One of Southern rap's most enduring and talented emcees, New Orleans' Lil Wayne began rapping at the tender age of 11. By the time he was 15, he'd linked up with Juvenile, Turk and B.G. and formed the immensely popular Hot Boys group on Cash Money Records. Though the emcees showed promise, many listeners focused on the post-Bounce production of Mannie Fresh, and regarded Wayne as a fresh-faced vehicle for the producer. But Wayne went solo in 1999 with Tha Block Is Hot. His raps focus on youthful rebellion, New Orleans style -- crack, girls and turf supremacy are paramount. Lights Out, released in 2000, and 2002's 500 Degreez established Wayne as a true force in a shifting hip-hop landscape. With 2004's Tha Carter and its 2005 follow-up, Tha Carter II, he made a case for himself as the South's preeminent rapper, with a supple flow, witty lyrics and ample charisma. He wrapped up the trilogy with 2008's Tha Carter III, featuring the inescapable hit "Lollipop," and continued to expand his horizons across mixtapes, the rock-leaning single "Prom Queen" and even a performance alongside Kid Rock at the Country Music Awards.

Flo Rida (born Tramar Dillard) is the quintessential singles artist. Tracks such as "Low," "Elevator" and "Right Round" have been ubiquitous in the clubs and on the radio and have topped digital sales. Still, his debut album, 2007's Mail on Sunday, was by most measures a commercial flop. Listeners see him as essentially utilitarian. They expect him to deliver the bigger-than-God club bangers, and they'll gladly fork over for a dollar for the single, but most don't want to make any long-term commitments. It's as if Flo Rida is the hip-hop equivalent of a one-night stand. For 2009's R.O.O.T.S., the Carol City emcee attempted to break out of that pattern. The result is an album that is better rounded and exhibits a greater artistic debt.

Before his 2007 smash "Shawty," Plies was best known as the Fort Myers rapper whose entourage opened fire from the stage of a crowded club after the rapper's set was cut 15 minutes short. Following the outbreak, Plies was booked and subsequently released on $5,000 bail. The incident set back the Florida rapper's career; squeamish record label suits felt the shooting would lead to bad publicity. This would all prove to be irrelevant after the success of "Shawty," which featured celebrated R&B singer T-Pain on the hook. His subsequent album, The Real Testament, was released in the summer of 2007. By this time, Plies had developed a winning formula: dividing his album between radio-friendly love jawns ("Hypnotized," "Bust It Baby") and more street-savvy fare. In 2008, Plies managed to release two hit albums (Definition of Real and Da REAList), which was quite an accomplishment in hip-hop's diminished marketplace.

Allegedly, the real Rick Ross worked with the CIA-backed Contra rebels to secure the cheapest cocaine in America. "Freeway Rick" then turned the powder into rock -- the first time anyone had done this on a massive scale -- and kick-started a crack epidemic that spawned a generation of zombies and corpses. Rapper Rick Ross has spent his career projecting the sort of devil-may-care persona that his namesake would appreciate. First under the tutelage of Trick Daddy, and then on his own, the Miami rapper mixes bravado, menace and drug-land mayhem for nu-crack anthems. On his signature track, 2006's "Hustlin'," he assumes the history of his namesake and claims that "Noriega owes me about a 100 favors." He's into "distribution, I'm like Atlantic/ I got motherf*ckers flying across the Atlantic." The subsequent debut, Port of Miami, was similarly fantastical and fatalistic, proving that tragedy plus time equals a hit record.

Arguably the most popular rapper out of Florida, Trick Daddy's first album, Based On A True Story, dropped in 1997, but it was his follow-up, www.thug.com, that really opened the doors for him thanks to the runaway hit single "Naan N*gg*." (That song also gave the world its first glimpse of Trick's female protégé Trina). Known for his rambunctious humor, infectious beats, and shining gold grill, he continued to drop albums and make hits, scoring two big crossover smashes with "I'm A Thug" and "Take It To The House" off his Thugs Are Us LP. 2002 saw the release of Trick Daddy's fifth album, Thug Holiday, which featured the radio favorite "In Da Wind."

DJ Khaled is of the generation of DJs whose greatest talent is coordination and promotion. The Miami radio personality was never a big name in the mix-tape circuit, but he did have the good luck of being an important mover and shaker within the burgeoning Miami hip-hop community. He's perhaps the preeminent tastemaker for the scene, and not only commands respect with native rappers and producers but also with the scores of visiting celebrities who flock to the city. Khaled's first official release, 2006's Listennn, featured a who's who of hip-hop and spawned the breakout single "Holla at Me," featuring Rick Rock, Paul Wall and Lil Wayne with production by Cool and Dre. That success, however, was nothing compared to the buzz created by 2007's "We Takin' Over," which was the lead-off single for Khaled's sophomore Koch release, We the Best.

Hailing from New Orleans' infamous Magnolia housing projects, Juvenile released his first album in 1995; he teamed up with Cash Money honchos Slim and Baby a few years later to drop Solja Rags. Despite being practically unknown on either coast, Juvie had a serious reputation and developed a huge following across the South and Midwest. By the time his fourth record 400 Degreez dropped in 1998, the charismatic emcee was ready for the big time. "Ha" was his first single to blow up on a national level, featuring the otherworldly electro-crunk production of Mannie Fresh backing his unusual, heavily accented flows. "Back That Azz Up" soon followed, an infectious, booty-shaking anthem that kept the radio and video shows on lock for months. The album went triple-platinum, landed Cash Money an unprecedented $30 million distribution deal, and made Juvie and his Hot Boy$ crew international superstars. Although some scoff at their gold-plated grills, customized helicopters, and proudly violent and sexist lyrics, their perseverance and DIY work ethic made the Hot Boy$ the biggest success story of 1999.

Birdman's resume is impeccable: CEO and founder of Cash Money Records, one of the South's most influential and successful labels; rapper with at least 10 solo and collaborative discs to his name, many of which went platinum; and "daddy" to one of hip-hop's most storied emcees, Lil Wayne. Born and raised in New Orleans' infamous Uptown area, Bryan "Baby" Williams began his career in hip-hop when he and his brother, Ronald Williams, formed Cash Money Records. The label wed hardcore gangster lyrics from local upstarts U.N.L.V., Pimp Daddy and B.G. to the punchy electro funk of Mannie Fresh's productions, a style that borrowed liberally from late-1990s NoLa bounce. Birdman made his debut on the microphone in 1998 as a member of the Big Tymers, which also included Mannie Fresh. Though he's not a great emcee by any measure, he is able to project a lethal mixture of menace and success, and Fresh's beats helped make the Tymers one of the more successful groups in the South during the late '90s and early half of this decade. Birdman's three solo albums, including 2007's hit 5 * Stunna, as well as his mentorship of Wayne, have helped the rap vet stay in the spotlight.

David Banner got his start as half of the rap duo Crooked Lettaz, releasing his first solo album (Them Firewater Boyz, Vol. 1) at the dawn of the new millennium. The album was heralded for its airtight production and Banner's easy-flowing raps. In 2003, Banner released Mississippi: The Album to generally positive reviews. The next year saw him drop MTA2: Baptized in Dirty Water, and in 2005 he returned with his third solo piece, Certified, bolstered by the gigantic single "Play." Now a full-fledged rap superstar, David Banner is also a notable activist; he organized "Heal the Hood," a benefit concert in Atlanta to raise money for those affected by the devastating Hurricane Katrina.
An exotic dancer turned emcee/sex symbol, Miami's Trina first debuted on Trick Daddy's hit 1999 single "Naan N*gg*." Her solo album Da Baddest Bitch appeared the following year, flaunting raw rhymes in the same vein as Lil' Kim and Foxy Brown, but with a solid dose of Southern bump. More singles like "Pull Over" and "Take It To The House" solidified her growing rep, and paved the way for her second LP Diamond Princess. After a few years of cameos and guest spots, she returned in 2005 with The Glamorest Life. From humble beginnings, she's since become one of the most high-profile female rappers in the game.

Shreveport, Louisiana native Hurricane Chris was not yet 20 when the ridiculously catchy "A Bay Bay" hit nationally in the summer of 2007. The song was big, simple and catchy, concerned with nothing more than its own greatness, and thinking only about the next sip of Patron and the next shaking ass. In short, it's a great summer anthem. Whether or not Chris will be able to parlay the song's success into a career remains to be seen, but for one summer the small town boy was on top of the world.

Hailing from New Orleans, Mystikal flexes a rowdy, dizzyingly fast rhyme style that's become increasingly popular in the Dirty South and midwest. He dropped his first album in 1995 and soon after hooked up with No Limit, with whom he has rolled ever since. Backed by in-house production from Beats By the Pound, he's released a steady stream of material, both solo and in collaboration. Mystikal has rocked mics with a wide range of other artists, including Snoop, Mariah Carey, and Outkast.

The duo of super-producer Mannie Fresh and Cash Money co-founder Bryon "Baby" Williams, the Big Tymers first appeared on wax doing the intro for B.G.'s It's All On U Vol. 2 in 1997. Since then the two have been behind the scenes of some of the hottest careers in Southern hip hop, namely Juvenile, B.G., and the Hot Boy$. In '98 they released their debut album How U Luv That, and returned in 2G with I Got That Work. Like their Cash Money brethren, most of their songs revolve around staying iced-out and living lavish, as evidenced by their single "Get Your Roll On."

As the first artist signed to Cash Money Records, B.G. (short for Baby Gangsta) has seven solo albums to his credit, in addition to his work with the Hot Boys and numerous appearances on other Cash Money projects. His first record, 1993's True Story was recorded when he was just 11 years old. Raised in hectic uptown New Orleans, B.G.'s vivid street tales struck a chord in the Dirty South underground and made him into a local celebrity. B.G.'s super-smooth, syrupy rhyme style is distinctly his own, and his personal struggles with drug addiction lend a legitimacy to his no-nonsense ghetto lyrics. It was also B.G. who introduced "Bling Bling" into everyday hip-hop vernacular with his multi-platinum single of the same name. In 2000, he released Checkmate and appeared on "Y.B.E.," the second single from Prodigy's solo album H.N.I.C..

Also known as Luther Campbell, this porn-rap pioneer is arguably the most famous figure in the Miami Booty Bass scene. Luke started 2 Live Crew in the mid-1980's, crafting X-rated party jams by fusing booming bass bumps, speedy 808 beats, call-and-response chanted choruses, and humorously lewd lyrics. In 1989 the group found themselves under fire by watchdog groups, record stores, and the supreme court, after being accused of distributing obscene material, i.e. their album As Nasty As They Wanna Be. The Crew eventually prevailed, and continued dropping albums throughout the nineties. Luke has also released many solo albums, runs his own label, produces erotic pay-per-view, and promotes new artists.

Like his Dirty South brethren Tag Team and 69 Boyz, Freak Nasty has released several albums, though he's best-remembered for a surprise crossover hit. Propelled by ludacrisly low-end bass and a chant-along chorus, "Da Dip" tore up the charts in '96/'97. He remains in the business, collaborating with 2 Live Crew, appearing on soundtracks, and recording new material. He has yet to revisit the same kind of massive success, though he did score another hit with "Down Low." "Da Dip" can be found on his second LP Controversee...That's Life...And That's The Way It Is, as well as on many Booty Bass and Jock Jams-style compilations.

The musical maestro behind Cash Money Records' tremendous success, Mannie Fresh is revered for his signature production style that has made superstars out of Juvenile and Baby the Birdman among others. One of New Orleans' original hip-hop DJs, Fresh has been living up to his name since the mid-'80s, when he was spinning at parties and clubs around the Big Easy. Hooking up with Cash Money, he soon became the in-house producer for every artist on the label, focusing on teenage rapper B.G., alligator-wrestler-turned-emcee Juvenile and the Hot Boys supergroup, plus comprising one-half of the Big Tymers. In the late-'90s, Mannie's syncopated, bottom-heavy beats had spread from the Dirty South to the mainstream on the strength of better distribution through Universal and a string of infectious, chart-topping hits such as "Ha," "Back That Azz Up," "Bling Bling," "We On Fire" and "Project Chick." Though several of Cash Money's marquee acts have since left the label, Mannie remains, continuing to craft hits for the team. In late 2004, he released his highly anticipated solo debut The Mind Of Mannie Fresh.

In the course of a year, New Orleans' rapper Big Boy Da Prince went from living in a FEMA trailer in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina to being one of pop rap's hottest new superstars. His breakthrough hit, "This Is the Way I Live," is a slow-cooked look at the life on the streets. The song eschews the normal nihilism associated with the subject and instead paints a more modest and objective portrait of the various trials and tribulations of one "young little dude." The track is hopeful, modest and appealing. Big Boy got his start at the age of 16 while touring with New Orleans' rappers Turk and Chopper. Though it would be a half-decade before he would join their ranks as a rap superstar, the experience taught him the ins and outs of the rap industry.

This Florida emcee pulls no punches when it comes to unabashed ass-praising and floor-shaking bass bumps. But that's really no surprise, given that Laz (born Lazaro Mendez) is an influential DJ who's been promoting Miami Bass and Latin music since the late 1980s. Now something of an institution at Miami's Hot 96, Laz pioneered the fusion of Latin beats and rap in the '90s, and he's widely credited with helping to create Latin Bass, an offshoot of his hometown's famous export. Despite his constant work breaking new acts, DJ Laz takes time out every few years to drop his own releases, often featuring guest turns by some of the Dirty South's hottest emcees.

After a promising start as a key No Limit soldier and member of TRU, Master P's younger brother C-Murder went from Dirty South rap star to convicted killer serving a life sentence. He released six solo albums between 1998 and 2005, and built up a devoted fanbase (especially in his native New Orleans), thanks to his smooth drawling flow and crime-addled wordplay. His final album The Truest Sh*t I Ever Said was released in the spring of 2005, while his family and legal team continued to appeal his conviction.

A female emcee from Tampa, Florida, Khia came out of nowhere in the summer of 2002, rocketing up the charts with her oral sex anthem "My Neck, My Back." The quintessential nasty-girl/strip club single of the year, its XXX-rated rhymes, bumping bass, and minimalist beats lit up radios from coast to coast, and prompted swift sales of her debut album Thug Misses. Whether she has the skills to maintain a long career, a la Foxy Brown or Lil Kim, remains to be seen, but her explosive debut cannot be denied.

After several years as the pre-eminent source for Dirty South Gangsta Rap, by 2000, No Limit's stranglehold on the charts faced some stiff competition from crosstown rivals Cash Money Records. Hoping to strike while the iron was still hot, mogul/maestro Master P unleashed the 504 Boyz LP, a compilation-style effort featuring a gang of artists repping for the Tank. Showcasing in-house favorites Mystikal, Silkk, and C-Murder and second-string players Krazy, X-Con, and Merecedes, the Goodfellas album did little to convince the skeptics that No Limit was fading fast. They scored a short-lived hit with "Wobble Wobble" and diehard P fanatics were satisfied, but that was about it. Shortly after its release, both Snoop Dogg and Mystikal left the label to find success elsewhere. Ironically, Cash Money's reign on the charts was also short-lived. Both companies, though still active today, are shells of their former selves.

Although they were already very successful in the South and Midwest, 1999 was the year the Hot Boys took over the world. Hailing from New Orleans, the four-man powerhouse of B.G., Juvenile, Lil' Wayne, and Turk lit the charts on fire with a slew of Dirty South hits. Led by the infectiously freaky electro-crunk production of Mannie Fresh, the young emcees built an enormous following with their heavily accented flows and graphic depictions of life in Chopper City. With each member flexing a distinct rhyme style, the Hot Boys are constantly bringing the bangers on solo albums and group projects alike. From the ice-rocking anthem "Bling Bling" to the chart-owning "Back That Azz Up" to the lady-loving "I Need A Hot Girl," the Cash Money crew certainly knows how to make hits. Unfortunately, the Hot Boys wouldn't last as a group, with all the members except Lil' Wayne bouncing from the label due to beef over money. Juvenile eventually returned to release Juve The Great, then left again. BG is struggling with heroin addiction and trying to start his own label, while Turk was arrested in early 2004 for allegedly shooting two cops during a drug raid in Memphis.

Following the lead of Dirty South nympho-rappers like Khia and Trina, Miami's Jacki-O hits the scene with "Pussy" (aka "Nookie"), an unabashed ode to the power of her vagina. While she won't be winning any awards for lyrical originality, the coochie-pride jam could easily become a fluke hit or strip club standard (see: Khia's "My Neck, My Back"). Jacki-O's debut LP, Poe Little Rich Girl, features bouncy production from Timbaland and Jazzy Pha, as well as other XXX-themed selections like "Somebody's Getting F*cked" and "Sugar Walls."

An emcee, producer, and DJ, Magic Mike has been at the forefront of the Florida hip-hop scene for more than a decade. With more than twenty albums under his belt, he's proven time and again that he is indeed the king of bass. His 1989 LP debut went platinum, and its follow-up became the first instrumental album to be certified as gold. Despite prolific releases and huge regional success throughout the '90s, Magic Mike is still somewhat slept on, considering his major influence and never-ending output. Vibe magazine once called him the "best platinum artist you never heard." On Magic's Kingdom (2000), he continues to bring the party-rocking jams, enlisting ex-Shalimar vocalist Howard Hewett on the bouncy lead single "Groove On."

One of the biggest groups to emerge from the Miami scene, the Poison Clan released four albums between 1990 and 1995, helping to popularize hardcore Southern party rap. With ridiculously misogynist lyrics, rowdy call-and-response choruses, and a hearty amount of bass, they scored several hits, most notably 1992's "Shake Watcha' Mama Gave Ya'." Some of the Clansmen have embarked on new projects, namely Ruff Town Mob and Home Team. J.T. Money dropped his solo debut Pimpin' On Wax in '99, featuring the hit single "Who Dat."

Card-carrying members of the Miami Booty Bass circuit, 95 South received worldwide attention for their 1993 single "Whoot, There It Is." Their simplistic, call-and-response rhyme style forgoes make-believe Mafioso and Alize-sipping thugs, instead embracing the magical mayhem of wild sex. Production is all about the bass, with booming low-end laying the foundation for bright keyboards and speedy 808 beats. Those searching for deep lyrics and musical diversity should look elsewhere -- 95 South are strictly for the freaks.

A thugged-out rapper from New Orleans, Turk is the most low profile member of the Hot Boys, rhyming alongside Juvenile, B.G. and Lil' Wayne. Like his blinged-out brethren, Turk raps about doing dirt, bagging freaks, assassinating haters and Southern pride. Unfortunately for him, the once-untouchable Cash Money Records family began to splinter right around the time his long-awaited solo debut, Young & Thuggin', dropped. Despite beats from resident maestro Mannie Fresh, and cameos aplenty from his more established cohorts, the album failed to make much of a splash, especially compared to the crew's earlier, multi-platinum mega-hits. In 2003, after most of the Hot Boys left Cash Money due to shady accounting practices, Turk hooked up with a different label and returned with album number two, Raw & Uncut, which pretty much sailed under the radar of all but the most fervent fans. After seeing their own Mannie Fresh-less solo offerings go virtually unnoticed, Turk, B.G. and Juvenile went back to Cash Money Records (which was riding high thanks to the success of the Big Tymers), with hopes of re-establishing their faded reputations and invigorating slumping sales.
