LMFAO's M.O. is encoded in the Los Angeles duo's very name, and its music is made to match: loud, brash and cheerfully irreverent. Dirty South-derived hip-hop forms the core of their sound, with its booming 808 bass drums and ravey synth stabs, but if these guys are O.G., it's more like Original Goofball, gleefully tweaking convention with a cartoonish fusion of crunk and nu-electro. Members Sky Blu and Redfoo (Sky's uncle) got their start DJing a mixture of commercial hip-hop and club music, and soon were producing their own beats to play out. After soaking up the sun at the South Beach dance-music festival Winter Music Conference, they returned to L.A. and banged out "I'm in Miami Bitch," a tongue-in-cheek ode to the good life that racked up 19 million MySpace plays (and counting). In 2009, Interscope released their debut album, the self-explanatory Party Rock.

Call him a middle class suburbanite with an axe to grind. Call him a hip-hop frat boy. Heck, even call him a poseur. Just don't call Asher Roth the next Eminem. Because this white boy bristles at the comparison to hip-hop's reigning white knight. To be fair, Roth does differ from Em in everything from background to approach. Born in a suburb of Philadelphia, Roth started rhyme battling his buddies for fun in high school. While enrolled in an elementary education program at West Chester University, the enterprising amateur emcee created a MySpace artist page and built up a fanbase of "friends" that soon included Atlanta promoter Scooter Braun. With Braun as his manager, Roth put out the DJ Drama-helmed mixtape The Greenhouse Effect, got signed to SRC/Universal and generated some buzz with the dorm rat-baiting "I Love College," the first single from his 2009 debut Asleep in the Bread Aisle.

Pennsylvania quintet combine the adolescent humor of early Beasties with the Funk Rock tone of mid-1990s Rapcore. Crunchy guitars and furious drums back Jimmy Pop Ali's shout-raps about weed, beer and assorted sexploits. Their proudly obnoxious style won them major airplay for a minute, though once Kid Rock and Eminem blew up, all but the most loyal fans pretty much forgot about the Bloodhound Gang. They released their third LP Hooray For Boobies in 2000, and returned five years later with Hefty Fine, but failed to match the commercial impact of their earlier work.

Shwayze is the result of equal amounts of derring-do and stoner chill. The derring-do bit comes from the emcee third of this California trio, Shwayze himself, a kid born Aaron Smith and raised in the trailer parks of Malibu. One night in 2005, Smith jumped the stage at the Malibu Inn, started freestyling and basically took over the opening band's set. His pluck and skills were not missed by main act Whitestarr, the roots-rock outfit headed up by Cisco Adler, professional man about Malibu and scion of record producer Lou Adler. Adler and Smith started hanging out and, after Smith dogged him for a while, Adler finally brought him into his home studio. The two would party all night and then spend their days in the studio, with Adler laying down beats, buzzy vocals and rootsy acoustic guitar riffs and Smith (newly christened Shwayze) providing laid-back rhymes about girls, parties and summer. The duo later expanded to a trio with the addition of DJ Skeet Skeet and signed to Geffen, which released their first album in August 2008.

A trailblazing duo from Philadelphia, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince had a slew of classic and hugely successful hits in the late 1980s and early '90s. The tracks "Parents (Just Don't Understand)," "Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble," and "Summertime" kept the pair in steady rotation on radio and MTV. Their lyrics were the antithesis of the developing Gangsta Rap of the era, profanity-free and mostly concerned with partying and goofin' off. In total, they released five albums between 1987 and 1993, as well as a greatest hits package in '98. Will Smith went on to dominate TV, movies, and the charts with his thriving solo career, while Jeff continues to record and produce; he released his first solo album, The Magnificent on BBE in 2002.

Old School hero, Juice Crew member and Comedy Rap pioneer, "The Diabolical" Biz Markie is hip-hop's original class clown and all-around nut. His conversational flows, random moaning, exceptional beatboxing and comical subject matter have delighted listeners since 1986. With classic jams like "Make The Music With Your Mouth Biz," "Pickin' Boogers" and " Vapors," Biz established himself as a true emcee with a very original style. While other rappers focused on self-promotion and bravado, Biz came with the humor, dropping casually hilarious verses over Marley Marl's consistently funky beats. Although he hasn't released an LP in quite some time, Biz is still in action, working with artists like the Beastie Boys and lending his charismatic magic when needed. His timeless hits still rock a party with ease, and no self-respecting hip-hop fan can front on the man's legacy. As he put it himself in 1987, "Nobody Beats The Biz."

Weird Al Yankovic had better watch out. There's a new sheriff of parody and
gut-busting geek-wit in town, and his name is MC Lars. Well, actually, his
name is Andrew Nielsen and he was born in Berkeley, California. His home
state plays an important role in Lars' music, which might be best described
as serious hip-hop that doesn't take itself (or anything else) seriously. So
far the targets of Lars' smugly silly satire have included LA emo ("Signing
Emo"), suburban rap queens ("every Biggie needs a Kim," sayeth Lars), and
Bay Area hip-hop and its poseur devotees. Equally influential, however, is
punk, in which Lars has an extensive background. He played in the
punk(-cum-progressive metal) band Amphoteric in high school before returning
to hip-hop in college, and he often performs his hip-hop solo act with a
full punk band backing him. In general, Lars's music is based on a kind of
DIY drollness that simultaneously borrows from, parodies, and celebrates
various bits and pieces of pop culture.

Comprising Prince Markie Dee, the Human Beatbox, and Kool Rock-Ski, the Fat Boys released their first single "Reality" in the fall of 1983. Originally known as the Disco 3, they changed their name the following year with the release of their second single "Fat Boys." The song was a hit and led to a spot on the legendary Fresh Fest tours alongside LL, Whodini, and Run-D.M.C. Their comical rhymes and fun-loving demeanor made them major stars in the '80s, and led to many successful albums. They appeared in two films, Krushgroove and Disorderlies, and had a big crossover hit in '87 with "Wipeout," a collaboration with the Beach Boys from their platinum-selling LP Crushin'. The Fat Boys disbanded in the early '90s, and in '95 the Human Beatbox (Darren Robinson) suffered a fatal heart attack. Highly influential and often overlooked, the Fat Boys played a major role in introducing hip-hop to mainstream America. Rhino Records released The Best Of The Fat Boys: All Meat, No Filler! in '97.

Although remembered mostly for Kid's looming high-top fade and their comical films (House Party, House Party 2, Class Act), Kid 'N Play first hit the scene with their platinum-selling 1988 debut 2 Hype. Flexing a catchy, happy-go-lucky Pop Rap sound, the duo caught on quickly with a young audience, as well as with adults who abhorred the Gangsta movement just coming into play at the time. In 1990, they released a pair of albums: the soundtrack to House Party, and Kid 'N Play's Fun House. Around the same time, they launched a Saturday morning cartoon show based on themselves. Face The Nation (1991) was their final album, and the two were quiet for much of the 1990s.

While NBA superstars trying their luck at the rap game is not too unusual (see: Allen Iverson, Dana Barros, Chris Webber, etc.), none have been as successful or as committed to the cause as Shaq. The league's most dominant center has released a staggering total of six (!) albums since 1993, including a greatest hits collection and a cameo-packed compilation. Lyrically, he's no Rakim or Aceyalone, but Shaq's mic skills have steadilly improved over the years, and he's arguably the most competent athlete-rapper on the scene. Even if his records don't move major numbers, Shaq really doesn't care. He makes enough paper from his real job to live large forever; he makes music just for fun. Another bonus of being a world-famous baller is that he can get just about any artist he wants to produce or bust rhymes alongside him. Shaq's 2002 Superfriends compilation features a who's-who of hip-hop V.I.P.s, including Snoop and Nate Dogg, Mos Def, Common, Ludacris, and George Clinton.

Barman-esque goofiness from talented if bizarre crew. Deliberately freaked-out rhymes and casually zany delivery tops excellent production jam-packed with obscure, uppity samples and simple beats. Subject matter ranges from changing vocal cords to Doritos to bar mitzvahs. Slightly gimmicky but still very entertaining, with tight rhymes and extremely solid track construction. "Wizard Of Your Mother" is especially fresh, a crazy, sample-packed epic remixing the classic film.

Effortlessly blending catchy, danceable production with overtly sexist rhymes, AMG is best known for his '91 debut Bitch Betta Have My Money. A formula similar to Too Short's or Tha Dogg Pound's, even his most over-the-top lyrical boasts come off more humorous than hateful.
Comprised of Paris The Black Fu and Andy Toth, this Detroit pair have hit it big in the U.K. because of the novelty song "Sandwiches." The boys' sound is rooted in pure Detroit Techno, with pumping, pure Electro beats steeped in funkiness and Paris' humorous vocals run through a vocoder, giving them a sped-up, cartoonish sound. Essentially, the song is incredibly simple and straightforward about its overriding theme: sex (hence, a big reason for its popularity). While the song isn't necessarily groundbreaking, and while they've yet to produce anything other than this single, ''Sandwiches'' is one of those songs that will stay in your head long after you've grown tired of it.

A Brooklyn duo best known for their minimalist classic "Top Billin'," Milk and Gizmo released their first album What More Can I Say? in 1988. Brothers of pioneering female rapper MC Lyte, they excelled at comical bragging rhymes, which they ran over banging beats and choice samples.
A skilled producer, DJ, and emcee, New York's J-Zone has been making major noise in the hip-hop underground for the past few years. His first album, Music For Tu Madre (1999), was recorded as a school project and independently released to critical praise. In 2000 he returned with A Bottle Of Whup Ass, which furthered his rep as a super-fresh jack of all trades. J-Zone is all about putting the humor back in hip-hop, musing about Lucy Liu and getting dissed by the ladies while lacing obscure samples with sick scratches and zany beats. He also appeared on the Runaways U.K. Progress album, and has also produced singles for his compadres Huggy Bear and Al-Shid.

The hypest hype man around, Flav picks up the mic to drop his debut solo album. Hip-Hop's original clown prince (before the media replaced him with ODB,) serves up his signature high-energy sound to a new generation of listeners. Still rockin' the shades and the clock, he lays down frenetic, high-pitched verses over heavy beats and layered noise reminiscent of vintage PE. His lyrics may not be the deepest (or clearest,) but for those who appreciate his crazy antics and unique approach, this is definitely worth checking out.

A three-man supergroup comprising subterranean beat maestro Kut Masta Kurt, hip-hop's most prolific schizophrenic Kool Keith, and East Bay mic murderer Motion Man, the Masters Of Illusion are ready to conquer the world. Kurt's tracks are better than ever, with pounding drums, excellent samples, and slick cuts throughout. Keith's rhymes are nicer than on either one of his other 2000 releases, Matthew and the Analog Bros.' Pimp To Eat, with fierce delivery and the usual assortment of bugged-out prose. But possibly the most impressive element is Motion Man, who steps out from the shadows with some of the tightest rhymes heard all year. Although its release was somewhat under-hyped, their debut LP is no doubt one of the best albums of 2000.

Not to be confused with Gloria Estefan's similarly named backup band, Miami Bass Machine craft upbeat party rap with an emphasis on the low-end. Old School beats and goofy sound bites merge with straightforward rapping and occasional guitars. Rhymes focus less on booty and more on good times, with titles like "Calling Out For Pizza" and "Let's Have Some Fun."

An unconventional Brooklyn emcee who was one half of Old-School heroes Audio Two, Milk's place in history is secure on the strength of the 1988 classic "Top Billin'." After three records with his brother Gizmo, Milk went solo in the mid-1990s, dropping a couple of singles and an EP for Rick Rubin's American Records. His crazy nasal rhyme style coupled with comical lyrics and playful beats created an upbeat, off-kilter sound that was all his own. In addition to his unusual written works, Milk has also been known to come up with some wildly funky freestyles in which his lyrics purposefully never rhyme. He has been on the DL for a few years, but he continues to produce for other artists and his influence can be heard in a wide variety of new school emcees.

A charismatic emcee from the Bay Area, Z-Man is best known for his unusual flow, extensive slang dictionary, and comical, party-centric tales. He got his start as a member of 99th Dimension, but also put in time with local underground favorites like Sacred Hoop and Gingerbread Man. After building up a sizeable rep releasing numerous cassette-only albums and performing around Northern Cali, Z-Man signed with Hieroglyphics' label to put out his most high profile LP to date, 2004's Dope or Dogfood.

Bitch, a lesbian diva from Detroit, and Animal, a trans-man from Queens, met in the late 1990s while they were coincidentally both attending a play rehearsal at a theater school in Chicago and, according to their label Righteous Babe Records, tripping on mushrooms. Before the 'shrooms had left their systems, they'd already begun laying the groundwork for the funny, funked-up folkie sound they would forge out of little more than a drum, an electric violin, and a handful of dildo jokes. Vowing never to reveal their given names, Bitch and Animal quickly hit the coffee shop circuit, leaving a trail of feminist urine in their wake as they induced pee-your-pants laughter in the girl-with-a-guitar crowd with songs like "Sparkly Queen Areola," "Best Cock on the Block" and "Ganja." Needless to say, Ani DiFranco sent her minions to snap up the duo tout de suite, and they released their second and third albums on her label before taking an indefinite hiatus to pursue other projects.
Bitch went on to form Bitch and the Exciting Conclusion with her girlfriend Daniela Sea, while Animal began performing solo as Animal Prufrock. No, they still haven't told the world what their real names are.
