Powell, who had grown up playing violin before transitioning to bass and then guitar, soon dropped out of Concordia's music program. She played in several bands and even released a solo EP, but didn't find what she wanted to hear until she hooked up with Wheaton again and formed Land of Talk. The group went through three bassists before convincing McCarron to come onboard.
