This Mexican supergroup represents a true boys-to-men story. Marco Antonio Solis formed the group in the 1970s when he and the others were little more than teenagers. Despite their youth, they convinced a record label to sign them, and the group released its first album, Falso Amor, in 1975. Though the album consisted mainly of covers (it included just three originals), it was the Solis-penned title track that became a massive hit. On the next album he was deputized to write all the songs, and the subsequent hits quickly established him as one of Mexico's hottest young songwriters and singers. As the group transitioned into the 1980s, some members left and others joined, but Solis remained the anchor -- the face, voice and creative drive behind the group. Their international acclaim spread, and the ninth album proved to be the charm: the 1986 release Me Volvi Acordar De Ti sold 1.5 million copies internationally and won Album of the Year at the inaugural Premios lo Nuestro in 1989. After several more lineup changes and platinum-selling releases, the group announced in 1996 that it was disbanding. Solis released his first solo album, En Pleno Vuelo, that year.

After establishing himself as a popular soap opera actor in his native Colombia, Carlos Vives began his career as a singer in 1994 with the album Classicos de la Provincia. A handsome young man with long hair, Vives is a natural performer whose charisma is obvious, especially to young women. He began by playing a style of music called vallenato, which is similar to Cumbia but was thought of as an uncool music for country folk. His modern version bumped up the bass and drums a notch but maintained a traditional accordion and indigenous flute. Working with top-notch producers such as Emilio Estefan, his voice became a constant presence on Latin radio and in discos throughout Latin America. Obviously influenced by the tropical sounds of Juan Luis Guerra, he also acknowledges a debt to the sophisticated Latin Rock that developed in Argentina. His looks may have launched his career, but it's his talent that sustains it.

The story of Los Angeles de Charly begins -- appropriately enough -- with Charly. Born Charly Bencies in Mexico's Federal District, Charly spent a lot of time in Veracruz as a youth, where he learned his first songs and discovered that he could earn food and money if he sang for people in his unique style, which came to be known as "el estilo Charly." In 1999, with an ironic nod at the television show of the same name, Bencies formed Los Angeles de Charly. Within the year they'd released La Magia Del Amor, a wildly successful album that sold huge amounts in the United States and exported the group's special brand of romantic cumbia to a legion of grateful regional Mexican music fans.

As Carlos Vives slowly withdrew from the charts in the 21st century, room
opened up for a new pop-Vallenato star. Enter Juan Fernando Fonseca. Just 22
years old when he released his eponymous 2002 debut in his native Colombia,
Fonseca saw that album catapult him to instant stardom: songs like "Noche De
Carnaval," "Sueno" and "Magangue" became standard club fare. His 2006
follow-up Corazon broke him internationally with "Te Mando Flores"
and proved that the singer, while clearly treading a path first worn by
Vives and Juanes, is evolving his own voice.

Effervescent, energetic and explosively hip, Bomba Estereo is a party waiting to happen -- and one usually does at this Colombian outfit's vibrant shows, which combine live instruments and vocals with sampling, and typically involve live projections from Colombian video artists. Simon Mejia (programmer/bassist/lead looper) and Liliana Saumet (vocalist) formed the group in their hometown of Bogota in 2005 and went on to add percussionist Diego Cadavid, drummer Kiki Egurrola and guitarist Julian Salazar to the mix. That mix, by the way, blends dub, hip-hop and electronic dance music with Afro-Caribbean rhythms and Colombian folk and pop styles like cumbia, champeta and bullerengue. The group's exciting eclecticism and infectious party vibe earned it gigs opening for the likes of Calle 13 and Pacha Massive and a critically acclaimed spot at SXSW. Nacional Records released their Columbian debut Vol. 1 in 2006, followed by their international second album, which was released in Latin America as Estalla in 2008 and in North America as Blow Up in 2009.

As Selena's elder brother and chief songwriter, A.B. Quintanilla has been in the music business longer than many guys his age -- and he's seen a lot of change. He forsook music altogether for some time after his sister's death, and slowly re-entered the field as a songwriter for some of the biggest names in the business. But he found he missed playing music live and crafting a cohesive sound, so he founded the Kumbia Kings in 2000. The band shot to the top of the charts with hits like "Sshhh" and "No Tengo Dinero," but internal disagreements took their toll on the band. After the Kumbia Kings' acrimonious dissolution, A.B. Quintanilla licked his wounds and started again with the Kumbia All Starz, a group of young musicians who seem happy to bow to Quintanilla's musical will. Maintaining the boy-band-meets-cumbia vibe of the Kumbia Kings, the Kumbia All Starz have also invited fresher sounds like reggaeton into their musical stable.

Accordionist Alfredo Gutierrez is famous for his Colombian roots music -- Cumbia and vallenato. These mid-tempo dance styles feature drums, scraper, electric bass, and of course, the predominant accordion. Often silly, his songs have a Caribbean swing that makes them highly danceable.

Fito Olivares, a native of Tamaulipas, Mexico, started out playing saxophone at the urging of his father. But the boy couldn't quench his desire to play accordion, and he took it up as a teen. Once he did, Olivares realized he needed to play drums, piano, and several other instruments -- so he learned those too. At age sixteen he joined the Dueto Estrella, and in 1979 he joined Tam y Tex, a group which included his brothers Jaime and Javier and brother-in-law Jacinto Treviño. In 1980 the group became Fito Olivares y su Grupo La Pura Sabrosura, and Olivares began to crossover into the Tejano market in the U.S. and charted steadily through the 1990s. A cumbia veteran and pioneering songwriter, Olivares remains a key player in Mexican regional music.

This San Diego band first met in 1994 at an African drumming workshop. After they discovered a shared love for acid jazz, roots reggae and Chicano culture, it was only a matter of time before the group began playing together. Formed under the dual inspirations of Carlos Santana and Bob Marley, the band crafted a bilingual funk/cumbia/reggae/rock hybrid that promotes conscious lyricism, culture and family. Lead singer Karlos Paez has the Jamaican whine down, but the band shines the most when its members' Chicano heritage and Rastafarian inspirations get equal airtime. After a few bad experiences with producers who wanted to turn the group's organic sound into a replica of Ozomatli's increasingly hip-hop-dominated aesthetic, the group found their own way forward with their 2007 debut on Concord Records, Fire in the Youth.

He struck out on his own in 2004 with his eponymous debut, bringing the winning Kumbia Kings formula with him: he mingles cumbia with rap, reggaeton and the ubiquitous if unfortunate balladry.

Ana Barbara can thank her beauty for her fame -- literally. Born in Rio Verde, San Luis Potosi, Barbara was always an enthusiastic singer who would serenade her family at every opportunity, but her first brush with fame came when she won a beauty contest and became Senorita San Luis Potosi -- officially the most beautiful woman in her home state. That win led to opportunities to sing on various television shows, which led to more contest wins and ultimately gave her the opportunity to sing for Pope John Paul II in 1993. With the realization of that dream, everything else came easy; in 1994 she recorded her first (self-titled) album for Fonovisa Records. It promptly went gold in Mexico and Bolivia, so Barbara released a second album hot on the heels of her first. By the end of the year she was known as "La Reina Grupera," but Barbara hasn't rested on her laurels, recording relentlessly and always experimenting with her mix of pop, cumbia, grupero and other styles.

Fruko is often called the godfather of Colombian Salsa, but his importance is not limited to one musical style. He started playing timbales at age 12 for his country's principal record label, Discos Fuentes; later, as a bassist, he became the label's top producer and arranger. In addition to countless recordings with his group Los Tesos, he has also worked with the Latin Brothers and the Cumbia supergroup Sonora Dinamita. Leading the way, he took classic Cuban Son and other Caribbean rhythms and infused them with the energy of New York Salsa, thus creating a vibrant new spin on the Salsa style.

Stars of the grupero movement of the 1990s, Guardianes del Amor have dedicated themselves to keeping up with the times, listening to hip-hop and even incorporating bits of urban regional into their sound in order to remain relevant to younger listeners (thanks to A. B. Quintanilla's influence). But that willingness to experiment hasn't changed their romantic focus; starting with the chart-topping "Cuatro Palabras," the group lives up to their name, defending love against all real or imagined invaders and prolifically releasing records at the same time.

Headed by a quartet of sassy, silken-haired young ladies, Aroma's other 10 members just provide the music. It all started when producer Ignacio Rodriguez heard a recording of a singer called Techi while he was in Paraguay. He was so taken with her voice he invited her to sing live at an upcoming Los Angeles de Charly event in Asuncion. The night of the performance, Rodriguez offered her a job as the head of a group that had no name or other members. She accepted and moved to Mexico City, where she met Tatiana, the group's first dancer. After slowly accumulating musicians and two other frontwomen (Marbella and Ana Bel), the group recorded its first album in 2001, launching the hits "Mentiras" and "Querido Ladron" in the process. By 2002 the cumbia group had become the full spectacle it is today, including a stable of dancers, singers, musicians and a light show.

Austin, Texas's native sons and Latin funk sensations Grupo Fantasma have gotten some high-profile love of late -- they were chosen to be a resident band at Prince's Las Vegas nightclub in 2007, and they backed the Purple One in his pre-Super Bowl shows in 2007. Prince's high-profile support aside, the band was already a favorite in Austin, where they formed in 2000 and consistently wowed fans with their high-energy live shows and massive horn section. The band's liberal use of cumbia, salsa, mambo and any other Latin style that takes their fancy makes for an inspired, mongrel sound.

This Bolivian supergroup started out as a wedding band in the early '90s in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. By the late '90s, they had become Bolivia's premier pop group thanks to a headlining run in the Carnival and the global hit "La Bomba." 1998's El Sapo proved the turning point, going multiplatinum in Bolivia, platinum in Mexico and gold in numerous other countries thanks to its winning combination of pop, folklorico and reggae. Despite some lineup changes, the band continues to be led by founder Fabio Zambrana and Ricardo Fries.

This Mexican actress has innumerable websites devoted to her, ahem, assets after eye-catching turns in telenovelas and after playing herself on 2004's Big Brother VIP Mexico 3. You might think her 2003 self-titled solo release was just a cynical J.Lo-esque bid at total media domination, but in fact Conde's got an extremely pleasant pop voice and her singing strikes a nice balance between familiarity and sweetness.

Television personality Mariana has been trying to extend her celebrity to the music world for years. Lo Se…, released in 1998, didn't do the trick, but when she released Sere Una Nina Buena in 2004, audiences seemed ready for the romantic, upbeat cumbia sound she'd adopted. "Me Equivoque" hovered in the charts for several months, while "Que No Me Faltes Tu" swam almost to the top.
