The Gorillaz' image may be cartoonish, but with artists like Del the Funky Homosapian, Dan the Automator, and members of Blur, Cibo Matto, and Tom Tom Club contributing, their music is anything but lightweight. Experimental in nature and obtuse in scope, the Gorillaz' sound melds Damon Albarn's sharp pop sensibilities with Dan the Automator's eclectic bass-heavy, beat-driven hip hop. And although the combination doesn't always gel, when they hit the mark, it's usually with a bull's eye. Perhaps it was the cartoon facade, or the side-project feel of the collaborative, but when the Gorillaz's self-titled debut was released in 2001, critics predicted a short shelf life for the band. Despite this, the Gorillaz's album went platinum and the group scored a couple of hefty hits with "Clint Eastwood" and "19-2000." But when most of the members of the group went back to their day jobs, most assumed that was the end of them. But in July 2005, the band released its follow-up, Demon Days. As the title suggests, the Gorillaz's sophomore effort casts a darker shadow; however, this is tempered by slick-sounding beats and a variety of happy-go-lucky blips and bleeps. The group scored a radio hit this second time around with the single "Feel Good, Inc."

Marketing gimmicks aside, pinning down the raw facts on Gnarls Barkley is easy. The group's origins can be traced to an afternoon in 2005 when producer Danger Mouse played a few tracks for soul singer/rapper Cee-Lo. The former Goodie Mob member was impressed with the producer's tracks and suggested that the Athens, Ga. native submit tracks for Cee-Lo's new album. Danger Mouse -- whose production credits include Gorillaz and last year's Danger Doom -- replied matter-of-factly that he doesn't make tracks, he makes albums. The rest, as they say, is history.

While it's a clear enough story, the music that Gnarls Barkley makes is more prickly and diverges from anything that Cee-Lo or Danger Mouse have created in their previous endeavors. And though it references nearly everything, it has no real precedent. Is it amoral gospel music, cinematic soul steeped in idiosyncratic underground hip-hop or left-field indie rock with a drum machine and a basketball fixation? Their debut, 2006's St. Elsewhere , is goofy and slippery, falling in the conceptual lineage of other imaginary hip-hop groups such as the aforementioned Gorillaz or Dr. Octagon. It's smooth and soulful, mimicking some the stylistic expeditions taken by Outkast on The Love Below . And finally, it's a mess: disorganized and brilliant; ambitious and nostalgic. Enjoy the music and the mystery.

The emcee now simply known as DOOM hasn't shown his face to the public in over a decade, choosing instead to hide behind a metal mask at all times. The subject of constant speculation by a rabid fan base, the man born Daniel Dumile is among hip-hop's most mythologized rappers. DOOM's story starts in 1993, when Sev Love X's brother and KMD groupmate Subroc died in a car accident and their sophomore album, Black Bastards, was shelved by their record label. Sev Love went into hiding, emerging years later as the masked "super villain" MF DOOM. His first album, 1999's Operation Doomsday, was a lo-fi hip-hop classic, featuring a cadre of reworked quiet-storm beats and oblique word puzzles. As an emcee, his flow is a blunt instrument, rumbling over a track's rhythm, oftentimes oblivious to the beat. He relies on words to draw out rhythm, cramming lines with inner rhymes and alliteration. The album acquired a cult following, and when DOOM returned in 2003, the world was ready. He released classics Madvillainy, Take Me to Your Leader and Vaudeville Villain under different aliases within a 10-month period in 2003 and 2004. His latest is 2009's Born Like This.

With their unlikely fusion of pop, R&B, psychedelia, and hip-hop, Jersey City's P.M. Dawn won the praise of critics and listeners alike with their 1991 debut, Of the Heart, Of the Soul, and Of the Cross. DJ Minutemix's diverse blend of sounds and Prince Be's introspective vocals won them many fans, though some in the hip-hop community dismissed their eclectic image as formulated and soft. In 1992, after reading an interview in which Be challenged KRS-One, the Blastmaster himself physically tossed him off a stage in NYC. Although P.M. Dawn went on to release three more albums, they never revisited their early successes.

Pointing back to a distant era in rap, Cool Kids mix booming 808 drums with simplistic rap patterns, minimalist synth embellishments and references to double dutch, Rakim and Do the Right Thing. Still, kids Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks put enough space in their beats and randomness in their rhymes to make their aesthetic fresh -- think the Beastie Boys filtered through Pharrell and Diplo. The two retro-futurists met up in music's current melting pot, Myspace, and garnered a significant underground buzz when they were featured at the 2007 CMJ Music Conference and selected to open for hip harbinger M.I.A. Later that year, their debut single, "Black Mags," a paean to tricked-out bikes, took the indie world by storm. Its success, as well as the ascension of like-minded acts the Knux, Kid Sister and others, birthed the new micro-genre hipster hop. Their debut EP, The Bake Sale, dropped in the summer of 2008 on Chocolate Industries.

Long a member of Los Angeles' fertile experimental hip-hop scene, Flying Lotus came up alongside the Dublab collective and the Plug Research label before assuming a kind of leadership role, in 2008, with the launch of his Brainfeeder label and the release of his second album, Los Angeles, on the U.K.'s esteemed Warp label. A great nephew of Alice Coltrane, Flying Lotus (Steven Ellison) isn't as jazzy as you might expect, but he definitely inherited his aunt's cosmic leanings. Running warm analog sounds through crackling digital treatments, Flying Lotus plays with psychoacoustic confusion as assuredly as he turns his boom-bap knock-kneed. By 2009, Ellison's Brainfeeder imprint was picking up speed with truly next-level releases from Ras G, the Gaslamp Killer, Dr. Strangeloop, Samiyam and Lorn. As central as he is to the L.A. scene, FlyLo proved an international pivot as he reached out to swap remixes with dubsteppers Martyn and King Midas Sound.

Originally consisting of DJ/Mo 'Wax label head James Lavelle, his childhood mate Tim Goldsworthy, and Japanese producer Kudo, U.N.K.L.E. really caught the attention of the music press when Lavelle teamed up with DJ Shadow to produce 1998's Psyence Fiction. Pouring hip-hop and rock through a sieve of experimentalism and breakbeat, the album featured so many cameos (Richard Ashcroft, Thom Yorke and Badly Drawn Boy, to name a few) that it felt like a compilation -- and a dark and brooding one, at that. In 2003, U.N.K.L.E. re-formed again, this time seeing Lavelle partner with his long-time friend Richard File. Never, Never Land is the name of their first venture together.

A DJ, producer, record store owner, and mixtape legend, Houston's DJ Screw has put out literally hundreds of self-made tapes flaunting his "Screwed" style. Playing popular hits at narcoleptically slow speeds, the compilations were made specifically for syrup sippers, i.e. people who drink codeine-laced cough syrup to get wasted. (See "Sippin' On Some Syrup" by Three 6 Mafia.) He was also an ardent supporter/promoter of local acts, including the Screwed Up Click. Already a star in Houston, Screw's unique style was just starting to blow up nationally after years of dedication and hard work. Tragically, in November of 2000, DJ Screw died from a heart attack at age 30. An autopsy later revealed that he had overdosed on codeine cough syrup.

Playing the role of a sexually deviant medicine man, Kool Keith's Dr. Octagon struck a chord with all types of listeners on the '96 classic Dr. Octagonecologyst. Produced by San Francisco-based beat wizard the Automator, and featuring legendary DJ Q-Bert on the cuts, it quickly became a cult favorite, with the twisted gems "Blue Flowers," "Earth People," and "Bear Witness." Keith eventually killed off Octagon on the intro to his Dr. Dooom project. He continues to release new albums at a dizzying pace. (He put out three LPs in 2000 alone.) Q-Bert went on to release his solo epic Wave Twisters and work on films, while the Automator has stayed busy with eclectic projects like Handsome Boy Modeling School, Deltron 3030, and Gorillaz.

Armed with two wheels of steel, Eric "Kid Koala" San assembles patchwork samples into a flowing aural puzzle, mixing funky beats with jittery scratching. Strange vocal snippets and found sound land in perfect rhythm over seemingly endless streams of mellow Funk and warm grooves, creating a fully soundtracked read-along story for the mentally disturbed beat-head. He's more than just the next set of extremely nimble fingers, which he proved on his wicked demo Scratchcratchratchatch, later re-released as Scratchhappyland. Rather, his addition of live drumming and instrumentation helps further demolish the blurring lines between jazz, Funk, and instrumental hip-hop.

Kool Keith is an educated man, boasting a pair of doctorates -- one in dooomology and another in octagon mathematics. With this immense medical and scientific background at his disposal, Keith has come to operate. Production on Keith's albums is eerily evil; his music is an LSD experience gone horribly wrong. Bizarre, ethereal sound effects and tight, piercing drum loops prepare the listener for a down and dirty lyrical delivery that's been cultivated since Keith first arrived on the rap scene with the Ultramagnetic MCs. Verses contain unique rhyme structures and original metaphors, and range from classic emcee braggadocio to tales of robbery and street sex. No MC on the planet is so grimy and yet so polished -- after years in the rap game, Kool Keith's as unique as ever.

An emcee/singer/musician out of Canada, Buck 65 is the kind of artist who gets a lot of praise from critics and listeners who aren't really fans of traditional hip-hop. Strapped with a weathered, raspy voice that has generated countless Tom Waits comparisons, he's more of a rumpled troubadour than stereotypical rapper, delivering introspective and autobiographical stories not unlike the heady emcees of Anticon and Atmosphere. With a dedicated fanbase primarily made up of indie-rock kids, bewitched females, Europeans and Canadians, he has released a staggering amount of material since 1992, with plenty of concept albums, collaborations and limited edition EPs in the mix. In 2003 he released the Everlast-esque Talkin' Honky Blues, followed by This Right Here Is Buck 65, a compilation album that includes much of his older material

Taylor would be your average suburban white kid from the Bay Area if he wasn't performing at clubs he wasn't even old enough to get into. He's been rapping for over 10 years and just graduated high school. At age 18, Taylor has released six albums including one with his group The Funky Accident and has shared stages with underground hip-hop legends like the Grouch of Living Legends. Taylor has a hybrid style that incorporates everything from Krs-One to Atmosphere to Radiohead. With diverse beats incorporating both sampling and live instrumentation, as well as creative wordplay, impeccable rhythm and the confidence to sing when he needs to, Taylor's sound looks to be the future of independent hip-hop.

What do you get when you cross one of Baltimore's down-and-dirtiest emcees with New York's most versatile graphic designer/DJ/producer? Well, some of the most foul-mouthed, freaky-deaky hip-hop this side of Digital Underground. Born in San Diego, Benny Blanco moved to Boston in the early '90s to attend Berklee College of Music. After graduation, he worked as a graphic designer by day and started accruing a string of high-profile DJ gigs at night. Blanco continued his successful moonlighting in New York, where he moved in 2003, adding a series of eclectic mix tapes to his resume. His partner's story is a bit more complicated. Spank Rock is emcee Naeem Juwan, but it's also the name of the indie-hop-meets-dirty-rap duo he formed with producer XXXChange (Alex Epton). Juwan grew up in Baltimore and started rapping in junior high. After a stint in Philly, he moved back to Baltimore and hooked up with Epton. In 2007, Spank Rock and Benny Blanco joined forces, named themselves Bangers and Cash, mixed up booty-hop traditions from Miami to Detroit, and penned an EP of raunchy tunes guaranteed to get your booty on the dance floor.

An extremely innovative producer with an astounding discography behind him, Prince Paul is the mad genius behind some of hip-hop's most landmark work. His production style on De La Soul's 1989 debut 3 Feet High and Rising drew from a wide variety of musical sources. The album was the first to expand the depth of sampling capabilities, perfectly mingling sounds not usually associated with hip-hop. It was also one of the earlier examples of skits on records, a trend followed by practically every hip-hop artist in the 1990s.In 1994, along with the RZA, Fruitkwan and Poetic, Paul created the Gravediggaz, a conceptual supergroup whose experimental sound was soon dubbed "horrorcore." He closed the '90s by dropping his solo debuts Psychoanalysis: What Is It? and the cinematic A Prince Among Thieves, while also hooking up with the Automator (another superproducer) and a gang of cutting-edge artists for the genre-bending Handsome Boy Modeling School's So How's Your Girl. With work on over forty albums under his belt, Prince Paul has consistently changed the rules of hip-hop, furthering its evolution with his startlingly original vision and sound.

A four man squad out of NYC, the aptly-named Anti Pop Consortium meld streaming intellectual prose with decisively abstract beats and subversive sound effects. Comprising E. Blaize on production with Beans, M. Sayyid, and Priest on the mic, the group formed in '97 at the infamous Nuyorican Theatre. After projects with outer-world labels like Wordsound and Jazz Fudge, they teamed up with 75 Ark in 2000 and released their critically acclaimed debut LP Tragic Epilogue.

A skilled producer, DJ, and emcee, New York's J-Zone has been making major noise in the hip-hop underground for the past few years. His first album, Music For Tu Madre (1999), was recorded as a school project and independently released to critical praise. In 2000 he returned with A Bottle Of Whup Ass, which furthered his rep as a super-fresh jack of all trades. J-Zone is all about putting the humor back in hip-hop, musing about Lucy Liu and getting dissed by the ladies while lacing obscure samples with sick scratches and zany beats. He also appeared on the Runaways U.K. Progress album, and has also produced singles for his compadres Huggy Bear and Al-Shid.

Those who only know Patton as "that guy from Faith No More" (or even via his work in the more experimental bands Mr. Bungle and Fantomas) are in for a surprise upon hearing his solo albums. Adult Themes for Voice (1996) was recorded entirely a cappella using only a four-track and a microphone (no effects), but you'd never guess it given the range of hisses, gurgles, explosions, and Industrial-grade noise blasts on hand. Pranzo Oltranzista (1997) was inspired by the Italian Futurist Cookbook, and alternates sections of eerie suspense with jarring noise outbursts; it supports the Futurist credo that "art, in fact, can be nothing but violence, cruelty, and injustice." Relatively more conventional are his contributions to the Tzadik label's Great Jewish Music tribute series, highlighted by his spastic, over-the-top version of T-Rex's "Chariot Choogle." He actually sings on that one, too.

In 1997, finding an article about Cornelius' first American release Fantasma was easier than clicking on an urban comedy on the WB network. The justifiable amount of press focused on the album's cut-and-paste aesthetic -- the way it jumped from cartoonish samples to dreamy, My Bloody Valentine-style noise to Beach Boys-like harmonizing and down-tempo beats. This led to a veritable tidal wave of remix requests that seemed to find a Cornelius remix on virtually every indie release within a 3000-mile radius. Curiously, his live performances shifted away from these experiments, instead presenting stripped-down garage pop and theremin solos. He has been relatively quiet since, and the world will have to wait to see if Cornelius' lauded studio wizardry was just an illusion.

The hypest hype man around, Flav picks up the mic to drop his debut solo album. Hip-Hop's original clown prince (before the media replaced him with ODB,) serves up his signature high-energy sound to a new generation of listeners. Still rockin' the shades and the clock, he lays down frenetic, high-pitched verses over heavy beats and layered noise reminiscent of vintage PE. His lyrics may not be the deepest (or clearest,) but for those who appreciate his crazy antics and unique approach, this is definitely worth checking out.

A three-man supergroup comprising subterranean beat maestro Kut Masta Kurt, hip-hop's most prolific schizophrenic Kool Keith, and East Bay mic murderer Motion Man, the Masters Of Illusion are ready to conquer the world. Kurt's tracks are better than ever, with pounding drums, excellent samples, and slick cuts throughout. Keith's rhymes are nicer than on either one of his other 2000 releases, Matthew and the Analog Bros.' Pimp To Eat, with fierce delivery and the usual assortment of bugged-out prose. But possibly the most impressive element is Motion Man, who steps out from the shadows with some of the tightest rhymes heard all year. Although its release was somewhat under-hyped, their debut LP is no doubt one of the best albums of 2000.

They are the quintessential scratch collective. They are banned worldwide from entering contests (out of courtesy for the competition). They are globally recognized masters of the turntables. They are oddly named. They are the Invisibl Skratch Piklz. What Coltrane was to the saxophone and Hendrix was to the electric guitar, these San Francisco DJs are to the Technics 1200. They didn't invent the scratch, but they've introduced a level of virtuosity that's redefined the art. With raw speed conquered years ago, the group has turned towards innovation. Using turntables as both percussive and melodic instruments, they compose detailed musical odysseys with nothing but wax. One Pikl will rock stabbing sound bites -- like kick and snare drums -- while the others use crossfaders to reconstruct the genetics of instrumental loops and vocal samples. With the occasional aid of elaborate effect arrays, they bastardize sounds into musical mutations whose origins aren't always clear. No sound, whether man made or organic, escapes their mad science.

Never one to maintain the same persona for longer than an album, underground icon and schizophrenic rhyme rocker Kool Keith joins forces with the OG himself for his newest incarnation, the Analog Brothers. Keith Korgg and Ice Oscillator enlist Mark Moog, Pimp Rex, and Silver Synth to assist them, unleashing a flurry of bugged-out future-flows set to thumping beats and strictly analog keyboards. Their debut album Pimp To Eat was released in the summer of 2000.

A decidedly non-conformist emcee who's been alternately praised and attacked by the hip-hop community, Sole is also the H.N.I.C. at Anticon, a coalition of envelope pushing, genre bending DJs, producers, and lyricists. Originally from Maine, Sole got his start in a group called the Last Poets and moved around before settling in the Bay Area. After a much-publicized beef with El-P, he began building the Anticon empire, recruiting co-conspirators like Dose, Jel, Sixtoo, and DJ Mayonnaise into the fold. Prolific in their output, the camp's unique beatscapes and hyper-original, prose-heavy rhymes found a supportive and dedicated fanbase, and much love from fans and press worldwide. As a solo act, Sole has released various singles and tapes, as well as the full-lengths Bottle Of Humans and Learning To Walk. He is also a member of Deep Puddle Dynamics and So-Called Artists.

Few groups in hip-hop have sparked such intense reactions as Deep Puddle Dynamics, a collective that includes Dose, Sole, Slug, Jel, Moodswing9, Mayo, and Abilities (aka the Anticon and Atmosphere guys). While their debut LP, The Taste of Rain...Why Kneel, is noteworthy in that it helped sparked an explosion of angst-ridden bedroom rappers and tone-deaf beatmakers, and put the term "emo-rap" into the world's vocabulary, it remains debatable whether that's such a good thing. Eschewing all traditional hip-hop structure (and some would say soul), the DPD, and Anticon in general, found themselves unlikely heroes to multitudes of disenfranchised computer-literate youths and aging indie rock journalists. Meanwhile, others find their style to be unlistenable, overindulgent, and pretentious. Despite some vocal haters (including Def Jux honcho El-P), the members of Deep Puddle have flourished, gracing the pages of Spin magazine, touring the globe relentlessly, and delighting an intensely devoted following. This is a group you will either love or hate; there is no middle ground.

Any serious fan of sample-based beats and diligent digging needs to hear Quasimoto. An other-worldly character who looks a bit like Alf, Quasimoto hails from the "lost gates." He released his first album, the heavily sweated The Unseen on Stones Throw Records in 2000. Flexing a bugged-out, tape manipulated, high-pitched rhyme style, Lord Quas sounds off on numerous important topics, namely good weed, shady girls, his love of jazz, and the importance of crate-digging. The album's production, provided by Madlib, is outstanding, flaunting an insane amount of frisky breakbeats, thick Funk, and mellow grooves.
