Considered the king of the rancheros, Fernandez's romantic, nostalgic sound typifies old Mexico. He wields exquisite control over his voice, surging from intimacy to drama at the drop of a hat. Fernandez is heir to singers like Jorge Negrete and Pedro Infante, but his story is also bound up with the rise of television. Born in Jalisco in 1940, Fernandez had his first brush with musical success when he won a Guadalajara singing contest. But it wasn't until he won a small role on a television show called La Calandria Musical that his career really got moving. He began singing for many of the major mariachi groups of the 1950s, and famously gave an impassioned concert in Mexico City just after learning his father had died.

Alejandro Fernandez is the kind of guy with whom you could hole up in a $3 million dollar home in the high desert and talk about your feelings all night. He'd do it and he'd be into it -- at least that's the impression you get from his gentle, soulful pop and occasional mariachi forays. The guy hasn't got a mean bone in his body, and he's got a discography to prove it.

One of the most successful singers ever in the Spanish language, the flamboyant and effeminate Juan Gabriel has been a prolific force on the Mexican music scene since the 1970s. From a large family with a story of tragic dimensions, Gabriel began writing songs and performing as a teenager at a cabaret in Tijuana. Upon relocating to Mexico City in '71, he scored his first of many hits with the song "No Tengo Dinero" (I Don't Have Money). His naturally perfect pitch and emotional delivery are well suited to the romantic songs he sings, and his breathy whispers are the embodiment of seduction. With a repertoire that includes ballads, full-blown Mariachi songs and light Latin Pop, Gabriel has been a constant presence on the Latin charts, selling more than 60 million records. Known for spectacular shows that stretch out to several hours, he transcends the limitations of a large arena, spontaneously dancing around the stage in his white linen suit like a preacher delivering a sentimental message of love to an enraptured audience.

Pepe Aguilar is the son of famed cowboy singer and actor Antonio Aguilar; his mother, Flor Silvestre, was also a famous singer in the 1950s and '60s. His pure voice drips like honey through several octaves as he sings Mariachi ballads that leave his adoring fans -- mostly women -- in tears. Using the traditional instrumentation of guitars, violins, trumpets and occasional accordion, he has created a modern, sophisticated style known as "lovers' Mariachi." With seven gold and three platinum discs under his big belt buckle, he stands to inherit his family legacy as a famed actor as well. His megahit "Por Mujeres Como Tu," expresses his sensitive and romantic side succinctly -- "For women like you / There exist men like me / Who would die for dignity."

One of the giants of Mexican music, Jose Alfredo Jimenez was a musical genius who was reportedly composing songs by the times he was age nine. (He composed the hit song "El Jinete" when he was only eleven years old.) Revered equally for his singing style and for the compositions he fed into the Mexican musical lexicon, Jimenez was also a renegade bolero who shifted bolero's focus from the metaphorical to the physical with songs like "Ella" which spoke eloquently -- and simply -- of love and heartbreak. His delivery of songs like "Cuatro Caminos" has a kind of ferocity that is only rivaled by Chavela Vargas. Jimenez's songs helped shape the careers of artists like Pedro Infante, Amalia Mendoza, Lola Beltran and others. Jimenez was known for his wild lifestyle, which is no surprise in light of the sudden fame and fortune following his first 1950 hit and the string of successes that followed until his death from hepatitis in 1973.

Gaspar Vargas (father of Silvestre) started Mariachi Vargas in 1897. You
read that right -- 1897. This band basically invented modern mariachi, and
they're still playing today. The group formed in a small Mexican town
called Tecalitlan (south of Jalisco), and they spent their formative years
defining their sound and experimenting with different instrumental lineups.
Silvestre Vargas took over in the 1930s, bringing a level of
professionalism (and sobriety!) that made them oddities in their field --
and ultimately helped them cement their status as a premier mariachi band.
They played behind all the great singers, including Jose Alfredo Jimenez,
and continue to drive the form forward today under ever-evolving leadership.

Javier Solis, nee Gabriel Siria Levario, had a typical hard-scrabble story. Born into a poor family in Mexico City in 1931, he dropped out of school at the age of ten and took odd jobs to help his family get by. Boxing and singing were his twin passions, and when he won a local singing contest (the prize was reportedly a pair of shoes), he left boxing by the wayside. At age sixteen he sang with the Mariachi Mepetec, and just a few years later he was discovered singing in a nightclub by Julito Rodriguez and Alfredo Gil of the Trio Los Panchos. A record deal followed, and his star rose quickly. He starred in a number of films with stars including Lola Beltran. After Pedro Infante's death in 1957, Solis took over as the reigning king of ranchera until his untimely demise nine years later.

Known as "La Reina de la musica ranchera" (Queen of ranchera music), Mexican singer Lola Beltran enjoyed tremendous success until her death in 1996. Gifted with precise vocal control and powerful projection not unlike that of an opera singer, she touched the hearts of many, singing with rapturous virtuosity. Discovered while working at a radio station, Beltran achieved overnight success when she began recording in '54. Her regal facade was perfect for presenting the sad, emotional songs of the traditional ranchera and Mariachi styles. As a prolific recording artist she received a multitude of gold records and performed to huge, adoring audiences throughout Mexico as well as in Paris, New York City and even Moscow. She also produced and acted in Mexican popular films such as Cucurrucucu Paloma. With her musical legacy she remains a crucial icon of Mexican culture.

Blessed with a voice that would rival an opera legend, Mexican singer Jorge Negrete remains a living icon of national pride long after his death. Born during the upheaval of the Mexican revolution, Jorge first came to attention for his work on Mexican radio, later making his way to New York City, where he was offered a job singing with the Metropolitan Opera. His commanding baritone voice made an instant impression on audiences, but he decided to forgo opera and signed a film contract with RCA. He made his first picture in 1937 and quickly became the top actor in the Mexican cinema. His image -- a sombrero resting over his handsome, mustachioed face -- became immediately recognizable. He rushed into a whirlwind of work, making more than forty films and numerous recordings, including popular songs from his movies. Self-consciously dignified yet incurably romantic, the Mariachi and ranchera songs he recorded have become part of a universal Latin American consciousness, much like his dashing image. After helping launch the golden age of cinema, he died during its peak in 1953 from chronic hepatitis.

Lupillo Rivera didn't start out as a singer. Born in La Barca (in Jalisco, Mexico) and raised in Long Beach, California, the young Rivera was contemplating a career in the decidedly unglamorous field of restaurant management when his father Pedro Rivera invited him to join his new label. Lupillo worked as a talent scout for several years before deciding to try his hand at singing himself. He recorded an album which his father produced and discovered he had an audience waiting: within a few years Rivera would be the first Los Angeles-based Mexican musician to sell out LA's Universal Amphitheater.

Legendary norteno musician Cornelio Reyna also played the bajo sexto guitar, but he'll be remembered primarily as a singer and composer. He started with accordionist Ramon Ayala in Los Relampagos Del Norte, an influential conjunto in the '60s. By the '70s he was hugely popular on both sides of the Mexico-U.S border for his sentimental songs of suffering.

In 1953 Pancho Pulido, leader of the Mariachi Pulido, was ready to hand over the reins. Musician and former second-in-command Pepe Villa took over, renaming the group Mariachi Mexico de Pepe Villa. Within a few years Villa had taken the group to unimagined heights: he introduced the two-trumpet mariachi sound, which became all the rage. Mariachi Mexico enjoyed a string of hits through the 1950s, '60s and '70s. After Villa's death in 1986, his sons took over the group, maintaining its focus and traditions.

Pablo Montero looks good with his shirt off -- no doubt -- but this Mexican telenovela actor isn't just another pretty face: he can really sing. Montero claims his heart has always been with singing first and foremost and given his velvety voice and intimate delivery, we're inclined to believe him. Born in Torreon in the state of Coahuila, he gained fame as an actor in telenovelas such as Abrazame Muy Fuerte. But it seems he pours soul into his romantic mariachi career, which launched in 1999 with the release of Donde Estas Corazon.

Ana Barbara can thank her beauty for her fame -- literally. Born in Rio Verde, San Luis Potosi, Barbara was always an enthusiastic singer who would serenade her family at every opportunity, but her first brush with fame came when she won a beauty contest and became Senorita San Luis Potosi -- officially the most beautiful woman in her home state. That win led to opportunities to sing on various television shows, which led to more contest wins and ultimately gave her the opportunity to sing for Pope John Paul II in 1993. With the realization of that dream, everything else came easy; in 1994 she recorded her first (self-titled) album for Fonovisa Records. It promptly went gold in Mexico and Bolivia, so Barbara released a second album hot on the heels of her first. By the end of the year she was known as "La Reina Grupera," but Barbara hasn't rested on her laurels, recording relentlessly and always experimenting with her mix of pop, cumbia, grupero and other styles.

Directed by Jalisco-born, Los Angeles-based Nati Cano since 1961 (!), Mariachi Los Camperos are something of a North American mariachi institution. They collaborated with Linda Ronstadt on her 1987 Canciones de Mi Padre, and they shared a Grammy for the 2005 tribute to children's musician Ella Jenkins, cELLAbration!. Though sparsely recorded in the 1970s and '80s, the group has returned to prominence in recent years, scoring a Grammy nomination for 2005's excellent compilation of live favorites, Llegaron Los Camperos!.
