowhutchyalike" and "The Humpty Dance" -- the latter introducing the world to Shock G's eccentric alter-ego Humpty Hump. Armed with charismatic flows and contagious grooves merging samples and live instrumentation, they brought forth fresh new takes on the classic foundations of George Clinton and P-Funk. With playful lyrics and experimental concepts, they crafted a funkdified, party-rocking style never resorting to gangsterisms, though sometimes sounding off on social and political issues. The group's follow-up EP was the first release featuring Tupac, whom they would later produce when he went solo. DU's multitalented lineup, including Shock G, Money B, Chopmaster J, DJ Fuze, Kenny K and others, would periodically change throughout the decade; and while mostly remembered for their early hits, they continue to put out high quality work. DU have released six full albums and continue to bring the funk with their over-the-top recordings and flamboyant live shows.

Since he first grabbed the spotlight with his hit "Born and Raised in Compton," DJ Quik has become legendary, producing tight and funky tracks both for himself and other artists. While he never reached the mega-star status enjoyed by fellow G-funkster Dr. Dre, Quik was also very instrumental in pioneering the Parliament/Funkadelic inspired movement. His tracks have all the key ingredients; full-bodied bass grooves, wheezing high-end synths, and beats custom-made for the ride. Quik has released five albums between '91 and 2000, in addition to lending his skills to a variety of artists from both coasts. His dance inducing "Pitch In On A Party" single rocked the airwaves during the summer of 2000, and 2002 saw him return with Under The Influence. A hits compilation entitled Best of DJ Quik was released that same year, Platinum & Gold Collection followed in 2004.

A funky foursome coming out of Los Angeles, the Pharcyde (Imani, Slim Kid, Fat Lip, Booty Brown,) won a wide range of fans with the release of their classic debut, Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde (1993). Fuelled by the hits "Passin' Me By," "Ya Mama," and "Otha Fish," the album was a hodgepodge of styles and influences, reflected by the crazy rollercoaster cover art. The group's often humorous rhymes and charismatic deliveries were the antithesis of Gangsta Rap, with vividly colorful and musically diverse production, and an uncanny knack for exceptional party jams. Their 1996 follow-up, Labcabincalifornia, featured a slightly more serious vibe, but continued their legacy of high-quality tracks, maintaining sonic and lyrical accessibility without selling out. They have since taken time to regroup and reorganize, with some members embarking on solo careers. An abbreviated line-up returned in 2000 with Plain Rap, while a greatest hits collection called Cydeways surfaced the following year. Although the full crew only released two LPs, the Pharcyde are without a doubt one of the most important acts of the 1990s; their originality and experimentation has influenced countless artists, who strive to keep hip-hop innovative and fresh.

Hailing from Compton, Calif., Coolio first took the music world by storm with the irresistibly friendly Funk of "Fantastic Voyage," from his 1994 debut It Takes A Thief. At a time when The Chronic-inspired Gangsta Rap was at its peak, he showed all doubters that you didn't have to rock murder raps to hit it big. The following year he scored another major hit with the dark, string-driven "Gangsta's Paradise," which became the most successful rap single of 1995. Two years later, he dropped his third album My Soul.

Down with the Bay Area's Quannum crew (formerly Solesides), Lyrics Born is an emcee's emcee. With a total command of the mic and a distinct, casual flow, he's graced an assortment of projects eagerly embraced by hip-hop aficionados around the globe. In addition to his buttery, easygoing rap style, he can also bust into funk/soul-style singing and still sound dope. Lyrics Born has been delivering the goods since 1993, and continues to light up speakers with his Quannum compadres. Check out his work with Latyrx (his group with Lateef the Truth Speaker) and appearances on various compilations (especially Quannum Spectrum) for more gems from a truly unique talent. In 2003, Lyrics Born released his long-awaited solo debut Later That Day .... The album was greeted with critical praise as well as commercial success, largely thanks to the regional hit "Callin' Out." After spending the next few years concentrating on touring, Lyrics Born returned in 2008 with Everywhere at Once, which was his first album released on Epitaph.

A much-lauded DJ and beatmaker from the San Francisco Bay Area, DJ Shadow recorded several singles in the early '90s but it was his debut LP, 1996's Endtroducing..., that really took the world by storm. Incorporating heavy drums, hyper-obscure samples, and moody atmospherics, his unique soundscapes found praise from a wide variety of listeners and critics. He's chronicled his early work on Preemptive Strike (1998) and has also recorded extensively with his crew Solesides (now known as Quannum) which includes Blackalicious and Latyrx. Shadow also contributed to the U.N.K.L.E. album, and helped put together several compilations, including Guns, Cars, and Sitars and Schoolhouse Funk. In 2000 he provided the score to the homelessness documentary Dark Days and was featured on Solesides Greatest Bumps. Shadow's long-awaited new full-length, The Private Press, dropped in 2002.

True innovators are hard to come by. There is an encouraging emergence however, in crews that know what it means to rock a mic and move a crowd. Enter Jurassic 5. Formed in LA circa '93, emcees Akil, Chali 2NA, Marc 7, and Zaakir joined forces with DJs Cut Chemist and NuMark to create original and exciting hip-hop. They met rocking open mics at the Good Life Café, a hotspot for new and creative LA bands such as Pharcyde and Freestyle Fellowship. They released their first single "Unified Rebelution" and continued to perform and evolve their own unique sound. Epitomized by charismatic lyrical interplay, tonal harmonies reminiscent of old-school NYC crews, ample turntable trickery, and a high energy stage show, true heads have embraced them worldwide. They released a self-titled EP in '97 and have appeared on numerous compilations, including Lyricist Lounge Vol.1, World Famous Beat Junkies Vol.2, and Quannum Spectrum, among others. They have also released several singles, toured relentlessly, and dropped their exceptional debut LP Quality Control in early 2000. Their old-school/new-school sound is truly infectious, familiar yet unique, and quite simply: fresh.

Coming straight outta Berkeley, feisty young skate-headz the Pack add
considerable (if not yet fully developed) muscle to the Bay Area's
increasing stronghold on hip-hop. Lil B, Young L, Young Stunner and Lil Uno
bonded over their love for skating and music long before Lupe Fiasco made
that peanut-butter-and-chocolate revelation famous. They began making music
together at around age 13, getting the word out (and getting around their
problematic youth) by playing college parties and distributing street-level
mixtapes. One such tape fell into the hands of local legend Too $hort, who
tracked the group down and worked with them to get their debut album
recorded and released on Jive Records. Even as "Vans," their
stereotype-busting ode to skater kicks, garnered the group national
attention and MTV airplay (sans all sneaker references, which MTV edited
out), the Pack didn't discard the indie tactics that had served them well in
the past: Young L continues to serve as producer and engineer on their
recordings, which are made at his mom's house, and the group's MySpace page
generated 1.6 million downloads (and counting) before a publicist ever
lifted a finger.

What are the attributes that define the expert-level freestyle emcee? Confidence, flair, and a head full of rhymes are of course characteristics possessed by all the great rappers; whether they stake their claim to fame rocking rhymes off the top of their heads or straight from the loose-leaf pages. What separates the active freestyler from their ink and pulp bound counterparts is fluid adaptability. Throughout his career, Del has adapted to drastic shifts in production styles, label situations, and financial status. He's kept on rapping no matter his position, be it major label artist, record store employee, or Indie entrepreneur. His uncanny knack for keeping fresh rhymes flowing has forged him a lyrical identity that endures from the studio to the stage to the street corner. Fans appreciate him because no matter the beat, opponent, or venue, his quick wit and lithe tongue allow him to more than hold his own.

Hailing from the City of Angels, Dilated Peoples have been delivering no-nonsense b-boy rhymes and fierce beatscapes for years. Made up of Raaka-Iriscience and Evidence on the mics, with World Famous Beat Junkie DJ Babu behind the decks, the DPs first broke through with their anthemic 1998 single "Work The Angles," produced by KutMasta Kurt. Their intense vocal presence and seriously banging beats made them instantly popular, leading to a deal with Capitol Records (who also signed their hometown cohorts Jurassic 5). They dropped the exceptional LP The Platform in 2000, followed by Expansion Team in 2001. The growling guitars are gone, replaced by grim piano melodies, deadly ambiance and Ice's darkly shadowed tales of players, prostitutes, pigs and paper.

Representing for LA, Mack 10 caught the attention of Ice Cube in the mid-'90s and released his self-titled debut album in 1995. His conversational flows stay true to trademark Cali Gangsta rap, with lyrics that rarely stray from rollin' in the hood, runnin' game on the females, and handlin' business. In '96 Mack teamed up with Cube and WC to form Westside Connection, and released Bow Down, a gangsta-pride album fuelled by the title track single. He continues to record solo material and also runs his own label, Hoo Bangin', which showcases up-and-coming Westside G's.

A standout in the impressive and influential West Coast DJ scene, Cut Chemist has earned his fierce reputation as a solo artist and member of underground groups Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli. His tracks are like intricate puzzles, a series of abstract elements brought together seamlessly through top-notch production and turntable wizardry. With conversational scratching set to instructional records, playful basslines, and rolling snares, he composes funky pieces that are simultaneously nonsensical and tight. One of the hottest names in turntable circles, Cut Chemist is a force on the wheels, and a star in his own right.

A fiery emcee with endless rhymes, Xzibit is fast becoming one of the most respected rappers in the game. Blessed with a powerful and rugged delivery uniquely his own, his grimy flows have rocked some of the hottest cuts in recent years. Down with the Likwit Crew, Xzibit dropped his debut album At the Speed of Light in 1996, followed by 40 Dayz & 40 Nightz in 1998. Backed with consistently tight production from the likes of E-Swift, Sir Jinx, Diamond and others, his intimidating lyrical beatdowns send lesser mic-wranglers running for dear life. His major singles to date include "What You See Is What You Get," "Bitch Please" with Snoop, and "3 Card Molly" with Saafir and Ras Kass (with whom Xzibit shares the Golden State Warriors moniker). Xzibit has also been working extensively with the legendary D-R-E, executive producer of his third album.

Tha Dogg Pound are one of California's oldest and most reliable groups. Core members Daz and Kurupt have been major players since lending considerable supporting roles on Dr. Dre's The Chronic. Daz's tough, terse lines contrast with Kurupt's looser, more fluid delivery, and though they had neither Tupac's backstory nor Snoop's raw charisma, they possessed two of the West Coast's most distinctive voices. Unfortunately, their 1995 bow, Dogg Food, would be their only real album for nearly a decade. Death Row's tumultuous time following Pac's 1996 death led to various tiffs between the two emcees, and it wasn't until Kurupt officially left Death Row in 2005 that they were able to reunite the following year with the warmly received Cali iz Active. That CD was followed by 2007's appropriately titled Dogg Chit.

Los Angeles duo Thes One and Double K serve up playful back-and-forth rhymes set to excellent, vinyl-centric production. Incredibly smooth vibraphone loops, earthy samples and tasty breakbeats set a jazzy, laid-back tone, while the two emcees sound off on hip-hop, crate diggin', ladies and weed. Skilled DJ work tops things off, with sweet scratches that perfectly mingle into the tracks.
A ground-breaking trio based in the Bay Area, Zion I are among the most innovative crews in hip-hop today. Comprising Amp Live on production and Zion on the mic, their multi-dimensional sound incorporates various electronic nuances and traditional hip-hop stylings while maintaining a dedicated b-boy vibe. Zion I balance excursions into drum-n-bass with straight-up, neck-bending boom-bap, and their beats are always stellar. Zion's smart and versatile rhymes weave tales of city strife and anti-materialism, while stressing love for hip-hop and respect for mankind. After a few self-made cassette-only projects, they dropped their stellar debut LP Mind Over Matter in 2000.

A butter smooth vocalist from the LBC, Nate Dogg has been laying his trademark sound on G-Funk hits from the get-go. He sang the chorus on the proudly misogynistic but absurdly fresh "Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None)" from Snoop's Doggystyle, and topped the charts with Warren G's breakout hit "Regulate" from the Above The Rim soundtrack. He continued working with assorted members of Tha Dogg Pound as well as Tupac, and recorded his solo debut in 1997. Due to legal dramas surrounding Death Row Records, the project was sat on, to be released the following year as G-Funk Classics Vol.1 & 2. He didn't set any sales records, but Nate's infectious inflections remained as nice as ever. He continued his reign as master of the hooks throughout the millennium, lending his unmistakable charm to many top ten hits. In 2001, Nate released his highly anticipated second LP Music & Me.

With precise, jazz-heated production, dexterous scratching and deftly executed lyrical acrobatics, Blackalicious take their place among the creme de la creme of the West Coast's underground community. The crew's lyrical swashbuckler the Gift of Gab is blessed (or perhaps cursed) with a brain permanently overloaded with rhymes. In his never-ending quest to rid himself of the massive pile of words that press against his skull, he hammers out gushing raps, saturating his verses with as many lines as he can discharge in a single breath. Space is rarely wasted. He often rocks beats in triple time, with frenzied freestyles that are always on point and never seem to cease. DJ Chief Xcel makes sure he never runs out of beat. With the help of guest producers Cut Chemist and labelmate DJ Shadow, Xcel keeps up with the verbal tirades by looping potent jazz and ripe Funk clips until Gift runs out of breath.

An ultra-hardcore emcee and producer out of Sacramento, Ca., Brotha Lynch Hung's brutal beats and blood-thirsty rhymes have won him a dedicated fan base and plenty of controversy. He first hit the scene in 1986, collaborating with Triple Sicx Bounty for the album N*gg* Deep. In '92 he produced X-Raided's debut Psycho Active, following it up with his own solo EP 24 Deep in 1993. He has since released several full-lengths, and worked extensively with assorted Westside emcees. Lynch's no-holds-barred, murderous lyrics aren't for everyone, but his grizzly style is impossible to ignore. A major player in the Cali underground, Lynch has since left Black Market Records and started his own label, Siccmade Muzik.

San Diego's Li'l Rob has a tendency to keep reality in check in his rhymes. He steers clear of extolling the virtues of the glamorous hip-hop lifestyle, preferring to rap about the things he sees on the streets of Southern California. Namely, cars, girls and a certain popular, smokeable herb. Lil Rob is also prone to using samples outside of the hip-hop canon. In past tracks, he's sampled bits from doo wop greats, the Cadillacs while his song "Street Days" lifts directly from Chuck Berry's "School Days."

A Gangsta Rap supergroup composed of Ice Cube, Mack 10, and WC, Westside Connection dropped their debut album Bow Down in 1996. Backed by heavy beats and booming Cali funk, the group pledges their allegiance to the Golden State, reminding listeners of their notable contributions to the game while taking aim against certain media, the East Coast, and all haters. The first album's title track soon became a hit, and introduced "Wesssiiiiiiiiide" to the contemporary hip-hop vernacular. The triumphant trio have continued to collaborate on solo and group projects. In 2003 they released their long-awaited follow up album Terrorist Threats.

J-Boogie's Dubtronic Science is relaxed aural stimulation for hip-hop heads in a kick-back mood. A San Francisco-based beat innovator, college radio DJ, and resident floor maestro at several popular local venues, J-Boogie sautées dollops of Funk, soul, Dub and hip-hop into one memorable, intoxicating at-home listening vibe, creating body-swaying grooves that cling to Ambient abstraction with a gentle urgency. Highlighting turntable mastery with itchy-scratchy hip-hop samples, wordless encouragement from an urban diva, and sexy percussion, J-Boogie's bass-heavy, sonic elixir invites you to set an intimate bedroom mood with sweet incense aromas and strategically placed candlelight. These down-tempo excursions tie you down while lapping at your ear, slowly uncovering your most remote erogenous zones and leaving you aching for more.

Among the most prolific emcees in rap, Murs has been steadily churning out blue-collar anthems since the mid-'90s. His emotionally complex narratives are tempered by more lighthearted, comic fare. But regardless of the style he's adopting, Murs almost always comes across as humble and likable. A longtime member of Cali's Living Legends crew, he built up a devoted following on both coasts and overseas in the '90s before signing with indie label Definitive Jux in 2002. After dropping the critically acclaimed LP The End of the Beginning in early 2003, Murs teamed up with North Carolina super-producer 9th Wonder (Little Brother) for 2004's excellent Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition and its 2006 follow-up Murray's Revenge. In 2007, Murs signed to Warner Brothers. Though some feared that the major label would dilute Murs' message, his 2008 album Murs for President was in the same vein as his earlier material.

Long a member of Los Angeles' fertile experimental hip-hop scene, Flying Lotus came up alongside the Dublab collective and the Plug Research label before assuming a kind of leadership role, in 2008, with the launch of his Brainfeeder label and the release of his second album, Los Angeles, on the U.K.'s esteemed Warp label. A great nephew of Alice Coltrane, Flying Lotus (Steven Ellison) isn't as jazzy as you might expect, but he definitely inherited his aunt's cosmic leanings. Running warm analog sounds through crackling digital treatments, Flying Lotus plays with psychoacoustic confusion as assuredly as he turns his boom-bap knock-kneed. By 2009, Ellison's Brainfeeder imprint was picking up speed with truly next-level releases from Ras G, the Gaslamp Killer, Dr. Strangeloop, Samiyam and Lorn. As central as he is to the L.A. scene, FlyLo proved an international pivot as he reached out to swap remixes with dubsteppers Martyn and King Midas Sound.

Since its inception, the Hieroglyphics family has been primarily responsible for expanding the definition of Oakland hip-hop beyond the pimp stylings of Too $hort -- the first artist to put the city on the rap radar. West Coast hip-hop was dominated by the Gangsta stylings of N.W.A. and Ice-T when Hieroglyphics first appeared on the scene. Beginning with their debut release, Del's I Wish My Brother George Was Here, they have ensured that California is now known for pure lyricism as well. Several albums from different members of the team followed, until the long awaited and overdue Third Eye Vision was released in 1998 -- the first album to feature the entire Hieroglyphics family. Several tracks from Third Eye Vision showcase the varied lyrical techniques of the group's huge roster of MCs.

Spearhead has distinguished itself as a band with a conscience -- and a whole lotta funk and groove. Lead singer Michael Franti first caught our ears with his biting social commentary as one half of the rap duo Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. With spot-on leftist politics and a deep, commanding voice, Franti re-emerged some years later fronting Spearhead, a more funk-based, positivistic alternative rap band. Spearhead is renowned for its phenomenal energy, the tight and passionate male/female vocal interplay, and a firm commitment to political engagement. This thoughtful band refuses to sacrifice either artistic or political integrity to the demigods of the music industry, and has enjoyed considerable success because of that.
