The post-twist New York and Long Island club scenes bred the (Young) Rascals, an outfit whose sound grew more sophisticated as time went on but stayed rooted in the blue-eyed soul that was its first reason for being. At first a hard-hitting band reminiscent of the early Animals, the Rascals drew from the same well that fed the then-burgeoning garage rock scene. Their first single, "I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore," began with a fearsome rumble that opened out into a tough but subtle R&B performance. It wasn't a huge national hit, but the next one was. "Good Lovin'," a cover of an Olympics ("Western Movies") tune, became the first of three No. 1s for the group. "Groovin'" came after Top 20 hits with "You Better Run" and "I've Been Lonely Too Long," and spent an entire month at the top. Its softer sound also helped pick up a number of remakes, including one by fellow Atlantic recording star Aretha Franklin. By now, of course, the Rascals were relying on their own material, mostly written by singers Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati. They continued their run of hits with lush records, including "A Girl Like You," "How Can I Be Sure" and "A Beautiful Morning, and dropped the word "Young" from their name at this time. They went on to release the psychedelic-tinged "It's Wonderful" and their biggest 45, the gospel-influenced "People Got to Be Free." After that, singles seemed more of an afterthought; like tracks pulled from increasingly ambitious LPs rather than songs designed for maximum impact on their own. Brigati and guitarist Gene Cornish left in 1971, and the new lineup of Rascals packed it in the following year. Their great records -- featured on a number of excellent CD collections -- still ring out. The Rascals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

The answer to many a Trivial Pursuit question, the Troggs existed on their own as wonderful pop tunesmiths and perhaps Britain's first Punk band. Known for their version of "Wild Thing" (and unwittingly creating the career of Tone Loc and boosting ocarina sales around the globe) the Troggs churned out hot-blooded Garage until the 1970s. Unjustly portrayed as unsophisticated cave men, their popularity finally seems to be growing; they've performed with R.E.M. and even played at Sting's wedding.

Even by today's standards, few bands embodied the unadulterated nihilism of rock 'n' roll like the Stooges. Musically and in performance, the Stooges went where few dared. They stripped their songs of extraneous melodies, instead sticking to rolling-thunder rhythms, which pummeled the listener into drooling submission. Raised in the strong tradition of Michigan Garage Rock, the Stooges continued the beat-derived style of mid-1960s bands and sent a jillion volts of electricity through each note. In the process, they short-circuited the minds of listeners who were otherwise having their brains numbed by bearded arena-rockers. The Stooges's sound evolved remarkably, from the naked journeys through drug-addled minds on their first two LPs to lean, vicious blasts of blitzkrieg-like fury on their final effort, Raw Power. This sound bridged gritty Detroit rock with Punk and acted as an important jumping-off point in the formation of Punk rock.

Some music enthusiasts believe that the Beau Brummels were not only the first electric folk band (predating the Byrds), but that they were possibly the first American response to the British Invasion. By fusing Merseybeat-inspired backbeat rhythms with folkie guitars and vocal harmonies, the Beau Brummels created a sound that was simply Anglophile. Their song melodies often leaned toward melancholic moods that fit perfectly even above the band's more upbeat numbers. In 1968 the Beau Brummels experimented with electric country music with Bradley's Barn, a Nashville-recorded album that predated similar efforts by both Poco and the Eagles. Today the band regroups for an occasional reunion or Alec Paolo party. Their folk still rocks, and their harmonies still ring true to the band's original chemistry.

The coolest thing about the Pretty Things -- aside from the fact that guitarist Dick Taylor was an original member of the Rolling Stones, and that the aging group is still banned from the entire country of Australia -- is that they haven't stopped playing together since 1963. Probably the most underrated British Invasion band of the '60s, the Pretty Things have been cult heroes for nearly four decades, and it's a safe claim that their style of Psychedelic/Garage Rock has always been more innovative and eclectic than many of their more well-known contemporaries. The Pretty Things' live shows span the timeline of their musical journey. From their early, gritty, R&B shuffle-punk on through their lysergically acidic, warped carousel ride SF Sorrow (the first full-length concept album ever recorded), the Pretty Things have experimented with anything and everything. Their 1999 release Rage...Before Beauty is a solid and well-rounded recording that evinces the notion that the 1990s are, in fact, the 1960s turned upside down.

Trout Mask Replica, Captain Beefheart's magnum opus, is either the greatest embodiment of Dada art on this side of the Atlantic, or a gluttonous indulgence (a parody even) of 1960s psychedelic excess. Compounded by his famous distaste for rehearsal and a predilection for syncopated rhythms, Don Van Vliet's bizarre songwriting sensibility makes this album -- as with nearly everything in the Beefheart oeuvre -- insurmountably odd. It's about as "accessible" on a first listen as Mt. Everest in a blizzard (during a Sherpa strike). Despite this difficulty, or perhaps because of it, his recordings possess cachet with critics and have had an incalculable effect on the direction of modern rock. Direct lines of influence can be drawn from Beefheart to eccentrics such as Tom Waits and Pere Ubu's David Thomas, while many musicians, whose work seems to have little in common with Van Vliet's, nonetheless cite him as a profound inspiration.

In the 1960s, Vanilla Fudge took pop songs that were in rotation on the radio, slowed down the tempo and added elements of both psychedelia and what would
later be termed heavy metal. The best example of this is their
floating, ultra heavy take on the Supremes' song "You Keep Me Hangin' On."
Play that one real loud and try not to put on a dramatic arm-waving lip-synch
show. It's impossible. The band was formed on Long Island in 1965 but
disbanded in 1970, after constant touring with the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin and several hit singles under their belt. Bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice played with Jeff Beck for a time, releasing the mega-selling Beck, Bogert and Appice record in 1973. The pair then went on to form the hard-boogeying Cactus.

Long considered a seminal band of the psychedelic era, 13th Floor Elevators, led by nutjob visionary Roky Erickson, are one of the very few groups able to rival the Velvet Underground in terms of influence, specifically the far-ranging breadth and longevity of that influence. Seemingly everyone from the Stooges to ZZ Top to Television to garage-rock depressives Cheater Slicks to modern acts like Sunburned Hand of the Man were inspired by the Elevators' first album, The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators, released in 1967. Subverting surf-guitar riffs with a no dollar recording, an avalanche of reverb, Erickson's acid-charred lyrics and a fluttering "electric jug" sound that pervades the album, Psychedelic Sounds remains a landmark of garage rock, psychedelia and punk-rock aesthetics. A trio of albums followed, but subsequent legal problems and constant police harassment finally submarined the band by 1969, when Erickson entered a psychiatric hospital to avoid a prison term for drug charges. Following his release, Erickson went on to a long and convoluted solo career.

The Sir Douglas Quintet was just one of the many incarnations of the late great Doug Sahm, who died unexpectedly in early 2000, a genre-defying, musical badass who was equally at home with country, Psychedelic Rock, R&B, all manner of Tex-Mex, and just about any other category of music you might want to throw at him. He began his career as a child prodigy singer/steel guitar player in the bars and clubs of his native San Antonio, Tex., before he reached his teens. He even sat in with Hank Williams shortly before the country legend kicked the bucket. Sahm formed the Sir Douglas Quintet in the mid-1960s and hit the charts twice with the classic pumping Farfisa sounds of "She's About A Mover" and "Mendocino." After the quintet split, Sahm continued to record prolifically, and actually reformed the group numerous times before his death. A formidable blues guitarist and stunningly soulful singer, Sahm's music was inextricably linked to Texas. In the '90s Sahm hooked up with Freddy Fender, Flaco Jiminez, and his old buddy Augie Meyers to form the Texas Tornados, a sort of border rock supergroup that enjoyed quite a bit of success. He will be missed.

Along with Iggy and the Stooges, the hyper rock 'n' roll freak-beat of Detroit's Motor City Five helped inspire the English Punk rock movement of the late 1970s. Their empathy with the Black Panther political party found them forming the White Panthers with the help of revolutionary John Sinclair, who got them signed to Elektra. The amazing thing about the music of the MC5 is that it's saturated in soul. Even though their fans associate them with the roots of Punk, the band grew up listening to the rich cornucopia of soul music coming out of Motown radio, and it found a way into their songs. Just listen to the doo-wop harmonies on "Kick Out the Jams" and "Teenage Lust" or their cover of Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" and you'll understand that this strange juxtaposition of Punk and soul actually makes a lot of musical sense. Although they never achieved much commercial success, the MC5's cult following continues to grow like untamed afros in the wind.

America's finest original underground band, the Flamin' Groovies had the awful luck of being rock 'n' roll adherents in an age of hippie ideology. While other bands were either broken up or strung out in France, the Flamin' Groovies stayed on the path, releasing powerful, influential rock 'n' roll records. When Epic Records went out on a limb to release Supersnazz in '68, they took a huge risk that never ended up paying off, and so the eternally out of step Groovies were left to fend for themselves throughout the '70s. They ended up making ferocious, anomalous music for an audience that had existed ten years previous and wouldn't exist again until nearly ten years later. Ardent fans pit the early '70s Roy Loney-fronted version of the band against the late '70s Chris Wilson-fronted version; and even more fans pit those versions against the incarnations devised by founding member Cyril Jordan that continue to this day. Take a listen to the furious energy of Teenage Head or the jangling folk-rock of Shake Some Action, and you won't really care what anyone says.

"Surfin' Bird" is the lone hit for this mid-1960s beat combo. The song is a crude, off-the-cuff pastiche of the songs "The Bird's the Word" and "Papa Ooh Mow Mow" by California Doo-Wop group the Rivingtons. The Trashmen boil everything down to the most basic elements, pounding drums and crazy yelping vocals, with guitar and bass nothing more than rhythmic afterthoughts. The song is somewhat of an anthem for garage and '60s punk bands.

Cited as forerunners of both punk and Krautrock, the Monks were a five-piece garage band made up of GIs stationed in Germany in the 1960s. With tribal drumbeats and unheard levels of abrasiveness and aggression, they stood far apart from arguably every other person playing rock 'n' roll music at the time, undoubtedly contributing to almost total obscurity until the re-issue of their first album, Black Monk Time, in 1994. Songs "I Hate You" and "Shut Up," delivered with a pronounced absurdism, were still light-years ahead of the pack in terms of open hostility. Like a punk-rock version of the Fugs or a way more far-out Troggs, the Monks' music was idiot simple and robotically repetitive, presaging the Fall, the Stooges -- pretty much everybody. They are also legendary for the fact that all the members shaved their heads into monk tonsures, wore black cassocks and nooses around their necks onstage, and had an amplified and almost unbearably tinny banjo instead of a rhythm guitar. They never enjoyed anything close to commercial success, but judging from the fact that they were rhyming the words "complication" and "constipation" in 1964, money and fame were not the object.

Guitarist Davie Allan cut his teeth writing the soundtracks of biker exploitation flicks. His recording career began in the mid-'60s and has essentially never stopped. His Surf sound began as a raucous combination of fuzztone, twang, and pounding drums that remains timeless in its simplicity. Allan continues to record and, if anything, he's now even more accomplished. He may make the same record over and over, but it's a great one.

Regardless of his abilities as a songwriter, Roky Erickson will forever be more famous for the details of his turbulent life. With legendary drug use, prison incarceration, and frequent stays in the nut house to his credit, his musical talents have often been obscured by a near-perfect record as a rock 'n' roll casualty/genius. After the 13th Floor Elevators were decimated by internal drug abuse and Texas-brand police harassment in the late 1960s, Erickson embarked on a convoluted, tragic solo career, rarely making it into the studio. Even when that feat was accomplished, he was often swindled out of the money owed him and his records sold poorly. Understandably, his music is not for the mainstream. With constant references to Satan, murderous, bloody imagery, and strands of creepy gibberish peppering his songs about how tough it is to be from the planet Mars, Erickson's work is tailor-made for that narrow section of society to which he appeals. While some of Erickson's material is for acolytes only (of which there are many), Roky Erickson & the Aliens (1980) features the same sort of demented Garage riffs and rock 'n' roll fervor that made songs such as "Roller Coaster" and "Fire Engine" so great. His latest efforts, acclaimed as a critical return to form, are of the acoustic variety and cover classics while also offering new, slightly more sedate material.

The Sonics peeled out of the Northwest in 1965 with Here Are the Sonics!!!, a display of all the good things that emerge from the garage when clamorous guitars and thumping R&B meet at a crossroads. Their music was raw as an open wound and wholly unrestrained -- traits that probably owed their existence to the teenaged band's penchant for full-throttle, amp-destroying music, not to mention their lack of technical ability which they celebrated instead of downplaying. The end result was rebellious noise that could rattle floors and send listeners into a foot-stomping frenzy. Even with so much dirty Grunge still caked in Seattle's corners and crevices, the Sonics produced music that makes what followed in their wake seem flat-out wimpy.

One-hit wonders from East Los Angeles who, in 1965, were one of the first Mexican American bands to hit high on the national charts. Their song? The incomparable "Land of 1000 Dances." A stompin' backbeat and a chorus of singers bellowing simple sing-a-long (and often nonsensical) lyrics fueled their sound.

The Castaways had a hit in 1965 with the Garage Rock classic "Liar, Liar," featuring the requisite wiggling keyboards and reverbed vocals. The song features some nasty guitar and a great falsetto in the refrain, giving it a Motown-as-interpreted-by-Frankie Valli-flavor. Apart from an appearance in a 1967 beach movie, the Castaways' career pretty much ends there. If it's the rugged sound of pre-punk Garage that you're looking for, the Castaways serve it up in an edgy little package with the added bonus of Soul-tinged pop savvy.
