George Winston is a consummate Contemporary Instrumental composer and performer who's achieved both commercial and critical success. His lilting, lyrical piano style is perhaps the defining sound of the Windham Hill label, conjuring seasonal images in impressionist, musical paintings. Winston draws on jazz, blues, pop and folk for his compositions, creating a sparse, dynamic and moving blend. His music is so intensely personal and draining, it makes sense that so much time passes between each of his albums. Winston has also written emotive music for films such as The Velveteen Rabbit and Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes.

It's almost a shame to label him a new age artist, for Michael Hedges' guitar playing was so incredible, it transcended countless stylistic boundaries. Hedges referred to his style as "heavy mental" and "new edge," among other names, with the ability to range from soft and self-absorbed to as aggressive as acoustic playing gets. On the albums Aerial Boundaries and Live On the Double Planet, he invented, perfected or reinvigorated many extended techniques on the guitar, from his violent two-handed tapping and frenzied Ritchie Havens strumming to bright percussive harmonics and deep, contemplative drones. His guitars were often tuned in a manner to allow rich, open-sounding harmonies and multiple intertwining melodies -- most prominently on his large combination harp-guitar. He died in late 1997 following an automobile accident on the Northern California coast.

Though they come from different hemispheres and distant musical realms, these two musicians converge on a metaphysical plane to produce brilliant music together. Recognized as one of the greatest fingerstyle steel-string guitar players, Alex de Grassi has recorded highly acclaimed records for new age label Windham Hill. On the other side of this musical equation, Chile native Quique Cruz plays the charango (a petite guitar), as well as folkloric drums, flutes and panpipes. The duo's original compositions are based on Andean rhythms transformed with a jazz swing or blues shuffle. The ensemble, which includes unobtrusive (yet precise) drumming, brushed cymbals, acoustic bass and superb piano work courtesy of Michael Bluestein, coalesces the strings and flutes of de Grassi and Cruz with subtlety and grace. As if in service of greater form, the musicians seem to leave their egos aside as they respond to one another with seriousness, joy and jazz-like spontaneity.

Liona Boyd's mastery of the guitar has made her one of the few modern classical crossover stars. Her sensitive touch drew praise from Christopher Parkening and, the master himself, Andreas Segovia. During the mid-'70s this lovely British-born blond quickly became a household name in her adopted home of Canada for her Spanish guitar recitals and albums. She then went on to international acclaim with the help of her numerous television appearances and her collaborations with popular guitarists Eric Clapton, Chet Atkins and David Gilmour. Boyd works really well in such company because she remains true to her artistic strengths and never tries to water down or "rock out." Today, both high-minded music critics and the public continue to embrace her work.

British guitarist Simpson is a modern master of the acoustic guitar and a stand-out electric player as well, effortlessly weaving together many styles with his intricate picking and plucking. His guitars are generally tuned with deep drones and unusual open strings, resulting in a style that's unlike that of any other guitarist, and many look to recreate his distinct sound. A major part of his appeal is the taste and beauty of the chords and melodies he plays, which trace the links from English and Celtic Folk to the country and blues of the United States. He often wraps his work in a gentle, easygoing new age feel that never seems to go musically dry, unlike many of his contemporaries in the genre. Recently, he collaborated with Chinese pipa player Wu Man for an elaborate deconstruction of world music barriers -- something Simpson has always excelled at.
