In the early 1960s, the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson fused innovative chord arrangements with elastic-ranged vocal harmonies onto a foundation of Chuck Berry-inspired rock 'n' roll. The resulting music, set against a backdrop of surfing, girls, and cars, was unfortunately panned by the media as America's answer to Beatlemania. By the end of 1964, Wilson had retired from live performances to focus on composing and producing the band's recordings. Desperately trying to get the sounds from his head onto tape, the Beach Boys released the epic Pet Sounds in May of 1966. In the liner notes of this orchestrated pop masterpiece, Wilson admits that his aim was to write a "teenage symphony to God." Generally hailed as the greatest rock 'n' roll album ever, Pet Sounds struggled to attain the commercial success of the band's earlier suburban hymns. Although the Beach Boys (as well as Brian Wilson) went on to make many more successful albums, they never came close to approximating the innovative genius and transcendent, childlike innocence that was Pet Sounds.

These days, cop show "Hawaii Five-O" may seem cheesy so far from its '70s heyday but its title tune by the Ventures hasn't aged a day. The Ventures are the biggest selling instrumental rock group of all time: they created albums rather than just collections of songs and were able to adapt their "surf guitar" sound to a wide range of styles. The solid body Fender guitar sound of the Ventures' Bob Bogle and Don Wilson worked with surf, country, spy, and psychedelic music. Who but the Ventures could pull this off? Few have even tried. Busloads of rock guitarists profess the Ventures' influence (like the Who's Pete Townshend). With well over forty million albums sold, they are the definitive (and first) "big in Japan" act. Though their following is slightly more modest everywhere else, the Ventures will be cool forever.

Surf City's doors may have closed after Jan Berry's death in March of 2004, but the waves of West Coast beaches still pump in rhythmic sets to the surf music that he and his friend Dean Torrence pioneered in the late 1950s, predating the Beach Boys by three years. The duo met in a Los Angeles high school playing football and started singing doo-wop in a short lived band called the Barons. When they graduated and the band broke up, Berry was already spending hours in his garage, which he’d outfitted with some reel-to-reel recording devices. It was in this garage and on this tape machine where some of Torrence's and his demos of "Jennie Lee" and "Baby Talk" (which was a Top-10 hit in 1958) were overdubbed with a band and then became the actual recording pressed onto vinyl and distributed under the Jan And Dean moniker. After that first big splash, the duo began putting the sounds of the Malibu surf and hot rod scene into their music and in 1963 a kid named Brian Wilson, who had just started a band called the Pendletones (his precursor to the Beach Boys) and asked Jan and Dean to see if they could help him finish a song he was writing called "Surf City." Against his father Murray Wilson's wishes, Brian gave the single to Jan and Dean and it became their first (and last) gold record. Borrowing from doo-wop and the hep beach lingo, the surf sound was born.

Some people think Dick Dale is a crazy shaman, and a lot of other people believe that he actually invented Surf music in the early 1960s by first exploiting the sounds of a Fender Stratocaster as played through the cranked reverb chamber of a Fender Twin amplifier. His Latin-influenced, lightning speed, staccato, arpeggiated guitar playing has been copied by everyone who has ever played Surf music. The Beach Boys covered his "Let's Go Trippin'" and "Miserlou." Jimi Hendrix copied Dale's trademark guitar setup -- a right-handed Stratocaster flipped and strung southpaw. Hendrix best described the effect of Dale's playing when he muttered "You'll never wanna hear surf music again" on "Third Stone From The Sun" (which Dale would later cover).

"Surfin' Bird" is the lone hit for this mid-1960s beat combo. The song is a crude, off-the-cuff pastiche of the songs "The Bird's the Word" and "Papa Ooh Mow Mow" by California Doo-Wop group the Rivingtons. The Trashmen boil everything down to the most basic elements, pounding drums and crazy yelping vocals, with guitar and bass nothing more than rhythmic afterthoughts. The song is somewhat of an anthem for garage and '60s punk bands.
