Legendary Brazilian guitarist Luiz Bonfa is a key progenitor to the Bossa Nova movement. After a stint playing clubs in Rio de Janeiro, he migrated to New York in the late 1950s, where he worked as a guitarist and composer with Stan Getz (among others). Having worked as a composer for Brazilian films, he was asked to contribute to the 1959 soundtrack for Black Orpheus, for which he wrote the immortal theme song "Manha de Carnaval." In great demand as both a composer and guitarist due to his exceptionally precise playing, he even wrote a song for Elvis Presley. Over the years, he has recorded more than thirty records -- most of which by 1973. Although obscured by the likes of fellow countrymen and colleagues Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto, his contribution to Brazilian jazz -- and Bossa Nova is particular -- is paramount.

Gilberto Gil is one of the pioneers of Brazil's late '60s Tropicalia movement, a cosmopolitan mix of Latin, World, pop and rock styles. Gil, who spearheaded the movement with Caetano Veloso, usually takes a more grounded, less artsy approach than his old friend. He also has mastered every style he has utilized in his music. A brilliant songwriter with an amazing voice, he can do justice to his homeland's Samba and Bossa Nova styles, then change pace with a high-octane Funk workout before digging into reggae. His skill and obvious love for different music never makes him seem like a performer who wears too many hats. Gil has been a part of the Brazilian music scene since the late 1950s and has become a star throughout the globe.

These veteran musicians are the Brazilian equivalent of the Funk Brothers -- they backed all kinds of popular artists in Brazil in the late 1960s and early '70s and put out a few well-received solo albums of their own. Their most notable work was with Jorge Ben, with whom they developed their signature samba-rock (or samba-soul) sound. The band dissolved in the late '70s, and would have gone the way of the passenger pigeon had not interest surged in their music in the '90s DJ culture. The band reunited in 2000, playing together for the first time in 24 years; they released an album in 2002. The result is as raucous and dance-worthy as you'd hope, inspiring a whole new generation of mocotos, the mini-skirted female dancers the band is named for.

Clara Nunes' first album came out in 1966. It was a placid pop affair that rustled no feathers with its dated boleros and studied avoidance of the craze in Brazil at the time, bossa nova. There was absolutely no hint of the samba diva she was to become. Two years later she released Voce Passa E Eu Acho Graca and the samba-heavy title track pointed the way to her seminal 1970s work, in which she embraced samba totally and enraptured the country with her silken voice and commanding style. Nunes actually started singing in 1959, after winning a music contest that she entered while working in a factory. She quickly got a job at a radio station and began singing in nightclubs. Her growing fame -- and huge record sales in the 1970s -- helped pave the way for subsequent female singers; her life was tragically cut short when a routine varicose veins operation went awry.

One of the central figures that's drawn the world's attention to music from the city of Salvador -- and Brazil in general -- Carlinhos Brown took his name from the godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. He became known as a diverse percussionist while performing on tour with Caetano Veloso, and he later founded a "bloco-afro" (drumming group) called Timbalada. After a watershed performance on Bill Laswell's Bahia Black, Sergio Mendes brought him in to compose for and play on his blockbuster Brasilero record. Brown's own records mix diverse Brazilian rhythms, hard Funk and sweet ballads with styles from all over the African diaspora; thumping bass is surrounded by percussion, while cello, violin, and brass phrases pop in amidst chaotic group vocals. Brown's lengthy, influential shadow on Latin music is evidenced by the fact that Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Marisa Monte, and Milton Nascimento have recorded his songs.

A gentle, jazzy version of Samba from this suave tenor with the able accompaniment of guitars, viola, percussion, clarinet and flute. Santos' "pagode," the backyard version of Samba, is known for clever commentary and allows his musicians more space solos and improvisation. Great guitar playing and excellent arrangements.

Ile Aiye, which means "house of life" in Yoruba, is a traditional Afro-Brazilian performance troupe based in Curuzu, the largest black neighborhood in Salvador, Bahia. Every year the group performs with more than 120 drummers, singers, and dancers for the Carnaval celebration in Bahia. In 1975, due to intense community support, Ile Aiye became the first troupe of African descent to be permitted to perform at the event. Their music finds its roots in the candomble, or traditional Afro-Brazilian religion, for which music forms an important part of ritual. The songs consist of male and female vocalists leading call-and-response chants with a chorus over thundering polyrhythms of African origin. The rhythms form the backbone for the samba, Brazil's foremost national dance style. The lyrics, sung in both Yoruba and Portuguese, deal with themes of unity against racism, cultural preservation, and spirituality. This group's contribution to Afro-Brazilian culture and the decline of institutional racism cannot be overstated.
