Colombia's Juanes was raised on music: he learned guitar under the tutelage of his father and brothers, and cut his teeth on everyone from Nueva Cancion singer Silvio Rodriguez to Led Zeppelin and Eminem. He's absorbed diverse influences from around Latin America, from vallenato and salsa to punk. After a stint with Latin Rock band Ekhymosis, Juanes struck out on his own in the late 1990s. The result of his musical explorations is evident: he's got a powerful sense of dynamics that keeps the sensitivity in check with swinging rhythms and expert instrumental flourishes. No two songs on his solo albums sound alike, and the personal and political comfortably rub shoulders in his work. Even his pop-oriented efforts maintain a certain subtlety, and his Latin Grammys are clearly richly deserved. One to watch for years to come.

Ex-thrash metal bandmates turned itinerant musicians, Mexican musicians Rodrigo and Gabriela met in Mexico in the band Terra Acida. Not much later, they gave up their electric guitars, wandered through Europe and settled in Dublin. Inspired by flamenco's technical virtuosity, the duo began playing a fiery (if less mournful) version of flamenco that brings bands like Led Zeppelin and Metallica into the musical fold. The group polished their chops busking in Dublin's Grafton Street and, after gaining a devoted following there, they started seducing audiences outside Ireland. Their first album Foc was named for the Catalan word for fire (perhaps with some double entendres attached). In 2006, they teamed with producer John Leckie (Stone Roses, Radiohead) to record their self-titled international debut.

One of the few artists to have hits in both English and Spanish, Jose Feliciano is an easily identifiable pop icon. As a blind singer and guitarist, he first received attention playing in the coffeehouses of Greenwich Village while still in high school. His passionate, soulful voice and Flamenco guitar embellishments catapulted him into the pop mainstream, and his version of the Doors' "Light My Fire" topped the hit parade in 1968; he even performed the national anthem at the World Series that year. He could be seen regularly on network television in the 1970s performing songs such as "Feelings." A prolific recording artist, he recorded light versions of popular rock songs that were embellished with strings and marketed to mature audiences. Although first cast under the American spotlight, he ended up more popular with Latino audiences.

Lila Downs is a bicultural border-crosser who grew up both in Minnesota and the Sierra Madre mountains and Oaxaca in Mexico. She has a strong interest in Mexico's native cultures; her mother is a Zapotec Indian, and Downs has studied and sung in languages including Zapotec, Nahuatl, Maya and Mixtec. Though as a college student she intended to sing opera, a period of soul-searching (which included following the Grateful Dead around) led her to investigate traditional Mexican music, albeit through a modern, jazz-influenced filter. She toured with bands like los Cadetes de Yodoyuxi and la Trova Serrana, and began to find her signature style when she hooked up with saxophonist Paul Cohen. From 1999's La Sandunga to 2004's Una Sangre: One Blood, Downs has carved a unique niche for herself: an innovator working off of native traditions, she's both a champion of native cultures and a darling of the world music scene.

He's norteno's first official singer-songwriter, a talent who has absorbed the music of his native Sinaloa while putting his own stamp on everything he does. Paz reportedly penned his first song at age 11 to impress a crush. (Even then he must have known talent gets a girl's attention.) His father sent money from the States for a guitar, and Paz went on to teach himself to play. As a young adult he began writing songs as Isidro Chavez Espinoza, but his creative trajectory was interrupted when he immigrated to California in 1996 to work in the fields. After his mother died, Paz returned to Sinaloa and continued writing songs. Following one more agricultural stint in Oregon, Paz finally devoted himself to songwriting in Mexico, and his songs eventually ended up in the hands of major stars such as El Coyote, Sergio Vega, Banda el Limon, Banda Cuisillos (he penned their hit "Mil Heridas"), Duelo, Autentica de Jerez, Jenni Rivera and others. He won Composer of the Year at the 2009 Billboard Awards and brought home his second ASCAP-BMI award for Latin Songwriter of the Year, while also beginning to see success for his own singing.

The soulful alto of Argentinean singer Mercedes Sosa is internationally recognized and has been immensely influential in Latin America. Since the 1960s, she has interpreted songs with poignant lyrics that condemn war, contemplate love, and describe poverty. Her songs generally employ sparse instrumentation and focus on guitar with drums, bass and piano accompaniment. She was exiled from Argentina in 1978 when she and numerous concert-goers were arrested following a performance of hers; she returned five years later to a heroine's welcome. Most of her recordings stand the test of time, but she has ventured into rock and religious musical arenas to mixed reviews. Sosa's dedication to the disenfranchised and the poor underscores all her creative efforts and makes her an icon of the international Left. Her version of Violeta Parra's emotional "Gracias a la Vida" is perhaps the defining performance of her career.

Even if you don't understand Spanish, Silvio Rodriguez's songs are starkly beautiful and quietly intense. This Cuban singer's lyrics concentrate on radical politics and matters of the heart in a truly unique fashion. Rather than the Buena Vista Social Club, think of Crosby, Stills & Nash rolled up and stuffed into a Latin Billy Bragg. Like Bragg, Rodriguez personalizes socialist philosophy by whispering about love, and his work can also be enjoyed by the apolitical and the capitalist.

Pablo Milanes is one of Cuba's most important singer-songwriters -- an iconic figure whose songs defined the 1960s and beyond. Born in Bayamo, Cuba in 1943, Milanes started out singing gospel and soul (with Cuarteto del Rey) before he went solo and joined a movement known as "feeling." He later sang with Los Bucaneros, before his biggest achievement: creating the "nueva trova" movement in Cuba with fellow singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez. Modeled on Argentina's "nuevo cancion" movement, Milanes and Rodriguez mixed romantic and political lyricism which was sometimes in service of the Cuban revolution -- rather than in protest of fascism, like their Argentinean cousins. Milanes is still active; in 2002 he release an album of duets with everyone from Mana to Gal Costa, introduced by author Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

This Mexico City-based singer-songwriter has the business in her genes. Her dad is director Fernando Sarinana (Todo el Poder, among others) and her mother is the screenwriter Carolina Rivera. Sarinana herself started out in show business at the tender age of eight, when she sang the theme song for the telenovela Luz Clarita. She's acted steadily since, gaining some fame for her roles in films like Amarte Duele -- and for singing "Las Huellas" on that film's soundtrack. In 2008 her deceptively named debut album Mediocre generated buzz among Latin alternative fans looking for a new heroine. With solid songwriting skills and an impeccably cool delivery, Sarinana just might be it.

Uruguayan singer-songwriter Jorge Drexler was better known for his songwriting than singing for years: his songs have been performed by Ana Belen, Pablo Milanes, Ketama, Jaime Roos and Adriana Varela, among many others. But Drexler is a singer of uncommon subtlety, as the world discovered when his "Al Otro Lado Del Rio" (from the film Motorcycle Diaries) won an Oscar in 2005. Drexler's 2005 release Eco promised to garner the singer even more fame, thanks to his delicate, unusual songwriting style and wonderful voice.

She was born Ileana Padron in Havana, Cuba, but it wasn't until she'd moved to New York City that CuCu Diamantes -- the singer, the socialite, the underground Latina icon -- emerged. There, Diamantes first joined up with fellow Cuban Juan Carlos Formell (son of Los Van Van's Juan Formell) to sing backup in his band Cuba Libre. Not long after, Diamantes was hired by Blue Note's A&R division. While there, she met producer/musician Andres Levin, and the two clicked immediately. They began writing songs together, and it was just a matter of time before Diamantes was pulling in acquaintances to form Yerba Buena, the Grammy-nominated group that folded funk, cumbia, Latin soul and hip-hop into an enticing stew. After two albums, the group's momentum slowed, and Diamantes struck out on her own in 2009 with the appropriately titled CuCuLand. It picked up where Yerba Buena left off, mingling that band's salsa/soul with personal, torchy songs and even more eclectic musical influences.

Her mother is American and her Spanish father is a literature professor, and she grew up fluent in English, Spanish and Swedish. But if Ana Laan's heritage is hard to classify, her music isn't: it's some of the most cosmopolitan pop out there, code-switching effortlessly and underscoring her cool, almost bossa nova-style voice with the subtlest electronic beats. Her 2004 release, Oregano, was a delicate but bewitching salvo into the global singer-songwriter fray; 2008's Chocolate and Roses was a randier but no less enjoyable follow-up.

Susana Baca is a supremely sensuous singer who has elevated Afro-Peruvian music to the world stage. Her music's rhythms come via the African diaspora, as played on the cajon (wooden box), and Spanish influences are felt through the guitar. Sad traces of Moorish melodies seep out while donkey jaw, electric guitar, and keyboards add moody textures. Her voice envelops the listener with a warmth that conveys the sincerity of her poetic lyrics. Ideal for late night candle-burning with headphones, or for sharing with friends at a dinner party.

Violeta Parra epitomized the hopefulness of the 1950s and '60s in Latin America. A folklorist who was also a talented singer and songwriter, Parra's love of music started with her family: Her father was a professor of music, while her seamstress mother also played and sang. Parra's family overflowed with talent; thanks to encouragement from her brother, noted poet Nicanor Parra, Violeta went on a song-finding expedition in the '50s that kick-started her love for folkloric music. As she began recording, she helped bring Chilean folkloric music to the public forum. She also wrote and sang songs that helped a nation in transition find itself, and later in her life she also discovered talents for painting and weaving. Tragically, she killed herself in 1967.

Legendary Argentinean artist Atahualpa Yupanqui sings with an aged voice that radiates the rough charm of a cabaret veteran. Performing song styles that are hybrids of South American and Spanish elements such as joropo and milonga, Yupanqui arranges brooding melodies with simplistic charm. Known as a guitar virtuoso, he employs classical and Spanish guitar techniques in his interpretations of South American folkloric songs. But it is his own compositions that make him one of South America's most renowned songsmiths. Firmly ensconced in the nueva trova hall of fame, he sings and recites lyrics that are sublimely poetic and fervently political. Intellectually and aesthetically sophisticated, his music still retains the humble roots of the outcast and downtrodden.

But Russian Red (real name: Lourdes Hernandez) has a melodic sense that rivals any indie popster, as well as a girlish voice that routinely falls just this side of precious. After Hernandez hooked up with English musician Brian Hunt, the duo met producer Fernando Vacas, who convinced them to record their debut album, I Love Your Glasses. It was released in 2008 to universal acclaim -- including awards for Best Debut Album (Premios Pop-Eye) and Best New Artist and Best Alternative Pop Album (Premios de la Musica).
She was one-half of the platinum-selling Spanish duo Alex & Christina in the 1980s, but fame had become something of an albatross around Christina Rosenvinge's neck by the early 1990s. So she did what too few pop stars do: she threw off the fame, moved to New York City, and dove into writing and performing songs in line with her taste, which ran more to Leonard Cohen than Spanish pop. Her sophisticated, '60s-influenced music has gained a quiet but steady following, earning her spots supporting acts like Stereolab and Elliott Smith over the years.

Marta Topferova may have been born in the Czech Republic, but she must have spent a past life in South America. How else to explain a girlish fascination with the continent that first appeared when she heard the Andean group Inti-Illimani and blossomed over the years as she immersed herself in music by Mercedes Sosa and Atahualpa Yupanqui. After moving to Seattle with her parents as a teenager, Topferova taught herself Spanish, graduated from high school and spent the next decade learning everything she could about folkloric music from locales as disparate as Venezuela and Argentina. She also moved to New York City, where she was able to collaborate with groups and further her education. Though she mainly records in Spanish, Topferova has recorded and released a self-produced album, Homage To Homeland, which pays tribute to Czech and Slovakian folk songs. Topferova accompanies herself on the cuatro, and writes all her own lyrics, drawing inspiration from Spanish-language poets including Garcia Lorca.

This Cuban singer has enraptured audiences since she started interpreting the nueva trova repertoire back in Cuba at the beginning of her career. But Laugart didn't gain international recognition until she moved to the United States and joined up with the Grammy-nominated group Yerba Buena, whose 2003 release made them minor celebrities. With her spectacular pipes and that group's hipster-friendly vibe, the combination seemed a winning one, but 2005's Island Life failed to perform as well as its predecessor. Laugart's talents wouldn't languish long, however: she was asked to star in the stage musical Celia, based on the life and music of Celia Cruz, which she has helmed since it opened in 2007 to great critical acclaim.

Musicians who think they have it hard should listen to Juan Carlos Formell's story. Born into an old Cuban family whose musical prowess extends back at least four generations, Formell taught himself to play guitar when he was only seven years old against his family's wishes. By age 12 he was writing songs, and not long after he became a bass player of some renown. However the Castro government took exception to some of his habits -- namely, practicing yoga (dangerous!) and writing songs which didn't fit into any government approved category. They blocked his development as an artist and refused to let him tour outside the country, but he got a break when Cachaito Lopez needed him to fill in on a tour. Formell left the band in Mexico, swam across the Rio Grande to the U.S. and made his way to New York City and ultimately New Orleans. The gamble and the hardships paid off. In 2000 Songs From A Little Blue House was nominated for a Grammy and Formell's delicate songwriting and intelligent updating of Cuban traditions has gained him lots of fans.

Victor Jara's story is intimately bound up with the U.S. government's nefarious influence in Latin America. A folksinger who played a large role in the development of both Chile's Nueva Cancion and Chilean theater in the 1960s, Jara had been inspired by musicians like Violeta Parra and Argentina's Atahualpa Yupanqui. He supported leftist presidential candidate Salvador Allende in Chile's 1970 election, playing concerts and campaigning for Allende. Though Allende won, Jara paid for his activism: When the U.S.-backed Chilean military organized a junta against Allende in 1973, Jara was dragged -- with thousands of others -- to the infamous Chile Stadium, where he was tortured, maimed and ultimately machine-gunned to death. (The military also reportedly managed to destroy most of his master recordings.) These atrocities ushered in decades of dictatorship. In 2003, as the political landscape changed, the stadium where Jara died was renamed Stadium Victor Jara.
