<outline type="include" text="Toby Mac" description="Toby Mac, one third of the influential DC Talk and the last band member to branch out, has proven to be a solid -- and diverse -- solo force. His music ranges from melodic beats with Latin flair ("Irene"), to hardcore house/hip-hop ("Get this Party Started"), to hilariously brilliant skits ("Triple Skinny," "Tru Dog"). Mac knows engineering like Yo-Yo Ma knows the cello, and his immaculately studio-refined music reflects that passion for production. In just the blink of an album, this mastermind behind DC Talk has established himself as a unique independent performer and producer.

<outline type="include" text="Deitrick Haddon" description="Despite maintaining a relative level of obscurity the first few years of his career, those lucky enough to dig up Deitrick Haddon and pay some attention found remarkable Deitrick-of-all-trades. His debut alone flirts with Latin rhythms, melody-happy hip-hop, stout soul, and contemporary R&B with an urban gospel icing that classifies the roots beneath his eclecticism.

<outline type="include" text="MC Hammer" description="From rags to riches to bankruptcy to life as a preacher, Hammer's life plays like a movie (see: VH1's Too Legit: The MC Hammer Story). His 1990 crossover classic Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em made him an international megastar. Fueled by the high-energy party jam "U Can't Touch This," Hammer took the world by storm with his trademark genie pants and simple raps over the bassline from Rick James' "Superfreak." The single was an enormous hit, and the album became one of the biggest selling rap records in history. Other hits followed, namely "Pray." Hot on its heels, Too Legit To Quit (1991) found similar success. Hammer won Grammys, appeared in commercials and even had a cartoon show; but the fickle public soon grew bored with his positive and poppy style -- Gangsta Rap was on the rise. Three subsequent albums were met with little fanfare. In 1997, he declared bankruptcy and focused his efforts on God and family, two themes heavily addressed on his Gospel/R&B album Family Affair (1998). Despite his lyrical shortcomings, Hammer paved the way for other Crossover Rap superstars. He will always be remembered for his flamboyant style, crazy moves and chart-topping hits.

<outline type="include" text="Pillar" description="Pillar continue being all things to all people with this sufficiently hooky, hardcore plate of rock. The title track, "Crossfire" and "Tragedy" issue a dash of metal-screamo that will keep Pillar on mosher's playlists, while the lulling ballad "Angel in Disguise" could be the last thing that you want to hear on your headphones at night.

<outline type="include" text="KJ-52" description="When MTV's Total Request Live misinterpreted KJ-52's "Dear Slim" as a dis on the great Shady one, they inadvertently blasted open the doors for this burgeoning rap artist. KJ, aka Josh Sorrentino, took the opportunity to introduce himself as one of the best MC's in the biz is a taller-than-usual order for a white kid from the Christian hip-hop scene. He attempted to defuse the confusion with "Dear Slim, Part 2," explaining the root of the rhyme, but, unexpectedly, that release took him further than just continuing a dialogue with his musical mentor. KJ turned heads with his chops. A kid from a broken home in the Tampa, Fla., ghetto, KJ, aka "Jonah Sorrentino," channeled his positive Christian experience into his music and has become an innovator in the craft and cultural history of the genre, venerating the art form.

<outline type="include" text="Grits" description="Underground duo dishes out exceptionally mellow, jazz-laced tracks. Topped with nice piano action, subtle horns and chill beats, Grits' organic basslines ooze funkiness. Their flowing, laid-back delivery is consistently smooth and playful, compelling listeners to relax and enjoy the ride. Very cool.

<outline type="include" text="Tonex" description="A rapper, singer, producer, and religious activist, Tonex (pronounced Toe-Nay) crafts inspirational tracks blending positive rhymes and uplifting vocals, while stressing the importance of Jesus Christ in his life. <outline type="include" text="T-Bone" description="T-Bone is the Papa of West Coast, funkadelic, street-preacher, mega-gospel, "reformed hoodlum" hip-hop. He enthusiastically dumps out his whole toolbox on any album spinning funked-out rhythms, random world beats and brazen lyrics that are clean but unedited the only real way to get the hardcore-thug-meets-Jesus thing done. He's ever reestablishing himself as the fastest MC in the west. If you contest that, just try saying gospelalphamegafunkyboogiediscomusic (his 2002 LP) five times fast. There's plenty to sit back and groove to, but for the most part, his mixes get all up in your grill, if not with the machine gun sequencing, then with the not-afraid-to-say-it subject matter. T-Bone bills himself as The Last Street Preacha (his 2001 LP and probably best to date). But whether it's the street, the studio, the stage or bringing his bible to the set (T-Bone played a prominent role in Paramount's "The Fighting Temptations") he lives his credo." category="Christian Rap/Hip-Hop" url="http://feeds.rhapsody.com/t-bone/data.opml?rws=%2Frap-hip-hop%2Fchristian-rap-hip-hop%2Fartist-chart.opml" />
