One of grupero's longest-running and most successful groups, Bronco formed back in 1982 in Monterrey, Mexico. For a while, the group was best known for their lack of definition -- they played a range of styles which were only unified by a certain norteno flavor. At first fans and critics didn't know what to do with the sound, but they finally caught on when songs like "Sergio El Bailador" and "Amigo Bronco" started an avalanche of hits that surged through Mexico and even north of the border to the United States.

Formed in San Jose, Calif., at the dawn of the 1970s, Los Tigres del Norte -- comprising the Hernandez brothers of Sinaloa and drummer Oscar Lara-- had been playing music together since they were children, but it wasn't until impresario Art Walker heard them in San Jose in the late '60s that they began to take themselves seriously as a band. Walker signed them to his new label Fama Records, and the group began to have limited success, playing throughout San Jose's growing Mexican district and getting some airplay. But the group truly coalesced when bandleader and vocalist Jorge Hernandez heard a singer in Los Angeles perform "Contrabando y Traicion." The dramatic narco-corrido was unlike anything he'd ever heard, and it became the group's break-out single in 1971. "Contrabando y Traicion" told the story of a Bonnie and Clyde-esque drug-running couple with a flair and drama not seen before in narco-corridos, and the hit spun off legions of imitators who invented further adventures for the ruthless fictional heroine, Camelia La Tejana, as well as a slew of songs in a similar vein. Early hits like "La Banda del Carro Rojo" followed up on "Contrabando y Traicion"'s success and cemented the band's place as a corridos powerhouse. Though pioneers of the narco-corrido, the band has never allowed itself to be pigeonholed in that genre, refusing to name real drug traffickers in their songs (unlike many other groups) and shunning the gun-glorifying imagery associated with the genre. Their diverse repertoire includes love songs, songs about the immigrant experience in the U.S., and critical commentaries on Mexican politics. They spearheaded the movement to write songs about the immigrant experience with the 1976 single "Vivan Los Mojados," a still-relevant track that questions what would happen to American agriculture if all the "wetbacks" were sent back to Mexico. "La Jaula de Oro" (The Gold Cage) is widely considered a masterpiece; it deals with the alienation a longtime immigrant can still feel in the United States. In 2000, stars of rock and pop came together to pay homage to the group with an album of covers, El Mas Grande Homenaje A Los Tigres Del Norte, which acknowledged the group's massive contributions to music north and south of the border. After three decades, Los Tigres del Norte have become less a band than an institution, a defining voice for over a generation of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans.

Sister to singer Lupillo Rivera and daughter of impresario Pedro Rivera, Jenni Rivera is a new kind of diva. She may sing mariachi and corridos, but her lyrical subjects are anything but small-town. One of Rivera's early hits, "La Chacalosa," details the career of a drug-dealing teenage girl who builds an empire. Despite her family connections, Rivera came to narco-corridos late in life. She grew up in Los Angeles listening to Anglo pop music and speaking English when not at home, but when she started working at her father's record label, she began to take more of an interest in the music he was producing. She composed her first corrido in 1994, crafting a tough persona to go along with it. Though inspired by singers like Barbra Streisand, and very much a fan of romantic music, Rivera understands her fan base's attachment to her streetwise persona. Her music has made her beloved by a generation of fans who grew up in American ghettos but still connect with the music of their Mexican heritage. Despite a charmed career, Rivera's personal life has been touched by tragedy: Her ex-husband, Jose Trinidad Marin, was convicted in 2007 of molesting their two daughters and Rivera's sister.

This long-running banda group bucked the trends and came out of Jalisco, a state not known for its bandas. In 1987, local impresario Arturo Macias put out a call to audition young musicians -- and more than 70 kids showed up. After Macias had assembled his group, Banda Cuisillos Musical de Arturo Macias began playing at local festivals and accompanying religious events. In 1993 the group signed to Polygram Records and released two albums that brought them modest success; they moved to Musart in 1995, dropped the "Musical" from their name, and found the formula that would work for them: alternating ballads with cumbias and rancheros. They also started wearing Apache costumes -- a cheap ploy that helped distinguish them from the competition. By the end of the '90s, the group's success in Mexico had translated to the United States, and they continued to rack up hits, thanks to releases like 2002's Homenaje a Joan Sebastian. The band's fortunes have waxed and waned, recently resurging with 2007's Mil Heridas and 2008's Vive y Dejame Vivir.

This madly prolific norteno powerhouse came out of Chihuahua, Mexico in 1978 and has become something of an institution in the regional music world ever since. Founded by saxophonist Juan Dominguez, the group broke into public consciousness in early '80s with songs like "Amigo Mesero" and stayed there thanks to a talent for keeping their sound -- which they've described as grupero/norteno fusion -- fresh. But the group didn't achieve true superstar status until 1998, when hits like "Perdoname Mi Amor" and "Necessito Decirte" colonized the charts and made them staples of the airwaves. The group also has a heart: they're known for charitable work that includes donating money to aid children with cancer and building a school and a breakfast cafeteria in their home state.

Formed in 1999 by Oscar Urbina (and heavily loaded with Urbina family members), this leading Duranguense group got its start playing in Chicago, Ill. Alacranes Musical's sound has one foot in the past -- the sound hearkens back to tamborazo zacatecano, a style popular during the Mexican revolution -- while the instrumentation (electric bass, brass and synthesizers) has its foot firmly planted in the present. Part of the original flowering of Duranguense in Chicago, the group was catapulted to stardom in 2004 with the release of A Cambio De Que. A run of chart-topping singles and awards followed; the group now plays alongside the biggest names in regional Mexican music.

He's norteno's first official singer-songwriter, a talent who has absorbed the music of his native Sinaloa while putting his own stamp on everything he does. Paz reportedly penned his first song at age 11 to impress a crush. (Even then he must have known talent gets a girl's attention.) His father sent money from the States for a guitar, and Paz went on to teach himself to play. As a young adult he began writing songs as Isidro Chavez Espinoza, but his creative trajectory was interrupted when he immigrated to California in 1996 to work in the fields. After his mother died, Paz returned to Sinaloa and continued writing songs. Following one more agricultural stint in Oregon, Paz finally devoted himself to songwriting in Mexico, and his songs eventually ended up in the hands of major stars such as El Coyote, Sergio Vega, Banda el Limon, Banda Cuisillos (he penned their hit "Mil Heridas"), Duelo, Autentica de Jerez, Jenni Rivera and others. He won Composer of the Year at the 2009 Billboard Awards and brought home his second ASCAP-BMI award for Latin Songwriter of the Year, while also beginning to see success for his own singing.

Los Huracanes del Norte really got their start in the south, when founder Heraclio "Rocky" Garcia sang as a young boy in Jalisco with his famous grandfather, singer Don Jesus Ruvalcaba. That experience put a love for music in Garcia's blood that stayed with him, even when his family immigrated to San Jose, California when he was just 11 years old. In 1972 he formed Los Huracanes del Norte with his two brothers, though the group didn't have a name at the time. As the story goes, they were just finishing their first recording and were having a terrible time coming up with a name, so they asked the delivery guy for a suggestion. He came up with Los Huracanes del Norte and a legend was born. Thanks to steady gigs and a constant stream of hits for over thirty years, the group is less a pop phenomenon an! d more an institution in the norteno circuit. In recent years the group has expanded to bring in new members, including Garcia's son, Antonio "El Guero" Garcia and Jose Luis Mejia.

This Texas supergroup's four frontmen had more than 200 years of experience playing live and recording between them. A left-field hybrid of norteno, Swamp Pop, rock 'n' roll, blues, country and everything in between, Texas Tornadoes were fronted by Tejano star Flaco Jimenez, '60s rock icon Doug Sahm, crooner Freddy Fender, and Sahm's cohort from the Sir Douglas Quintet, Augie Meyers. The Tornadoes hit the country charts with their debut album -- quite a feat considering how far removed from the Nashville norm the group's sound was. Though they never repeated that success on their subsequent records, the band retained a large and loyal worldwide following. They disbanded after the unexpected death of Doug Sahm in 1999.

Alicia Villareal was the face of the norteno Grupo Limite and a talented artist in her own right. A compelling frontwoman, Villareal's distinctive, almost child-like voice helped catapult the band to the top of the charts when they debuted. Her solo work plumbs the same vein, and Villareal has proven to be a talented songwriter as well. While her heart lies with "la nortena", she does branch out into balladry, Latin pop and even reggaeton.

Duranguense heavyweights K-Paz de la Sierra may hail from the Mexican state of Durango -- and play its bouncy, upbeat music -- but they got their start in Illinois. The group members met in Chicago in 2003 and quickly rose to the top of the ranks of regional Mexican music: After releasing a few singles to immediate acclaim, including the hit "Jambalaya," their debut, Arrasando con Fuego, shot up the charts. Subsequent albums performed equally well, and the band seemed poised for a long career. Strife has marred K-Paz's success, however; the group splintered in 2007, when five members left to start their own band, AK-7, after disputes with lead singer Sergio Gomez. Six months later, Gomez was found dead, tortured and murdered after a show in Morelia, Michoacan.

Stars of the grupero movement of the 1990s, Guardianes del Amor have dedicated themselves to keeping up with the times, listening to hip-hop and even incorporating bits of urban regional into their sound in order to remain relevant to younger listeners (thanks to A. But that willingness to experiment hasn't changed their romantic focus; starting with the chart-topping "Cuatro Palabras," the group lives up to their name, defending love against all real or imagined invaders and prolifically releasing records at the same time.

Fronted by a Selena-voiced singer who wears a cowboy hat and boots, this group burst onto the Tejano scene in 1996 with their million seller Por Puro Amor (Unconditional Love). Aside from the talented and beautiful singer, they write catchy tunes played by a tight rhythm section and a tasteful accordion.

This massively prolific duo got their start in Camargo in Mexico's Tamaulipas state in 1968, led by accordionist and singer Carlos Salazar. Bajo sexto player Jose Rodriguez anchors the sound, and their backing group includes sax, percussion and electric bass. The band has enjoyed consistent success over the years. Early hits included "El Nuevo Albur De Amor" and the corrido "La Mata De Sandia."

Young as they are, los Cuates de Sinaloa have already begun to revitalize regional Mexican music in the U.S. Two young cousins, Gabriel and Nano Berrelleza, crossed into the U.S. when they were just 14 years old, landing in Phoenix, Ariz. The cousins struggled to find work until friends pitched in and bought them a cell phone; pretty soon they were working the quinceanera circuit, playing parties and ultimately finding a manager who helped them self-produce six albums before they signed to Sony Norte. The duo's stark and unadorned mountain music, known as sierreno, provides marked contrast to much of the regional music scene, featuring only two acoustic guitars and a bass. Los Cuates have drawn comparisons to the young los Tigres del Norte for their frank depictions of corruption and drugs -- making some afraid for their safety.

Flaco Jimenez is the undisputed king of Tex-Mex accordion. Son of Santiago Jimenez, one of the first to introduce the accordion into norteno music and inventor of the conjunto sound, Flaco has ventured beyond these traditional styles into country music and rock. His flashy, rapid style of play and forthright singing, done mostly in Spanish, can be heard on recordings by Ry Cooder and the Rolling Stones. His crossover appeal to country audiences is witnessed by his participation in the Texas Tornados, a supergroup that includes Freddie Fender and the members of the Sir Douglas Quintet. Perhaps more than any other artist, he is responsible for placing the variety of Tex-Mex music on the world stage. Nobody can rock a Polka like Flaco.

Renowned for playing norteno music in what's been dubbed their "estilo Chihuahua" -- named for their home state in Mexico -- Los Rieleros del Norte have established themselves as one of norteno's most solid bands. Now located in Pecos, Texas, the group was formed by brothers Daniel, Alfredo and Javier Esquivel and Eugenio Gonzalez in 1979 at a time when several of them were working on the railroads (hence the name). Over 30 albums later, many consider the group a trail-blazing act.

Lupillo Rivera didn't start out as a singer. Born in La Barca (in Jalisco, Mexico) and raised in Long Beach, California, the young Rivera was contemplating a career in the decidedly unglamorous field of restaurant management when his father Pedro Rivera invited him to join his new label. Lupillo worked as a talent scout for several years before deciding to try his hand at singing himself. He recorded an album which his father produced and discovered he had an audience waiting: within a few years Rivera would be the first Los Angeles-based Mexican musician to sell out LA's Universal Amphitheater.

Legendary norteno musician Cornelio Reyna also played the bajo sexto guitar, but he'll be remembered primarily as a singer and composer. He started with accordionist Ramon Ayala in Los Relampagos Del Norte, an influential conjunto in the '60s. By the '70s he was hugely popular on both sides of the Mexico-U.S border for his sentimental songs of suffering.

This slick banda five-piece formed in Santa Maria del Oro, Durango in 2000. They became regional favorites with their debut, Con Todo El Corazon. Their follow-up, Atardecer Canta Corridos, came only ten months later and it cemented them as a force to be reckoned with as their fame spread to Chihuahua and finally to regional Mexican radio stations in Mexico and the U.S. Not to be confused with the pirekua band of the same name.
